Head Coach Julie Goodenough– Five Years at Abilene Christian –

School Record: 108-46 (.701) | Career Record: 397-266 (.599)

Hometown: Haskell, Texas | Family: Husband, Rob, and daughters, Bailey and Macy

Degrees: Associate of Arts in Science from West Texas College

l Bachelor of Arts in exercise and sports studies from Texas-Arlington

l Masters of Education in sports administration from Texas Tech

A veteran head coach with more than 20 years experience at all three NCAA levels, Julie Goodenough recently completed a successful fifth season leading the Abilene Christian women’s basketball program to its second straight Southland Conference regular-season championship and accompanying postseason berth to the WNIT.

The 2016-17 Wildcats posted a 23-9 record and tied Central Arkansas for the league’s best mark at 16-2. ACU also finished 108th (out of 349) in the NCAA RPI and received four points in the final CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll.

The team once again was led by its Class of 2017, composed of twin sisters Lizzy and Suzzy Dimba, Alexis Mason and Sydney Shelstead. This quartet pushed the team toward the top of the Southland and national rankings in rebounding and 3-point shooting as the Wildcats placed 12th nationally with 8.6 treys made per game and 47th in rebounding offense. ACU also posted the NCAA’s 13th best rebounding margin (+8.3) and ranked 49th with 15.4 assists per game.

The Dimbas and Mason were honored with all-conference citations with Suzzy receiving her fourth-straight nod to the Southland’s all-defensive team. Suzzy ranked among the league’s top-15 leaders in seven categories and tied for first with 1.5 blocks per game. Mason, meanwhile, finished third nationally with 3.4 3-point field goals made per game (93 in 27 games) despite missing five games due to injury.

At season’s end, the seniors were honored once more with the school’s Horizon Award and Suzzy Dimba was voted MVP by the ACU athletic staff. Goodenough too was honored for her contributions to the sport and community with the Kay Yow Heart of a Coach Award.

Goodenough’s record at ACU is 108-46 (.701) and following the Wildcats’ 78-56 win over Sam Houston State on Feb. 4, 2017 she passed Wayne Williams for fourth place on the school’s all-time win list. She won her 300th game as a collegiate head coach on Jan. 15, 2013, and four years later she won her 100th game as a Wildcat – at Northwestern State on Feb. 28 2017.

Leaving The Lone StarA native of Haskell, Texas, Goodenough became the program’s sixth head coach on March 27, 2012 and immediately transformed a program hindered by consecutive losing seasons into Lone Star Conference champions.

With many of the same players coming back from a meager 12-14 campaign, Goodenough maximized her roster’s talents and the Wildcats went on to share the regular-season title with Midwestern State at 16-4. ACU was picked to finish seventh, but rejected the naysayers with an overall mark of 21-7, which was the program’s

first 20-win season since 2004-05. The Wildcats also accepted their 12th bid to the NCAA DII South Central Region Tournament, which was their first appearance since 2008-09. The turnaround earned Goodenough co-Coach of the Year honors from the Lone Star Conference, making her the sixth Wildcat coach – Burl McCoy (1982-83, 1984-85 and 1985-86), Suzanne Fox (1995-96), Wayne Williams (1997-98), and Shawna Lavender (2007-08) – to earn this title.

Three players made all-conference and point guard Whitney (West) Swinford was voted the league’s Freshman of the Year. Three-seasons later she became the first Wildcat student-athlete across all sports to win both a Lone Star and Southland Conference team championship. The Wildcats ranked 12th nationally in scoring offense (74.8 ppg) during their final DII season, and averaged the seventh-most 3-point field goals per game with 8.4. ACU also possessed one of the best defenses as evidenced by its 16th-ranked scoring margin (12.7) and 23rd-ranked field goal percentage defense (.353). Opponents struggled year-round from beyond the arc, as the Wildcats boasted the third best 3-point field goal defense (.249).

Even as the program moved through its DI transition, ACU’s style of play remained the same with a focus on rebounding and 3-point shooting.

Transition GameACU went 84-37 (.694) in its four seasons as a transitional NCAA DI program, winning two Southland Conference Championships and qualifying for two WNITs. Fifty of those 84 wins were against the league, and included in the remaining 34 victories were triumphs against Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, UT Arlington and UTSA, plus tournament wins in Kansas City and Colorado Springs. The Wildcats also won two of three Preseason WNIT games.

