Travel – or Travail?

Holiday season is upon us, and as I write I have just returned from a week’s break,in which we enjoyed 5 days in Scotland before driving our daughter down to her new workplace on the south coast. In total I have driven over 800 miles over thecourse of the week, the vast majority of it on motorways. In many ways that is agood way to travel – it’s fast, it’s efficient, it enables you to get from A to B withas little hassle as possible. In many ways motorway travel is symbolic of life today– aiming for speed, efficiency and progress as smoothly as possible. That is howmany of us live our lives, most of the time. But motorways are also incrediblymind-numbing. There is nothing beautiful or awe-inspiring, and if you are like me

you need the mental stimulation of the radio or music to keep you mentally alert.

After some 250 miles of continuous motorway travel, the radio had become myindispensable companion to prevent my mind turning to complete jelly. Then we

turned off the rather soulless motorway network onto the final stretch of our long  journey to Aberfeldy – a tourist route of much narrower lanes, passing quaint Scottish villages, calm tarns, forests of Scots pine and rugged mountains. Theradio was turned off – suddenly a new surge of energy seemed to surge throughme. I felt alive. Our speed felt like crawling in comparison to the swift, efficient

travel of the previous 4 hours. The twists and turns demanded a concentrationand adaptability which felt completely different to the concentration exacted of me on the motorway, but the whole experience breathed life into me. If motorway

travel is symbolic of the way life is lived today, perhaps these small Scottish lanesare symbolic of how life is intended to be lived. The pace is different. Beauty isnot sacrificed to speed. You don’t need constant background noise to keep youalert.

Perhaps holidays are a God-given opportunity to adjust our pace, to slow down, to allow the beauty we have so often allowed to pass us by to find its place in our spirit again. We find we ‘come alive’ again, lifted from the mind-numbing rush of motorway living. That way holidays become what they were always intended tobe - holy days – days to attune ourselves again to God, creation, and one another.

As I write the news is full of the revelations of phone hacking, The News of theorld has just completed its last print-run, and accusations and questions are

rife as to how this could have happened, and been allowed to happen. It makesme wonder whether this is just symptomatic of a culture of ‘motorway living’,

where results, sales, efficiency and the need to be constantly ahead of everyoneelse are key values for living. Minds become numbed. Progress is made but at

the expense of being ‘fully alive’. That’s when value judgments become tainted, and mistakes are made. It is easy to point the finger. But these things have

arisen in our culture and are symptoms of the disease of ‘motorway living’.

Maybe Jesus knew what he was talking about when he said, “Enter through the

narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road is wide that leads to destruction, and there are many who take it. The gate is narrow and the road is hard what leads to life, and there are few who find it.” (Matt 7:13,14).

May our holidays indeed be holy days of refreshment and renewal, and may theyhelp us to find a pattern of life which frees us from numbed minds!

Coving crisis!

Members of the congregation were surprised to find the church partially ropedoff to prevent anyone sitting directly beneath the coving a few weeks ago. Thisfollowed an unexpected fall of a large chunk of plaster coving which left a great deal of dust and debris in its wake.

hilst a cursory inspection has been done, and there does not appear to be anyimmediate cause for concern with other sections, our architect has advised us

to take these precautions until a thorough survey can be completed and anynecessary preventative treatment applied. It would appear that this old (and veryheavy) coving, containing horsehair and lime, has, after well over 100 years insitu, become de-bonded from the wall. Unfortunately this means that the cost of

the specialist survey any remedial work and will not be something we are likely

to be able to reclaim on our insurance. As a consequence we will have to usesome of the money we have set aside towards the kitchenette and toilet project

to rectify this problem. Please bear with us as we seek to cope with this further challenge to us. An ancient building like St. Mary’s is a joy to worship in, but itsupkeep isn’t always so much of a joy! Please bear this in mind when you use

this lovely building! If you are able to help financially towards the cost of this work, either the imme-diate remedial work or the development project, there are Gift Aid envelopes inchurch for your use. Thank you!

Songs of Praise in West Ardsley.

es- Songs of Praise in West Ardsley! Wow! The TV cameras might not be therebut that’s a minor detail after all, isn’t it? Just as in the TV programme, it is hoped

that a number of people will choose a hymn which has a special significance for  them, and say a little bit about why they chose it. Then we all sing it together.Given the volume we can raise on these occasions it should be a rousing evening!

hy not put it in your diary now? at

The Eagle has landed – this time his head

is the right way up!! -Otherwise known as

‘The Monks Window returns’ After three long months of restoration by stained glass conservators, the ancient

Monks’ Window has been returned to church. The window was removed in a longand delicate operation just after Easter, and taken to workshops in Ilkley for thepainstaking work to be done.

he window was first created after fragments of glass were salvaged in 1832 after a major storm destroyed much of the roof and walls of the building. The pieces

were worked into the design which has been enjoyed for the last 180 years or so,but in restoration a few errors were uncovered in the original workmanship. Not only were some of the pieces put together ‘inside out’ so that the decorated side

has suffered from 180 years of weathering, but for 180 years the poor eagle hashad his head upside down! Now at last he looks much happier put together correctly.

he window is encased in protective polycarbonate which should mean it ispreserved for generations to come to enjoy. We are told that the conservators,

Jonathan and Ruth Cooke, greatly enjoyed the labour of love which has con-sumed their last three months. We are hugely grateful to the Church Buildings’Council for their generous grant of £10,000 which has enabled us to proceed with

the work much sooner than we might otherwise have been able to do. Iencourage you to make the time to examine the window in all its glory.

