SPORT ON THE BARCOOSara sets future benchmark
Riders Naomi Bichsel, Corrine Anderson, Sara Aspinall and Rachelle Bichsel with coach Helen Aspinall.
BLACKALL Pony Club competitor Sara Aspinall and Longreach riders Corrine Anderson, Rachelle Bichsel and Naomi Bichsel braved flooded rivers, creeks, black mud and sandflies to compete in Theodore over four days recently.
The competition comprised of a formal Gymkhana, sporting days, mounted games and Campdraft. On the first day the versatility of our
riders showed with Corrine winning her age group and Sara coming fourth overall out of 55 competitors in her age group.Sara had set the benchmark in two
events for next year’s competitors to aspire to.
Our competitors were in the top 10 all day in the sporting events. The mounted games had 32 teams with zone 14 coming sixth, seventh, 10th, 11th, 22nd and 27th overall. All girls showed good sportsmanship in the Campdraft with Naomi and Sara getting half way around the very slippery course.

DESPITE most delegates expressing a lack of support for the government’s proposed Year 7 move to secondary school at the Isolated Children’s Parents’ Association state conference in Charters Towers recently, Blackall delegates did not support the motion asking for the year level to be maintained at primary school.
The Year 7 move was a big topic of discussion for around 180 delegates and guests from throughout the state, representing some 1200 families.

ONE of Blackall’s main attractions, the Blackall Aquatic Centre, is losing a considerable amount of water each day due to cracks in the pool.According to the Blackall-Tambo
Regional Council’s website, the aquatic centre is great for relaxing in warm, soothing, pure artesian water in quiet outdoor surroundings, but the council’s chief executive officer Ken Timms said he was unsure exactly how much of this water was leaking out of the pool.
A large number of tourists travel long distances to take advantage of this artesian water yet this water has been leaking out of the pool for years.
Mr Timms said the council was investigating its options with a company from Western Australia that had technology that could realign the pool and fix the leakage problem.“That’s probably a quarter of the price
of replacing the pool,” he said.To give an indication of costs, Mr Timms
said, it would cost about $4 million to replace a 25-metre pool.Yet, Blackall has and still wants the 50-
metre Olympic-sized pool.He hoped the council was looking at
$500,000 to a million dollars to realign the whole pool, which could be in the 2011/2012 budget.
Mr Timms said the movement in the ground and fractured pipes underneath had caused the leakage, which puts a lot of pressure on lessees Debbra and Brian O’Rourke. The pool needs to be regularly topped up with bore water and the right amount of chemicals and the leakage also results in more cleaning for the lessees.Debbra wants the pool fixed as soon
as possible. “The cracks are going to make it very hard to keep it clean and maintained,” she said.
“Everyone that comes from down south say how much of a wonderful facility it is,” Debbra said.
She believed local residents needed to use the pool more to show the council it is viable to fix the problem soon.
Blackall Aquatic Centre lessee Debbra O’Rourke is concerned about the cracks in the pool.

The Barcoo Independent, Friday, October 8, 2010 - TV GUIDE
WORK is underway once more on the Blackall Industrial Estate Drainage System and of course much needed repairs to all our weather worn and torn roads will happen as the road network dries out. It is a waste of money, time and effort to attempt this work before the conditions are ideal to obtain the best outcome. The Blackall-Tambo Regional
Council urges residents to report any road hazards to the Tambo or Blackall branch offices as soon as they possibly can so that attention may be given to urgent problems sooner rather than later!
An ongoing struggle by affected local governments to have the report, developed by the State Government’s Department of Environment and Resource
Management on the sustainability of the Cypress Forests of Queensland, released before there is legislation voted on by Cabinet at the Parliamentary Sitting on the October 18, is another very important issue for our region. We have a Cypress Mill operating at Tambo, which has, since its commencement lifted the population numbers in Tambo, created jobs and added a substantial contribution to the economic well-being of Tambo. I have been making representation to Ministers Mulherin, Robertson and Jones on this important matter for some months now together with Member for Gregory Vaughan Johnson.
Economic development officer Louise Campbell has 40
participants ready to connect solar power to their homes and businesses. The Blackall-Tambo Regional Council is also participating in this unique venture.

belt. Lindsay first picked up a guitar
in high school after the death of his grandfather.
“All the family came home for the funeral and my uncles/cousins were in bands down south so one thing lead to another. Listening to them play and sing - It was a lightning bolt moment and it hit me hard. I still remember how powerful it was. They showed me a couple of chords and for the next year I was on a mission. I spent countless hours daily glued to the strings,” he said.
Lindsay will perform at the Springtime Festival, a fundraiser for the Blackall Hospital, from 6pm to midnight at Banks Park.

