1. Relax! Everything will be “Perfect Enough.” If you’re aperfectionist about the gifts, décor, and food, how can you really enjoythe season? Learn to prioritize and delegate. The Holidays will still bebeautiful and memorable, even if you don't do it all by yourself. 2. Create a budget AND STICK TO IT! Fretting over finances can puta damper on your Holiday cheer. List everything that may cost moneythis holiday season, then do a reality check. If it’s outside your budget, rethink your list. Remember, if you’re putting it on credit, you can’tafford it.3. Holiday gatherings are not the time for family problem solving.Keep Peace on Earth, or at least at your family gathering, by avoidingcontentious discussions. Talk about important issues before yougather, or wait until after the holidays. 4. Avoid Overindulging. That fourth or fifth sugar cookie or extraclass of eggnog won't lift your spirits if you are stressed or depressed. If you catch yourself drinking or eating to relieve anxiety or loneliness, take a step back and think about the source of your feelings. Facingyour emotions in a healthy way can keep you from overeating. 5. Give yourself a break. Pause between the endless tasks andholiday crowds to take a few deep, slow breaths, allowing your bodyto unwind and your mind to clear. Transcend tension while driving bytaking a few deep breaths, making sure to exhale completely.6. Treat yourself! Give yourself something that makes you reallyhappy this holiday season, and give it early! By “filling your tank,” youwill have more of yourself to offer as the holiday season takes over. 7. Just say NO. Keep your commitments manageable. Avoid stressfrom holiday overload by saying “no” or canceling things from yourcalendar. 8. Avoid people who ruin the Holiday. Set some very specific rulesfor habitual party-poopers – no heavy drinking or politics, for starters –and be direct, because rude people don’t pick up on subtle cues. Orsimply uninvite them.9. Exercise the blues away. Exercise and recreation help releaseendorphins, improving your emotions.10. Listen daily to Empower Your Holiday Spirit – My Gift to You.This guided relaxation will help you achieve a state of inner peace andserenity.

t’s November, and that means Halloween is behind us andThanksgiving is just about here. As you begin to think aboutall those delicious foods you will either be preparing orconsuming, I want you to also think about the caloric aspect

of this holiday and how to be better prepared.

After researching on how many calories are in the averageThanksgiving dinner, the answer is anywhere between 3,000 - 4,500calories. If calories aren’t important and your chin didn’t just drop, thenthere is no reason to continue to read on. But, if you are even a littlebit concerned and care about what you are putting into your body andwhat it will take to burn off those calories, then read on.

One pound of body weight is equal to 3,500 calories. That means youcan expect to gain 1-2 lbs. on that day alone. Actually, the scale couldsay more since you will be bloated from all the extra sodium, sugarsand fats that are in dishes and beverages you normally don’t consumeon a daily basis. If you plan on having leftovers, and who doesn’t, thenyou can watch that number go up even more during the days ahead.

What will it take to burn off those calories? My research indicates thatan average 160 lb. person would have to run 4 hrs. at a moderaterate, swim for 5 hrs., or walk for 30 miles just to burn off that ultimatefeast. We all know that most likely wouldn’t happen, so let’s break itdown this way. An average hour of moderate cardio burns 500-650calories. If you can make room in your schedule to workout for oneweek straight for 1 hr. each day, then you can expect to lose about 1lb. So even breaking it down to a workout regimen that is morereasonable, you would still have to keep that exercise schedule goingfor several weeks thereafter. Therefore, the best way to enjoy thisThanksgiving dinner is to plan ahead.

Start increasing your workouts now so even if you do splurge, it won’tmake such a big difference. Another option is to make better choiceswhen filling up your dinner plate. Three ounces of white turkey meat isonly 98 calories. Now start figuring in the rest like mashed potatoes (1cup = 256 calories), cornbread stuffing (1 cup = 358 calories), and themust-have cranberry sauce (1 cup = 418 calories). Don’t forget toinclude the sweet potato pie with marshmallows, green beancasserole, plus wine and dessert. It’s calorie overload no matter howyou look at it. This is why portion control is so important. You can

indulge, but in small amounts and please try to stay away from havingseconds.

I hope some of these numbers and information will help you manageyour weight as this holiday season begins. With just some littlechanges to your holiday menu, you can make hundreds of caloriesdisappear just by not having them aspart of your meal in the first place.

