DAVIESS COUNTY TEST PLOTS
PURPOSE: To provide reliable data on the yield potential of the brands that are best
suited for this area. Through these plots, we attempt to provide educational information in
an unbiased and scientific form to the producers of the area.
PLOT LOCATION: Variety trials were implemented in all areas of the county. Plots
were located to the west, south, and east of Owensboro, representing various soil types,
planting dates, and rainfall amounts.
COUNTY-WIDE PLOT FORMAT: To increase the comparison of a variety from one
plot to another, we developed a plot design that required each plot to follow the same plan.
In the plan, we required that the check is placed after every three varieties so that we could
make a reliable adjusted yield calculation. An adjusted yield calculation was figured using
the surrounding check yields as a basis. Also, to allow the check variety to be evaluated,
the third check in each plot was calculated and adjusted on an individual basis and the
results enclosed in parenthesis.
To allow producers to gauge the dry-down ability of the hybrids, we have included
the maturity days of each one.

2018 Crop Year in Review
Clint Hardy Extension Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources Education – Daviess County
Each fall I muse over news, challenges, and weather events that recap the year
farmers had. It is an interesting way to capstone the plot and production data included in
this publication and a method to document one of Daviess County’s most important
industries. I hope you enjoy reading the next couple of pages as you reflect on the events
that made the year for us. What an interesting year it turned out to be!
Every farming year begins with a reflection on the previous crop. Wow, what a
crop 2017 was! The average corn and soybean yield for Daviess County exceeded all-time
records. Farmers felt empowered by the yield potential of their land. They had a sense of
expectation to yield their way to prosperity during this period of lower grain prices relative
to the 2006-2014 era of profit. Within an attitude of yield possibility lies the realization
that an environment out of man’s control ultimately determines the fate of annual growing
crops. The five most recent years have provided weather favorable for yields, statistically
increasing the likelihood of crop adverse weather in 2018.
January arrived and the euphoria of high yields continued with every load of grain
delivered. The concept of global warming was far from reality during the extremely cold
month. More than two weeks of daytime highs below freezing heaved soil to depths of
more than a foot. This is the prescribed medicine for reducing soil compaction and slug
populations. Thousands of acres of soybeans were replanted in 2017 after being thinned
from slugs. The thawed soil loosened to tilled condition, which was evident by spring
rains causing roads to crumble and significant field and creek bank erosion. Overall,
January was dry with nearly no snow and the trend continued into February. Temperatures
remained cold, but dry fields provided an opportunity for some tillage and ammonia
placement before rainfall would pause activities.
The ammonia that was placed in February would lie more than eight weeks before
planting could begin. Heavy rain in the last week of February rose rivers and creeks
putting much of Daviess County under water. So many roads were closed; schools were
canceled the first few days of March. Continuing rain to our north caused a slow river fall.
March was cold and wet. The month passed with nearly no field work completed and
farmers began to recognize a late spring occurring. Cold weather continued the first week
of April with freezing temperatures and the winter’s only accumulation of snow! A change
in weather came mid-month and the scramble to catch up was initiated. The last half of
April was ideal for corn emergence and early growth. In general, the 2018 Daviess County
corn crop was delayed by two weeks but the next two months would allow it to catch up.
May arrived hot and dry with scattered storms late in the first week. Thousands of
acres of corn were planted and farms with two planters changed one to soybeans in the
second week. The scattered storms continued through the month, but widespread wet spells
did not occur, keeping planting progress under way. Tobacco planting began with fewer
acres than in 2017 due to contract purchase reductions. 2017 tobacco was a good crop and
profit had interest in the crop higher than in recent years. Heavy storms fell for three days
in the last week of the month. This would become the first growing season weather event
to reduce yield in certain low-lying fields and flood some creek bottoms to require
replanting. May rolled into June which had some late corn planted early in the month
while full season soybean planting quickly wrapped up. Most of the month was dry and
hot, ideal for crop growth. Concern of freeze damage in April had wheat growers on edge.
The crop was delayed last fall due to dry soils preventing emergence but an April freeze
can spell disaster. Almost miraculously, delay in winter growth provided an opportunity
for wheat to escape injury and it did quite well. Planted acres were down but yields and
quality were normal.
The greatest surprise of July came in the first days when everyone received a lesson
in growing degree day accumulation. The earliest corn, planted two weeks later than
normal, was exhibiting tassels in the first days of the month, earlier than expected. This
came as a surprise but was not unusual considering the heat and clear skies, which pushed
the crop to grow fast in May and June. There were a few days in June when it seemed as if
growth was so rapid it could be seen. Heavy storms late in July again flooded low bottom
fields resulting in the need to plant a third time for some. Fungicide applications were
continuous throughout the grain fill period and most farms were able to control
waterhemp, which is now the most problematic weed in our area. Very few dicamba
related crop injuries were reported, due in part to the large percentage of dicamba tolerant
beans planted in 2018 and the educational effort made in the winter to help growers
understand how to safely use the technology.
August was a slow period for farms as crops were laid by and tobacco harvest set to
begin. The month was hot and dry, concerning for farms who had very late corn filling
kernels and soybeans filling pods. Scattered showers popped up but little rain late in July
followed by no rain in August was concerning to farmers. The heat continued and with
September approaching, the early corn began to show signs of drying. Unlike drought
years, only a few acres of corn were harvested in the month as heat and sunshine continued
to dry the crop and allow tobacco harvest to progress.
Corn yield anticipation was the topic of discussion in early September as combines
were staged to roll. The memory of 2017 remained in discussion, but 2018 had been quite
different. March floods, April freezes, and May, June, and July storms with water ponding
followed by a near drought in August had everyone wondering what the outcome would
be. What people discovered as harvest began was a crop that suffered from too much
I - 6
water in certain soil types still produced good yields overall. Some farms reported yields
exceeding those of 2017 while most were on par. There was enough yield lost from water
to curb the county average from setting any records, but the crop was above the trend yield.
The heat stayed through the month and dried the crop rapidly in the field. Corn harvested
the week of Labor Day dropped 1.5 points a day! Heavy rain late in the week stopped
harvest for a few days but it picked back up as drying conditions returned.
Heat and humidity are expected in September but the first two weeks of October
left people somewhat annoyed as humidity prevented soybeans from drying. Corn harvest
was finished for most, leaving combines parked or harvesting beans with moisture.
Soybean quality became an issue as phomposis seed decay affected some fields that
needed to dry out. Cool weather, typical for October finally arrived late in the second
week. Soybean harvest resumed and some farms chose to plant wheat, capturing a small
gain in the market relative to full-season soybeans in 2019. Rainfall in the third week
continued to delay soybean harvest. The temperature reduction was also the opportunity
for most farms to begin tobacco market preparation. While the crop outcome is undecided,
many fields were affected by excessive rain in the most important growth stages. Most
expect the crop to be far below the quality and yield of 2017.
November arrived to deposit nearly 5 inches of rain across most of the county in
the first few days. Only a few acres of crop remained unharvested, requiring drying
conditions before completion could occur. Despite high overall yields, grain farm
profitability is set to again be lower for the fourth consecutive year. Large global stocks
and trade tariffs continue to forecast a slow return to profit. Farmers will endeavor to
persevere, but taking time to study the cost/benefit of every decision is imperative to
remain solvent in this period of profit decline.
