PRE-STATE ALIYAH

Approximately 450,000 Jews from Europe and the Middle East made a new home in Palestine prior to World War II. Some were driven from their home countries by anti-Semitism, while others came to pre-state Israel because of religious beliefs and/or Zionist ideology. These immigrants established cities, towns, and farming communities. Immigrants who fled Nazi Germany in the years prior to the war strengthened the urban areas of pre-state Israel and helped solidify the community’s financial well-being.

ALIYAH BET

Aliyah Bet refers to the illegal immigration of Jews to Palestine during the period when the British maintained strict immigration quotas. During the Holocaust, these quotas prevented many Jews from finding a safe haven in Palestine. After World War II, these quotas prevented Holocaust survivors from starting new lives in pre-state Israel. Passengers on Aliyah Bet ships intercepted by the British were detained on the island of Cyprus or in Atlit, near the port city of Haifa. The best-known ship, The Exodus, gained fame when it was the subject of Leon Uris’ book of the same name.

UNITED NATIONS VOTE

Following intense negotiations, the United Nations voted to partition Palestine into two states — one for the Jews and one for the Arabs. The vote, which came as a result of Britain’s decision to withdraw from Palestine, was decided by a 33-13 margin, with 10 abstentions. The Jews accepted the plan, while the Arabs rejected it. Celebrations by Jews in Palestine and around the world were eclipsed by intensified fighting between the two sides.

WAR OF INDEPENDENCE

(1948-1949)

EVENT q» o~ 5

On May 14, 1948, Israel declared its independence and immediately Israel’s neighboring countries — Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt — invaded the new state. The war had an enormous human cost: 6,000 Israelis were killed, representing 1% of the state’s Jewish population, including Holocaust survivors and other new immigrants. The war, which ended in an armistice agreement in 1949, resulted in Israel expanding its borders beyond the land that the UN Partition Plan had provided. However, Jerusalem was divided; the Old City was controlled by Jordan and Jews were barred from the Western Wall.

ALIYAH FROM ARAB COUNTRIES

(1949-1952)

EVENT q» o~ 6

As Israel gained independence in 1948, life became unstable for hundreds of thousands of Jews in Arab countries throughout the Middle East. Between 1949 and 1952, 49,000 Yemenite Jews were brought to Israel in Operation Magic Carpet, and more than 120,000 Iraqi Jews arrived via Operation Ezra and Nehemiah. During these years, centuries-old Jewish communities in countries such as Libya and Egypt suffered, and mass emigration (to Israel and the West) reduced their numbers significantly.

EICHMANN TRIAL

(1961)

EVENT q» o~ 7

Adolf Eichmann was a key figure in planning and implementing Nazi Germany’s “Final Solution” for the Jewish people. After the war, he disappeared and eluded arrest. In 1960, agents of the Israeli Mossad intelligence service captured him in Argentina and brought him to Israel. After a widely publicized trial, Eichmann was found guilty and sentenced to death. He was hanged near Tel Aviv in 1962, and is the only person Israel has ever sentenced to death.

SIX-DAY WAR

(June 5-10, 1967)

EVENT q» o~ 8

Early in 1967, Egypt took provocative steps that violated decade-old international agreements, including expelling UN peacekeepers. Fearing an imminent invasion, Israel pre-emptively attacked Egypt’s air bases on June 5. Syria and Jordan promptly joined the war, attacking Israel from the east. After six days of fighting, Israel won the war and tripled in size, gaining the West Bank, Gaza, Sinai, and the Golan Heights. Jerusalem was reunified and Jews were able to visit the Western Wall for the first time since the establishment of the modern state.

MUNICH MASSACRE

(September 1972)

EVENT q» o~ 9

During the 1972 Munich Olympics, Palestinian terrorists held 11 Israeli athletes hostage in the Olympic Village, demanding the release of hundreds of security prisoners held in Israeli and West German jails. The West German police’s ill-fated rescue attempt resulted in the massacre of all the Israeli athletes, and the death of 5 of the 8 terrorists. Israel’s secret service agency, the Mossad, later assassinated the remaining terrorists in a covert operation that became the subject of Steven Spielberg’s 2005 film “Munich.”

