September 1, 2019 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The Black and Indian Mission Collection has changed the landscape of evangelization and education efforts for Native Americans, Alaskan Americans and African Americans throughout the United States. Your financial contribution to this fund assists clergy, religious and lay catechists, parishes, schools and catechetical centers for the evangelization of the Black and Native American peoples throughout our country. As we embark on another year of evangelization in the Black Catholic, Native American and Alaskan Native communities, everyone is encouraged to make a difference by offering their prayers for the fruitful support of the missions in the United States and to consider expressing concretely their Christian solidarity through sacrificial offerings. Your support impacts the daily pastoral work of our bishops, consecrated religious women and men, and lay-leadership who labor on Indian reservations, urban centers, Black Catholic and Alaskan Native parishes, mission schools and the many, many diocesan programs and projects that strengthen the work of the Gospel. Locally, through grants awarded from this collection, a number of parishes within the Archdiocese are able to fund pastoral outreach and evangelization programs. It is only through your continued generosity of this collection that such efforts are realized. The Collection for the Black and Indian Missions will be held in parishes of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia on the weekend of September 7 and 8, 2019. USCCB NOTIFICATION RE: AUGUSTINE ALILONU – The Diocese of Fargo has advised the Conference of
its concerns regarding Augustine Alilonu. Mr. Alilonu is a former priest of the Diocese who was dismissed from the clerical state on May 16, 2019 based upon his persistent disobedience to legitimate ecclesiastical authority. The Diocese also relates that Mr. Alilonu has been implicated in several instances of financial malfeasance. Those needing further information should contact Most Rev. ☀ SUMMER ASSISTANCE ☀ Throughout the year and especially during the summer months, the Office for Clergy receives requests for Mass coverage from pastors. A number of retired priests have been able to offer assistance for varying periods of time, and this has been extremely helpful, particularly in parishes where there is only one priest assigned. The Office for Clergy is grateful to all those retired priests who currently offer ongoing or occasional assistance to parishes or who have assisted in the past. Your generosity is a tremendous support to our brother priests. If you are not currently assisting in a parish and would like to make yourself available, either during the summer months or on an occasional basis throughout the year, the Office for Clergy would be happy to identify parishes where you could be of assistance. There are many parishes that would benefit from the assistance of a retired priest and your consideration of this need is greatly appreciated. If any priest can assist in a parish this summer, please contact the Office for Clergy at 215-587-4532 to advise us of dates you would be available. Pastors who anticipate difficulty in arranging coverage are also invited to contact the Office for Clergy.

