It was a funny feeling the meaning after seeing the shining production of the American tribal love-rock musical Hair at the Herberger Theatre in Phoenix. Headlines blared- bombings in Gaza; suicide bombers in Baghdad; ground offensives in Afghanistan; bombs in Aspen, Colorado! Shocking, to say the least, and that’s not including Wall Street and bailouts. Is this our age of Aquarius? Regardless of these glaring news stories, there was still a candle of light as Arizona Theatre Company “let the sun shine in” with enthusiasm and hope in a fantastic production of this controversial musical. It was a production laced with messages and images long forgotten, yet still screaming for expression. Director David Ira Goldstein picked a protest musical just in time to support a new era of hope and peace that is upon us, delivering the message with enough flower power to get the grandparents dancing in the aisles! From “Aquarius”, “Hair”, and “I Got Life” to “Where Do I Go”, “Easy To Be Hard” and “Good Morning Starshine”,

this tribe was ready to party and put their collective soul on the line in a moving revival of the 60’s counterculture! Leading our colorful cast of liberal hippies is Kyle Harris as Claude, who moved us through a fantasy trip with a sparkle even Timothy Leary would have admired. His voice and presence kept the flow of Hair alive and moving. Also keeping the flames of love and passion burning are Joey Calveri as Berger, Rashidra Scott as Dionne, Michael Buchanon as Woof, Morgan James as Shiela, Kyle Taylor Parker as Hud, Lauren Lebowitz as Jeanie, and Erica Sweany as Crissy. This tribe was in sync all night and lifted the audience with spirited vocal expressions concluding with this generation’s favorite, “Let the Sunshine In”. I would recommend everyone see this production while the tribe is still in town and seats are still available! It’s a celebration worth seeing. Cry Tiger: Inner Conflict Meets American DreamBy Nicholas Connell

As the title suggests, Cry Tiger has plenty of drama and emotion to go around in this new play by Valley resident Mel Weiser that was produced by Optimistic Productions. This is a story about generations, choices, compromises, perceived fame, ‘maybes’ and ‘what ifs’ that always haunt those who look back at illusions of the past. I was also struck by the allusions to Marlon Brando’s famous movie line, when he declared emphatically, “I could’a been a contender!”. This story is wrapped around a middle class Jewish family in Brooklyn during the post WWII era. Kids and houses and boats were the American dream then, and only a few thousand dollars would get you on the playing field. But there is more to this story than just ‘things’. There’s Harvey Perlman, played intensely by Cliff Smith. Harvey is an artist wrestling with family life and his unfulfilled dream of fame and fortune

in the trappings of the world of art. His verbal attempts to make sense of this conflict are equal to his unspoken moments, both of which eventually raises the family temperature until the water boils over. But Cliff isn’t the only one harboring doubts and regrets in this family. Ira Ehrlich, his father in law, played to perfection by Ted Raymond, has been smothered and frustrated too long by the needs of others. He wants to make sure Cliff doesn’t end up like him, which finally leads us to our tragic revelation and conclusion. In between these story arcs, there are poignant and revealing moments with other members of this family. Cry Tiger is a play about choices that we all have to make in life. Sometimes the winds of desire and passion can be strong enough to sustain a life of art and sometimes not. I would recommend you see this ‘Tiger’ before it heads off for Broadway. In Scottsdale to promote her upcoming film, The Wrestler, Marisa Tomei was showered with praise from press for her performance as Cassidy, an exotic dancer whose age is beginning to hinder her career. Adding to her unhappy state is the physical toll her body is taking from being an entertainer. Life becomes even more complicated when Cassidy becomes involved with a long-time customer known on the independent wrestling circuit as Randy “The Ram” Robinson.

Local critics were not alone in praising Tomei for what is easily her best performance to date. She has now been nominated for a Golden Globe for “Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role.”

Tomei’s film credits date back to 1984, and while making a recurring appearance on TV’s A Different World, it was the 1992 comedy My Cousin Vinny that made her a household name. Some of Tomei’s best work has been done in

lesser-known films such as Marilyn

Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing & Charm School (2005), Factotum (2005), and

War, Inc (2008).