Not bad for a program not promised a postseason. Team first wins, indeed.

During ACU’s introductory DI season of 2013-14, the Wildcats regularly eclipsed their own single-game three-point records. Overall, they connected on 291 of 873 long-range attempts (.333) and on Feb. 18, 2014 the Wildcats hit a record 18 treys on 50 attempts. The Wildcats went on to win eight conference games to place seventh out of 14 teams, and both Suzzy Dimba and Marquez made the league’s list of honorable mentions. Dimba also was the only league freshman voted onto the all-defensive team. Marquez flourished with Goodenough as her coach for two seasons, and as a senior she ranked among the Southland’s

www.ACUSports.com | #GoWildcats | #ACUE4C16

top-20 leaders in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals. Marquez made Second Team All-Lone Star Conference during Goodenough’s first year at ACU and finished her decorated career with 1,285 career points, 598 rebounds and 298 assists.

An 8-4 finish to the 2014-15 Southland season – following a 1-5 start – was a harbinger of things to come. The Class of ‘17 represented 4/5ths of the starting lineup with senior West Swinford there to guide her junior teammates into a transformative 2015-16 season. Those Wildcats won 26 of 30 games and held off Central Arkansas by one game to win the Southland Championship at 17-1 – a school record for conference wins. They then earned the program’s first-ever DI postseason berth into the WNIT where it lost 66-62 at UTEP in the first round.

After leading ACU to its fourth-consecutive winning season in as many years, Goodenough was named 2016 Southland Conference Coach of the Year and helped junior guard Alexis Mason win the school’s first conference Player of the Year trophy since 2001.

Goodenough later received Coach of the Year honors from The Rotary Club of Abilene and the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

Mason averaged a league best 17.5 points per game through her 30 starts and shot an impressive 42.8 percent from the floor while knocking down 35.7 percent of her 3-pointers (89-249). Additional accolades went to Suzzy Dimba, who received Second Team All-Conference honors as well as her third consecutive All-Defensive Team citation, while junior Sydney Shelstead made Third Team All-Conference for the second straight season.

ACU’s starters all averaged 10.0 or more points per game with three players ranked among the top-10 conference leaders in rebounding: Lizzy Dimba (7.8), Sydney Shelstead (7.4) and Suzzy Dimba (7.7). Mason led the team in scoring followed by Shelstead (14.1), Suzzy Dimba (11.8), Whitney West Swinford (11.0), and Lizzy Dimba (10.1).

Each Wildcat starter averaged 10.0 points per game or better in 2014-15, while four starters with the exception of Lizzy Dimba (9.8 ppg) in 2013-14 averaged 11.0 or more points per game. This trend continued into 2016-17 with Mason again leading the Wildcats with a 16.3 scoring average. Suzzy and Lizzy averaged 13.1 and 12.1 points per game, and Shelstead contributed 11.6.

Big Country LegendThe 2015-16 was Goodenough’s finest season since leading Hardin-Simmons to a 26-2 record and the NCAA DIII Sweet 16 in 2001-02. Her highest season win total of 27 came during the 1999-00 campaign after leading the Cowgirls to the Elite 8.

Goodenough was a 2007 inductee into the HSU Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of her nine-year 188-54 record, leaving as the winningest coach in school history. Her last four teams advanced to at least the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 and also coached her team to the NAIA national tournament in her first two seasons.

She captured seven Trans-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association or American Southwest Conference titles. She also recruited quality student-athletes as her last seven teams were named to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Honor Roll as one of the top 25 teams in grade point average in the nation.

She coached three All-America selections and 34 all-conference selections and 46 academic all-conference selections. Her teams won the first four ASC Conference Tournaments in league history. She also served as an assistant athletic director and senior women’s administrator at HSU. Goodenough was the head coach at Hardin-Simmons University from 1993-2002 before going to Oklahoma State for three seasons. She was then the head coach at NCAA Division I Charleston Southern from 2006-12. Goodenough is 397-266 (.599) in 24 years of collegiate coaching with 188 of those wins coming in her nine seasons at HSU. She was 23-61 in a short, three-year stint at Oklahoma State and 78-105 in six seasons at Charleston Southern. During her final three seasons as the Buccaneers’ head coach, she went 48-45 and took the team to play at Minnesota in the Women’s Basketball Invitation (WBI).