🚗🚗 PRIESTS WHO ARE 75 YEARS OF AGE AND OLDER 📝📝 AUTO INSURANCE REQUIREMENT - Effective since July 1, 2016, within 90 days of a priest reaching the age of 75 and annually thereafter, you must provide a doctor’s note confirming continued fitness to drive. The note need only to state that you can drive or cannot drive; no medical details are required. If you have not already done so, kindly visit your doctor to obtain the required documentation and submit to the Office for Clergy. 💰💰2019 STANDARD MILEAGE RATES FOR BUSINESS - Beginning on January 1, 2019, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) was raised: 58.5 cents per mile for business miles driven, up from 54.5 cents in 2018. The Archdiocesan Financial Year started July 1, 2019 and ends June 31, 2020. ☛⚰ PRIESTS PERSONAL PLANNING RECORD – If you, or someone you know has ever had to make funeral arrangements for someone, you can understand how having accurate information for contacting their beneficiary and/or executor, as well as any information on pre-arrangements or other wishes, greatly facilitates in the process going smoothly. Now is an opportune time to update (especially if it’s been more than five years since your last update), OR fill out for the first time, your Priests Personal Planning Record for your Personnel File. The form is available on-line in the Priests’ Portal or by calling or e-mailing the Clergy Office. Your considerate cooperation with this request is most sincerely appreciated. ►📝📝 UPDATE YOUR DESIGNATED BENEFICIARY - The PRIESTS’ GROUP LIFE INSURANCE BENEFIT is intended to pay for funeral and burial expenses. Unless your burial expenses have already been arranged, the Executor of your Estate should be listed as the primary beneficiary and the benefit designated for your funeral and burial expenses. It is important to have an up-to-date Beneficiary Enrollment/Change Form on file to ensure a smooth claim process when the
time comes. The most current signed and dated beneficiary form from each priest will be the prevailing document by CIGNA when the claim for Life Insurance benefits is submitted. The life insurance benefit is not taxable to a named (and living) beneficiary; however, if there is no living beneficiary, the life insurance benefit must be paid to your estate and may be subject to probate tax. For a Beneficiary Enrollment/Change Form,
questions or inquiries about this benefit, contact the Office for Insurance Services through their Call Center at 1-877-852-5246, where their customer service staff is prepared to assist you. MEET OUR NEW DEACONS On Saturday, June 8, 2019, Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M., Cap., ordained seven new permanent deacons. Here is a short bio of each of our new brothers. Melvin Burton, Jr. is a member of St. Martin de Porres Parish in Philadelphia. He lives with his wife Monica, and have three children, Melvin 3rd, Sherice and grandchild Sariyah. Melvin is currently a department manager at Acme Markets. He is assigned to Saint Martin de Porres Parish, Philadelphia. Michael J. Cipressi is a member of St. Philip Neri Parish in Lafayette Hill where he resides with his wife Catherine. They have two children, Grace and Nora. Michael holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from St. Joseph’s University and a master’s degree in social work from Columbia University. He is self-employed as a clinical social worker. He is assigned to Saint Philip Neri Parish, Lafayette Hill. Matthew D. Coyne is a member of St. Joseph Parish in Downingtown. He and his wife Lisa have seven children, Brendan, Brittany, Francesca, Caelan, Arianna, Alana and Kiernan. He has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Vermont. He is a merger and acquisition advisor at Brandywine Mergers & Acquisitions, LLC. He is assigned to Saint Joseph Parish, Downingtown. William J. Griffin is a member of St. Anselm Parish in Philadelphia where he resides with his wife Kristin and two children, William and Estella. He received his degree in environmental management and technology at Rochester Institute of Technology. He is employed at ZVRS as an account manager. He is assigned to the Office for Persons with Disabilities/Deaf Apostolate. Christopher J. Hilden is a member of St. Anastasia Parish in Newtown Square where he resides with his wife Karen and their four children, Thomas, Jonathan, Joshua and Amanda. He attended Penn State Erie where he received his bachelor’s degree in management information systems and has a master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts. He is employed as a systems analyst at Wawa Inc. He is assigned to Saint Anastasia Parish, Newtown Square. Steven M. Javie is a member of St. Andrew Parish in Newtown where he resides with his wife Mary-ellen. Steven graduated from Temple University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He has retired as a referee from the National Basketball Association and now works part time as a referee analyst for ESPN/ABC during NBA telecasts. He is assigned to Saint Andrew Parish, Newtown.