In 2007, Tomei raised eyebrows when she appeared in a risqué love scene in Before the Devil Knows Your Dead. With The Wrestler, Tomei once again takes on a bold character and sheds quite a few clothes. In terms of her revealing scenes, Tomei joking says, “You don’t really notice it when you are reading the script, because it says ‘they are in the club and Cassidy dances.’ Then the dialogue starts. Then as I looked closer, I was like, ‘Wait a second, how long was that dance and what is required of me?’”

That type of role had not crossed Tomei’s mind. “It just came down to fate,” she says. “It wasn’t planned. It wasn’t connived, it wasn’t wished for. It is just what I was offered. I got there through realizing that I wanted to work with Darren (Aronofsky) and the script was one of the best I had read.”

As a supporting role, Cassidy parallels Randy’s character. “She’s good at what she does,” explains Tomei. “She’s still in the game, the same way Mickey’s character is, and in the same way she is being forced out. Maybe it’s her knees that hurt, or it’s her body betraying her on some level, and it’s going to eventually in the next five years make it impossible for her to do what she’s doing.”

When asked how she is able to land such riveting and/or memorable characters,

Tomei replied, “A lot of it is luck, and maybe that I read a lot of plays. I have some sense of structure and character. But, mostly it’s luck.”

Having worked in front of the camera and on stage gives Tomei the opportunity to use a variety of skills: “I like the mix. I like that I can take something from film, such as the spontaneity and the really, really detailed work. I can take that to the stage. From the stage, I can take craft and approach.

What’s next for Tomei?

“I’m going to see what comes my way and hope for the best.”

Darren Aronofsky knew how The Wrestler was going to end. “That was the first shot I came up with for the movie,” explains the 39-year old, Brooklyn-born director. “I went to the writer and I said, ‘I know how it ends… but how he (the

main character) gets there, I have no idea.’” Luckily, a story came together. The end result was chosen to be screened at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, and won the coveted Golden Lion award.

In The Wrestler, Mickey Rourke plays Randy “The Ram” Robinson, an aging wrestler on the independent circuit in New Jersey whose career is about to come to a halt because of age and physical limitations. With no other skills, hope for a life after wrestling is dim. He seeks comfort from a stripper named Cassidy (Marisa Tomei) who is experiencing a similar bump in the road of life. While the story is dramatic and at times tells a sad narrative on the paths we choose for ourselves, there are numerous wrestling sequences that required expert direction and skill. To keep the story authentic, and stay within the confines of a budget, Aronofsky chose actual settings and regular people for the film.

“We basically put on real wrestling promotions, with real wrestlers and real wresting fans,” he explains. “The whole idea was to stick Mickey in as much reality as possible. In between matches, Mickey would run out and shoot a couple parts of the fight, and before the audience started to boo, we would put on another match and leap frog that way inch by inch. We basically got two or three takes of each scene and that was it. We would have to live with whatever we had.”

To get ready for his role, Rourke put on 35 pounds, and underwent months of weightlifting and wrestling training. But Aronofsky and his crew had a lot of work to do as well. “We spend a lot of time at these independent wrestling shows all over New Jersey, Upstate New York, Massachusetts… all over the Northeast; meeting a lot of wrestlers, hearing their stories and making a movie out of it,” he

says. “The film shows how it is planned and plotted, but how there’s actual physicality to it.”

About winning the Golden Lion? Aronofsky responded, “I was happy and a little nervous. I didn’t know how the film was going to do there, but you always get nervous when you show it to an audience. It’s all gravy when you win an award, but it’s really about making something that’s entertaining.”

