Once again a SALA (South AustralianLiving Artists) exhibition is being held

at the Arnold Gallery in the MannumTourist and Visitor Centre.

The exhibition titled “River Life”commenced on Friday July 30th, and willcontinue until Sunday August 22nd.

The official opening by Mr Ian Mann

OAM, mayor of the Mid Murray Council,will be at 6:00pm, Friday 6th of August.

Everyone is welcome to visit the galleryand enjoy these works. Entry is free.

The Arnold Gallery at the Mannum DockMuseum is open, Monday to Friday 9am to5pm and Saturday and Sunday 10:00 am to4pm.

Mannum Dock Museum for the ‘River LifeExhibition’ as part of the State’s SALAFestival - A Celebration of the Visual Arts.

Photographer Shane Strudwick will againbe showing his stunning photographs of theriver. He is joined this time by three localartists Sandie Kuehne, Roger Baker andBarrie Walker, exhibiting their diverseworks featuring paintings and sculpturesreflecting life on the water, River and theMurray landscape.

Shane Strudwick said, “As a local SouthAustralian environmental photographer I’vespent lots of time over the years with theintention of capturing what I consider thesoul, essence and beauty of both thelandscape but also the character of the rivercommunities across South Australia,Victoria and New South Wales - ourwonderful River Life. Seeing it as one riverthrough many lands has been critical tosharing a story with viewers and help lay afoundation of re-appreciation for our greatriver.”

Many of his images offer a view of ourriver landscapes and communities throughwhich viewers can connect and have anintimacy with the region.

“If we see the beauty in our local regionwe can also see the bigger picture of adiverse and beautiful journey Australia’sgreat Murray River takes through manycommunities” he said.

Shane will release his new book MurrayRiver Mallee - Australia’s Great RiverLandscape at the SALA Festival inMannum and many of the images from thebook are on display at the exhibition. Thebook compiles over 6 years of Shane’sphotographicstories, characters, landscapes,heritage and culture in a beautiful coffeetable book any passionate river lover orAustralian would proudly want to own.

It is the first time local Barry Walker hashad his amazing artwork on public display.He is extremely excited to share his oilpaintings of paddle steamers, bird life andsurrounding landscape with visitors and theMannum community.

“SALA has provided me with theopportunity to promote mywork for the firsttime and I hope to be involved in manymore exhibitions at the Arnold Gallery”,said Barrie Walker.

Barrie moved to Mannum 7 years ago andhas always had a keen interest in art but didnot have the opportunity to fully pursue ituntil he retired in 1989.

He has experimented in many mediumsincluding acrylics, water colours, oils, inkand pencil drawings and is self taught. Hetries to reflect authenticity in his work andloves all things Australian, including thelandscape, architecture and bird life.

Roger Baker loves the water and River lifeand will exhibit sculptures, paintings andselections from his current interest in linocut prints.

Out of all the different mediums he workswith, he is finding this new technique themost enjoyable, challenging and rewarding.

Roger said, “What is motivating me forthis SALA exhibition is to promote art inMannum, to highlight that there is more toMannum than jet skis and wake boats! ... Ithink the community will be very surprisedby the quality of the works, and I hope thatMannum will embrace this exhibition bycoming along and taking a look. In thecoming years, it would be wonderful to seethis event continue to grow, by including

other artists and encouraging young artistsfrom the local college to participate.”

Sandie Kuehne has found an abundanceof exciting new painting subjects sincerelocating to Mannum and said, “Myfocus is not only on river and rural scenes;I also get great delight in depicting theless serious side of life, through myinvolvement with the “Murray Darlings”Red Hatters.

A Picture is Worth AThousand Words

Dear Editor,Mobile phones are fabulous.

They take photographs,especially of certain paid, hardworking council men, those wehave elected, asleep inmeetings. Maybe I am wrongand they were in deepmeditation!

I am compiling a collage ofphotographs to be presented atsome future date, showing thegreat participation and interestthat various councillors take inthe workings of Mannum.

Now that’s history, and theycan’t bulldoze that.

A Little thought Goes A long Way

Dear Editor,There has been a lot said and

written lately about “what iswrong with Mannum.”

Every town has its problemsand fixing them is not easy.Things that annoy me and couldbe fixed are listed below.

I am no wowser but cannotunderstand hotels being openuntil the early hours of themorning; that is when housesare damaged, sign postsdamaged, and the list goes on.

Another annoying thing is thebusiness people in the town.They park their cars in front oftheir shops. They will talk toyou when you are spending yourmoney in their shop, and thenten minutes later they don’teven say “good day” when youmeet them in the street.

The footpaths in front of someshops are a disgrace,particularly in front of thesupermarket.

Most people will say “goodday” but there are some whowill ignore you, put their headdown and walk on.

Another thing, within Councilcontrol, is banning vehiclesfrom doing U-turns in the mainstreet, between BankSA and theInformation Centre.

With the river in its bad state,I cannot understand why jet skisare allowed to do so much

damage and cause so muchnoise.

These are just a few pointsthat annoy me and probablyothers, that could be fixed witha bit of thought.