Have you NOTICED our new boards?

One of the key tasks highlighted as we researched views to put together aransformational Plan for St. Mary’s was to improve our ‘roadside image’ withbetter signage. We hope you have noticed new sign and notice board at the front of the Parish Centre, and feel this is a step in the right direction. Any feedback

 would be very welcome!

e would love to add to these a replacement for the main church notice board, following a similar style but allowing for increased visibility to passers-by. Theexisting one has given many years’ service but is now deteriorating badly. Givenour challenging financial situation we have not felt able to approve this expend-iture but hope that we will be able to make some progress on this in the future.

atch this space – or maybe that should be ‘watch the signs’?

 The Big 50

he second Friday of July was our Golden Wedding Anniversary and surprisingly  there was a wedding taking place on that very morning at St. Mary’s. Sallysuggested that we might attend the service so obviously we did. I think she

wanted to remind me of the vows I took fifty years ago and check whether I’d kept   to them! It was lovely wedding and we wished the newlyweds every futurehappiness. After the wedding we went for a meal together then ended the dayby going to the Grand Theatre to see ‘Evita’. A lovely day!

he following day we had been told by our daughter Susan to keep free as she thought some of our family from Manchester might visit us. At midday our sonChristopher phoned to advise that he and his family were coming across and

would arrive at about 3pm. They duly arrived (late as usual) and said they hadarranged a special treat for us. Sally panicked, thinking it might be a bungee

jump or a ride in a hot air balloon. Instead we were taken to the Babes in theood.

hen we went in we realised why such an amazing number of people had sent us greetings cards. The place was packed with family, neighbours, churchmembers, former work makes, friends, old quiz-team players, Mums & Tots,Playgroup staff etc. The pub was festooned with streamers, balloons photographsand welcome posters and a buffet had been prepared. It transpired that our daughter had surreptitiously acquired our address book and had been phoning

and texting people for weeks asking them to attend. She must have got messages to everyone except our dentist and the plumber! Sally and I werehumbled that so many people took the trouble to join us on our special day. Welater found out that Susan had cajoled, pleaded, pestered and badgered lots of our friends to assist her and Frances with the catering and decorating, and weare very grateful to all of them and to the staff at the Babes in the Wood for their efforts. I won’t give any names in case I forget someone, but you all know who

 you are.

e had a wonderful evening (and early morning) that we will never forget. Our eight family members who stayed overnight at the Babes were impressed by theaccommodation and breakfast provided and hopefully will stay there again when

they next come over so that Sally doesn’t have to make breakfast and I don’t have to wash up!

PS. We spent the following week surrounded by flowers and empty wine bottles.hanks to all for your generosity and good wishes.

Stewardship – What happens if . . . ? Jesus Christ, Son of God, takes a human place within the world and claims it ashis own. He calls us to join him, bringing back this world of things to its proper place under God’s authority. He makes us responsible for it. This is called‘Stewardship’.

I cast a vote in favour of closing my local church.

I vote to stop missionary activity in this hour of great world need.

I will give something even if, of necessity, mine must be small.

I make it possible for my church to plan in advance and make it easier for my-self.

I shall testify to the high value I place upon Christ and the Church in minister-ing to the physical and spiritual needs of suffering humanity.

- God has put enough money in the pockets of Christians to do everything heexpects of them.- It’s odd, in a church with people of great faith, to have financial problems.- Giving is the thermometer of our love.- Blessed are those who can give without remembering and take without forget-

ting.- When giving to God, we are just taking our hands off what belongs to him.- Stewardship involves the whole Church taking the whole gospel to the wholeof the world, and to the whole of every person.- Christian Stewardship can become a way of life, and lead to a meaningful per-sonal relationship with God and the Holy Spirit.- Christian Stewardship has got nothing to do with chance. It is about certainty,

faith and faithfulness.- Each new day is a gift from God and also an opportunity for further service in

 the name of Jesus Christ.

- A Christian Steward fulfils his or her responsibilities as God-giventasks, in a joyful response to Christ as Saviour and Lord.Stewardship isn’t mainly about meeting budgets. It’s more about opening our lives to God’s Spirit. That’s why stewardship and growth go together.

 Jaunty July!

Did you know that this July was a very special one? This year the monthcontained five Fridays, five Saturdays and five Sundays, something that will not

happen again for more than 300 years! It was particularly special for Sally andme with our granddaughter Frances’ school prom falling in the first week and our Golden Wedding Anniversary in the second week.

