LITURGICAL and CIVIC CALENDAR ITEMS

THE PRAYER TO SAINT MICHAEL, THE ARCHANGEL

Many parishes and institutions within the Archdiocese have responded positively to

pray the prayer to Saint Michael in conjunction with the celebration of Mass. You are

reminded that this devotional prayer is to take place outside of Mass. It is not to be

prayed as the concluding prayer of the Universal Prayer nor as part of the Communion

Rite.

THE TIME FOR VIGIL MASSES AND ANTICIPATED MASSES

The time for Vigil Masses and Anticipated Masses in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is

no earlier than 4:00 PM. This applies to Holy Days of Obligation as well, including

Christmas.

ORDINATIONS AT THE CATHEDRAL BASILICA OF SAINTS PETER AND PAUL

The Ordination of Deacons (transitional and permanent) will take place on Saturday, June 13,

2020. The Ordination of Priests will take place on Saturday, June 20, 2020. Please include an

intention in the Universal Prayer on the Sundays before each Ordination for those to receive

the Sacrament of Holy Orders.

MEMORIAL OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, MOTHER OF THE CHURCH

Monday, June 1, 2020

The USCCB Secretariat for Divine Worship has posted information about the readings and

orations for this Mass. It also provides information about the celebration of the Liturgy of the

Hours on this recently established liturgical Memorial. See the website:

http://www.usccb.org/about/divine-worship/liturgical-calendar/mother-of-the-church.cfm

This new Memorial supersedes the rubric at the end of the Pentecost Mass that suggests that a

Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit may be celebrated on the Monday after Pentecost.

Please note that the readings are proper to the day, not optional. They are slightly different

than what is in the Lectionary for Mass (Lectionary Number 1002-I). The Secretariat has

produced a PDF of the readings which may be found at the above link.

THE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

Sunday, June 14, 2020

Even with the COVID-19 precautions in place at this time, a more solemn celebration of Mass

on this Sunday is a most fitting way to observe this Solemnity. Liturgical exposition and a

procession with the Most Blessed Sacrament follow the norms found in the ritual book, Holy

Page 5: JUNE PRIESTS’ MAILING FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE OF … · Joseph University, Rosemont College, and Cabrini College. (Villanova University’s Church, which serves as both the university

3

Communion and Worship of the Eucharist Outside of Mass. It is also possible to have exposition

and a procession with the Most Blessed Sacrament on a day near to the Solemnity, in

anticipation or to recall its observance.

TWELTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AND FATHER’S DAY

Sunday, June 21, 2020

The American observance of Father’s Day on this day should in no way detract from this

Sunday’s celebration of the Mysteries of Christ. An intention in the Universal Prayer and the

possible use of the Prayer over the People found in the Book of Blessings, nos. 1729-1733, provides

for a suitable liturgical inclusion of Father’s Day.

EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION

• All Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are to have an appointment letter

from the Archbishop.

• Candidates are to be fully initiated practicing Catholics, high school graduates, validly

married (if married), recognized for faith and devotion to the Holy Eucharist as well as

for service in the parish/institution.

• Pastors and chaplains are encouraged to send new Extraordinary Ministers of Holy

Communion to the archdiocesan formation sessions. Current Extraordinary Ministers

of Holy Communion are also welcome to attend.

• Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion typically serve for three years.

Pastors/chaplains may renew terms, if agreeable and in consultation with the minister.

• Pastors and chaplains are reminded to inform the Office for Divine Worship if they

conduct their own formation and to send to this office their request for new

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.

• Request forms can be found on the Office for Divine Worship website. Letters of

Appointment from the Archbishop will then follow.

• Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are appointed for a three-year term and

for the place where they are commissioned. Terms may be renewed if agreeable to both

the pastor/chaplain and the minister.

• All records of active Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are maintained by

the parish/institution.

• Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are commissioned after participation in

IMPORTANT REMINDERS ON WEDDINGS IN CHAPELS

1. Only those Catholic colleges and universities that have requested and have been

granted permission may celebrate weddings on a regular basis. To date four

colleges/universities have been given this special permission: LaSalle University, Saint

Joseph University, Rosemont College, and Cabrini College. (Villanova University’s

Church, which serves as both the university chapel and parish church continues also to

be a site for weddings on a regular basis.)

2. Pastors may give individual permission for a wedding in a chapel within the parish

only on a “case by case” basis. Pastors cannot grant a blanket permission for a chapel to

be used as the site of weddings. Those in charge of chapels cannot presume this

permission and should not, therefore, advertise the chapel as being available for

weddings.

3. Whenever a pastor gives an individual permission for a wedding in a chapel within his

parish, the pastor remains responsible to see to it that any necessary delegation is

granted and that all of the documentation and other pastoral, canonical, and liturgical

preparations for the marriage are completed. Requests to the chancery for

dispensations/permissions must be submitted by the parish - not the chapel. The

wedding is recorded in the parish sacramental register.

DISPLAY OF FLAGS IN CATHOLIC CHURCHES

Surprisingly to many, there are no regulations of any kind governing the display of

flags in Roman Catholic Churches. Neither the Code of Canon law, nor the liturgical

books of the Roman rite comment on this practice. As a result, the question of whether

and how to display the American flag in a Catholic Church is left up to the judgment of

the diocesan bishop, who in turn often delegates this to the discretion of the pastor.

The origin of the display of the American flag in many parishes in the United States

appears to have its origins in the offering of prayers for those who served during the

Second World War (1939-1945). At that time, many bishops and pastors provided a

book of remembrance near the American flag, requesting prayers for loved ones –

especially those serving their country in the armed forces. This practice has since been

confirmed in many places during the Korean, Vietnam and Iraqi conflicts.

The Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy has in the past encouraged pastors not to place

the flag within the sanctuary itself, in order to reserve that space for the altar, the ambo,

the presidential chair and the tabernacle. Instead, the suggestion has been made that the

Page 8: JUNE PRIESTS’ MAILING FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE OF … · Joseph University, Rosemont College, and Cabrini College. (Villanova University’s Church, which serves as both the university

6

American flag be placed outside the sanctuary, or in the vestibule of the Church

together with a book of prayer requests. It remains, however, for the diocesan bishop to

determine regulations in this matter.

REMINDERS ABOUT THE SACRAMENTS OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION

OFFICE FOR DIVINE WORSHIP

ARCHDIOCESE OF PHILADELPHIA

FRIDAY, MAY 8, 2020

Please find below some reminders about the celebration of the Sacraments of Christian Initiation

during the COVID-19 pandemic. As restrictions lift in the State of Pennsylvania for people to

gather once again in small groups, the elect and candidates for the Sacraments of Christian

Initiation should be among those first considered. It is always possible in case of emergency and

for a serious pastoral reason to celebrate the Sacraments of Christian Initiation of adults and

children during this current stay at home phase.

SACRAMENTS OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS AND CHILDREN

Archbishop Perez gives permission for the full sacramental initiation—Baptism, Confirmation

and the Eucharist—of adults (those who have completed fourteen years of age and older) that

ordinarily takes place at the Easter Vigil to be celebrated at a time mutually convenient for all

even beyond Easter Time.

The full sacramental initiation—Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist—of school age

children (over seven years of age) can take place at any time mutually convenient for all even

beyond Easter Time.

o When the liturgical day permits, the Mass for the Conferral of Baptism is used and

the readings come from the Lectionary (Volume 4) for Christian Initiation apart

from the Easter Vigil.

o The plan for the celebration of the Sacraments is found in the Rite of Christian

Initiation of Adults, Part II, Number 2, Christian Initiation of Adults in Exceptional

Circumstances (nn. 340-369).

o The celebration of these Sacraments are recorded in the Baptism Register.