YOM KIPPUR WAR

(October 6-25, 1973)

EVENT q» o~ 10

On Yom Kippur, 1973, Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack against Israel. Most soldiers had been given leave for the holiday, so the IDF was ill-prepared for the onslaught on its northern and southern borders. During the time it took the IDF to mobilize its troops, some feared Israel would be wiped out. A massive US military airlift, ordered by President Nixon, helped turn the tide. While Israel was victorious, the war had a sobering impact. During the 20-day war, more than 2,500 Israeli soldiers were killed and many more were wounded.

OPERATION ENTEBBE

(July 4, 1976)

EVENT q» o~ 11

On June 27, 1976, Palestinian terrorists hijacked an Air France plane flying from Tel Aviv to Paris and diverted it to Entebbe, Uganda. They demanded that Israel release Palestinian prisoners held in its jails. After separating theIsraeli and Jewish hostages from the rest, the terrorists released the non-Jews. A week later, on July 4, the Israel Air Force sent 100 commandos on a daring rescue mission that saved all but four of the hostages. Colonel Yonatan (Yoni) Netanyahu (the brother of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu), who led the mission, was killed in the operation.

ISRAEL-EGYPT PEACE TREATY

(March 26, 1979)

EVENT q» o~ 12

After Egyptian President Anwar Sadat became the first Arab leader to visit Israel in 1977, Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin signed a formal peace agreement. This treaty, the first between Israel and an Arab country, was brokered by US President Jimmy Carter and signed at the White House. Egypt became the first Arab country to recognize Israel and Israel withdrew from the Sinai Peninsula. Most Israelis endorsed the treaty, but Egypt paid a heavy price: it was expelled from the Arab League and two years later Sadat was assassinated.

LEBANON WARS

(1982 and 2006)

EVENT q» o~ 13

Israel launched the First Lebanon War in 1982 after years of cross-border attacks by Palestinians operating from South Lebanon. What was to be a 3-day operation aimed at pushing the Palestine Liberation Organization 25 miles north finally ended when the last IDF troops returned home in 2000. The Second Lebanon War was ignited in July 2006 when Hezbollah killed three Israeli soldiers and kidnapped two more. Israel mounted an air attack against targets in Lebanon, and Hezbollah sent 4,000 rockets into Northern Israel before a UN-brokered ceasefire took effect in August.

ETHIOPIAN ALIYAH

(1984-85 and 1990)

EVENT q» o~ 14

Operation Moses, the first secret airlift from Ethiopia to Israel, brought 7,000 Ethiopian Jews from refugee camps in Sudan to Israel. Risking their lives to escape oppression, they left their villages and walked across the desert to neighboring Sudan. During Operation Solomon, 14,400 Jews were transported covertly from refugee camps in the Ethiopian capital to Israel. The rescue mission occurred in response to political instability in Ethiopia, as the government confronted attacks from rebel parties. Fearing that Ethiopian Jews were in danger, Israel rescued as many as possible in the 36 hour-long operation.

FIRST AND SECOND INTIFADA

(1987-1991 and 2000-2005)

EVENT q» o~ 15

The First Intifada (literally “shaking off” in Arabic) was sparked in 1987, when an Israeli truck driver struck and killed a Palestinian child in Gaza. Thinking it was intentional, the local population erupted in rage, throwing rocks at Israeli soldiers and civilians. The uprising spread to the West Bank and continued for more than three years. After a failed peace summit at Camp David in 2000, Palestinians launched an ongoing series of terror attacks which became known as the Second Intifada. The attacks included suicide bombings and attacks on buses and public places. The IDF responded with multiple military operations, and Israeli-Palestinian normalization efforts ended.

