DESCRIPTION

Ever since the beginning of sports, athletes have been searching for anything to give themselves a competitive advantage over the competition or to simply make competing easier. Weight training, game tapes, specialized gear, coaching techniques and even superstitions have been used to give athletes that extra bump to get to the top. A similar approach is taken in the business world with companies going to extra lengths to make their job easier and more efficient. That’s why, for the fourth edition of Imagine, we’re focusing on local Jimmy John’s restaurants and how Kidwell helps make them become freaky fast.

In ‘The Business Balancing Act’ Brent Bunz, the owner of several Jimmy John’s restaurants, tells us from his point-of-view just how Kidwell has helped keep his business life in check. ‘The Perfect Key’ explains how Jimmy John’s has entirely removed the stress of physical keys from the restaurant and in ‘Freaky Fast Monitoring’ we see how Kidwell installed surveillance cameras in each restaurant that can be viewed from anywhere with an internet connection.

‘Technology Take Over’ shows how Kidwell has allowed Brent to forget about the technology side of his franchises and focus entirely on the business side.

The work of a restaurant owner is not easy. Like most businesses, it’s essential to stay one step ahead of the game or else everything will fall behind. For instance, miscounting during inventory check could result in a shortage until the next delivery day; therefore, resulting in unhappy customers and a loss of income all from a simple math error. And unfortunately, there are many tasks at Jimmy John’s that have little room for error. Brent has been working at reducing the number of these types of mistakes from his first day on the job. He double and triple checks his work, keeps a personal relationship with his customers and - most importantly - he hires the right people.

Just like other managers in the service industry, Brent hires all of his employees based off of previous work experience, employee references, work ethic, and whether or not he or she will help improve the restaurant. It’s no wonder why Brent chooses Kidwell as his go-to IT expert.

Kidwell was hired to take over and monitor Jimmy John’s employee computers, access control, Internet devices and surveillance cameras in each restaurant. Kidwell monitors each device remotely from Kidwell Network Operations Center. If an employee computer takes a dive, Kidwell is alerted immediately and can reboot the PC without stopping into the restaurant. The same corrective response is given to any device that experiences an unexpected malfunction.

By having Kidwell take over the technical side of Brent’s job, he is able to focus more on the business side of his restaurants, and provide better service and care to his customers. “I never have to worry about my systems going down. Even on Christmas Day when Access Control was having problems," says Brent, "Kidwell still came out and resolved the issue that day.”

With service like that, it doesn’t look like Brent will have to worry about the technical stuff for quite some time.

Jimmy John’s opens its doors everyday at 11:00 a.m. to serve sandwiches to its hungry customers. But in order to prepare sandwich after sandwich, a few employees need to show up a few hours earlier to prep for the lunch rush. The f irst employees on the job are given access to the restaurant through a specially designed Access Control.

Installed by Kidwell, Access Control is run with a series of FOB readers that are placed near the main entrances of the restaurants. When an employee needs inside of the restaurant while the doors are locked, he or she places his or her’s FOB card next to the reader. The door will unlock and the reader will record who entered and at what time.

The FOB system is able to remove physical keys from employee’s pockets entirely. The doors at each restaurant are set on a timer and are programmed to unlock when the restaurant opens and to lock when the restaurant closes. Something else employees never have to worry about again is having their set of keys lost or stolen. If a FOB key happens to disappear, Kidwell or an authorized user can deactivate the key within a few seconds. Saving time and about $400 to rekey the restaurant each time a key vanishes.

The ability to control who has access to the restaurant is a feature that helps Jimmy John’s operate smoothly and securely. It keeps the restaurant safe at night and eliminates, the need to remember to lock the door when the restaurant closes - making sure Jimmy John’s is ready to go bright and early for the morning prep.

Brent Bunz is the owner of five Jimmy John’s restaurants in Lincoln, NE and has recently expanded and opened three new restaurants in Iowa, five in Houston, TX and is also developing more than 20 new restaurants to open in the Houston area. Each location utilizes several services provided by Kidwell that eliminates stress and errors from Brent’s job.

Brent isn’t just a business owner, he also works full time as an ER doctor, and has a lifetime job as a family man at home. Trying to find the perfect balance between the three is like trying to balance himself on top of a beam, once he's steadily balanced, a lot of work must be done to stay there without falling off. Lucky for Brent, he found a ledge to help him keep his balance.

From the beginning, Brent has hired Kidwell to help keep him balanced. Right away Kidwell installed an IP surveillance system and remote access for the doors. Kidwell remotely monitors both systems so that in the case of an error, it can be remedied immediately.

Keeping track of everything that happens in five restaurants is not an easy task. Luckily, Kidwell is able to manage and report information directly to Brent. Twice a month Kidwell audits the systems in place and reports information to Brent. Whether Brent is at home in Lincoln or visiting one of his new restaurants in Houston, he knows exactly what is going on in each and every restaurant. Information including: Suggestions for improvement, who has used the remote access and when, and any possible errors with either system. Brent relies on these updates. “The information helps me out so I don’t need to worry,” he says.

Brent has had a standing relationship with Kidwell since he opened his first Jimmy John’s in 2006. “I wanted to work with Kidwell because of their reputation around town,” Brent says. “I’m happy with the services that they provide.”

Services that help Brent stay calm even though he is juggling being a business owner, doctor and family man. These services help him keep his hectic, yet rewarding, life balanced.

J i m m y J o h n ’ s consistently keeps a steady stream of customers going in and out of its doors. The lunch rush typically brings in the largest haul of customers, but a random monsoon of sandwich hunters is a common occurrence. A daily challenge for Jimmy John's employees is being able to keep a constant eye on a packed house of customers. However, keeping watch on each customer is necessary for the security of the restaurant, and the safety of its employees.

Faced with the problem of keeping watch on several busy restaurants, Jimmy Johns asked Kidwell what they could do. After assessing Jimmy John’s situation and needs, they were able to recommend IP video surveillance technology. This particular type of video technology records in color and stores several weeks worth of recorded video. Powered and controlled with only a simple Ethernet data cable, installation and maintenance are tasks as simple as slicing bread.

The IP cameras broadcast their feed onto the main computer at each restaurant location allowing a manager to review the video if a situation arises that requires extra attention. The video feed is even available to a few individuals not in the restaurant. With a special login and password, approved employees and managers can view the surveillance camera video from their home computer or mobile phone. Managers

can check-up on any restaurant, at any time, from five miles or 1000 miles away.

As it turns out, keeping a constant eye on a restaurant isn’t as difficult as it seems. It only requires the correct type of video technology and a company that is able to monitor the equipment for errors at all times. Something Kidwell has been doing for the past six years.
