In Reformed Protestant families,Psalm 90 is read, although this tradition is now

    fading away.[7]

At midnight,Glhwein(bisschopswijn) orChampagne is drunk. Many people fireoff their own fireworks, which are on sale from a few days before; towns don't organise a centralfireworks display. Public transport shuts down completely (the only scheduled time during theyear) between approximately 20:00 and 01:00.

On television a clock is broadcasted several minutes before midnight.

    [edit] New Zealand

Auckland is 496.3 kilometres (308.4 mi) west of theInternational Date Line and thus is the firstmajor city to see the beginning of the new year, however it isGisborne that is the first "city" in

the world to see the first sun rise for the year. In common with many other places it celebratesthis with large street parties and fireworks displays. Elsewhere inNew Zealand, local councilsusually organise parties and street carnivals and fireworks displays. In recent years however, liquor bans have been imposed on many of the more popular areas due to disorder, vandalismand other anti-social behaviour. During the day of New Year's Eve, in recent years, the BlackCaps have played a One Day International cricket game in Queenstown.

Filipinos usually celebrate New Year's Eve with the company of family and close friends.Traditionally, most households stage a dinner party named Media Noche in their homes. Typicaldishes includepancit,Hamon and if the family could afford it, Lechn(roasted pig), which isusually considered as the centerpiece of the dinner table. Barbecued food is also an integral partof the menu.

Most Filipinos follow a set of traditions that are typically observed during New Year's Eve.Included among these traditions is the customary habit of wearing clothes with circular patternslike polka dots, this signifies the belief that circles attract money and fortuneor other colorfulclothing to show enthusiasm for the coming year. Throwing coins at the stroke of midnight issaid to increase wealth that year. Traditions also include the serving of circularly-shaped fruits, shaking of coins inside a metal casserole while walking around the house, and jumping up highwhich is believed to cause an increase in physical height. People also make loud noises byblowing on cardboard or plastic horns, called "torotot", banging on pots and pans or by ignitingfirecrackers andpyrotechnicsat the stroke of midnight, in the belief that it scares awaymalevolent spirits and forces.

Urban areas are usually hosts to many New Year's Eve parties and countdown celebrationswhich are usually hosted by the private sector with the help of the local government. Theseparties usually display their own fireworks spectacles and are often very well attended.

    [edit] Poland

Polish Sylwesteris celebrated by parties with friends and fireworks. Drinking a glass ofchampagne exactly at midnight and raising toast for luck in the upcoming year is one of the mostcommon small traditions.

    [edit] Russia

Most Russians celebrate New Year's Eve with their families and close friends. The celebrationusually starts one or two hours before midnight and the common tradition is to "say farewell tothe old year" by remembering most important events of the last twelve months. At five minutesto twelve most of the people watch the president's speech on TV or watch popular New Year TVshows ("Goluboy Ogonek"). There is a tradition to listen to the Kremlin clock bell ('Kuranty')ringing twelve times on the radio or on TV. During these last 12 seconds of the year people keepsilence and make their secret wishes for the next year. After that they drink champaign and haverich dinner, watching TV concerts and having fun. Some people like starting fireworks outsideand visiting their friends and neighbors. As the 30th and 31st of December are working days, a

lot of people also have small parties at work, though 31st of December is mostly spent at homeor with friends. There is an old superstition that if the first visitor (especially unexpected one) onthe 1st of January is a man, the year will be good. People also try to start new year without debts.

New Year, hence called "novogodinja (new years) jelka". Around or after midnight, "DedaMraz" (Grandpa Frost) visits houses and leaves presents under the tree, to be unpacked then or, ifthe family is asleep, only to be discovered in the morning.

Restaurants, clubs, cafe's and hotels are usually full-booked and organize New Years

celebrations with food and live music.

