Pain Management Class with Claudia Welch Tuesday, August 8 • 11am - 12pmTo promote a holistic approach to pain with discussions on different topics each month ranging from the benefits of gentle exercise, helpful tips to recognize priorities; supporting alternative as well as complementary treatments. This month, Part One in Taking an Active Role in Managing Your Pain, attendees will learn to make a plan, anticipate bumps, and be equipped with tools that can help you do this! Claudia Welch has been a facilitator for the American Chronic Pain Association since 2009.
Melt Method with Nancy Starr Tuesday, August 15 • 11:30am - 12:45pmThe Melt Method is a self-help technique (using small balls on the hands and feet) designed to balance the nervous system and rehydrate the connective tissue. The class is taught by Nancy Starr, a massage therapist for the past 11 years and Melt instructor for the past 3 years.
TAT Tapas Acupressure Technique Thursday, August 24 • 11am - 1pmCorina Gheorghiu, DDS, LMFT will guide you in a series of holding acupressure points that connect all physical, mental, emotional and spiritual parts to enable you to open blockages and release healing, peace, and energy. TAT has been used successfully to end fears and phobias, lessen stress and heal emotional origins of physical disease. Corina Gheorgiu, DDS is also a Marriage Family Therapist and a Sleep and Well-Being coach.
Ikebana Flower Arranging with Valeria Brinkers Saturday, Aug 5 • 10:30am – 12:00pmIkebana is a Japanese word often translated to English as “giving life to flowers” or “Living Flowers”. It represents our desire to bring out the inner beauty of the flowers themselves. Attendees will learn to express themselves with the therapeutic art of beautifully arranging cut stems, leaves, and flowers in vases. In this class, students will create a Summer flower arrangement. Valeria will provide all materials (flowers, vases, etc.). Limited to 20 students. Register by Wednesday, August 2nd.
Thyroid Cancer with Benjamin Rafii, MD Saturday, August 5 • 10am - 12pmDr. Benjamin Rafii will present an overview of thyroid cancer, with a special focus on the latest treatment guidelines from the American Thyroid Association. Q & A to follow. Dr. Benjamin Rafii is Board Certified Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon who also specializes in surgery for both benign and malignant diseases of the thyroid gland. Dr. Rafii received his undergraduate degree at UCLA and his M.D. at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Kids Community: Kathy's Critters Saturday, August 5 • 1pm - 3pmEnrich your knowledge of science with a hands-on experience learning about reptiles, amphibians, arthropods and other misunderstood, but friendly critters. Critters include snakes, lizards, salamanders, newts, frogs, toads, Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, scorpions and tarantulas. Learn about where they are from, what they eat and their role in the environment. Everyone will get to touch, hold or pet most of the animals.
Lunch Discussion: Memory Boot Camp - Cognitive Fitness for the Brain with David Hart, Ph.D. Friday, Aug 11 • 1:00pm - 2:30pmScientific research has determined that chemo brain and healthy aging brain can continue to renew itself through the adoption of specific cognitive strategies, including the engagement of novel activities that stimulate neurogenesis and synaptic connections. Memory Boot Camp is a cognitive fitness regimen that intends to make you sweat – your brain that is. Attendees can expect to exercise multiple regions of the cerebral cortex for a full brain workout. Dr. David Hart is Director of Clinical Services at Always Best Care Senior Services L.A. – South Bay, and a faculty member in the Dept. of Counseling at California State University, Fullerton. 12:30 – 1:00pm Lunch and Social Time. Laughter Chair Yoga with Tickled Pink Janis Lukstein Saturday, Aug 19 • 10am - 11amLearn to laugh and reflect while doing simple exercises to help the healing, health process for patients, family, and friends. Janis is a certified Laughter Yoga Leader from www.laughteryogaamerica.com who will share some of the history of this movement making time to stay well. Observers are welcome.
Lunch Discussion: The Happiness Advantage: Contentment & Vitality from the Outside In with David Hart Ph.D. Friday, August 25 • 1:00pm - 2:30pmHave you ever wondered what makes happy people, happy? Is it part of an individual’s fixed personality or an intentional choice to maintain a cheerful disposition? This workshop will explore the empirical research on how living purposefully, practicing gratitude, giving back, and engaging in specific positive behaviors not only improves happiness, but may also increase longevity across the lifespan. Cancer Support Community Redondo Beach offers free short-term counseling to Community members, to couples and family members. Joining a weekly support group is also strongly encouraged.

This transitional support group is for teens who are grieving the loss of a parent, grandparent, sibling or any other fam-ily member with cancer.