Gary D. Schoenenberger is a member of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish in Hilltown where he resides with his wife, Patricia. They have one child, Marie Forney. He holds a Bachelor of Technology degree in electrical engineering from the University of Dayton. He is employed as an IT engineer at Haverford College. He is assigned to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Hilltown. ANNOUNCEMENTS
HELPING THE PINK SISTERS - The Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters ("Pink Sisters") located at 2212 Green St., Philadelphia, are in need of assistance with Evening Prayer and Benediction. For the last several years, five of our deacons have assisted at various times, as the presider/celebrant for Evening Vespers and benediction. Some of
the deacons who have assisted are no longer able to do so, and more help is needed. We are looking for at least five deacons who can help serve the sisters in the celebration of Evening prayers (sung by the sisters) and Benediction. Vespers and Benediction are held every day at 5PM in the chapel. So far, one deacon has volunteered, and training will take place this summer. If any deacon would be interested in helping on a fixed schedule (1 or 2 days per week, or even once per month), please contact Deacon Michael Pascarella by e-mail ([email protected]). FBI AND PA CHILD ABUSE CLEARANCE RENEWALS - All members of the clergy are required to have a new FBI fingerprint records check and a PA Child Abuse Clearance every five years. Three months prior to the expiration of your current clearances, you will be notified by the Office for Clergy with instructions as to how to go about obtaining these documents. Once received, copies should be sent to the Office for Clergy. ANNUAL ONGOING FORMATION AND RETREAT RECORD FORM - The Annual Ongoing Formation and Retreat Record Form for 2019 has been revised and was distributed via email with the last issue of the Clergy Notes. A section has been added to capture work done annually in specific ministries, both paid and unpaid. This information is being requested by the USCCB’s research division for statistical purposes. FOCCUS FACILITATORS - Any deacon interested in becoming a FOCCUS facilitator and assisting the Office of Life and Family with their marriage preparation program, please contact Deacon Patrick Kennedy at [email protected]. SPIRITUAL DIRECTION - Please contact the Office for Clergy for more information about finding an approved spiritual director. REMINDER ABOUT THE DEATH OF A DEACON OR A DEACON’S WIFE - In the event of the death of a deacon or spouse, families should notify the Office for Clergy as soon as possible, and before final funeral arrangements are made. As the funeral of a deacon is an Archdiocesan event, the music selection needs to be reviewed by the Office for Divine Worship. This should be done by having the parish music director contact the Office for Divine Worship directly. Also, when possible, the Archbishop would prefer to be the principal celebrant at the funeral of a deacon or spouse of a deacon. In his absence, an auxiliary bishop may be the principal celebrant, based on availability. Any questions should be directed to Deacon Michael Pascarella at [email protected]. THE PRAYER TO SAINT MICHAEL, THE ARCHANGEL
Many parishes and institutions within the Archdiocese have responded positively to
pray the prayer to Saint Michael in conjunction with the celebration of Mass. You are
reminded that this devotional prayer is to take place outside of Mass. It is not to be
prayed as the concluding prayer of the Universal Prayer nor as part of the Communion
Rite.
THE TIME FOR VIGIL MASSES AND ANTICIPATED MASSES
The time for Vigil Masses and Anticipated Masses in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is
no earlier than 4:00 PM. This applies to Holy Days of Obligation as well, including
Christmas.

THE MASS SCHEDULE FOR HOLY DAYS WHEN THE OBLIGATION IS
SUSPENDED
In the United States, there are three Holy Days, Solemnities, when the obligation to
participate in Mass is suspended when the observance falls on a Monday or a
Saturday—the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God (January 1), the Solemnity of
the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (August 15), and the Solemnity of All Saints
(November 1). In these instances, the Mass schedule certainly can be modified.
However, there should at least be the celebration of one Mass for the benefit of the
faithful who desire to attend Mass.

MASS FOR THE OPENING OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR
A votive Mass of the Holy Spirit may be scheduled for the opening of the academic year on
weekdays when there is no liturgical impediment. The Roman Missal provides three options for
this Votive Mass. One of the prefaces of the Holy Spirit is used and red vestments are worn.
The Lectionary texts for the day are preferable.
Also, see the options in the Book of Blessings, Chapter 5: Order for the Blessing of Students and
Teachers, for another way to liturgically celebrate the opening of the academic year.

CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS
The Office for Divine Worship has the responsibility for direction, guidance and support of
pastors and those who collaborate with them in the formation of adults for Christian Initiation.
Additional information on Christian Initiation for adults can be found on the website for the
Office for Divine Worship, under the heading Christian Initiation.
Full Initiation—Baptism, Confirmation and the first reception of Communion—apart from
the Easter Vigil, outside the immediate danger of death, requires the permission of the
Archbishop (see RCIA, no. 331). Archbishop Chaput delegates the Office for Divine Worship
to give this permission. Please contact the Office for Divine Worship for such circumstances.

EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION
All Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are to have an appointment letter
from the Archbishop.
Candidates are to be fully initiated practicing Catholics, high school graduates, validly
married (if married), recognized for faith and devotion to the Holy Eucharist as well as
for service in the parish/institution.

Pastors and chaplains are encouraged to send new Extraordinary Ministers of Holy
Communion to the archdiocesan formation sessions. Current Extraordinary Ministers
of Holy Communion are also welcome to attend.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion typically serve for three years.
Pastors/chaplains may renew terms, if agreeable and in consultation with the minister.
Pastors and chaplains are reminded to inform the Office for Divine Worship if they
conduct their own formation and to send to this office their request for new
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.
Request forms can be found on the Office for Divine Worship website. Letters of
Appointment from the Archbishop will then follow.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are appointed for a three-year term and
for the place where they are commissioned. Terms may be renewed if agreeable to both
the pastor/chaplain and the minister.
All records of active Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are maintained by
the parish/institution.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are commissioned after participation in
a training session, according to the form found in the Book of Blessings, Chapter 63,
“Order for the Commissioning of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.”
• Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion only serve in the parishes/institutions for
which they are commissioned.
PROTOCOL
ON THE OCCASION OF THE DESECRATION
OF THE MOST BLESSED SACRAMENT
The norms for the proper celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the reception of the
Body and Blood of the Lord, the exposition and the reservation of the Most Blessed Sacrament
are to be carefully and consistently observed, with the vigilant oversight of the Pastor and/or
chaplain, in all churches and oratories within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. These norms
are principally found in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, Norms for the Distribution
and Reception of Holy Communion under Both Kinds in the Dioceses of the United States of America,
the ritual book, Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharist Outside Mass and the Code of Canon
Law.
When the desecration of the Most Blessed Sacrament occurs during the celebration of
Mass, with the reception of Holy Communion, during simple or solemn exposition of the Most
Blessed Sacrament and/or to the reserved Most Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle, the
following protocol is to be observed:

1. The Regional Bishop and/or the Dean should be informed immediately by the pastor or
chaplain of the church or oratory. The Regional Bishop and/or Dean then informs the
Archbishop immediately.
2. The Pastor or chaplain contacts the Office for Divine Worship for a suitable form of
reparation for the desecration to be carried out by the pastor or chaplain.
3. A record is kept of the desecration and the reparation in the Chancery.

On Saturday, November 2, 2019 the Liturgical Music Ministry wishes to remember and pray for
our deceased loved ones with Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem, to be sung as part of the
Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
In order to share the healing beauty of this masterwork for chorus and orchestra, we are looking
for Angels to help financially support the music for this Mass.
Those who participate will be invited to place in the worship booklet the names of their deceased loved
one(s).

For me, the idea that I stand in the place of Jesus in my life, in my encounters with my family, my friends, and my little daughter has been revolutionary. Until now, I’ve thought that I was not worthy to untie Jesus’ sandals. Now it seems I am to put them on and walk as though they fit.
The workshop clearly called out that all baptized people have been given the power, authority, and jurisdiction to stand in Jesus’ place to reach people who would not otherwise be reached.

