The Black Stump Campdraft was held at the Blackall Showgrounds last weekend with 197 competitors participating in the event.

The campdrafting started on Friday at 1pm and went until Sunday.

There were just over 1000 runs for the weekend with 800 first round runs and 201 second round and final runs.

Robert Politch was named Highest Scoring Local Rider in the first round of the maiden draft with an 89, and also took out the honours for the Highest Aggregate Scoring Local rider for the weekend.

In the Landmark Juvenile Draft, Jessiah Arnold triumphed on Silhouette, while Jaye Hall took out first placing in the Grant Daniel and Long Ladies’ Draft on Reliable and Jacky O’Dell won the Gillespie Santas Maiden Draft on Dusty Mist.

Ben Hall took out the Elders Restricted Open Draft on Lex and also triumphed in the Strathmore Santa

Gertrudis Open Draft on Foot Acre. In the Spinks Concrete Junior Draft

Jontti Arnold took out first place on Stetson.

Lenore and Mick Cole from Nebo and John Salmond from Colinsville were the judges for the various events.

Russell Pastoral Company of ‘Champion’ Blackall were the sole cattle donors for the event, with cattle walked to and from town for the event by the Blackall Campdraft Association.

Tom Gleeson from Barcaldine said that the Black Stump Campdraft was a great event for competitors and a fun weekend.

“I wouldn’t miss it for quids,” Mr Gleeson said.

There was plenty of entertainment to fill the evening with local DJ Dave Goodman providing music on the Friday night, and Tambo band Court in Session getting the crowds dancing on Saturday evening until late.

From the Editor

I write this letter to you from Winton where I am attending a Western Queensland Local Government Association Conference.

A submission by the Tambo Business and Tourism Group in partnership with the Blackall Tambo Regional Council for funding from the Blue Print for the Bush round to assist regional areas has been successful. $5,000 will be used to create signage to identify natural plant species found growing along “Coolibah Walk” in Tambo. The opening of the new signage will be held on June 5 with a community walk and brunch.

The Blackall Tambo Regional Council Meeting held in Tambo on April 6 was the first of our video link meetings with David Alexander of the Longreach Leader and President of the Blackall Livestock Agents Association Paton Fitzsimmons able to make use of the facility.

From the meeting, I am pleased to announce a

curbside bulk item rubbish pick up for both Blackall and Tambo for the week commencing May 16, 2011. There will be more details available in the next few weeks.

The Blackall Tambo Regional Council was unable to accede to a request by Barron Agencies to conduct sales at the Blackall Sale Yards on Thursdays after the Sale conducted by the Blackall Livestock Agents Association each week.Council has suggested a commission selling

arrangement with another agent who does already belong to the Blackall Livestock Agents Association.

The Historic Wool Scour Association will receive 1000 litres of diesel as a donation from the Blackall Tambo Regional Council to assist them to begin the 2011 tourist season. This year we are looking for an increase in visitor numbers to our region and I have been delighted to have received positive feedback from visitors who have recently stayed in Blackall.

FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

Things are truly starting to kick into action for the year, with the Blackall races planned for this weekend if the weather holds off and the Blackall Show fast approaching.

Unfortunately I keep on hearing about the difficulties organisations are having in receiving support for events. Blackall has such a good range of events organised at the moment that it truly is

a shame not to take advantage of the opportunities. Frankly, many other towns don’t have a social calendar as extensive as we do, but events cannot continue without community support. With many interesting events planned in coming months, it’s the perfect time to think about buying tickets and getting involved.

Next week’s paper will be a colour edition so if you’re interested in

colour advertising, please get in touch with me.

The week after Easter there will be no paper, due to the number of public holidays that week. The Barcoo Independent will then print another colour edition on May 6.

Advertisers during these weeks should be aware of a $65 colour surcharge to cover the cost of colour printing.

The impact of the many natural disasters last summer through lives lost and community historical records and buildings destroyed or damaged was acknowledged at the annual general meeting of the Blackall Historical Society (BHS) recently.

A major project at the Blackall cemetery started in partnership with the Blackall-Tambo Regional Council (BTRC) has been delayed by the very wet spring and summer experienced by the region.