Let me take this opportunity to wisheveryone a Happy and HealthyThanksgiving.

This is why Dr.Jason Gorscak, Florida Eye Microsurgical Institute’s comprehensiveophthalmologic specialist, urges anyone with diabetes to get theireyes examined annually. “Everyday visual changes may not be obvious – you may be driving, reading, working with no notice of any sight impairment,” says Dr.Gorscak, “however, physical changes in the retina and the bloodvessels of the retina could be beginning – changes that would only bedetected during an eye examination.”

A typical exam with Dr. Gorscak includes a visual acuity test, pupildilation, and ophthalmoscopy and tonometry tests. When most people hearthe word “gym”, a certainimage comes to mind: ahuge center filled withvarious cardio equipment, the clanking of weightmachines, high-energymusic blasting throughoutthe room, etc. For some, that is the type ofatmosphere they thrive inphysically. But for manyothers, those gyms don’tget them the physicalresults they need. The keyfactor? It’s simple. Thosegyms are impersonal.

eet Ncognito Fitness. Like abreath of fresh air, this fitnesscenter is more than just a gym.

It’s a place one can go to improve one’sentire lifestyle. With comprehensive planscatered to an individual’s physical goals,Ncognito is a unique business that ispersonal. It is all about you.

The idea for Ncognito was born years agowhen owner Marcus Nisbett lived in NewYork. After a bad car accident in which hesuffered serious multiple injuries, Nisbetthad to undergo rehabilitation. Throughouthis recovery, however, he becameincreasingly fascinated with the process ofrehabilitation and the way the body works. He realized that fitness doesn’t have to beonly cardio and strength training. Heexperienced first-hand how flexibility, stretching, and massage lend a major handin helping the body to recover. He wantedto learn more and decided to go tomassage school. Motivated by all he hadgone through, Nisbett subsequentlycreated a business plan for a new type offitness center, which would have theessential high-quality exercise equipment,

atmosphere here,” he says. In fact, they plan to commemorate thisimportant anniversary with a private event celebrating their clientele.“It’s all about appreciation for our clients.”

Their success can also be attributed to the fact that they have proventhat personalized service makes all the difference when it comes tohealth and fitness. Ncognito has been invaluable to so many because,as Nisbett points out, “We’re not your typical facility. Some people callus a gym, some call us a massage spa. We’re not like anything elsethat’s out there.”

“Everyone’s path to health is a matter of asking the right questions,”Nisbett says. And Ncognito has just the answer.

but would also incorporate massage and nutrition in a minimizedspace. After moving to South Florida to be closer to family, Ncognitowas founded in Wellington in 2007.

Within two years, business was booming and they had to relocate to alarger space in Royal Palm Beach. Clientele was made up of alltypes. Because of early and flexible hours, Nisbett and his team foundthat busy professionals, such as doctors in the area, were able to usethe facility to fit their hectic schedules. Their clients began referringeveryone they knew, from family members to coworkers, and soonNcognito had established a fun, family atmosphere.

So, how does it all work? When a new client signs up at Ncognito, heor she receives a 30-minute fitness evaluation. The evaluation teststhe individual’s muscular strength, cardio endurance, flexibility, andbalance. Fitness goals are discussed and then a plan is designedbased on the profile. They can then work out as many times a weekas the plan suggests with a personal trainer. A typical sessionincludes cardio and flexibility training. Afterwards, each client istreated to a few minutes of stretching in a private room with a licensedmassage therapist. Clients also receive complimentary water, freshfruit, and a towel for their workout session. There is also the option tomeet with a registered dietician and create a nutritional plan, whichranges from a basic weekly meal plan to having meals prepared anddelivered at home.

It’s now been five years since Ncognito has opened and changed theway people meet their fitness needs. Because massage has becomesuch a big part of the business (people can make appointments formassages without having to sign up for personal training – anotherreason why this sets them apart from other fitness centers), the teamat Ncognito has plans to relocate to a larger facility, as well as openother locations in West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, and Palm BeachGardens.

Nisbett says their success is all due to the loyalty of their clients andthe teamwork of everyone involved at Ncognito. “It is such a fun

erbal therapies are gaining more interest as the publicmoves away from the pharmaceuticals’ side effects. Some of the subjects we will touch upon are beyond

the scope of an article, but I hope you will gain some understanding ofthe use and misuse of herbs.