However, Serbian New Year's celebrations are most known for the outdoors festivities inBelgrade, and several other major cities such asNovi Sad andNi. As of mid-December, citiesare extensively decorated and lit. The decorations remain until way into January due to thepersistent influence of the old,Julian calendar. Throughout the region, especially amongstformerYugoslav republics, Belgrade is known as the place to be for major parties, concerts andhappenings. It has become common for large groups of Slovene's to visit their former capital andcelebrate the beginning of a new year. Especially since the mid-nineties, street celebrations grewinto mass gatherings with hundreds of thousands of people, celebrating New Year on one ofseveral locations throughout Belgrade. During former President Miloevi's mandate, the

gatherings had a strong political connotation as well. As of 2000, every year the City of Belgradeorganizes several concerts with major national and international performers on Belgrade's majorsquares; the Republic Square, Terazije Square and in front of the Serbian (formerly Federal)Parliament building. The concerts commence early in the evening and last well into the morning.Usually, there are separate celebrations and concerts organized for small children (SlavijaSquare) and for elderly (Kalemegran park). Midnight is marked by major fireworks fired fromsuitable buildings within the city.

On January 1, the central Svetogorska street is closed for traffic and used to hold the"openhearted street" festival; food and warm drinks are served and open air theater plays areperformed, while families with children as well as politicians (often including the President)

walk down the street. The evening of the first of January is reserved for the so-called "repriza", arepetition of the previous night; people often go to the club, friends or square where they werelast night to celebrate once more. Slightly down-scaled festivities are organized.

On January 13, a large part of the population celebrates "Serbian New Year", according to theJulian calendar. This time, usually one concert is organized in front of either City Hall or theNational Parliament (in Belgrade), while fireworks are prepared by the Serbian Orthodox Churchand fired from the Saint Sava Temple, where people also gather. Other cities also organize suchcelebrations.

    [edit] The Former Soviet Union

In the former Soviet Union, New Year has the same cultural significance as Christmas has in theUnited States, but without the religious connotations. Russian, Ukrainian and other families fromformer Soviet Union traditionally install spruce trees at home, the equivalent of a Christmas tree.In Eastern Europe, there is the Ded Moroz, who looks similar to Santa Claus, except he wearsrobes, and instead of reindeer, he is pulled by a troika (i.e. a three-horse drawn sled). Familiesgather to eat a large feast and reflect on the past year. They have a large celebration, make toasts, and make wishes for a happy New Year. Families give presents to their friends as well as

Children stay up until midnight, waiting for the New Year. Also, during these celebrations many Russians tune to special NewYear shows, which have become a long-standing tradition for the Russian TV.

New Year is often considered a "pre-celebration" for the Eastern Orthodox living in EasternEurope, primarily in Russia and Ukraine, since Christmas is celebrated on January 7 according tothe Eastern Orthodox tradition.

Spanish New Year's Eve (Nochevieja orFin de Ao in Spanish, Cap d'Any in Catalan)celebrations usually begin with a family dinner, traditionally including shrimpandlamb orturkey. Spanish tradition says that wearing red underwear on New Year's Eve brings good luck. The actual countdown is primarily followed from the clockon top of the Casa de Correosbuilding in Puerta del Sol square in Madrid. It is traditional to eattwelve grapes, one on eachchimeof the clock. This tradition has its origins in 1909, when grape growers inAlicantethoughtof it as a way to cut down on the large production surplus they had had that year. Nowadays, thetradition is followed by almost every Spaniard, and the twelve grapes have become synonymouswith the New Year. After the clock has finished striking twelve, people greet each other and toastwith sparkling wine such ascava orchampagne, or alternatively with cider.

After the family dinner and the grapes, many young people attend New Year parties at pubs, discothques and similar places (these parties are called cotillones de nochevieja, after theSpanish word cotilln, which refers to party supplies like confetti, party blowers, party hats,etc.). Parties usually last until the next morning and range from small, personal celebrations atlocal bars to huge parties with guests numbering the thousands at hotel convention rooms. Earlynext morning, party attendees usually gather to have the traditional winter breakfast ofchocolateconchurros (hot chocolate and fried pastry).

In the United States, New Year's Eve is a major social holiday. One of the top destination citiesfor New Year's Eve from 2003 to 2006 has been New York. [10] Las Vegas is also attracting alarge number of New Year's Eve party goers with the famous Las Vegas strip being closed tovehicles and buses.

In the past 100 years the "ball dropping" on top ofOne Times Square inNew York City, broadcast to all of America (and rebroadcast in many other countries), is a major component ofthe New Year celebration [11]. The 11,875-pound (5,386 kg), 12-foot (3.7 m) diameterWaterfordcrystal ball located high aboveTimes Square is lowered, starting at 11:59:00pm and reaching thebottom of its tower 60 seconds later, at the stroke ofmidnight (12:00:00am). This is repeated inmany towns and cities across theUnited States[11] . From 1981 to 1988, New York City droppedanenlarged apple in recognition of its nickname. It is sometimes referred to as "thebig apple"like the city itself; the custom derives from the time signal that used to be given at noon inharbors.