Following the entry of all cemetery register and map records onto a computer by BTRC project officer Alison Shaw and her team, BHS members were trained by consultant Melissa Driscoll to check each record at the cemetery.

They are also replacing pegs where pegs exist, photographing headstones, taking GPS points for each plot and creating new maps.

According to president Christine Campbell, all the graves in the denominational sections on the right hand side of the entrance

gate have been checked and mapped to date.

The work has been made possible by a grant from the Community Memorials Restoration Fund.

The excellent work of co-team leader Wendy Quilty and the assistance of Simon Campbell were acknowledged.

Another highlight of the year outlined by Christine in her president’s report included a visit by the Chiles family last August.

The family was researching its ancestors, the Blanning family who owned the Prince of Wales Hotel (an earlier building on the site of the current hotel) and the property Mineeda in the years 1906-1912.

George Blanning was mayor of Blackall in 1911 and 1912.

Louise Bailie, Neville Dolinski and Father Matthew were thanked for their help in providing information and site visits.

Researcher Dale Lane, who has relocated from Blackall, was thanked for her efforts in answering the many family history enquiries

that come to the society.Other members who have

relocated include Jenny Donaldson and Janet Behan.

Christine said they, along with Grace and Dave Pocknee from Hoffman Surveyors had been very helpful with expertise in regards to the cemetery mapping and early survey maps.

Christine and Wendy Quilty were re-elected as president and secretary respectively.

Jill Taylor has taken on the position of vice president and Daphne Rich brings her enormous expertise to the position of treasurer.

“The BHS is a very small band of people willing to tackle very big projects,” Christine said. Any interested members of the community are invited to join the society which usually meets on the first Friday of the month.

Blackall residents had the opportunity to gain some business knowledge with their morning coffee at the business breakfast and business expo held last Thursday morning.

Around 15 Blackall residents enjoyed a cooked breakfast at the Acacia Motor Inn while listening to talks from a range of organisations.

AusIndustry was the main organiser behind the event, with presentations by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, the Australian Taxation Office, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship,

the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation, Small Business Solutions, RAPAD, IP Australia, YouthInvest and QLD Outreach.

The breakfast was followed by a business expo with people able to attend throughout the morning to ask questions and find out information from any of the organisations.

Deborah Mead from AusIndustry said they were all pleased with the turnout and felt that the participants got a lot out of the breakfast and expo.

“It’s been really good and there are always a lot of good quality

questions at these events,” Ms Mead said.

Scott Walker from Design Hub said he found the information at the breakfast very useful and a great way to find out about opportunities for businesses.

“There’s lots of support out there that doesn’t cost anything that you don’t necessarily know about,” Scott said.

Business Expos were also held in Longreach and Barcaldine with more to be held in Bedourie, Birdsville and Jundah later in the year.

Over 1000 widows and 14 school-age children in the Central West benefit from the funds raised by the annual Legacy Good Friday appeal, held in conjunction with Outback Radio 4LG.

Blackall representative Peter Evans said the April 22 appeal was the main way local people could assist to provide services to those who are suffering economically and socially after the death of a spouse or parent due to defence force service, or subsequently.

The appeal aims to raise over $30 000 each year, from people phoning in and pledging donations

“The central west programs are coordinated by volunteers, and cover support to both young families and to older widows,” Peter said.

“One such young family in western Queensland consists of a widow and her four children aged between nine and 18.

“This family is in difficult financial circumstances, and the education and personal development of the children is typical of the work Legacy does in country Queensland.”

Peter added that remoteness brought about special difficulties for older clients.

“For them, Legacy’s support includes the provision of medical alert monitoring systems for those that live alone, mobility aids for the frail and aged, and accommodation assistance in accessing special medical treatment over long distances.”

As well as on-air donations being

made throughout the day, Outback Radio 4LG and Legacy conduct an on-air charity auction.

Among the items donated by local, regional or state businesses this year are Qantas flights and Brisbane accommodation to a Bledisloe Cup rugby match, Qantas flights and accommodation for the third State of Origin game, in Brisbane, Qantas flights, accommodation and tickets to the ‘Cirque De Soleil’ performance at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in July, and Rex Airlines flights plus Magnetic Island accommodation for the Ultimate V8 experience in Townsville.

