Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Ave Verum Corpus

Ave, Ave Verum Corpusnatum de Maria Virgine.Vere passum immolatumin cruce pro homine:cuius latum perforatumaqua fluxit et sanguine.Esto nobis praegustatumin mortis examine.

Hail, hail true body, born of the virgin Mary, truly having suffered sacrificeon the cross on behalf of man.Whose pierced sidetrickled water and bloodbe thou for us a foretastein the test of death.

The Ave Verum Corpus is one of Mozart’s last works, and one of his most wellknown. It was most probably composed for use in a small church in Baden nearVienna where Mozart’s friend Anton Stoll was the choirmaster. It appears to havebeen written with the limitations such a choir in mind and so it has a simplicitythat makes it relatively easy to perform. This does not take from Mozart’smasterful voice-leading, combined with the perfect use of modulation, and a subtleintroduction of polyphony to intensify the ending.

Jubilate Deo

Jubilate Deo omnis terra, servite Domino in laetitia:laudate nomen ejus, quoniam suavis est Dominus. Alleluia.

Make a joyful sound to God, all the earth.Serve the Lord with gladness:praise his name, for the Lord is gracious. Alleluia.

Jubilate Deo is a Latin motet based on psalm 100, commonly attributed toMozart. It is at a lively pace with a mostly cheerful character. It ends with a brightsequence of descending Alleluias.

Benedictus

Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini.Hosanna in excelsis.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.Hosanna in the highest.

The Coronation Mass was written during Mozart’s last years in Salzburg.Mozart was experiencing difficulties with his employer who yearned for a moreplain and simple style of church music. This piece provides an illustrative exampleof how Mozart’s music was anything but plain and simple. It contains ideas thatwould later be developed in Mozart’s famous opera, The Marriage of Figaro, andthe featured Benedictus is stylistically similar to the rondo of a sonata.

You ladies, who know what love is,See if I have it in my heart!I'll tell you what I'm going through,It's new to me; I can't understand it.I feel a liking full of desireThat now is pleasure, now is agony.I freeze, and then feel my soul burning,And in another moment go back to freezing.I look for a good outside myself,I don't know who has it, I don't know what it is.I sigh and groan without wanting to,I quiver and tremble without knowing it,I find no peace night or day,And yet I like suffering this way!

Ah, I feel it; it has vanished –forever gone, the happiness of love!Never will you, blissful hours,

come back again to my heart.See, Tamino, these tears flow, beloved one, for you alone. If you do not feel the longing of love, then peace will come to me in death.

Laudate Dominum

Laudate Dominum omnes gentes, laudate eum omnes populi:Quoniam confirmata est super nos

misericordia ejus.et veritas, veritas Domini manet, manet in aeternum.Gloria patri et filio et spiritui sancto, sicut erat in principio, et nunc et semperet in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

Praise the Lord all nations, praise Him all ye people:For his merciful kindness is great toward us.

And the truth of the Lord endureth, endureth forever.Glory to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit,As it was in the beginning, and now and alwaysand in ages of ages. Amen.

Laudate Dominum is part of a setting of liturgical psalms, Vesperae solemnesde confessore. The character of the piece defies contemporary conventions, featuring a beautiful soprano aria complemented by a soft choral texture.

Lacrimosa dies illa

Lacrimosa dies illaqua resurget ex favillajudicandus homo reusHuic ergo parce, Deuspie Jesu Dominedona eis requiem. Amen.

Tearful that day,on which will rise from ashesguilty man for judgement. So have mercy, O God, on this person.Compassionate Lord Jesus, grant them rest. Amen.

The Requiem is the most celebrated of Mozart’s sacred works and was left incompleteat his death in 1791. Mozart’s pupil Franz Xaver Süßmayr completed it, though thereis much debate over the extent of his contribution. Of the featured Lacrimosa section, only the first 8 bars exist in Mozart’s autographed score. However it is likely thatSüßmayr discussed the section with Mozart before his death or even completed it withthe use of Mozart’s notes. Mozart’s extensive use of contrast while maintaining thesolemn mood of the piece as a whole is remarkable, often featuring a juxtaposition oftextures relating to the meaning of the text.

UCD Music Society

The UCD Music Society exists to encourage and promote music of all genres across the University.

A major part of the Music Society is the UCD College Choir. It has been in existence since the 1920'sand throughout its existence has had members from all University Faculties, enjoying a particularrelationship with the School of Music. Previous conductors include Professor Anthony Hughes, ProfessorSeoirse Bodley, Grainne Gormley and John White. The choir has performed much of the 'standard' choralrepertoire, including Handel's Messiah, Mozart's Requiem, Dvoraks Mass in D major and thePaukenmesse by Haydn. The choir has also joined forces with the UCD Sinfonia, performing Mozart'sCoronation Mass in 2004 and Faure's Pavane in Dublin's National Concert Hall in 2005.November 2005 saw the choir break from the norm of standard repertoire to perform 'HAMBA LULU' inthe Student Centre at UCD. The concert featured a wide variety of music from Negro Spirituals to Sicilianlove songs.

This year the Music Society has organised three entertainment nights. The first was Classical GuitaristDavid Creevy who played 'Tribute to Andres Segovia' in the Astra Hall UCD in early February. Thesecond a fundraising event to send volunteers to Haiti on voluntary work this summer and raised € 700.The final showdown was a gig at the Forum Bar in Belfield, which featured several bands of differentgenres.

The Music Society and the Choir are always looking for new members. From next September any studentcan take Choir for course credits, so there is even more incentive to join! For more information, pleasee-mail [email protected].
