Automotive electronics are increasingly complex with more sensors, controls, and interfaces using higher bandwidth, which requires faster data throughput and more reliable networks.

The different sub-systems in a vehicle need to communicate with one another. The complexity, cost, and weight of wiring harnesses has increased so rapidly that today, wiring is the third most expensive and third heaviest component in a car!

Currently, different manufacturers use their own unique proprietary standards for automotive communication, with each component typically using a dedicated wire or cable. Ethernet has already proven itself as a secure transfer medium that can handle large amounts of data as well as reduce connectivity costs and cabling weight.

BroadR-Reach, developed by Broadcom Corporation, is an Ethernet physical layer standard designed for use in automotive connectivity applications. IEEE standardized the technology with 802.3bw (100Base-T1) expanded to add 802.3bp (1000Base-T1) and now OPEN (One Pair EtherNet) Alliance maintains the automotive Ethernet standards.

The challengeEach sub-system working in the car ecosystem is an important component in automotive communication, involving multilayer design, engineering, and test teams. Ethernet allows each team to understand the communication between all of these subsystems and integrate them into a high-performance network.

The tests and test setup to validate BroadR-Reach, 100Base-T1, and 1000Base-T1 specifications for physical media attachment (PMA), physical layer solutions (PHY), and physical coding sublayer (PCS) are complex and time-consuming. Automotive Ethernet compliance testing consists of a finite set of tests as described by the standards. However, the testing requires 15 different configurations covering up to 10 different pieces of test equipment, wiring harnesses, cables, connectors and, test fixtures in order to comply with all of the required Tx, Rx, and link segment tests. Knowing whether your automotive system passes or fails the required standards compliance tests provides valuable insight and saves you numerous hours of valuable design time.