July 15, 2019 Dear Father/Monsignor, Greetings in Christ! Over the past few years, the Catholic Leadership Institute has been conducting the Disciple Maker Index survey in a number of our parishes here in the Archdiocese. The purpose of the survey is to provide parishes with concrete information about the spiritual state of their parishioners and how well the parish is doing in helping people to grow more deeply into life in Christ. As of 2019, we have survey responses from over 17,000 Archdiocesan Catholics. In analyzing the data, a major problem has come to light about our relationship to the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. Among the survey respondents - who are our most active and engaged Catholics - 75% of them report that they go to Confession “once or twice a year” or “never.” This indicates that sacramental confession is in a dire state in our local Church. I would like to try to help with this problem since it has critical implications for discipleship and evangelization. I have created a short 15-minute video presenting the data, explaining its seriousness and proposing some responses. The video can be found at the website below. While there are numerous things that we need to do to address this problem, one very simple thing we can do is think about changing the time that we offer Confessions to a time that makes it more accessible to more people. I have heard from vibrant and engaged local Catholics that the Saturday evening time slot for Confession makes it difficult for them to get there with frequency. To find out when is the best time to offer Confession, I have created a short survey that local Catholics can use to tell us what time would help them get there more often. Through this survey I hope to gather solid data to make available to you so that you have some information to work with when considering a change along these lines. Our Lady of Confidence Christian Retreat for Persons with Disabilities: A three day retreat at Malvern Retreat House has been scheduled for October 8, 9 & 10, 2019 for adults with disabilities. The retreat is geared for adults with intellectual, physical or emotional disabilities. The retreat directors are Fr. Jim McGuinn and Fr. Mike Speziale and the theme is: We All Belong. Lily’s Gift, is a network of concerned parents and professionals who have experienced or worked closely with issues surrounding poor prenatal diagnosis. A collaboration of the Office for Persons with Disabilities, Catholic Social Services and the Office of Life and Family, this service can provide a peer support team to assist couples during this critical time. Nourish for Caregivers Workshop. This workshop on Saturday, November 2nd from 9 am to noon will be at the Archdiocesan Pastoral Center. BRIEF HISTORY
Our Lady of Confidence Retreat Group
made their first retreat in 1964 at Malvern
Retreat House in Malvern, PA. The retreat
has been held every year since then.
MISSION STATEMENT
To conduct an annual three day, two night
Christian Retreat that will give men and
woman the opportunity to discover, renew
or increase their faith in our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ through the intercession of his
Blessed Mother ‘Our Lady of Confidence.’
The goal is to provide a meaningful retreat
experience for adults with disabilities. This
retreat is geared for adults with intellectual,
physical, emotional, social or economic disa-
bilities. Various religious, spiritual, and social
activities will be conducted in a serene envi-
ronment within comfortable, accessible facili-
ties.
Friends will be available to assist and monitor
physical needs and accommodations. At least
one, usually two or three, Registered Nurses
will be on site throughout the entire retreat.
Located on 125 acres of
wooded countryside, the
Malvern Retreat House is a
Catholic retreat center for
men, women, families, mar-
ried couples, religious and clergy. It is also a
place where Christian people strengthen and
renew their relationship with Jesus Christ,
self and others.
COST
The Laymen’s Retreat League has supported
Our Lady of Confidence (OLC) Retreat by
granting a substantial subsidy. An anonymous
free will donation is requested during the re-
treat. Any other contribution for the OLC Re-
treat will be sincerely appreciated. No one is,
or ever has been, denied the opportunity to at-
tend due to an inability to contribute financially.

