OPTIONAL RULES - JAPANESE BANZAI! - Over the previous editions of Blitzkrieg Commander, many optional rules have been developed either within the rules themselves or as house rules by various players and clubs. These rules are optional and all players participating in games where they apply must agree to their use in advance of starting the game. They can be played to represent specific scenarios or campaigns, or to add additional detail to a game. JAPANESE BANZAI! Banzai was a form of honorable death for the Japanese soldier, a last-ditch, last-resort action in a desperate situation. To initiate a Banzai attack, the Banzai units must be within initiative range of the enemy they are ordered to assault and the formation being ordered to Banzai must be below 2/3rds of their original starting strength (rounded down). A Banzai attack cannot be made using an Initiative action. Any attached Infantry Support heavy weapons are dropped (and therefore lost) and the crews are converted to riflemen at the same quality as the bulk of the formation. They will then join the charge. Only infantry and infantry support units can conduct a Banzai! attack. Only Japanese HQ units can attempt a command roll to order the Banzai attack, Japanese CO units cannot order these charges. The Japanese commander nominates which infantry and infantry support units will make the attack and also the enemy unit or formation to be attacked. These nominated Japanese units automatically acquire the Fierce Special Ability (BKC-IV - Page 76) if a successful command roll is made. All defending units (including those shooting in support) have a -1 modifier to all close range shooting (to represent panic and disbelief at the reckless speed of the Japanese advance). Only defenders within 5cm of the Banzai units may fire or fire in support of the defenders, but this excludes vehicles with AP weapons or Support units from other formations. If the charge strikes home, the Japanese troops fight using a +1 to their close assault value in the initial round of combat. The assault is fought out as normal, however the Japanese troops will never fall back. If the defender wins the combat round, it is played on as if it was a draw. The Japanese troops remain in combat and will fight to the end or until they are victorious. If the Banzai! charge is successful and the enemy units are destroyed, then the Japanese units involved are removed from the table but do not count as casualties. This prevents a Banzai unit from being used to recklessly capture an objective. The Japanese HQ which ordered the charge must make a command roll at the end of the assault. If all the Banzai units are destroyed in combat but did not destroy all the enemy combatants, and the command roll is successful, then the HQ is considered to have led the charge and died courageously with his men and is removed from the game. This HQ can be replaced (BKC-IV - Page 24) but does not suffer the -1 to his CV like other returning Command Units. If the command roll is failed then the command unit survives the attack but has a +1 modifier added to his dice rolls for all future command rolls, to represent his demoralization and the lack of honour accorded him by other Japanese formations he tries to order. This effect is not cumulative, so additional Banzai charges do not add additional + or -1 to the HQ’s dice. OPTIONAL RULES- JAPANESE BANZAI! -

Over the previous editions of Blitzkrieg Commander, many optional rules have been developed either within the rules themselves or as house rules by various players and clubs.
