NOTING THE GAME

■ What You Should Know…What better way to kick off a new era in Austin Peay hoops than playing early-season

spoiler to one of the big boys right down the road? In its fi rst season opener without Dave Loos since 1990, the Governors will get a stern test early on against one of 2016-17’s deadliest long-range offenses (10th nationally in total 3-point fi eld goals, 14th in 3-pointers per game).

■ Deeper Meanings…WHAT A WIN WOULD MEAN: Would make Figger the fi rst Austin Peay head coach to win in

his debut outing since 1983 (Howard Jackson, vs. Belmont)... would be the Govs fi rst win against an SEC foe since Dec. 10, 2011 (at Tennessee)... would be Austin Peay’s fi rst win against Vander-bilt since 1940... would give the Govs a win in the road opener for the fi rst time since 2010-11 (Saint Louis) and in the regular season opener for the fi rst time since 2013-14 (Oakland City).

WHAT A LOSS WOULD MEAN: Would be the Govs fourth consecutive season-opening loss.

■ Last Time Against VanderbiltDespite it being the beginning of an Ohio Valley Conference Tounament Championship-

winning campaign, the 2015-16 season began auspiciously for Austin Peay, which dropped an 80-41 decision to the Commodores at Memorial Gym to kick off the slate. Khalil Davis led the way with 10 points that night for the Govs, while Zach Glotta made the start and played 12 minutes as the true freshman point guard.

OVC scraps Divisional play after fi ve seasonsAfter using it for fi ve years, divisional play in the OVC has been eliminated with teams going back to being ranked 1-12 in the standings. Also after six years of teams playing 16 Conference games, OVC teams will play an 18-game Conference schedule beginning this season. OVC basketball teams last played an 18-game schedule from 2008-09 through 2010-11. With 11 conference opponents, Austin Peay will now face each conference opponent twice, with the exceptions being Belmont, Eastern Kentucky, Morehead State and Tennessee State. OVC tourney begins eighth season of current format; will make fi rst appearance in EvansvilleThe top eight men’s and women’s teams will qualify for the tournament and advance to play at the host site (as opposed to playing fi rst round games in campus sites) under a merit-based format. On the men’s side the No. 1 and 2 seeds will receive two byes to the semifi nals while the No. 3 and 4 seeds will receive one bye into the quarterfi nals. The fi rst round will include the No. 5 seed against the No. 8 seed and the No. 6 seed against the No. 7 seed. With divisional play eliminated, seeds 1-8 will be merit-based in their entirety. New for 2017-18, the league championship has forgone its longtime home of Nashville and will instead play in Evansville’s Ford Center.

Replay systems for OVC basketball venues enter 10th season; expand to include DVSport On December 21, 2007, the Ohio Valley Conference mandated the use of courtside replay systems at all OVC basketball venues. The initial systems were put into place in January 2008 and were used through the 2016-17 season. However, at the league meetings centered around this season’s basketball media days, it was decreed by the league offi ce that all schools will use DVSport modules for instant replay, standardizing camera angles at every institution across the conference.

GOVERNORS DECREE ■ NEW REGIME: The 2017-18 season

will be a different one for Austin Peay State University men’s basketball. For one thing, it will be the fi rst time in 27 seasons that Dave Loos won’t patrol the sidelines. Following the retirement of the Ohio Valley Conference’s all-time wins leader, Austin Peay athletics direc-tor Ryan Ivey tabbed Matt Figger to lead Austin Peay into a new era of basketball.

■ CHANGES: Figger led a complete pro-gram overhaul during the spring, start-ing with a coaching staff that comprises almost entirely new faces. Rick Cabrera, Dalonte Hill and Sergio Rouco joined the staff as assistants, with Ryan McIntyre slotting into a newly-created Director of Operations position and Anthony Win-chester coming aboard as Director of Player Development. The lone holdover from last season is Hayden McClain, who transitioned from a graduate assistant to special assistant to the Head Coach.