Ethical Care of Infants with a Life-Limiting Prenatal DiagnosisBased on Catholic Teaching
One of the most difficult challenges for parents experiencing a prenatal diagnosis is
the often-traumatizing attachment of lethal language to the baby alive in the womb. Parents
should understand that phrases such as “fatal fetal anomaly,” “lethal or terminal prenatal
diagnosis,” and “incompatible with life” are not clinical terms. More often than not, medical researchers and ethicists suggest these labels often reflect the judgment that a life lived
with a significant disability is not worth living. At diagnosis, lethal language may be used to
encourage the uptake of abortion. Once lethality is attached to a baby, it may also serve to
steer the parents who do not abort into limiting their medical options during the pregnancy,
and at labor and delivery, and to make decisions before birth regarding the care of their
child.
It is important that parents have the best, most medically accurate information to make informed decisions for their unborn child with a prenatal diagnosis. Fatal terminology conveys a false impression that a prognosis can be made with certainty prenatally. Not only is that untrue, but studies have found
that when offered the same medical care as other babies at birth, newborns with disabilities like Trisomy 13 and 18 exceed previously assumed lifespans and outcomes. “Life limiting” is a better term that more honestly states what can be known about babies with certain prenatal diagnoses before birth.
Prenatal referrals for palliative care and/or perinatal hospice care with the mindset of limiting medical options for a newborn at birth should not be made unless it is known with moral certainty that the prenatal diagnosis is (1) accurate, and (2) that it will directly cause perinatal death with or without life-sustaining treatment and care routinely offered to newborns. The primary reason for this is that medical decisions, which are moral decisions, must be made with all available knowledge.
In the majority of cases, the most accurate information regarding the diagnosis, prognosis, and possible treatment options for a baby with a prenatal diagnosis can only be gained with a full medical evaluation of the child by appropriate medical specialists after he/she is born. Parents, who are charged with acting in their child’s best interests, have both the right and the duty to gain such information in order to make medically informed and ethically appropriate decisions concerning their child’s medical care.
The evaluation of the living newborn is so important that efforts should be made to stabilize the child at birth, including intubation when necessary, unless the intubation itself is burdensome because an airway is abnormal and tube placement is excessively difficult. In some cases, medical providers may suggest that parents may determine that intubation is unnecessarily burdensome if it appears probable that an infant’s prognosis reduces the likelihood of future extubation, as may be the case if an infant has anencephaly. Even in such cases, parents should make the decision.
It should be noted that parents have the right to choose to forgo extraordinary treatment, but medical care which is basic is morally obligatory. An infant should not be denied basic care and proportionately beneficial life sustaining treatments whose administration does not create an undue burden to the child. No infant should be allowed to die as a result of lack of nutrition and hydration or other basic care, such as the bandaging of exposed brain or organs, treatments like antibiotics, or other ordinary measures, unless the benefits of any such measures are outweighed by the burdens, risks, or side effects from their administration. “Comfort care” protocols should meet this standard as well.
In addition, the assertion that feeding should be withdrawn because its administration creates disproportionate burdens to the baby should only be made following an appropriate medical evaluation. The typical infant who vomits following a feeding isn't then routinely denied any additional feedings.
To this extent, the living baby with a prenatal diagnosis (i.e., a significant disability) should be treated like any other infant. The rights of parents to provide for the basic needs of their child with a disability should be respected. Medical conditions that impact feeding should be discussed fully with parents, and all remaining options for the provision of hydration and nutrition should be explained to them.
Lethal language and the corresponding judgment against life-limiting conditions which may be characterized as uniformly "lethal" by medical providers can impact the care of an infant in NICU. Medical providers may decide that the provision of supportive measures is futile in spite of the wishes of parents. The placement of formal DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) orders in an infant's chart without parental consent violates the patient-doctor relationship in which the parent is presumed to speak on behalf of their child. A physician-initiated DNR denies parents informed consent and autonomy in decision-making regarding the care of their baby, and may violate the parents' religious beliefs. It is also possible that an unofficial or verbal DNR order, or not acting quickly if an infant is in crisis constitutes what some would term a "slow code." This is another means by which a medical team may disregard parental rights.
Relative to securing life-sustaining or restorative treatment, an understanding of the pediatric concurrent care provisions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) may also be helpful for parents in advocating for their child. The ACA requires that all state Medicaid programs pay not only for hospice services for children under the age of 21 who qualify, but also for treatment and care which is curative, and therefore related to treatment of the child’s condition. Section 2302 of the ACA provides a new standard of care wherein parents who accept pediatric hospice services can also pursue surgeries and other therapies for their child.

must be postmarked and/or received no later than September 10, 2019. Each entry [drawing] MUST have the following information printed on the back: Your Name,

Use tape to secure your form to the back of artwork. Do not fold artwork. Artwork that does not conform to the guidelines will be disqualified. All entries become the property of the Pontifical Mission Societies, which reserves the right to
depict all or part of the selected illustrations. It is not possible for the Pontifical Mission Societies office to offer any compensation for entries or to return them, whether or not they are used.