DESPITE most delegates expressing a lack of support for the government’s proposed Year 7 move to secondary school at the Isolated Children’s Parents’ Association state conference in Charters Towers recently, Blackall delegates did not support the motion asking for the year level to be maintained at primary school.
The Year 7 move was a big topic of discussion for around 180 delegates and guests from throughout the state, representing some 1200 families.ICPA president Lorraine
McGinnis said the change would impact greatly on rural families who don’t have access to a nearby secondary school, citing issues with extra costs and the age of children going away to school.
She said the move would also impact on small schools disproportionately.
“Losing a whole year level could adversely affect the school’s staffing allocation, the bus run and, with uncertainty about its resourcing or viability, some families may have to relocate, taking even more children from the community.”However, Blackall branch
president Fiona Russell told the conference that well over 80 percent of people surveyed by the education department earlier in

the year had supported the move. She said it was not realistic to
expect to stop it from happening, adding that schools were well equipped to cope with the needs of children of all ages.
“This is a logical extension of bringing in the Prep year,” Fiona concluded.
Mrs McGinnis said if the move was to go ahead, ICPA would push for several provisos from the education department.“We would ask that the move
doesn’t go ahead until there was a national alignment of the school starting age and we would work with the department for an increase in financial assistance.”With Blackall having recently
lost its last school bus run, this was a topical issue for Fiona and fellow delegate Sally Cripps but they were unable to support the
motion from Aramac/Muttaburra asking for ICPA to lobby for a firm commitment to guarantee the Aramac and Barcaldine school bus run regardless of student numbers on the bus.
Along with other delegates, Fiona and Sally agreed that it was not economically viable to keep it open for one or two children.
The conference also heard that in 2009 there were 13 runs closed and three opened, and so far this year, two runs in the state have closed while 10 have opened.
Other motions put forward causing some intense debate included recognising dyslexia as a specific learning disability, requiring modified teaching and adjusted curriculum; access to internet for all students in rural and remote locations; kindergarten programs; increased internet subsidies; and the continuation of Queensland Arts Council visits to rural and remote schools.
Education department deputy director general, Lyn McKenzie, who opened conference, said ICPA’s strength was that it brought forward positions that were well grounded and thought out.
“You don’t come to us with problems but with ideas for improvement.”
Next year’s state conference, celebrating ICPA’s 40th year, will be in Rockhampton.

CHARLIE Mort operates the Grassdale Feedlot of 33,000 head capacity and turns off about 150,000 head of grain fed cattle per year.
Charlie said the performance of the 250 purebred Strathmore Santa Gertrudis milk tooth steers killed in December 2009 was a “phenomenal result”.The milk tooth steers were fed for
101 days gaining 255kg or 2.52kg per day for a dry feed conversion of 4.4kg per 1kg of gain.In 2006 a line of 209 purebred
Strathmore Santa Gertrudis steers gained 2.56kg/day for 110 days for a dry feed conversion of 4.76kg per 1kg of gain.
This shows the outstanding performance and consistency of the Strathmore Santa Gertrudis herd.“I would be able to retire early if
all the cattle we fed could perform this well,” Charlie said.
Strathmore steers are usually grass fattened on the Walker family properties, “Ravensbourne” at Blackall, “Chatham” and “Westquarter” at Tambo if the season permits. Otherwise

feeder-steers are “fed on” or sold. The Strathmore commercial herd
targets the export market and meets the market specifications very consistently.Ian Walker said, “This focus on
commercial trends helps us breed the type of bulls in the
Strathmore Santa Gertrudis Stud herd for the commercial market.”
At the property of “Ravensbourne” at Blackall on October 19, Strathmore will offer 100 young Santa
Gertrudis bulls averaging 22.5 months of age. Progeny of the noted sires, Waco Stature (P), Strathmore X196 (P), Strathmore Y48, Waco Trendy (P), Wilgaroon Jester (P) and Santa Park Sandman (P) will be included in the draft.

Kid’s Corner with Eddie EmuG’day Kids. Welcome back, I hope you all enjoyed your break – I know I did even the rain, mozzies and sandflies. It was brought to my attention, by a very smart seven-year-old, that even though there is nine weeks left of school until the Christmas holidays – if you break it down into days and then take away public holidays and student free days – there is only 37 days left of school. How cool is that!