“As the slogan says, we urge Blackall people to give like the Diggers gave,” said Peter.

Linda Carter was the winner of the Dance Blackall Easter raffle drawn at the group’s meeting on Monday afternoon.

Dance Blackall chairperson, Lavina Anderson was very pleased with the raffle fundraiser saying, “A big thank you for supporting this raffle must go to Schluter’s Bakery, 5 Star, Ian Kinsey Outback Chemist, Landmark, dance group families and all ticket buyers.”

The dance group meeting saw strong support for dancing with a dozen parents attending to discuss dancing for Term 2 and the fundraising plan for the next few months.

The Show Ball babysitting is one fundraiser of which the committee hopes people will take advantage.

On request by the show society, the group will offer babysitting in the school library to parents attending the ball with bookings essential.

The next community event held by Dance Blackall will be the Mother’s Day morning tea being held from 9:30am to 12pm on Sunday May 8 in the Ward family’s garden at 5 Gidyea Street.

For $10 adults/$5 children/$20 family morning tea will be served by dance students at decorated tables in the garden.

Lessons in ballet, jazz and tap dancing are available weekly during school terms for ages from pre-primary to adult at the Showgrounds each Monday and Tuesday with Term 2 lessons starting on Monday May 2 from 3:30pm.

The possibility of graziers getting together to do more locally relevant research and development was raised in the last Business News. What about a project to document the benefits from cattle transport on sealed roads as distinct to dirt roads? It will be hard to get funding for sealing roads unless the economic benefits can be proven. Don’t forget, there is help to define the project, find people to do it for you and then apply for funds. Contact the Council EDO on [email protected].

Workshops are coming thick and fast for graziers this year. RCS are having an Applied Grazing workshop in Emerald from 9-12 May and a Ruminant Nutrition workshop on 13 May, also at Emerald. MLA and RCS will also hold workshops in mid April.

MLA have offered to run local workshops if they have the numbers. Other presenters such as RCS may well do so as well. Contact the Council EDO on [email protected].

Mayor Jan Ross has written to Senator Conroy, Commonwealth Minister, on plans to stop broadcasting TV services in small towns such as Tambo from late 2013. Facilities to re-broadcast digital TV for Blackall are being built now. The Commonwealth has offered a subsidy to residents of affected small towns (eg Tambo) to put in a satellite dish. A key issue is how this will affect drive tourists. If they don’t have an expensive satellite dish on their vehicle, they will not have access to TV of any sort in Tambo after late 2013. They therefore may not

stay overnight, causing a serious problem for local tourism.

There is a lot of talk, and concern, over climate change and a carbon tax. However, putting climate change aside for a moment, there is a growing general concern by many people in Australia, Europe and the USA about the environment and a growing problem with waste disposal in Australia, Europe and the USA. There are also rising costs of raw materials as India and China grow, with the potential for shortages.

There are an increasing number of corporate solutions to these environmental issues. News Corporation can now claim they are carbon neutral as of December 2010. They have purchased carbon offsets via buying electricity from a wind farm in India, and are reducing business travel by using videoconferencing. They are also reducing water and electricity uses by the range of buildings they use. They will therefore pay no carbon tax and will have saved a lot of money in the process.

One challenge for businesses in Blackall and Tambo is how they can save money by reducing power use. Another is how graziers can tap into carbon offsets by getting big companies to pay them for improving the carbon levels in their soil. A recent conference in Melbourne on climate change and primary industries has copies of the papers presented online at http://www.theccrspiconference.com.au/). Consumer concerns on the environment are not going to go away.

Morning of fun at St Joseph’sSt Joseph’s Primary School students got a

chance to have a morning of fun for a good cause with a mini-fair held at the school last Thursday.

The fair raised $300 for Project Compassion, a community engagement project by Caritas Australia, the charity that St Joseph’s is supporting as their Lenten project.

The students played skittles and putting golf, tried their hand at the chocolate toss and fishing game, and even got the chance to dunk their teachers in a dunking tank.

The Year Six and Seven students ran a canteen on the day with visiting parents able to buy coffee, cake and biscuits.