RUSSIAN/SOVIET ALIYAH

EVENT q» o~ 16

Under Soviet rule, Jews who applied to immigrate to Israel often suffered persecution and were forced to wait years for exit visas. In the 1970s, the Soviet authorities allowed approximately 250,000 Jews to emigrate, but then the gates closed again. Natan Sharansky, imprisoned in a Soviet jail, was the symbol of the millions of Russian Jews who couldn’t leave, known as refuseniks. In 1990, as the Soviet Union was collapsing, the gates reopened. In the next decade nearly a million Soviet Jews made aliyah in a massive relocation effort called Operation Exodus.

OSLO ACCORD

EVENT q» o~ 17

Israel and the Palestinian leadership began a process aimed at achieving peace, leading to the signing of the Oslo Accord in a ceremony on the White House lawn. President Clinton presided as Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Chairman Yasser Arafat, Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres signed the agreement. According to the terms of the agreement, the two sides recognized each other, the PLO rejected terrorism, and Israel agreed to grant autonomy to Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza. Polls showed that a majority of Israelis were more optimistic than ever that peace was possible.

ASSASSINATION OF PRIME MINISTER

YITZHAK RABIN

EVENT q» o~ 18

In an act that brought Israel to a stand-still, a right-wing Orthodox student who opposed the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians assassinated Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. The shooting took place at a large peace rally in Tel Aviv’s central square, moments after Rabin had joined the crowd in singing Shir L’Shalom, “Song for Peace.” A bloodied copy of the song’s lyrics was found in Rabin’s pocket. The overwhelming majority of the Israeli public rejected the religious and political extremism that led to the act. The square was renamed Rabin Square in his memory.

GAZA DISENGAGEMENT AND AFTERMATH

EVENT q» o~ 19

In 2005, Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip unilaterally. Soon thereafter, Hamas, which does not recognize Israel’s right to exist, gained control of Gaza, and Israel has kept the crossing points closed to most traffic. In 2008 and 2012, in response to rocket attacks from Gaza, Israel unleashed massive air attacks on terror targets in missions dubbed Operation Cast Lead and Operation Pillar of Defense. During the latter confrontation, most Hamas rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome anti-missile system, developed by Israel and the US.

SOCIAL PROTESTS

EVENT q» o~ 20

In the summer of 2011, tens of thousands of Israelis took to the streets to protest the high cost of living. Many spent weeks living in tents along Rothschild Blvd., a key artery in Tel Aviv’s financial district, and in similar tent encampments in other cities across the country. Rallying around a chant of “The people demand social justice,” protesters demanded relief from the high cost of housing and inadequate education and social welfare systems. The government responded by promising to work on improving the situation. Subsequent efforts to revive the protests have failed to spark public passion.

Located in the heart of the country, Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and its largest city. It fuses ancient and modern; the walled Old City includes the remnants of the ancient Second Temple’s Western Wall (Kotel), and the new city features shopping districts and sprawling residential neighborhoods. Old and new, all buildings are built from limestone, known locally as Jerusalem stone. Light reflecting off the limestone causes the city to glow in the sun, inspiring the song “Jerusalem of Gold.” Jerusalem is holy to Jews, Christians and Muslims.

WESTERN WALL

Widely viewed as one of the holiest sites in the world for Jews, the Western Wall (Kotel) is the remnant of the outer retaining wall that surrounded the Second Temple, which was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE. Jews traditionally pray at the Western Wall, especially on Shabbat and major holidays. Between 1948 and 1967, the Western Wall was controlled by Jordan, and Jews were not allowed to approach it. During the 1967 Six-Day War, Israel recaptured the Old City of Jerusalem, including the Western Wall.