Bishop Sam Jacobs was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Lafayette in 1964 where he served as pas-
tor, chaplain, and associate pastor of several parishes there and also in the Diocese of Lake Charles. He has served as chairman of the National Service Committee for the Charismatic Renewal and diocesan director of Vocations and Seminarians for the Diocese of Lake Charles. Bishop Jacobs was appointed the tenth bishop of Alexandria in 1989 and was installed as the third bishop of Houma-Thibodaux in 2003. He retired in October of 2013 and is now the bishop emeritus of Houma-Thibodaux. He celebrated 50 years of priesthood on June
6, 2014, and marked 25 years of episcopacy on August 24, 2014.
Maria Vadia was baptized in the Holy Spirit in 1987 and consecrated her life to the Lord Jesus Christ and to the preaching of
the Gospel. In spite of great adversity, the Lord has been with her like a “Mighty Warrior” (Jeremiah 20:11) Active in the Catholic Charis-matic Renewal of the Archdiocese of Miami, Maria has spoken at many conferences and has traveled extensively around the world to nu-
merous nations bringing a message of faith, salvation and healing.
As Founder of The Glory of God Foundation, Maria is committed to making Jesus known to the nations by the preaching of the Gospel in the power of the Holy Spirit. It is her desire to see the Catholic Church restored to the beauty of the Bride of Christ with miracles, signs, and wonders. Maria and her team, have been helping God’s people enter into deeper worship and experience the Glory of God. Together with Fr. Tom di Lorenzo she sponsors the School of the Holy Spirit and Days of Glory conference. Robert J. Valiante has been married to Sue Valiante for fifty-six years; they are parents of one child, Maria. The
Valiantes live in Moosic, Penna. Bob has been involved in the Charismatic Renewal of the Catholic Church for forty-seven years. In that time, he has served in various capacities. He is a past coordinator of the Service Team for the Catholic Charismatic Renewal of the Diocese of Scranton, a founder and former coordinator of the annual Catholic Charismatic Conference of the Diocese of Scranton, which is in its thirty seventh year. Bob served as Pastoral Associate in his parish for seven years. A frequent speaker at days of renewal, conferences, retreats, parish missions, and regional gatherings; Bob shares his gift of exhortation. He is the Liaison to the Bishop and Coordinator of the Charis-matic Renewal for the Diocese of Scranton, and a former member of the Service Committee of the Association of Diocesan Liaisons.

ABOUT REMAIN IN MY LOVEIn 2017, Archbishop Charles J. Chaput announced a three year project, Remain in My Love, directed to every member of the clergy and lay faithful, to every parish and institution and to the families of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Its goal is to reinvigorate our understanding, practices and celebrations of Christian marriage and family life.
Year 1 (2017) was addressed to the Archdiocesan Pastoral Center and Year 2 (2018) was for parish staffs. This third and final year (2019) brings the Church’s good news about marriage and family life to all of the people of the Archdiocese. The three key topics of Years 1 and 2 will be presented in a mini-conference format and are open to everyone. The conference will immerse all of us in the splendor of Christ’s teachings about marriage and family and provide a way for married couples and families to meet and support one another. There is no more urgent time than now to bring marriage and family to new life and to work to protect this most precious institution created by God.
The 2019 Remain in My Love Mini-Conference will take place on Sunday, September 15. Families are encouraged to “make a day of it”, attending Mass at the Cathedral, perhaps going out to eat together and then attending the event. All are asked to register for the conference at archphila.org/remain2019.
The Plenary Sessions will include: • Keynote addresses by three national Catholic speakers• A personal witness from a married couple• Discussion, Q & A and a call to action on the topic • Childcare and free parking will be available.
NOTE FOR PARISH STAFFMany parishes of the Archdiocese participated in Year 2 of the Remain in My Love initiative. If for some reason your parish was not able to do so, you can do so this year by following the Guidebook for Parish Staff, which can be found on the website, archphila.org/remain2019.
Pastors and Parish Staffs that did participate in Year 2 are invited to share observations, suggestions and plans from the parish discussions to strengthen married life and the family. These comments will be published for the benefit of everyone on the Remain in My Love website and will also aid the presenters throughout 2019. Pastors are asked to forward these comments to Donna Huddell at [email protected].