There are generally three types of patients: some that can take a fulldose of anything and have no ill effects; those that are normal andhave mild side effects; and those that can take little to no Westernmedication since they have severe reactions. There are also a rarefew that have opposite reactions to the medications.

Western medicine is both evidence (studies) and experience-based(clinical practice). Most medications are clinically used for somethingother than for which they were studied. Most ‘practice medicine’ islearned in residencies and internships and is centered on thesymptom cessation. Most other traditions center upon treating anunderlying disharmony first (cause), and then the result of thatdisharmony (symptom). To oversimplify: fix the leaky pipe (cause)rather than keep cleaning up the water on the floor (symptom).Western views tend to see the body mechanically using Cartesian andlinear thought. This is excellent for some endeavors, such asemergency medicine and surgery. In the Eastern tradition, the body isseen as a garden or ecosystem. Management of all the componentsleads to maximum productivity and longevity.

There are thousands of years of written and oral history about herbs. Most medications come from herbs. The key component is taken out, concentrated and taken up to a toxic dose, and then reduced todetermine a therapeutic dose. For example: aspirin comes from WhiteWillow, and in toxic doses causes ear ringing. Because herbs have

A person can take several products for all the right reasons but thecombinations unknowingly can cause a problem. One might takevitamin C for the immune system, Gingko for memory, Vitamin E forarthritis, and aspirin from the doctor, but each one of these thin theblood. One unknowingly has created a problem.

One scenario might be to fix one system of the body to heal another. In fertility cases, time is needed to regulate the cycle. Onceregulated, the body is ready to accept fertility herbs andacupuncture. It can take months to rebuild body systems.Impatience and unrealistic expectations have cost lots of peopletime, money and effort.

It is difficult to sum up herbal theory and treatment strategy to apatient. All of this can be overwhelming and leads us to the question:“How do we find good herbal help?” You want someone with goodinstinct, education, experience, solid degrees, and who are openand honest. Making decisions together is better than blindlyfollowing.

Biography:After graduation from University with degrees in Psychology andAnthropology, Cameron Bishop sold his car and bought a one-wayticket to Japan. He lived and worked in Japan for four years andstudied healing and martial arts. Upon his return he attended andgraduated NIAOM with a “Masters in Acupuncture” and ACTCM forhis accredited “Doctorate in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine”specializing in “Women’s Health” and “Pain Management.” HisDoctoral Training included Hospital Internships in US and China.Cameron has been in acupuncture practice for over sixteen years, spending five years working for a Western medical office. He is aboard Certified and State Licensed Acupuncturist (AP 762). His website is www.AskWithin.com which contains his bio, credentials andmany helpful articles.

the original components, the number of side effects is less, butsometimes they have to be taken longer and in bigger doses to havethe same effect. The advantage of herbs is easier dosing, and fewerside effects. Herbal formulas often address two components- thecause and the result. Often in a chronic situation, a cause can takethree months or more to shift in a positive direction before you will beable to ‘see’ a result.

No medicine is one hundred percent effective. If the desired resultsfrom herbal therapies are not happening, it can be from a variety ofreasons: the dosage could be incorrect, the herbs themselves maynot be potent due to age or condition, the frequency not being takenas recommended, not enough time taking them, and/or simply theherb is not getting into the body.

The strongest potency is fresh herbal liquid boiled at home. The badtaste and smell makes compliance low. Next are premade herballiquids, but their shelf life is short. The next level of potency ispowders mixed in water or placed in capsules. The lowest iscompressed caplets.

Thus, we can see that there are a variety of reasons why herbaltherapies don’t have the desirable effect. The same concept alsoholds true in Western medicine: compliance, dose, strength, absorption and more.

We are cutting new trails in integrative medicine, and we don’t alwaysknow how food, chemicals, medications, herbs, vitamins andsupplements all intermix. The safest way to take herbs is to take thema couple hours apart and, of course, check with your physician.Oftentimes, people take too much. Sometimes stopping everything(except pharmaceuticals) –helps the patient feel better after a fewweeks. Sometimes there are too many cooks in the kitchen, or justtoo many substances going through the organs. I have seen this mostcommonly in patients with vague belly symptoms or dull headaches.