The event rounded out with a helper auction with Rowan Davison, Rudd Choyce, Sam Fletcher and Sammi Donnelly all sold for half an hour of work and teacher Tom Reddy and principal Tim Franzmann sold for three hours of work.

Jeremy Barron from Barron Agencies was auctioneer for the sale, which raised a total of $100.

Sammi Donnelly, Rudd Choyce, Rowan Davison and Sam Fletcher were auctioned off as helpers by Jeremy Barron.

The students enjoyed the chance to give principal Tim Franzmann a good dunking.

The chocolate toss was a popular activity at the mini-fair.

Avonleigh cleans up in Blackall wether trialA 2007 team of wethers has won

Avonleigh station accolades and a holiday at Mooloolaba following the Barcoo Pastoral Society’s annual wether trial shearing last week.

The sheep owned by Graeme and Sue McDonald and managed by Rod Allpass had both the best wool and carcase results for their age group, $74.42 for wool and $123.90 for meat value.

The combination also meant the team won the Newport Apartments supreme pen award, with a value of $184.60 per sheep.

The other winner on the day was the Blackall State School, which had the highest valued fleece in the trial, $104.20 for their 5.7 kilogram 17 micron fleece.

It was the first time the school had been represented, thanks to the donation of a team by Ian and Deb Macdonald, Bloomfield.

Five students from the school

were present on the day, taking turns to throw and skirt fleeces, to operate the press, and to value fleeces.

“It was a ripper of a day,” said wether trial steward Rod Allpass. “It was so good to have young people taking an interest in what we’re doing.”

Around 100 sheep were shorn on the day, with four age groups making up the trial.

The Lloyd family at Lorne took out the 2006 age group with wool valued at $71.35, from the Chandlers at Home Creek ($67.40) and the Taylor family at Coolagh.

In the 2007 age group, Avonleigh was in first place, with Warringah second and Coolagh third.

The Wood family at Koondoo won the 2008 age group with a team wool value of $80.69, from Patricia Downs and Colart.

The youngest age group was won by the Macdonalds at Lilyveil.

The Cripps family at Melrose were second and Koondoo was third.

Koondoo received the Thornleigh trophy for the wool aggregate for the best results over all age groups.

Their overall wool value was $74.85.

Behind them was Avonleigh ($69.48) and Lorne ($65.07).

On the meat side, Avonleigh had the best pen of mutton sheep (average price $123.90), from Melrose and Coolagh.

Wool judge Greg Hunt from the Australian Wool Network said the entries had come through the rain fairly well.

“The huge amount of rain cotted fleeces, especially in the younger sheep,” he said.

“It was also great to see young people interested in wool production on the day.”

--Sally Cripps

Blackall State School students Lachlan Ashworth, Sean McCoy, Nathan Whysall, Aaron Williams and Geordy Heard inspect their prize winning fleece at the Blackall show wether trial.

Western residents were able to brush up their artistic skills last weekend with a glass workshop for beginners held in Tambo.

Four Tambo residents, one Longreach resident and two Barcaldine residents attended the workshop run by Alison Shaw.

The workshop covered basic glass art techniques, cutting, and fusing with students creating a variety of works such as bowls, coasters and jewellery pieces.

Alison will run another glass workshop in May for a maximum of eight participants.

Blackall truck in Winton museum

Owen Stockwell with his vintage Commer truck at the Winton Heritage Truck and Machinery Museum.

Blackall resident Owen Stockwell recently visited Winton’s Diamantina Heritage Truck & Machinery Museum where his vintage Commer truck is one of the prime exhibits.

The Commer truck has been on display at the museum since mid 2010, but Owen’s March visit was the first time that he had seen it on exhibit.

Owen began his transport company Blackall Freighters in the early 1960s with the Commer

the first truck purchased. In 1989 Owen conducted

a dispersal sale of the company, but the Commer which had been restored for the sale did not sell.

Kevin Harlow of Blackall took care of the truck for over 20 years until it was fully restored by Bill Baskett of Toowoomba.

Following restoration, the Commer became an exhibit at the Diamantina Heritage Truck and Machinery Museum in Winton.