■ DIFFERENT CHANGES: Austin Peay men’s basketball regular-season home-opening contest against Oakland City, originally scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off, Nov. 16, has been moved to Nov. 15 at the same time. This is in conjunction with Austin Peay State University volleyball’s regular-season championship secured thanks to Saturday’s win; the Govs will host the 2017 Ohio Valley Conference Championships in the Dunn Center, Nov. 16-18.

■ GUESS WHO’S BACK: The transition didn’t stop on the sidelines. The Govs re-turn just four players from last season’s roster, with only Chris Porter-Bunton mak-ing more than fi ve starts. The redshirt ju-nior from Bowling Green, along with Zach Glotta, attended the Athletes in Action Captains Academy in Zenia, Ohio over the summer to improve leadership capabili-ties to lead this young squad.

■ FALLING FAST: Both players signed by the Governors during last fall’s early peri-od had exceptional senior campaigns. For Richard Henderson, that included an hon-orable mention McDonald’s All-American honors after averaging 17.2 points and 9.4 rebounds for Pattonville High School, while Bowling Green High School product Terry Taylor led his alma mater to its fi rst state title and was named fi rst-team All-State and Kentucky Sweet 16 MVP.

■ INTERNATIONAL MEN OF MYSTERY:

This Austin Peay squad will feature a dis-tinctly international fl avor. One of Figger’s fi rst additions was Ivan Cucak, a seven-footer from Toronto who spent last season

■ DI DESTINATIONS: A pair of Division I transfers will come in and compete right away for the new-look Governors. Ed Ste-phens, a 1,000-point scorer from South Carolina State, comes over as a gradu-ate transfer who can score the ball and provide leadership in the backcourt. With Grambling State on probation, the NCAA granted Averyl Ugba a waiver to play immediately for the Governors this season; Ugba, an All-SWAC player last season, will provide huge boost for the Govs inside after averaging 13.0 points and a league-best 9.7 rebounds.

FIGGER YEAR-BY-YEAR

MATT FIGGERPosition: Head Coach • Alma Mater: Eastern Kentucky, 1995Experience: First Season • Career Record: 0-0at Austin Peay: First Season • Career Record: 0-0

Thursday, April 6, 2017, Matt Figger was introduced as the 12th head men’s basketball coach in Austin Peay State University history.

Figger came to Austin Peay on the heels of a whirlwind Final Four run as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator under Frank Martin at South Carolina. The Gamecocks were the East Region champion, taking down Marquette, Duke, Baylor and Florida on the way to Phoenix.

After arriving at South Carolina in 2012, Figger assisted Martin in the revival of a program that hadn’t enjoyed a 20-win season since 2008-09, had not advanced to an NCAA Tournament since 2003-04 and had not won an NCAA Tournament game since 1973. After winning 14 games the fi rst two seasons in Columbia, Figger and Co. broke .500 for the fi rst time in 2014-15, fi nishing 17-16, then won 25 games and reached as high as No. 19 in the Associated Press Top-25 poll last season.

In case you somehow missed it, the Gamecocks became NCAA Tournament darlings in March 2017. After bowing out to Alabama in the SEC Tournament quarterfi nals, the seventh-seeded Gamecocks thrashed Marquette, 93-73, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, erased a double-digit lead to score a mighty upset of second-seeded Duke to advance to the Sweet 16 and toppled Baylor 70-50 to advance to the East Region championship game against fellow SEC foe Florida.

Trailing at halftime for the third time during the NCAA Tournament, the Gamecocks shut down the Gators three-point assault in the second half and fed SEC Player of the Year Sindarius Thornwell—a fi nd of Figger’s in his capacity as Martin’s recruiting coordinator—for a game-high 26 points and East Regional Most Outstanding Player honors. The Gamecocks were fi nally knocked out of the tournament by West top seed and top-ranked Gonzaga in the Final Four.

Two players on the Gamecocks Final Four squad got their NBA chance in June 2017--Thornwell, the 48th overall selection in the NBA Draft, with the Los Angeles Clippers via draft night trade with Milwaukee, and PJ Dozier, who inked a free-agent deal with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Figger served on Martin’s staff dating back to 2007, Martin’s fi rst season at Kansas State. In his decade on Martin’s staff, Figger served in a variety of roles, assuming the associate head coach role in 2013-14 upon Brad Underwood’s departure for Stephen F. Austin.