From 1972 through 2007, Dick Clarkhosted televised coverage of the event calledDick Clark'sNew Year's Rockin' Eve, shown onABC, and now renamedDick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Evewith Ryan Seacrestfor the arrival of 2009. From 1956 to 1976 on CBS, Guy Lombardo and hisRoyal Canadians serenaded the United States from the ballroom of theWaldorf-Astoria Hotel onPark AvenueinNew York City. The Royal Canadians continued on CBS until 1978, andHappyNew Year, America replaced it in 1979, continuing until 1995. The songAuld Lang Synehasbecome a popular song to sing at midnight on New Year's Eve, with the Lombardo version beingthe standard.NBC also has hosted New Year's coverage; traditionally, the networks' late night

Fox, CNN, andFox News Channel alsohave their own New Year's specials.

    [edit] Communities

Religious CommunitiesMany religious communities have a tradition of New Year's Eve being known as "WatchNight". The faithful of the community congregate in worship services commencing NewYear's Eve night and continuing past midnight into the new year. The Watch Night is atime for giving thanks for the blessings of the outgoing year and praying for divine favorduring the upcoming year. Though held by some to have begun in the African Americancommunity, watch night can actually be traced back to a sect ofChristians known as theMoravianswho held the first Watchnight Service in Herrnhut,Saxony, in 1732. Thepractice was later adopted by John Wesley, the founder ofMethodism. Watch Night did

take on special significance toAfrican Americanson New Year's Eve 1862, however, asslaves eagerly awaited the arrival of January 1, 1863the effective date of theEmancipation Proclamation. This particular New Year's Eve became known as"Freedom's Eve."[12]

    [edit] Local celebrations

Many cities in the US have their own local version of the celebration, even while keeping an eyeon New York, and the New York-centric aspect of the holiday is diminishing.

In recent years, festivities in downtown Cleveland, Ohio have increased in popularity,

demonstrating a midwest style to the traditional New Year's festivities. Specifically, several barsincluding "Blind Pig" and more recently "Cadillac Ranch" host parties drawing thousands ofrevelers. The party at "Cadillac Ranch" is especially a sign of the revitalization of the Clevelandarea as its location is adjacent to the Health Line.

Many cities, echoing the New York tradition ofball drop, also descend or lower an object (or anenlarged representation of an object) For example, big balloon drops are traditional at theProfessionals Guild singles New Year's Eve parties in Sacramento and in the San Francisco BayArea.

The festivities in downtown Chicagotake place atNavy Pier, as fireworks are shot off next to the

pier.In some communities the objects dropped have special local significance.Orange County,California, Orange County, Texas, and Orange County, New York, all drop large oranges(Orange County, Florida, tried it briefly, but has since ceased doing so). There are also examplesof things going up. In Seattlethe countdown is done by raising the Space Needle's elevator andlaunching fireworks up the side of the tower until both reach the top at midnight. Also Atlanta,

New Year's Eve is a major event in Las Vegas, Nevada, where the Las Vegas Strip is shut downas several hundred thousand people party. New Year's Eve is traditionally the busiest day of theyear at Walt Disney Worldin Florida andDisneylandin California, where the parks stay openlate and the usual nightly fireworks are supplemented by an additional New Year's Eve-specificshow at midnight. InNew Orleans,Louisiana, another of the most popular New Year celebrationvenues in North America, similar crowds of hundreds of thousands gather in the French Quarter, particularly on Bourbon Streetand Canal Street, to celebrate the New Year.

Many cities also celebrate First Night, a non-alcohol family-friendly New Year's Celebration, generally featuring performing artists, community events, parades, and fireworks displays. FirstNight began in Boston in 1976 and is now found in over 60 cities nationwide. A similar

celebration is Providence, Rhode Island's Bright Night, and an artist-run arts celebration thatstarted when Providence's First Night went bankrupt in 2003.

[edit] Random gunfire and unapproved fireworks use

In several areas of the U.S., particularly majorurban areas, New Year celebrations arepunctuated by random celebratory gunfire which could potentially cause injuries or deaths.Police departments in many cities, aided by gun safety organizations, have attempted to crackdown on this practice through technology and stiffer penalties.

