Band Grade 6/Beginning Grade 7 Level I The Loudoun County Schools provide opportunities for any interested students to study instruments of the band. Students may study the basic woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments in like-instrument classes. The following proficiency levels are prescribed as goals to be met by the band student with an average of 105 minutes of instruction per week. Classes meet regularly on an alternating day schedule. Band Grade 6/Beginning Grade 7 Level I

The Loudoun County Schools provide opportunities for any interested students to study instruments of the band. Students may study the basic woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments in like-instrument classes.

The Wind Instrumentalist will:

Demonstrate the ability to sustain a tone in the middle of the prescribed range of the instrument as listed on Chart No. 1 for ten seconds (flute and tuba, five seconds).

Demonstrate the ability to play a simple musical line utilizing appropriate phrasing techniques (i.e. breath marks, longest note, two or four measures, phrase line, character of the phrase).

Demonstrate the ability to play slurred passages correctly, as noted in the method book, with the following exceptions: 1. The trombone student must tongue on all non-lip slurs.2. The brass student should begin lip slurs.

Consistently demonstrate correct hand positions for all standard percussion instruments.

Band - Grade 7 Level II

The Loudoun County Schools provide instrumental instruction in like-instrument classes of woodwind, brass, and percussion.

Prerequisite to membership in this program is Level I or equivalent study and experience. Level II is a continuation of basic fundamentals with more emphasis toward ensemble experiences. The literature played on this level is selected on the basis of the performing ability of the student members.

Demonstrate the difference between normal, accented, legato, staccato, and marcato articulations as determined by notation and musical style.

Demonstrate the ability to play a simple musical line utilizing appropriate phrasing techniques (i.e. breath marks, longest note, two or four measures, phrase line, character of the phrase).

Demonstrate the ability to play slurred passages correctly, as noted in the method book, with the following exceptions:

1. The trombone student must tongue on all non-lip slurs.2. The brass student should continue work on slurs utilizing theovertone series.

MII.10.3

Demonstrate the standard release of a tone without using the tongue.

Demonstrate the ability to tune the instrument, within acceptable limits, by listening to a pitch, singing it, and matching it on the instrument. Students should be given instruction on the use of tuning devices as one reference for proper intonation. Students should be aware of the basic inherent pitch problems with their particular instrument.

Band - Grade 8 Level III

Prerequisite to membership in this program is Level II or equivalent study and experience. Level III offers students the opportunity to perform literature requiring more advanced instrumental skills. The literature selected will be representative of a wide and diversified spectrum of band repertoire.

The following proficiency levels are prescribed as goals to be met by the band student with an average of 225 minutes of instruction per week. Classes meet regularly on an A/B Block schedule.

1. Brass students should demonstrate the ability to perform,with moderate facility, a three-note lip slur beginning onConcert Bb (second note above fundamental) ascending anddescending.2. Trombone students should demonstrate an understanding ofboth natural slurs and legato-tongued unnatural slurs. (Natural slur-slide moves out while pitch ascending or slide moves in and pitchdescends. Unnatural slurs-slide moves out and pitch descends orslide moves in and pitch ascends.)