BAPTISM OF CHILDREN

The Baptism of Children is to take place one child at a time with due attention given to the number

of participants and social distancing. Fresh water is to be used for each Baptism during this

Page 12: JUNE PRIESTS’ MAILING FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE OF … · Joseph University, Rosemont College, and Cabrini College. (Villanova University’s Church, which serves as both the university

period. The use of the new Order of Baptism of Children is mandatory as of Easter Sunday, April

12, 2020.

CONFIRMATION OF CATHOLIC ADULTS

The Archbishop grants the faculty to priests of the Archdiocese to confirm Catholic adults (those

who have completed fourteen years of age and older) even beyond Pentecost until further notice.

The 2016 edition of the Order of Confirmation must be used for the Conferral of the Sacrament. A

copy can be provided by the Office for Divine Worship.

• Catholic adults can also be confirmed when the Bishop visits the parish for the

Confirmation of school age children.

• The celebration of Confirmation is recorded in the parish Confirmation Register and at

the church of Baptism.

• The conferral of Confirmation for adults (those who have completed fourteen years of age)

planned for Pentecost Sunday, May 31, 2020 at the Cathedral Basilica will not take place

this year.

CONFIRMATION OF SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN

All scheduled celebrations of the Sacrament of Confirmation for school age children have

been postponed until the Fall of 2020. The Bishop celebrants will reschedule directly with

Pastors.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION

First Holy Communion can be rescheduled as soon as the suspension of public Masses is lifted

and at a time mutually convenient for all. Please allow sufficient time from this date in order for

the children to be properly prepared and have the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of

Penance and Reconciliation. In the case of a very small number of First Holy Communicants, it

is possible, if agreeable to all, when small groups can gather to celebrate one candidate at a time

RECEPTION OF BAPTIZED CHRISTIANS

INTO THE FULL COMMUNION OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

The Reception of Baptized Christians into the Full Communion of the Catholic Church for adults

and children over seven years of age can take place at any time mutually convenient to all at any

time of the year.

• Priests, by faculty of the universal law, confirm in this circumstance without any further

permission from the Archbishop.

• The plan for Reception into Full Communion is found in the Rite of Christian Initiation of

Adults, Part II, Number 5.

• Reception into Full Communion is recorded in the Full Communion Register and not in

the Baptism Register.

Thank you as always for your generous assistance If you have any questions, please do not

hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. In Christ, Father Dennis Gill

They should do so by phone during office hours, mail, or e-mail.

Please do NOT go directly to those priests involved in this ministry. The chancery office serves as a kind of buffer for them.

The chancery office will send the person an extensive questionnaire that will help determine what further attention may be needed. Please note that if the person does not reside in the archdiocese of Philadelphia, they will have to contact their own diocese. It isn’t canonically or realistically possible for our men to assist those in other dioceses.

☀☀SUMMER ASSISTANCE - Throughout the year and especially during the summer months, the Office forClergy receives requests for Mass coverage from pastors. PERMANENT DEACONS DEACON MICHAEL PASCARELLA, JR. _ ASSOCIATE TO THE VICAR FOR CLERGY FOR PERMANENT DEACONS

The Power of the Rosary - An Effective Spiritual Weapon

By M. Deacon Kevin Harrington Assistant to the Associate to the Vicar for Clergy for Permanent Deacons