FibromyalgiaA hard term to say, even harder to understand

You might have heard of this term or know someone who has it. For acondition that affects over 12 million people in the United States, onemight think it would be better understood. Parkinson’s disease andMS (multiple sclerosis) each affect less than one million Americans, yet many people are familiar with those conditions. In fact, fibromyalgia is the second most common musculoskeletal conditionafter osteoarthritis.Fibromyalgia is a chronic medical condition, which causes widespreadpain in various parts of the body. The origin of the term is translatedas “muscle fiber pain”. It can be hard to identify, understand and treatsuccessfully. The diagram shown here displays the 18 tender points(9 pairs) that physicians use to diagnose this condition. There needsto be at least 11 of those points that demonstrate pain when pressureis applied. Someone with fibromyalgia will tell you how those tenderpoints seem to vary (or travel) from one day to another. There is no cure for fibromyalgia, but many forms of treatmentavailable. There have been 3 drugs approved by the FDA - two ofthem first used for depression, the other for seizures. The benefits ofmedicine have shown limited results, as has behavioral (cognitive)therapy. The more effective treatments for fibromyalgia are those thatfocus on diminishing those tender points and their debilitating lifestyleeffects. These clients need to break that vicious cycle of pain andavoidance, which leads to stiffness, postural changes and impropercirculation. This is done through therapeutic massage, trigger pointtherapy, proper body mechanics, education, nutrition, exercise, andbody awareness.

As a physical therapist that has treated hundreds of clients withfibromyalgia over the last 25 years, it is become clear to me that thebest outcome is the whole body approach. What that entails isinvolving all disciplines (medical, physical and behavioral therapy, nutrition, spinal alignment, pain management) along with the client’ssupport system (family, friends, caregivers, religion) to be “on thesame page” of what each of them provides that will improve theclient’s way of life. This approach needs to continue throughout theclient’s life, just as someone with high blood pressure or high bloodsugar needs to monitor themselves consistently. The WellnessExperience is best equipped to care for those with this challengingcondition. We have a team under one roof that cares andcommunicates about that one client – physical therapist, chiropractor, massage therapist, acupuncturist and nutritionist. Please call us at 561-333-5351 to schedule your appointment or visit www.wellness-experience.com

patient recently called thepharmacy in an absolute panic, wondering if the eye drops wecompounded for her last monthwere contaminated and if she

could contract meningitis. I was so surprised;I didn’t know how to answer her for a minute.Of course, I assured her it would be nearlyimpossible to contract meningitis from eyedrops and that we take extreme precautionsto produce sterile ophthalmic products.Although it was an uncomfortableconversation to have with a patient in suchmental distress, it served to provide me theopportunity to have the conversation with allof you.

As I am sure everyone has heard, in theprevious few weeks a certain compoundingpharmacy up north is facing charges forseveral cases of deadly fungal meningitis dueto contamination while compounding anepidural. Our deepest sympathies andprayers go out to those who have lost lovedones or have been injured in this situation. This is an outrageous, isolated occurrenceand is news no one hopes to hear, least of allother compounding pharmacies. When thingslike this happen, albeit rare, it shakes up theentire industry. As an owner of a compoundingpharmacy, one begins to take a closer look at

“Will I Get Meningitis?!”one’s own practices and hopes to find nodiscrepancies or short-comings.

To be fair, compounding indictablemedications is a whole different world thancompounding non-sterile medications. Thereare many more precautions to be taken whilecompounding medications that will beinjected directly into the body. Furthermore, injectables entering the cerebrospinal fluid(fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord)directly, i.e. epidurals, have even morestringent precautions to follow. The defensesare much lower in the central nervoussystem, which includes the spine and brain. Therefore, the slightest mistakes maybecome deadly. Most compoundingpharmacies do not partake in manufacturingof such delicate medications.

I would personally like to assure all thosewho are concerned about the safety ofcompounded medications that, at MyCommunity Pharmacy, we take EXTREMEprecautions to insure this type of error doesnot EVER occur. We employ state of the artequipment as well as follow aseptictechniques diligently to provide the absolutesafest products to our beloved patients.Additionally, we NEVER attempt tocompound medications for which our facility

A is not properly equipped. This includesepidurals. Please rest assured, yourcompounded medications from MyCommunity Pharmacy are absolutely safe.