A New Year's Eve tradition in Hawaii and other areas is the un-condoned use offireworks by

local residents. Local governments have begun to severely limit this practice in recent years fornumerous reasons, including its effect on people with breathing problems, thrill-seeking butdangerous twists on fireworks use (e.g. hanging fireworks from power lines), and unintendedfires.

    [edit] Venezuela

In Venezuela, many of the traditions are very similar to the ones from Spain, with an over-emphasis in traditions that supposedly will bring good luck in the year forthcoming. Those whowant to find love in the New Year are supposed to wear red underwear on New Year's Eve; thosewho want money must have a bill of high value when toast, those who want to travel must go out

home while carrying some luggage, and so on. Yellow underwear is worn to bring happiness inthe New Year.

Usually, people listen to radio specials, which give a countdown and announce the New Yearaccording to the legal hour in Venezuela, and, in Caracas, following the twelve bells from theCathedral of Caracas. During these special programs is a tradition to broadcast songs about thesadness on the end of the year, being popular favorites "Viejo ao" ("Old year") byGaita groupMaracaibo 15and "Cinco pa' las 12" ("Five minutes before twelve") who was versioned by

    [edit] Songs

In English-speaking countries, a few popular songs are associated with New Year's Eve and it iscommon to hear them on the radio these countries on, or shortly before, December 31.

"Auld Lang Syne" (a Scottish folk song written byRobert Burns, the song most closelyassociated with the holiday)

"It Was A Very Good Year" by Frank Sinatra. "It's Just Another New Year's Eve" byBarry Manilow. "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" recorded by various singers, most of them

female. "Same Old Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg "Happy New Year" by ABBA "The New Year" byDeath Cab For Cutie "A Long December" by Counting Crows "New Year's Eve" by The Walkmen "New Year's Day" byU2

During the festivities for the year 2000,Prince's1999 was re-released and enjoyed increasedpopularity due to the song's namesake year. Will Smith also released a song entitled Will 2K,which also proved successful, owing to the lyrics' celebration ofmillennium parties. RobbieWilliams enjoyed a similar success with his 1998 singleMillennium

A song that may also receive some moderate airplay on this night as well is The FinalCountdown, for obvious reasons, which was recorded by the Swedish hard rock band EUROPE,who delivered a notable performance of the song on New Year's Eve 1999, with both of theirlead guitarists John Norum and Kee Marcello, the only such performance EUROPE ever hadwith both of them on stage together with the rest of the band.

    It's Another New Year...

    ...but for what reason?

"Happy New Year!" That greeting will be said and heard for at least the first couple ofweeks as a new yeargets under way. But the day celebrated asNew Year's Day in modern America was not always January 1.

ANCIENT NEW YEARSThe celebration of the new yearis the oldest of all holidays. It was first observed inancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, the Babylonian

New Year began with the first New Moon (actually the first visible cresent) after theVernal Equinox (first day of spring).

The beginning of spring is a logical time to start a new year. After all, it is the season ofrebirth, of planting new crops, and of blossoming. January 1, on the other hand, has noastronomical nor agricultural significance. It is purely arbitrary.

The Babylonian new yearcelebration lasted for eleven days. Each day had its ownparticular mode of celebration, but it is safe to say that modern New Year's Evefestivities pale in comparison.

The Romans continued to observe the new year in lateMarch, but their calendar was continually tampered with byvarious emperors so that the calendar soon became out ofsynchronization with the sun.

In order to set the calendar right, the Roman senate, in 153BC, declared January 1 to be the beginning of the new year. But tampering continued until Julius Caesar, in 46 BC,established what has come to be known as the JulianCalendar. It again established January 1 as the new year. Butin order to synchronize the calendar with the sun, Caesar had

to let the previous year drag on for 445 days.

THE CHURCH'S VIEW OF NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONSAlthough in the first centuries AD the Romans continued celebrating the new year, theearly Catholic Church condemned the festivities as paganism. But as Christianitybecame more widespread, the early church began having its own religious observancesconcurrently with many of the pagan celebrations, and New Year's Day was no different.

New Years is still observed as the Feast of Christ's Circumcision by somedenominations.