As you know, the ‘buzz’ has already started growing as the date for the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards approaches. Full scale campaigns have been launched

to push the movies, the actors, and the studios behind them, and to get the voting press members’ attention while at the same time stimulating the consumer. The studios want to sway the press who vote for the Golden Globe winners, while the Oscar® winners are voted by motion picture industry professionals. Movie goers express their choices through the People’s Choice Awards. After the declared winners from this year’s Golden Globe Awards

on January 11th are announced, the road to the Oscars® is officially open.In 1944, a group of journalist from around the world was in Hollywood to deliver an impartial view on motion pictures and their impact. Phoenix- A trip to one of Phoenix’s more famously un-famous eateries like the Original Wineburger sometimes requires a clean mental slate, so that the accolades and awards that hang from its ‘signature mantel’ don’t have the opportunity to affect objectivity. Then you remember that another wineburger joint a little south and east of your location may be the one you probably read about most recently, but in you walk regardless, because you’re freakin’ hungry and The Spirit is starting in 40 minutes across the street at the Christown Mall Harkins, and because the KFC, Taco Bell, and Carl’s Junior dotting the surrounding landscape didn’t sound nearly as appealing.

My dinner companion and I decided to pull our version of a prank on the cozy, diner-style restaurant by ordering away from the clear menu staple- wineburgers and their delectable variations- so I went with fish ‘n chips and she ordered the Reuben. Unfortunately for us, the operation did not have enough servers to accommodate our Generation X sense of timing, as one spunky, young, and tireless veteran server had both the main dining area and the spacious side game room to cover. Though she was game, she and the cook manning the open grill were vastly outnumbered, and though a full, dripping Reuben and three giant fish sticks with spiced fries eventually came to the table

steaming hot and full of promise, it was with only ten minutes ‘till show time.

Oh well; we can rent a movie, I thought. Paying nostalgic respects to childhood palate pleasers takes form in fish ‘n chips for me; like when I order apple juice on the airplane ride home to see gwam-ma. I’m interested to see how seriously places take their ‘Friday Fish Frys’ and the like, and whether having the item on the menu in the first place does the establishment a disservice. The Original Wineburger half-asses the presentation by serving the plate with an unopened personal container of store-bought tartar sauce, but the fish was certainly not the worst I’ve tasted. It was hot, the batter was not too oily or chewy, and the fish broke apart in my mouth in supple layers as opposed to the stringy, fleshy texture of inferior products. The Reuben was large and delicious, with much of the cheese that had at first threatened to make a mess of things holding its place on the bread and meat once exposed to cooler air.

The Original Wineburger’s un-wineburger menu provides an adequate supplement to the grape-y cow candy it produces, so try it out when you can, though give yourself a little more time than you expected if dinner and a movie is in the itinerary. Where and when do you spin? Every week for “Fused Fridays” at Bar Smith, and the monthly “Pop Shop” at various venues. Oh, and China at the end of the month!

How did you get started in the industry?When I was in high school a lot of my friends and I were really into electronic music, and every summer in Phoenix there was an all ages club night that would bring in out of state DJs. I remember thinking ‘I want to do that; I want to make people dance and move through music’, plus I’d also played instruments since I was 9, so I had the passion. I saved up, bought some turntables and a mixer, and started playing for my friends after school until I made a tape (yes a cassette tape) good enough to give as a demo. 6 months later, I started DJing the clubs and it all snowballed from there.

What will people hear when they listen to your music?It could really be a wide range of dance music, from deep house to electro, progressive, techno, funk, etc. To me it’s not so much about genre as it is about quality tracks that grab you and make you feel like you can’t help but move. Also, I think one style can get repetitive, so building a real sound-scape by going through different moods of music is what keeps it fun on the dance floor.

What is your goal as a DJ?In the short term it is to help build the Phoenix club scene. We’re on the verge of becoming another nightlife hotspot on the U.S. map, and it takes time and work to put together unique and quality events on a regular basis. But we’ve been lucky to have veterans in town that have laid a solid foundation for what we’ve got today, now it’s time to push it even further.

If there is a “Golden Rule” for being a DJ, what would it be?Do it because you truly love the music! There’s a lot of DJs that get into it because they want their 15 seconds of fame, or because it’s cool, but they never succeed because they don’t get it, and the crowd can tell.