During this time of Coronavirus and the stay at home order, how can we help our pastors assist parishioners to deal with the social distancing guidelines and come closer to Jesus in our faith? We have been discussing the possibilities of live streaming or recording the Rosary in our parish, as I am sure that many parishes are looking to do the same. As I have been reflecting on the Rosary, I came across Pope Leo XIII and Pope/Saint John Paul II and discovered their writings describing their love of the Rosary. Pope Leo XIII wrote twelve encyclicals and five apostolic letters on the Rosary. Pope Leo XIII would write these in September in anticipation of October as he dedicated a special devotion to Mary through the Rosary. In the Encyclical Supremi apostolates officio (“The Supreme Apostolic Office”), Pope Leo tells of the oldest known Marian prayer known in the Latin tradition called “Sub Tuum Praesidium.” Pope Leo echoed the words of this prayer when he wrote that when Catholics are in danger or experiencing trying times they fly to Mary for refuge. Pope Leo tells us about the power of the Rosary and how it can be used as a spiritual weapon. In October 1884, Pope Leo suggested that the Rosary devotions should be conducted in October in light of a recent outbreak of cholera that spread from the ports. We can also use the spiritual weapon of the Rosary as Pope Leo used it to combat cholera; we too can use it to combat the Coronavirus-19 in 2020. There have been several Popes since the Second Vatican Council that have promoted the Rosary. One who stands out is Pope/Saint John Paul II, as he declared that the year 2002 would be The Year of the Rosary. He tells us a powerful story in his Apostolic Letter, Rosarium Virginis Mariae, that he set his first year as Pope within the daily rhythm of the Rosary. For that reason, and the fact that the Rosary was his favorite prayer, he declared his twenty-fifth year as Pope as The Year of the Rosary. Pope/Saint John Paul II goes on to tell us that the Rosary is one of the traditional paths of prayer that will direct you to the contemplation of Christ’s face. In praying the Rosary, you can find yourself diving into the mysteries, and through each Hail Mary recited in your heart, the rhythm of the prayer that becomes an unceasing praise of Christ and a beautiful place of reflection on all of the mysteries. Maybe in this time of great need, seclusion, and social distancing, we can find a way to help bring our parishioners to a closer relationship with God through the Rosary. Through technology, we can bring the Rosary right into their living rooms and virtually sit right next to them by live-streaming the Rosary or by placing recordings of each Mystery on the parish website for them to view in May, and beyond. There are many possibilities, but one thing is for sure, social distancing rules do not apply to our prayer life, and what better way get in rhythm with your faith but through the Rosary, the best spiritual weapon to help all of us in this time of need.

Please remember in your prayers the relatives of our brother priests and deacons who have died.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

MEETING WITH THE ARCHBISHOP The meeting of deacons and wives with the Archbishop, scheduled for Saturday, June 6, 2020, has been postponed until sometime in the fall. This is a result of the continuing COVID-19 lockdown. A date, time and location will be announced at a later time. Please monitor your emails for updates. PARISH CONTRACT When parish operations return to normal, please submit any outstanding Parish Contracts and Commitment to Ministry Forms. These forms were sent to your pastor, and should be completed by you and your pastor, and a copy of the contract sent to the Office for Clergy for your personnel file. NOTE: On the Commitment to Ministry Form, the line for “Sponsor” refers to the pastor. FBI AND PA CHILD ABUSE CLEARANCE RENEWALS All members of the clergy are required to have a new FBI fingerprint records check and a PA Child Abuse Clearance every five years. Three months prior to the expiration of your current clearances, you will be notified by the Office for Clergy with instructions as to how to go about obtaining these documents. Once received, originals are sent to the Office for Clergy. DEACON RELATED FORMS For those in need of the following forms, please email please email Laura Nimmons at [email protected].

• Funeral Guidelines • Database Information Form • Commitment to Ministry • Parish Contract • 2020 Ongoing Formation/Retreat Reporting Form

Priests can access most of these forms on the Priest’s Portal under the documents tab.

REMINDER ABOUT THE DEATH OF A DEACON OR A DEACON’S WIFE In the event of the death of a deacon or spouse, families should notify the Office for Clergy as soon as possible, and before final funeral arrangements are made. As the funeral of a deacon is an Archdiocesan event, the music selection needs to be reviewed by the Office for Divine Worship. This should be done by having the parish music director contact the Office for Divine Worship directly. Also, when possible, the Archbishop would prefer to be the principal celebrant at the funeral of a deacon or spouse of a deacon. In his absence, an auxiliary bishop may be the principal celebrant, based on availability. Any questions should be directed to Deacon Michael Pascarella at [email protected].

