High Speed CSL
Due to a substantial increase inbusiness at their Hams Hall site nearBirmingham, arvato, one of thelargest 3PL providers in Europe, decided to upgrade its handlingprocess to improve accuracy andefficiency in the flow of picked goods.
CSL’s brief was to combine packedconsignments from two packingareas including special belt conveyorswith over 36 integrated packingstations. All stations were fitted witha PC based WMS system anddespatch labellers, allowing parcelsto be sorted into four despatch zonesfor separate carriers. The conveyorsystem can handle over 60 packagesper minute of varying sizes andweights and a range of packagingtypes from poly bags, jiffy bags andvarious sizes of boxes containingdiverse products, from 60g gauzebags up to a full case of specialistbeer in glass bottles.
To check and sort the wide variety ofpacked orders, the automated
conveyor system uses an array ofnine integrated barcode scanners anda check weigher system to crossreference against actual weightmeasurements before items are fedonto a high speed WMS controlledsortation conveyor system.
The sorter, based on a modular beltdesign, is situated at overhead heightboth to accommodate a fall on thechutes and to allow operatives accessunderneath. It has several lanes ofdespatch chutes each accumulatinga buffer of packages and a “run-out”no-read/pack error chute at the end.
The system also incorporates otherkey features such as Zero LineAccumulation (ZLP) non-contactqueuing roller conveyor prior tomerging both packing lines, state-of-the-art fibre optic sensors, modularplastic topped conveyors on thebends to eliminate as many transferpoints as possible. To read the full article please visit our Case Study sectionon the website website.
Wiggle “Sorted” by CSLCSL have recently been awarded amajor contract to supply aconsiderable pick/pack and sortationconveyor solution for UK based e-tailerWiggle Ltd who are market leaders incycling, swimming and runningequipment and clothing. After a rigorous tender process, CSL’sability to provide a well demonstratedsolution including the latest 3D CADDrawing software to help visualise thesystem as a lifelike representation inthe new building, was key to meetingthe brief and winning the contract.
The brief was to combine packed
consignments from 3 pick/pack areasover 3 floor heights and sort them into4 dispatch zones for separate carriers. The system needs to cope with up to90 boxes per minute of varying sizesand weights from very small parts andclothing up to large boxes of bicyclewheels!
The project consists of zero linepressure (ZLP) accumulation rollerconveyor for speed and non- contactaccumulation, under roller beltconveyor for transit speed andstandard parcel handling conveyor forother areas, as well as 2 x spirallowerators. CSL have integrated 12 xhigh speed switch sorters for thesortation process, together with anintegrated controls system and 3 xstate-of-the-art bar code scanningarrays.
Blooming Successat Morrisons
Wm Morrison Supermarkets plcrecently worked with ConveyorSystems Ltd (CSL) on a project toimprove its efficiency by installing anautomated conveyor system forhandling Morrison’s high quality handcollated and tied bouquets of flowersat their major packing hub in theMidlands.
The project required the handling ofwater filled buckets from automatedwater dosing machines at the start ofthe process through to filled bucketswith completed flower bouquets in astrapped case on the outfeed.
As Morrison’s quite rightly pridethemselves in the quality andfreshness of the flowers on sale attheir stores it was imperative that thebunches were handled with maximumspeed through the system whilst
maintaining the minimum of handlingby packing personnel.
The system comprises of 3 heavy dutymodular slat conveyors integratedside-by-side. Empty buckets are partfilled with water/preserving solutionbefore being automatically fed ontothe 2 outer conveyors so as to beclosest to the packing personnel.Once a bucket is loaded with a fullbouquet, the operator simply slides itfrom either side onto the third, central conveyor.
At the end of line process, the bucketsare transferred either singly or in pairsinto cases, the lids of which are thenbanded shut using Gordian strappersfor easier carrying and avoiding theuse of blades/ damage to the flowers. To read the full article please visit our Case Study sectionon the website website.