Your favorite place to play?Bar Smith is where I have the most fun DJing. It’s in the middle of downtown on

the rooftop so you have the skyline view, the staff is awesome, and the crowd there is so into the music, that you really get the chance as a performer to vibe off their energy. Out of state my favorite place is Miami; I had the chance to DJ for the Ultra Music Festival, and it was simply an amazing experience.

If you could change one thing about the DJ-club scene, what would it be?I suppose that everyone could just get

along. In any industry there’s competition, which is healthy, but sometimes people get a little carried away and perhaps greedy.

What would you be doing if you weren’t DJing?I always keep busy, so besides spinning, I also do TV production. The balance between the two works really well and I’ve found that the network of people in both industries crosses over pretty often.

There are a number of ways a person could be illegally “driving under the influence” (DUI) and subject themselves to prosecution. For example: A.R.S. § 28-1381(A)(1) deals with a DUI for being “impaired to the slightest degree”; A.R.S. § 28-1381(A)(2) deals with a DUI when your blood alcohol concentration is 0.08 or higher; A.R.S. § 28-1381(A)(3) deals with a DUI when there “is any drug defined in section 13-3401 or its metabolite in the person’s body.” There are various other sections that deal with when a DUI can be a felony as well (as opposed to a misdemeanor).

The bottom line is you can get a DUI as a result of drinking and driving and as a result of taking drugs (legal and illegal) and driving.

The problem with the (A)(3) charge referenced above is that some of the drugs that are listed in the statutes can be legally used with a valid prescription. What that means is even if you are validly using the drugs you could be exposing yourself to a DUI. . . this is true for the (A)(1) charge as well: If the drug that you are taking is legal and as a result of taking it your driving is “impaired to the slightest degree” you are once again exposed to a DUI citation.

The moral of the story is if you are taking illegal drugs-don’t. If you do take illegal drugs and drive you could find yourself the subject of a DUI investigation and/or citation.1 If you are taking prescription drugs and drive you probably should consult with your health care provider and/or pharmacist about whether what you are taking could “impair you to the slightest degree”. If they need help with what “impair to the slightest degree”

means as far as the law is concerned have them contact your attorney to discuss it. If you have been cited for a DUI you should likewise contact your lawyer immediately for help and guidance. It can be a minefield out there. . .

I have driven a lot of hybrid cars over the years, and have learned several things. First, they operate better in city driving than freeway. Second, they are more efficient in cold weather than warm (Batteries don’t like heat, you know). And third, the greenies who tell you they get 60 mpg in these things are lying. But I am getting ahead of myself. Since I was taking a business trip to New Mexico, I decided to take the Toyota Prius. I figured that 1,600 miles would give us an example of real world gas mileage on it. My trip involved hard city commuting, high speed highway cruising, climbing steep mountain grades, and many other conditions. I noticed this car wasn’t very quick, as expected with only 110 horsepower pulling 3200 pounds. But it was a comfortable cruiser, with a soft ride and low wind noise. It was also expensive; base price to loaded: $22,000 to $29,000. And the mileage? It varied from a low 28 mpg on steep hills to 45 mpg in 55 mph construction zones. But the overall figure for 1,600 miles was 40 mpg. Whether this fuel savings justifies the high price tag is your decision. But if you’re in the business of delivering pizzas, it could be worth a look.

Hello, freaks!

Well, we’re a week into the New Year. How does it feel? Only 8 % who

make New Year’s resolutions will actually achieve success. I might be

early, but I say “Way to go!” to that 8%. For the rest of us who don’t

believe in such masochistic traditions, I tip my hat to you. I’m not sure

if I don’t make resolutions because I enjoy my vices and don’t want

to give them up, or if it’s because I’m truly happy with my life and

wouldn’t actually want to change anything. Then again, it could just

be laziness. Either way you look at it, it works for me. If you made a

resolution, shoot me an email and tell me what your resolution is. You

actually increase your chances of success by sharing your goal with

others because it holds you accountable. Maybe we can up that statistic

to 9%.