At Oklahoma State, Goodenough recruited and coached Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Nina Stone and posted the 19th best recruiting class in the country in her first full season. Five of the top 10 largest home crowds in school history occurred during Goodenough’s tenure, including the largest crowd to ever watch a home women’s basketball contest.

A 1991 graduate of Texas-Arlington, Goodenough and her husband, Rob, have two daughters, Bailey and Macy, both of whom are enrolled at Abilene Christian.

Coaching StaffErika LambertAssociate Head Coach – 2nd Year

Erika Lambert recently finished her second season as the associate head coach for the Abilene Christian Women’s Basketball team. She was named to her current position in June of 2015.

Lambert has close to a decade’s worth of experience coaching at the collegiate level, eight of which have

been with NCAA DI programs. Her responsibilities with the Wildcats include coordinating all recruiting efforts, oversee post player development, and lead the program’s alumni relations and community outreach efforts.

ACU head coach Julie Goodenough and Lambert previously worked together during the 2011-12 season at Charleston Southern University. That year’s team won 17 games and qualified for its second postseason appearance at the Women’s Basketball Invitational in three years.

Lambert assisted with the instruction of the Buccaneer shooting guards on a team that ranked fourth in the nation in 3-point field goals per game. She also coached All-Big South Conference shooting guard Rachelle Coward, who finished her career with a 4.0 grade-point average and title of Big South Conference Student Athlete of the Year.

After Goodenough departed for Abilene Christian, Lambert stayed on board for one additional year at Charleston Southern

as an assistant to head coach Fred Applin. Lambert took over the development of the team’s post players during this season and helped former Wildcat graduate assistant coach Lakeitha Alston earn All-Big South honors behind 16.6 points per game.

During the 2013-14 season Lambert joined Ohio Wesleyan as a volunteer assistant coach and helped the Battling Bishops go from eight to 18 victories, and in 2014-15 she contributed to Bethel (Minnesota) University’s 21-win season, which included an at-large bid to the NCAA DIII Tournament.

As a student-athlete at the College of Charleston, Lambert battled through a series of knee injuries to play in 100 games (74 starts) and provide over 700 points, 400 rebounds and a school record 164 blocked shots. The Mannsville, N.Y., native was a two-year team captain for the Cougars and four-time selection to the Southern Conference All-Academic Honor Roll. One of her best games came against Kennesaw State in December of 2007, during which she scored a career-high 26 points, off a personal-best 13-for-16 effort from the field.

Lambert graduated Cum Laude from the College of Charleston Honors College in 2008 with bachelor’s degrees in corporate communication and historic preservation. She later earned her Master’s of Public Administration from the College of Charleston in 2010.

Lambert is an active member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and The Alliance of Women Coaches. She also co-facilitates Moms In Coaching, which is a group dedicated to supporting mothers in college basketball coaching at all levels. Moms In Coaching is officially recognized by the WBCA. Lambert, and her husband, Paul, have two daughters, Ava and Mya.

Kyle FelanAssistant Coach – 3rd Year

Kyle Felan has spent three seasons with the Abilene Christian women’s basketball team as its assistant coach and director of analytics. He was named to his current position by head coach Julie Goodenough in May of 2014.

His responsibilities to the Wildcats include that of academic coordinator, video coordinator and post-player development.

Felan came to Abilene after spending four seasons working in several roles for the women’s basketball coaching staff at Texas A&M University. He graduated from there in May of 2014 as a Regent Scholar with a Bachelor of Science degree in sport management and minored in business administration.

With the Aggies, Felan traveled to one Big 12 Tournament, two SEC Tournaments and three NCAA Championships.

Felan married former ACU softball player Lyndi Smith in August of 2015.

Erik DeRooAssistant Coach – 1st Year

Erik DeRoo recently finished his first season as an assistant coach for ACU’s women’s basketball program. He was named to his current position by head coach Julie Goodenough in June of 2016.

His responsibilities to the team include that of travel director, point guard development, facilities coordinator and scout team manager.