If you find yourself questioning the need forcompounding pharmacies, consider this:

1. Without compounding pharmacies, hormone replacement therapy (HRT)would be virtually impossible.

2. Medications are phased out by largepharmaceutical companies whendetermined to be “unprofitable.”

3. Many doctors value the role compoundingpharmacies play in patient care.

4. We are able to cater to the SPECIFICneeds of each patient.

5. Manufacturers do not produce certainmedications for small patient populations, such as pediatric and veterinary patients.

In short, many essential medications areprovided by compounding pharmacies thatare simply not available from any othersources. Most compounding pharmaciesproduce quality, safe and effective products. We would like to sincerely thank those of youwho have put your faith in My CommunityPharmacy and we take it with utmostseriousness to continue to earn that faith.

Q: Mr. Topal, can you tell us the ideal hair cut for different faceshapes?

Muzo:Well, if you’re having a haircut with a pivot point technique, youmust discuss certain details with your hair designer. He/she has toknow whether you want your face or hair to stand out; also it would bea good idea to talk about your lifestyle, your weight, your height andeven your personality. After all, the hair designer would want the bestresult for your hair; so it’s important that he/she focuses on all theaspects above.

Q: How do you determine the style for each person who needs agood hair cut?

Muzo: First of all, as designers we have to know different faceshapes, then we have to understand the lifestyle of the client (wemight even have to make a character analysis of the individual). Inorder to have the best result in hair cutting, we have to see the shapeof the face and choose the best hair style for our client. Initially, I mustexplain the 7 different face shapes and their ideal models.

Round shaped face: This face usually has a soft andbalanced look. If the person is not happy with their roundfacial shape, and wants to have a more a narrow/oval look, then they must prefer a cut which gives volume. This way theemphasis will be more on the hair than the face. Cuts that

have front strokes will make your face thinner. (Pinches of hairaccumulated more on the front will make your face look thinner.)

Square shaped face: This type of face has more of a sharplook but it’s also a balanced shape. If you don’t want tochange the square shape of your face the best hair cut will bea square cut. But if you want to soften your complexion thenyou should prefer rounder styles. For example you can use

bangles or pieces of hair towards your temples.

Rectangular shaped face: If you have a rectangular faceand want it to look shorter, the chin level hair cut would beideal for you. This hair cut will give the face a more balancedlook.

Oval shaped face: If you have an oval face, you are in luckas this type of face will adhere to many different styles ofhaircuts. If you want to add a bit of length to your face, youwould have to prefer a long hairstyle, or get volume upwardswhich would give you a more rectangular look. I would

recommend angled bangs for this type of face.

Reverse triangle face:With this type of face it is easy tomake changes and apply different haircuts. It is also ideal formake-up. If you want your face to stand out more, you shouldprefer short hair styles by adding more volume upwards. But if you want to give your face a softer and balanced look,

then you should choose a haircut that creates more volume on theback of the neck, and less volume upwards (towards the top of yourhead).

Triangle shaped face: A triangle look might show people asless energetic and tired, but choosing the right haircut will adda more energetic look. The ideal cut is having short sideburnsand adding more volume upwards with square shaped cuts.

Diamond-shaped face: Almost any style haircut will go withthis face shape. Long, short, straight, wavy, or even bangleswould work fine for a diamond-shape face. You just need todiscuss some of the details with your stylist to determinewhich cut would suit you the most.

Is Your Metabolism Making You Fat?

Ever heard or used the excuse - “Oh Ihave a slow metabolism, that’s why Ican’t lose weight?” So how true isthat statement? Can your metabolicrate affect how much you weigh orhow quickly you lose weight? Is yourmetabolism the reason why thatwhen we age we mysteriously put onweight, even though we eat the sameamount and our exercise routineremains the same?

Before I answer these questions andmore, what is metabolism?

Your metabolism, experts say, involves a complex network ofhormones and enzymes that not only convert food into fuel but alsoaffect how efficiently you burn that fuel. In the simplest terms, metabolic rate is the rate at which your body burns calories. A calorieis a unit of energy. For the human body, it’s referred to as “foodenergy”.

The process of metabolism establishes the rate at which we burn ourcalories and, ultimately, how quickly we gain weight or how easily welose it. (To continue, visit www.AroundWellington.com and click on“Health & Fitness,” October issue).