In other music news, Fall Out Boy released Folie à Deux (“madness

for two”) recently and the unoffi cial tween rating is “meh”. In this

self-proclaimed “statement record” Pete Wentz (bass player and

chief lyricist) has turned song writing focus away from his personal

experiences and has instead drawn from the outside world. It’s not

as poppy and catchy as previous releases and while Patrick Stump’s

vocals are still amazing, it seems to have lost just a smidge of tween

adoration. They just don’t get the lyrics. This modifi ed, slightly mature

approach might start appealing to an older demographic. Worse things

could happen.

On Friday, January 9th, Kris Roe (The Ataris) will be joined by It’s Like

Love, February State and Bring on the Fame for an all ages show at

Chyro Arts (1330 N. Scottsdale Rd. in Scottsdale) at 7:30pm. Tickets are

Sun City- The Alexander String Quartet, considered one of the world’s premier ensembles and now in its 27th year, will perform the first concert of the new year on Chamber Music West’s 2008-09 performance schedule with compositions by Mozart, Beethoven and Ravel at 7:30pm on Monday January 12th. The Alexander String Quartet features Zakarias Grafilo on violin; Frederick Lifsitz on violin; founding member Paul Yarbrough on viola; and Sandy Wilson on cello. The performance follows a 6:30pm preview lecture, ‘Speaking of Chamber Music,’ at Faith Presbyterian Church, 16000 N. Del Webb Blvd. in Sun City. Former Arizona Republic classical music critic Dimitri Drobatschewsky will lead the lecture. The ensemble will perform Mozart’s String Quartert in B-Flat Major, K458 Hunt (1784); Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 11 in F minor, Op. 95 Serioso (1810); and Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major (1902-03). Widely admired for its interpretations of classical composers, the Quartet has also established itself as an important advocate of new music through more than 25 commissions

and numerous premiere performances.

Remember When…It’s 1984. Kevin Bacon stars in Footloose as a teenager who moves to a small town from Chicago, who -in order to have a senior prom- takes on the oppressive town government that has banned dancing and rock music. Corny or not, the story was loosely based on events that took place in the small farming community of Elmore City, Oklahoma. More importantly than the plot, cast list or (heaven forbid!) rock music being outlawed, how can we forget how our lives that were changed by this movie? Cards Prove Playoff Mettle; Hold off FalconsGlendale- With Arizona’s 30-24 round playoff victory over the visiting Atlanta Falcons, they have unquestionably proved to the football world that this is a complete football team, capable of winning pretty, winning ugly, and fi rmly closing out games in which they have outplayed their opponent all day. The Cardinals defense made a swarming statement, intercepting rookie darling QB Matt Ryan twice, with Cards’ DB Antrel Rolle’s return of a botched handoff putting the team ahead for good. The offense found balance of its own, as RBs Tim Hightower and Edgerrin James combined for 96 yards and QB Kurt Warner (19-32, 271yds, 2TDs, 1int) spread his passing yards among nine receivers, with Larry Fitzgerald (6rec, 101yds, 1TD) and Anquan Boldin (2rec, 72yds, 1TD) supplying their usual protein-packed punch to the secondary feast.

Why Larry Fitzgerald is the Best Receiver in the NFLThough hard to believe, Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald does his most impressive stuff off the fi eld. He only makes news away from the gridiron when he’s hosting a charity event, like the fundraiser at Eddie Matney’s for the Big Brother/Big Sister program this past Holiday, for example. Other actions outside the white lines that don’t make the news, however, certify Fitzgerald as the modern day standard to which all wide receivers, and all football players in general, should hold themselves up to:

With 2:48 remaining in the 3rd quarter of the Cardinals’ fi nal regular season game against the Seattle Seahawks, QB Kurt Warner completed a 15-yard pass to Fitzgerald in the Seahawks defense’s soft spot, and he was quickly engaged from behind by DB Marcus Trufant. As Trufant stood him up, LB Will Herring came at Fitzgerald from the front side and leveled him with a vicious clothesline. The blow bent Fitzgerald violently backwards, though he managed to hold on to the ball and secure the fi rst down. Any other receiver in the league, possibly with the exception of teammate Anquan

Boldin, would have needed assistance off the fi eld. Fitzgerald, however, in the true warrior spirit that he brings to this highest level of competition, popped up to his feet and made his way to the sideline. Cameras caught him as he waited until safely behind his standing teammates to take a knee, unstrap his helmet, take a few deep breaths, and blink away the stars. After being savagely decked by the opponent, Fitzgerald made sure not to show the effects until he was out of sight. It nearly made me weep with admiration.

This singular play in a meaningless game is as much an affi rmation of his status as the NFL’s premiere pass-catcher, as are 96 catches, 1431 yards, and 12 touchdowns. His silent leadership through painful example is indicative of a Cardinals team that has started to get tough at just the right time.

Round 2: Red Birds Rumble with Balanced, Experienced PanthersCharlotte, NC- An NFC Championship game awaits the Cardinals if they can put another complete game together against the powerful Carolina Panthers on January 10th, in what would be a remarkable feat for a franchise whose last playoff win occurred before credit cards were invented. The Panthers bring in some serious studs on both sides of the ball, including active NFL tackling leader LB Jon Beason (138tack, 3ints) and speed freak WR Steve Smith (78rec, 1421yds, 6TDs), who is second only to Larry Fitzgerald among active league yardage leaders. Add to that the eye-popping running prowess of RB DeAngelo Williams (273att, 1515yds, 18TDs)- who, by the way, takes care of the ball better than any back in the NFL, fumbling not once the whole year- and you have a deep, seasoned, complete Carolina attack. The Cardinals defensive front will have to pass the test of the trenches against a Panther ground machine that averaged 150+ yards/game, and Arizona as a team has to pass the test of statistics as they try to beat an opponent that has not lost at home all year.

Defragment the Hard DriveA hard drive spreads your data out all over the place. When you defragment the hard drive, your computer puts all the data back together and it will be able to access programs/files much faster. In Windows XP, access this tool by going to: Start…All Programs…Accessories…System Tools…then Defrag.

Each has a singular vocal style and individual approach to playing piano and the combination creates musical magic. Long is known for his satiny vocal style and always-swinging piano work; Roberts for her sensual vocals, high-energy keyboarding and Uzi-speed scat singing. What is it about yoga that attracts people? It certainly invites the spotlight due to celebrity usage and testimonials, and various poses have appeared in all types of marketing campaigns. While it is becoming part of the norm and no longer an enigma due to its high-profi le exposure, many yoga practitioners are captured by the physical release and fl exibility it offers, while others enjoy its stress relief and pain management benefi ts. Many doctors are referring their patients to yoga classes for back care, relaxation, anxiety, blood pressure, weight loss, depression, and more. Yoga also offers universal accessibility, as it is fi t for any age group! We will continue to see the rise in the popularity of yoga in gyms, studios senior centers, wellness spas, doctor’s offi ces,

and corporations.

Yoga is an incredible tool for promoting health, for recovering from illness as well as taking proactive measures to prevent disease. Stress is shown repeatedly to be the culprit behind many diseases, and Yoga is the perfect antidote for preventing stress and creating harmony and balance in the body and mind. When we decrease stress in our lives, we are able to heal and live each day worry-free.

Restorative yoga is a special healing type that assists the body and immune system. The practice of restorative yoga offers complete support to the body with the use of various props such as blocks, straps, blankets, and bolsters. This unique practice of yoga comes from the Ivengar style, which has given therapeutic applications for our yoga practice. While it may seem that these passive postures aren’t doing much since

there’s limited activity, they are incredibly healing and work deeply on the nervous system. Even sleeping brings about brain activity, so consciously resting in restorative postures gives your body what it craves most: total relaxation.
