GAUGE: 18.5 sts and 30 rnds = 4” (10 cm) in broken rib pattern, aſter blocking. NEEDLES: 1 - 16” (40 cm) US 7 (4.5 mm) circular, and 1 - 16” (40 cm) US 8 (5 mm) circular and set dpns, or size to obtain gauge. NOTIONS: Stitch marker (m), tapestry needle. SIZE: 18.25” (46.5 cm) brim circumference, 9.75” (24.75 cm) height. SKILLS: Knitting and purling in the round, decreasing.

WORTHY OF NOTE: This hat is reversible. If you would like to wear it both ways, when weaving in ends, be sure to do so carefully so they do not show on either side. When working the crown decreases, change to dpns when the stitches no longer fit comfortably on the circular needle.

BROKEN RIB PATTERN:Rnd 1: K all sts.Rnd 2: *K1, p1; rep from *around.Rep Rnds 1 + 2 for patt.

DIRECTIONS:BRIM: Using smaller ndls, CO 84 sts. Join for working in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts. PM indicating beg of rnd. Work in K1, p1 rib for 1.5” (3.75 cm). Change to larger ndls.

BODY: Work in Broken Rib Pattern until piece meas 8” (20.25 cm) from CO edge.

CROWN DECREAES: Rnd 1: *(K1, p1) 5x, k1, s2kp; rep from * 5x more - 72 sts.Rnds, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12: K all sts.Rnd 3: K1, *(p1, k1) 4x, p1, s2kp; rep from * 4x more, (p1, k1) 4x, p1, sl2, rem m, k1, p2sso, rep m - 60 sts.Rnd 5: P1, *(k1, p1) 3x, k1, s2kp; rep from * 4x more, (k1, p1) 3x, k1, sl2, rem m, k1, p2sso, rep m - 48 sts.Rnd 7: K1, *(p1, k1) 2x, p1, s2kp; rep from * 4x more, (p1, k1) 2x, p1, sl2, rem m, k1, p2sso, rep m - 36 sts.Rnd 9: P1, *k1, p1, k1, s2kp; rep from * 4x more, k1, p1, k1, sl2, rem m, k1, p2sso, rep m - 24 sts.Rnd 11: K1, *p1, s2kp; rep from * 4x more, p1, sl2, rem m, k1, p2sso, rep m - 12 sts.Rnd 13: *S2kp, k1; rep from * around - 6 sts.

FINISHING: Cut yarn, leaving an 8” (20.25 cm) tail. Thread through live sts and fasten off. Weave in ends. Soak in cool water and wool wash and block to measurements.
