June 3, 2013 Baker Street Station This week’s speaker was Victor Martin. His firm, Martin, Riley and Mock, purchased at that time the rundown Baker Street Rail Station. Victor gave us a history of the station and the process He went through to purchase and restore it to it’s glory days. The Baker Street Station was built in 1912 and was run by the Pennsylvania Railroad Group. During it’s hey day in World War II, over 3000 troops a day went through it on their way East or West. Ev ery President from Harding to Eisenhower stopped and spoke there. Victor did share with us that in the 1940’s and 50’s, the train station was where Santa Claus would come into downtown Fort Wayne and that event would draw thousands to view it. In 1990 some private citizens wrote grants to save the vacant train from being demolished and in 1995 his firm purchased it. They then started the long process of restoring it and attract other business to occupy the empty spaces within. Today a non- profit runs the concourse and Victor now finds himself writing a book about the process and history of Baker Street Station. There is an effort to return rail service back to Fort Wayne and Baker Street Station and Northern Indiana Public Rail Association is working at this time trying to make that a reality.

Victor gave us a history of the station and the process

He went through to purchase and restore it to it’s glory days. The Baker Street Station was built in 1912 and was run by the Pennsylvania Railroad Group. During

it’s hey day in World War II, over 3000 troops a day went through it on their way East or West. Every President from Harding to Eisenhower stopped and spoke there. Victor did share with us that in the

vacant train from being demolished and in 1995 his firm purchased it. They then started the long process of restoring it and attract other business to occupy the empty spaces within. Today a non-

profit runs the concourse and Victor now finds himself writing a book about the process and history of Baker Street Station. There is an effort to return rail service back to Fort Wayne and Baker Street
