This workshop will introduce you to new approaches in Contemporary Public and Participatory Art. Through hands-on art-based activities we will generate ideas that creatively respond to issues of environmental health in the Bacolod community. The best ideas will receive small grant awards to premiere your project during a large community event. The workshop is open to professional artists, designers, architects, as well as art, science and engineering students, ages 18 and older. Workshop Description: Through this workshop we invite participants to examine how their ideas and creative work interacts with the city of Bacolod and its endangered natural environments. By looking at new trends in public engagement through art, architecture, design, ecology, and economics, this workshop will help you to analyze how artists and makers can devise possible futures, while fostering new sites and audiences for their work today. During this workshop we will collectively create a dedicated space for dialogue, invention and experimentation called “The People’s Island”. This visionary, yet tangible space will come to life as a floating platform moving across Bacolod’s waterfront during a large community event. Workshop participants will be invited to contribute their ideas to this collective creation, and have the chance to receive a small grant for their own project. Workshop Leader: Felipe Castelblanco is an artist, educator and curator with 10 years of experience working with public and new media art. Felipe has created large participatory art projects in unusual sites, like rivers, rooftops and storefronts across the USA and Latin America. More at: www.felipecastelblanco.com