At Kansas State, Figger was on a staff that secured at least 21 wins and fi nished fi fth or better in the Big 12 each season. In his fi rst season on staff, Kansas State won its fi rst NCAA Tournament game since 1988 after posting a 20-win season—just its fourth since 1990. The 2009-10 team won a school-record 29 games and appeared in the programs fi rst Elite Eight in over two decades, defeating six ranked opponents along the way and fi nishing the year ranked seventh in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Top-25 polls.

At both Kansas State and South Carolina, Figger served as recruiting coordinator. He inked two McDonald’s All-Americans at Kansas State, including Michael Beasley, who would earn National Freshman and Player of the Year in 2008 before becoming a fi rst-round pick in the NBA Draft. Beasley was one of four All-Americans—along with Denis Clemente, Jacob Pullen and Bill Walker—tutored by Figger at Kansas State.

Figger’s fi rst Division I coaching experience came with John Pelphrey at South Alabama, helping lead the Jaguars to a Sun Belt Tournament title in 2006 and a regular-season championship in 2007. After building through recruiting the fi rst three years under Pelphrey, the Jaguars broke through in 2006 with 24 wins, a 14-game improvement that was the biggest turnaround in the NCAA that season. Figger helpd the Jaguars advance to their fi rst NCAA Tournament since 1998, where the bowed out to eventual national champion Florida in the fi rst round.

Figger joined Pelphrey for three months at Arkansas in 2007 as director of operations before signing on at Kansas State as an assistant coach.

In his Division I stops at South Carolina, Kansas State and South Alabama, Figger made three NIT and six NCAA Tournament appearances, including two Sweet 16 and two Elite Eight appearances, in addition to the 2017 Final Four.

Figger earned his coaching stripes in the junior college ranks, breaking into coaching at Wabash Valley Community College in 1993-94, helping lead the Warriors to a 29-3 record, before heading to Vincennes (Ind.) College for fi ve seasons, where he coached Clarksville native and future NBA All-Star Shawn Marion for two seasons, as well as future NBA player Tyrone Nesby. The Trailblazers went 132-39 during Figger’s time on NJCAA Hall of Famer Dan Sparks’ staff, advancing to three NJCAA National Tournaments and capturing four straight Region XII titles (1995-98); the 1998 Vincennes squad went 31-5 and fi nished fi fth at the national tournament.

He capped his junior college coaching career with a three-year stop at Odessa College, helping the Wranglers to a 27-7 mark and NJCAA National appearance in 2001.

In all, Figger advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament four times. He coached fi ve NJCAA All-Americans—Marion, Mitchell Dunn, DeShay Jones, Tarone Barker and Janavor Weatherspoon—and had 35 players sign Division I scholarships.

EXHIBITION RECAP

CLARKSVILLE—Behind a standout fi rst ap-pearance in an Austin Peay uniform from freshman Terry Taylor, Austin Peay State Uni-versity men’s basketball delivered a solid 95-78 win against Sewanee in exhibition action, Saturday night, in the Dunn Center.Taylor was electric in his fi rst contest as a

Gov, hitting all nine shot attempts from the fl oor. The wing from Bowling Green scored 24 points and snatched 12 rebounds, pac-ing an aggressive Austin Peay offensive at-tack.Defensively, the Governors swarmed the

ball, forcing 23 Sewanee turnovers. With an up-tempo attack predicated on ball-pres-sure, the Governors repeatedly hounded Se-wanee’s guards into mistakes. Taylor, junior Zach Glotta and junior Chris Porter-Bunton each collected multiple steals for the Govs.Glotta contributed to blowing the game

wide open in the fi rst half. At the 9:25 mark, he answered a Luke Smith three with a three of his own to push the Austin Peay lead back to eight. On the next possession, following a Taylor steal, he found Averyl Ugba for a layup, then followed that with a pair of free-throws of his own. With 7:36 left, he found Deyshawn Martin wide-open for a three, pushing the Austin Peay lead to 13 points—it would not dip below double fi gures for the rest of the night.