During the Middle Ages, the Church remained opposed to celebrating New Years.January 1 has been celebrated as a holiday by Western nations for only about the past

    400 years.

NEW YEAR TRADITIONSOther traditions of the season include the making of New Year'sresolutions. That tradition also dates back to the early Babylonians.Popular modern resolutions might include the promise to lose weight orquit smoking. The early Babylonian's most popular resolution was toreturn borrowed farm equipment.

The Tournament of Roses Parade dates back to 1886. In that year, members of the Valley Hunt Club decorated their carriages with flowers.

It celebrated the ripening of the orange crop in California.

Although the Rose Bowl football game was first played as a part of the Tournament ofRoses in 1902, it was replaced by Roman chariot races the following year. In 1916, thefootball game returned as the sports centerpiece of the festival.

The tradition of using a baby to signify the new year was begun inGreece around 600 BC. It was their tradition at that time to celebratetheir god of wine, Dionysus, by parading a baby in a basket, representing the annual rebirth of that god as the spirit of fertility. EarlyEgyptians also used a baby as a symbol of rebirth.

Although the early Christians denounced the practice as pagan, thepopularity of the baby as a symbol of rebirth forced the Church toreevaluate its position. The Church finally allowed its members tocelebrate the new year with a baby, which was to symbolize the birth ofthe baby Jesus.

The use of an image of a baby with a New Years banner as a symbolicrepresentation of the new year was brought to early America by the Germans. They hadused the effigy since the fourteenth century.

FOR LUCK IN THE NEW YEARTraditionally, it was thought that one could affect the luck theywould have throughout the coming year by what they did or ateon the first day of the year. For that reason, it has becomecommon for folks to celebrate the first few minutes of a brandnew year in the company of family and friends. Partiesoftenlast into the middle of the night after the ringing in of a newyear. It was once believed that the first visitor on New Year's

Day would bring either good luck or bad luck the rest of the year. It was particularlylucky if that visitor happened to be a tall dark-haired man.

Traditional New Year foods are also thought to bring luck. Manycultures believe that anything in the shape of a ring is good luck,

because it symbolizes "coming full circle," completing a year'scycle. For that reason, the Dutch believe that eating donuts onNew Year's Day will bring good fortune.

Many parts of the U.S. celebrate the new year by consumingblack-eyed peas. These legumes are typically accompanied by

either hog jowls or ham. Black-eyed peas and other legumes have been consideredgood luck in many cultures. The hog, and thus its meat, is considered lucky because itsymbolizes prosperity. Cabbage is another "good luck" vegetable that is consumed onNew Year's Day by many. Cabbage leaves are also considered a sign of prosperity, being representative of paper currency. In some regions, rice is a lucky food that is

    eaten on New Year's Day.

AULD LANG SYNEThe song, "Auld Lang Syne," playing in the background, is sung at the stroke ofmidnight in almost every English-speaking country in the world to bring in the new year.At least partially written by Robert Burns in the 1700's, it was first published in 1796after Burns' death. Early variations of the song were sung prior to 1700 and inspiredBurns to produce the modern rendition. An old Scottish tune, "Auld Lang Syne" literallymeans "old long ago," or simply, "the good old days."

    Introduction

All over the world, people welcome the new year for it is one of the oldest of all

holidays. Most New Year celebrations focus on family and friends. It is a time to

reflect on the past and envision a future, perhaps, in a world where people livetogether in harmony.

In the United States we celebrate the New Year on the first day of January

but not all New Year celebrations take place on the same day or in the same way!

Sometimes this is because people in different parts of the world use different

calendars. China and Israel keep a lunar calendar. It is based on the movement of

the moon around the Earth. Some countries celebrate in the spring when new

crops begin to grow or in autumn when the crops are harvested. Adults and

children have many different ways of welcoming the New Year. Wouldn't it be fun

to travel around the world and celebrate the New Year all year long?

    Task

It's party time! Our class will have a New Year's celebration to learn about the

cultural and religious differences and similarities between ourselves and other

diverse cultures. Each of you will be required to present the New Year traditions

from a different country or culture to the class (see list below), complete a chart(see Evaluation) for comparisons, and then plan a trip around the world to

experience as many of the New Year celebrations as possible in the year 2000.

Choose a partner and select one of the countries or cultures below for

    your research.

With the teacher's approval, you may also select a different country than

    the ones listed.