The business and cultural capital of Israel, Tel Aviv features Israel’s tallest buildings, amazing beaches along the Mediterranean Sea, a thriving nightlife, shopping districts, and restaurants. Originally named Ahuzat Bayit, the city was founded by 60 families in 1909, making it the first Jewish city established in the modern era. This mountainous region in Northern Israel supplies one-third of Israel’s water needs. Located on the border of Syria, Jordan and Lebanon, Israel captured the territory from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed it in 1981. Neither Syria nor the rest of the world recognizes Israel’s sovereignty, and indirect negotiations have been held over the years in an effort to resolve the region’s status. The Golan includes Israel’s highest peak, Mt. Hermon, at over 7,000 ft., which turns into a ski resort during the winter months.

ATLIT DETENTION CAMP

Located in Northern Israel, the Atlit Detention Camp was established by the British Mandate officials during the 1930s, primarily to hold Jews who were captured while trying to enter Palestine illegally (known as Aliyah Bet.) In the early years, most of the detainees were refugees from Nazi Europe, and in the late 1940s many were Holocaust survivors. In a 1945 raid planned by the young Palmach officer Yitzhak Rabin, 200 detainees were freed. After Israel declared independence in 1948, the camp was used to house prisoners of war and was declared a National Heritage Site in 1987. Today, it is a museum of Jewish immigration to pre-state Israel.

Also known by the Biblical names of Judea and Samaria, the disputed territory was captured by Israel from Jordan in the 1967 Six Day War. Named for its location west of the Jordan River, the West Bank is home to more than 2 million Palestinians living under the autonomous rule of the Palestinian Authority, and over 300,000 Israeli Jews. The area’s rich Biblical history makes it holy to Jews, Muslims and Christians, and complicates prospects for a negotiated settlement. Israel says that the final status of the territory will be decided through Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.

MASADA

A large fortress overlooking the Dead Sea in Southern Israel, Masada was built by King Herod in the 30s BCE. Approximately 100 years later, Jewish zealots fled to Masada after the Romans destroyed the Second Temple. They lived there until the Roman siege in 73 CE, when their lives ended in a mass suicide. Today, people hike up Masada to watch the sunrise over the Dead Sea and view the remains of the ancient Herodian civilization.

Israel’s southern desert, the Negev, covers more than half of the country’s land but is home to less than 10% of its population. The word “Negev” relates to the Hebrew word for “dry;” in the Bible, Negev means “south.” The Negev includes the city of Be’er Sheva, David Ben-Gurion’s desert home in Sde Boker, military bases, Bedouin villages and towns, and many kibbutzim.

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

The Declaration of Independence, read by David Ben-Gurion on May 14, 1948, in Tel Aviv, details the Jewish people’s historic connections to the Land of Israel and chronicles the struggle to regain a sovereign home. In the absence of a formal constitution, it serves that function and sets forth a vision that ensures “complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex; it will guarantee freedom of religion, conscience, language, education and culture; it will safeguard the Holy Places of all religions; and it will be faithful to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.”

LAW OF RETURN

The Law of Return states that people with at least one Jewish grandparent, and their spouses and children, are entitled to Israeli citizenship. It was established in 1950 to enable Jews throughout the world to become Israeli citizens and promote aliyah (“ascending” or immigrating to Israel.) The law, intended to ensure that every Jew has a safe haven in Israel, is based on the notion that all Jews trace their roots to Israel and are entitled to return to their homeland.

KIBBUTZ

Kibbutz (derived from the Hebrew word for “group”) is a uniquely Israeli communal settlement. The first kibbutz was established in the early 1900s. During this time, most European immigrants embraced socialist values and agricultural development. The first kibbutz was Degania, built along the shores of Lake Kinneret. Today, there are over 250 kibbutzim in Israel. Kibbutz residents often eat in communal dining halls and participate in running collective businesses, including farming, factories and tourism.

ISRAEL DEFENSE FORCES (IDF)

David Ben-Gurion established the Israel Defense Forces soon after declaring independence. The IDF brought various pre-state fighting forces under one command and has earned a reputation as one of the world’s best armies. Acharai, Hebrew for “follow me,” is a key IDF value: Commanders lead their troops into the most dangerous battles rather than supervising from afar. IDF service is mandatory for most Israelis at age 18. Men serve for 30 months and women for 24. Most men and some women are required to serve in the reserves, called upon to supplement the standing army as needed.