SPIRITUAL DIRECTION The list of approved spiritual directors has been revised. Please contact Deacon Michael Pascarella for more information about finding an approved spiritual director.

Lily’s Gift Ministry Lily’s Gift Ministry is a network of concerned parents and professionals who have experienced, or worked closely with, issues surrounding poor prenatal diagnosis. To expectant parents, we offer unique insight and sensitivity regarding such difficult issues as:

• Maintaining hope when a prognosis is poor • Sorting through medical decision making • Grieving the loss of the anticipated baby • Stillbirth and neonatal critical care.

For more information, visit www.Lily’sGift.org or call Sr. Kathleen Schipani at 215-587-3530.

June 2020 • Update from The Pontifical Mission Societies

The Missionary Cooperation Plan Appeal Weekend Summer for the Societies is the time that we coordinate Mission group speakers at each parish for the Missionary Cooperation Plan [MCP] Appeals. I realize that we are in a time in which there is still a high degree of uncertainty due to the Coronavirus pandemic. It is difficult to think about what will be happening next week, let alone what will be happening in July and August.

The Societies cannot overlook, however, the needs of the overseas foreign Missionary groups that are supported each year in the Summer Missionary Cooperation Plan [MCP]. As with most catastrophic events, the world’s poor have been hit the hardest. This pandemic has left entire communities without food and water, without enough medical supplies, without enough . . . of everything. Our MCP Missionaries rely primarily on this Appeal and the support of YOU and the faithful of your parish. I am asking for you and your parish’s help and understanding to help our Societies office coordinate a weekend appeal for your assigned Mission group.

Please schedule a weekend for the MCP appeal COLLECTION. I am asking you to schedule this collection for your parish, regardless of whether the group has a local Missionary that is available to come and speak in person or not. All weekends must be scheduled before September, 2020. The Societies does not have authorization to take the MCP appeals beyond this time frame as there are other collections scheduled. Some groups have local Mission representatives, so our hope is that the groups may have speakers available. Others come from overseas and will not be able to speak in person.

If the Group CANNOT SPEAK IN PERSON at Masses: Our Societies office will send communication to your parish about your group and what the MCP appeal will help fund. The communication will include on-line elements such as, announcements, photos and video [if available from the group]. Our office will send Posters with your assigned Mission Group Name/Date, Envelopes and World Mission Rosary brochures. [these quantities you ordered earlier in the year].

If the Group CAN SPEAK IN PERSON at Masses: All the Summer MCP Appeal Weekend announcement materials above will be sent to the Parish AND You and your Parish faithful will have to benefit of hearing first-hand from a Missionary!

My office will communicate with the Mission representatives to begin contacting you [if they have not already] for the Summer MCP appeal. We will also be sending a Scheduling form to assist our Mission representatives. Feel free to contact Michele Meiers at [email protected], if there are any questions. Thank you ahead of time for you and your parish’s cooperation and support of this Summer’s Missionary Cooperation Plan Appeal Weekends.

Sincerely in Christ’s Mission and in my prayers,

Reverend Monsignor Arthur E. Rodgers

Missionary Childhood Association Update Due to COVID-19, many Summer Religious Education programs are being rescheduled, canceled or have implemented virtual learning. I am happy to announce that the Missionary Childhood Association can be made available to you through Zoom conference, pre-recorded video or in-person, at any time over the Summer or Fall that best fits your schedule. REMEMBER—it is important that even during a pandemic, children be reminded of their call to be Missionary and their role in praying and sacrificing for others who are not as fortunate.

With so many of us working from home, I am also pleased to share with you an online sign up form for

presentations. Click HERE to complete form. Upon filling out the form, I will personally contact you to make

arrangements for your School or Parish Religious Education programs. Ali Holden, Mission Education Manager