Frances and her friends at Woodkirk High had been preparing for their end of school prom at Elland Road for several weeks, excitedly discussing what they

would wear and what mode of transport they would use to travel to the event.Frances ordered a dress over the internet and booked her transport from KJB

edding Hire who advertise in our Church Magazine. When the dress arrived it  was beautiful but was too long and needed some adjustments. Our friend andneighbour Barbara Sykes, who is a very skilled dressmaker, very kindly offered tomake the necessary changes and the end result was perfection!

he big day finally arrived and a proud party of parents and grandparentsgathered at our home to wave off Frances and boyfriend Curtis. The shiny blueMercedes 500 Limousine duly arrived dead on time and driver Keith Broadley, another friend, presented Frances with a beautiful bunch of flowers before

whisking her and Curtis to their special event. The young couple had anenjoyable and memorable evening at Elland Road with all their friends and are

very grateful for the kindness shown by Barbara and Keith.

1st Woodkirk Brownies

End of Another Year

his year has been a very successful one; Leonie and I continue to run Brownies together with the help of Young Leader Harriet and Ranger Grace, we also relyon the help and support of parents, carers and our friends at Church.his year we have been very busy the autumn term started with Girlguiding

Centenary celebrations. We joined other Brownies, Rainbows and Guides at Shaw Cross Boys Club for a party and crafts. In November we looked at the Hindu festival of light – Diwali and made poppycraft for Remembrance Day. Our Christmas craft night was a huge success as

was our Easter craft night in April. In the Spring the Brownies have been working on their booklover badge. Thegirls have made book marks, shown they can handle books correctly and dis-cuss their favourite books. The Brownies have also had to complete their ownresearch about their local library.

As a pack we completed the Out and About badge, we finished the badge witha walk around Pugney’s water park where one of our Brownies made their promise too.he Brownies also work on some badges independently such as Swimmer,

Dancer and Rider which are signed by their instructors.his year the Brownies have sponsored children’s bibles for Baptism. They are

very excited when they receive their certificate and find out which baby has re-ceived their bible.

his year we have worked hard to raise money for different charities. We have just completed the Children with Leukaemia Marathon Challenge raising over £200. The Brownies completed a number of challenges including making blindfolded sandwiches and lots of activities involving the number 26.Our Leader Leonie has been very busy this year completing three(London, Edin-burgh and Iceland) 26 mile marathon walks for Walk the Walk Breast Cancer Charity. The Brownies have supported her by buying pin badges and makingsun-catcher flip flops and selling them.Leonie will be running Brownies from September to October while Hannah is on

maternity leave.

I found this amongst some old papers when doing some sorting, it may bringback a few memories!

Holiday Journey

My granddad bought an Austin Seven, in thirty three or so,(The sort with starter handle that you turned to make it go),

And once or twice, in summer, Dad would borrow it and we, Would take the car, and have an expedition to the sea.

It didn’t have a boot, and so we always had to pack, The wherewithal to make the tea, in boxes in the back,

And I and sister Sheila had to share the tiny seat, With food and cups and primus, on our laps and round our feet.

Then Mum in front, would put the towels and swimsuits on the floor, And Dad would hand the baby in, and firmly lock the door,

A final check, a handle’s turn and we would be away,Restricted but excited on our one day holiday.

Between the boxes we would peer at scenery passing by, Though the Austin Seven was very low, and hedges very high, The roads were very narrow then, and very soon you’d find us, With charabancs and motor cars, all queuing up behind us.

For though Dad drove it very well, with so much in the car,

Its maximum was only about thirty miles an hour, We’d have to keep on pulling in, to let the queues go past,But in spite of all the hold-ups we’d reach Scarborough at last.

And there we’d spend a simple and most pleasurable day, Till at last the time would come, when we’d pack everything away, And again the Austin Seven would go trundling down the road,Holding up streams of traffic, with its cramped and sleepy load.

But while modern children travel far by Eurostar and plane.

To Turkey or to Italy, to the Greek Islands or to Spain, And future kids may holiday to Jupiter or Mars,

They’ll never have a journey, as enjoyable as ours.

e would like to thank all those who have helped, but especially Amanda &Derek, for all their hard work, planning and support that they have given to the

annabees.

e know that a new group will be formed in the future and we encourage youall to give it a go. Thank You!

Playgroup Update

his term we have had a topic on ‘what we like to do’ and have been spendingsome time outside for picnics, sand play and having running races, all of which

the weather has been kind to us and the children have loved!

eek Commencing 18 th July will be our party week. We will be having abouncy castle every day and saying goodbye to 22 children leaving us to go toschool nurseries! We do have 15 new starters in September and with existingchildren taking extra sessions are currently full at 25 each day. With this fullregister we are currently reviewing the possibility of a 5 th member of staff andhope to start recruiting in September. If you know anyone interested in thisposition then watch the notice boards for further announcements.

Many thanks to all our committed volunteers and parents who have contrib-uted to playgroup throughout this school year.

e break up for our summer holidays on Thursday 21st  July and return onMonday 5 th September.