SHUK

A shuk (outdoor marketplace) is a popular shopping venue that is found throughout Israel. Each major city has a permanent shuk, such as Shuk HaCarmel in Tel Aviv and Machane Yehuda in Jerusalem. Locals come to buy fruit, vegetables, meat, cheese, spices, clothing and more. Friday is the busiest day in the shuk, as many people rush to do their shopping before the stores close for Shabbat.

TEL AVIV PRIDE PARADE

Tel Aviv held its first Pride Parade in 1997, and the annual event, held in June, now draws more than 150,000 people, making it the largest gay pride parade in Asia. Other cities in Israel also hold annual gay pride parades, highlighting the rights and equal treatment enjoyed by LGBTQ Israelis. Gay and lesbian Israelis serve openly in the IDF and are protected by laws that prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation. Tel Aviv has been called one of the world’s gay-friendliest cities.

SECURITY BARRIER

In response to multiple terror attacks launched from the West Bank, Israel began in 2002 to build a barrier separating Israeli and Palestinian populations. Made mostly of barbed-wire fencing, about 5% of the barrier is a solid concrete wall. The Israeli government says the barrier is not a border and that the final border will be determined through negotiations. Palestinians say the barrier causes great hardship for many of them who are cut off from school, work or family. Since its construction, terror attacks have become a rare occurrence.

DRIP IRRIGATION

Faced with severe water shortages, Israeli farmers have always faced a challenge. In 1959, they invented drip irrigation, directing water to the places it is most needed and minimizing waste. The technology has been embraced by farmers around the world, saving billions of gallons of water annually.

ISRAAID

The Israel Forum for International Humanitarian Aid, established in 2001, brings together 35 Israeli and Jewish humanitarian aid groups to send relief missions to every corner of the earth. IsraAID was the first organization to set up a field hospital in Haiti after the devastating 2010 earthquake there, and provided aid to refugees from the Syrian civil war. IsraAID volunteers from Israel and the American Jewish community were on the frontlines in Oklahoma City after that city’s deadly tornadoes in 2013. Other efforts have impacted countries from Japan and the Philippines to Kenya and South Sudan.

SHEKEL

Israel’s currency, the New Israeli Shekel (NIS), uses the currency mentioned in the Bible. Banknotes – in denominations of 20, 50, 100 and 200 shekels – currently bear the likeness of political leaders from the country’s early years and Nobel Prize-winning author S.Y. Agnon. New notes featuring Modern Israeli literary figures are scheduled to be issued in 2014. Like many European countries, Israeli bills are issued in a range of bright colors.

SIREN ON YOM HAZIKARON

Israel marks Memorial Day for fallen soldiers during the 24 hours before Independence Day. The commemoration begins with a nationwide siren for one minute at 8 pm on the eve of Yom Hazikaron, bringing all traffic to a stop as people stand at attention and pay their respects. The following morning, at 11 am, the siren sounds for two minutes, stopping traffic and opening memorial services across the country. The timing of Yom Hazikaron is intentionally linked to Independence Day: Without the sacrifices of those who fight to keep Israel safe, the country would not be able to celebrate its independence.

MACHAL (VOLUNTEERS

FROM ABROAD)

Machal (based on the Hebrew name ‘Mitnadvei Chutz L’aretz’ – Volunteers from Abroad) enables people from around the world to volunteer for service in the IDF. Volunteers played a major role in the 1948 War of Independence, with American Mickey Marcus (of “Cast a Giant Shadow” fame) perhaps the most well known. More recently, Americans such as Alex Singer (pictured above) and Michael Levin, who volunteered for IDF service in the first and second Lebanon wars, respectively, have given their lives in the line of duty.