[Staff and proprietors of manybusinesses in Mannum do contributetime, money and resources to supportthe community. Perhaps advertising aproperty 10 minutes from Mannum as“space for dirt bike riding” fits intothe thoughtless category of thecorrespondent above. Further out(Black Hill), a property is described asa “Bushwalkers and CampersParadise” with “Kangaroos, the oddemu and wombat, plus ample bird life”that is “Ideal for motorbiking,quadbiking ...”

Is there a necessary trade-offbetween attracting new residents andaccepting some “annoying” traits?

Not Going Green

Dear Editor,‘Mannum Hospital Goes

Green’ proclaimed the Juneissue of the Mannum Mag. Suchheadlines create visions of asustainable community. Solarpower, permaculture gardens,grey water systems, compostingtoilets.

MEAC would like to formallyacknowledge the wonderfulwork of the Mannum HospitalAuxiliary. We include 4generations of locals who haveutilised and been grateful forthe services they help to deliver.

With absolute respect to theMannum Hospital Auxiliary,there is nothing ‘green’ aboutartificial turf. Going Green isnot about a colour. It is aboutlifestyle and a set of values.

Yes, the colour green issoothing but plastic grass is nottherapeutic. The healing valueof a garden is the very fact thatit is living.

Irony lies with turf farmsinstead of food farms andMurray water being pumped towater the Dunes Golf Club onthe York Peninsula. CaravanParks, pensioners and sportinggroups can get special wateringprivileges so why not ourCentres of Healing.

We believe that the modestlittle lawn at the MannumHospital could have been kepthad our elected representativesfacilitated dispensation of

watering issues. Our hope isthat Council does not go downthis road if it decides we cannotafford to water ‘The Rec’.

Finally, we would like to takethis opportunity to pay tribute toMonica Fontain-Geary, a pastAuxiliary member who passedaway recently. She is aninspiration to the MEAC.

Irreparable Damage

aim of contacting all males whoare currently living in theSchubert Electorate, who wereborn between November 1933and December 1939 - and 1945and 1952.

As your State Member, alongwith the National Servicemen'sAssociation of Australia we areendeavouring tocontact those ofyou who have not claimed yourmedals.

Have you claimed yourAnniversaryofNational ServiceMedal - and the AustralianDefence Medal?

All National Servicemen maybe entitled to receive thesemedals whether you servedoverseas or only in Australia. Ifnot, please contact the NationalServicemen's Association inyour area, listed below, who willassist in claiming what isrightfully yours. The revived interest in thisperiod of our National History issuch that over $550 000 hasbeen donated towards the cost ofthe Memorial. The involvementof National Servicemen toAustralia's development hasbeen significant.

Most recently 64 000, 20 yearolds were conscripted into theArmy during the 1960s/70s ofwhich 17 500 were sent toVietnam and Borneo - where212 died on Active Service and1500 were wounded.

Mannum Celebration DaySunday 31st October 2010 – 10am to 3pm

The Murraylands RegionalTourist Association Inc

invites all Mannum communityand businesses to come and joinus in a celebration of theMannum Township RiverHistory and a CommemorativeLaunch. Due to circumstancesbeyond our control, as thesaying goes, we have had tochange the date of this event,announced last month.

In 1933 a “Back to Mannum”day was held to improvecommunity morale due to theDepression and flood. This wasalso the year when theSojourner was launched.

Our event will have a 1933theme to which the whole of thecommunity is invited.

Planning is still in progress.Do you have any photographs of

the 1933s? Whatwere they wearing,driving, riding then?

Do you have a program of the“Back to Mannum” celebration in1933?

Do you have any great ideas tomake this day really special?

Can you assist us before or on theDay?

Does your club or group have amarquee available for loan we are inneed of one more for the day.

At the Reserve we will havefamily fun activities and gamespertaining to the old days.There will be canoes and boats,

a Lions BBQ, and informationtents where local clubs,museums and businesses willshow what they do in thecommunity. Ideally, a l lMannum community clubs,associations, museums andother organisations will beinvolved.

The launch of the canoe trailand the new flier A Piano TellsA Story will take place duringthe day.

There will be stalls anddisplays of photographs and artof the 30s. (Flood, depression,pre war period.) We hope thatthe beam engine will be firingdown at the Mannum DockMuseum.

Locals and visitors will beencouraged to visit the PSMarion, the Dock Museum, OldDays Old Ways and MannumGem and Mineral Gallery.

Whistle TootFull Steam Ahead

The PS Marion and theMannum Museum have

been very busy since the lastedition and will continue thisway until the end of September.

There have been well attendedworking bees to keep up withmaintenance, and also toprepare the boat for theRockford Steam-poweredDinner weekend cruises, the lastof which is being held over theweekend of 27th to 29th August.

PS Marion has been the venuefor 2 private functions as well -both were birthday events, andwere enjoyed enormously by theparticipants. On both occasionsthe boat cruised with itsbirthday passengers, and wasu s e d f o r o v e r n i g h taccommodation.

The next cruises will be from5th August to 9th August. This isto support the State HistoryConference being held inMurray Bridge. The PS Marionwill cruise from Mannum toMurray Bridge on 5th August,and return on 9th August. Bothcruises are fully booked.

To cruise effortlessly the PSMarion needs lots of wood, andour Wood Fairy Dave Prescott,waving his magic wand, and aband of willing volunteers arealways available to load the oldwooden boat with the woodneeded for cruising. It has beenmade easier these days. Anelectrically driven conveyorbelt, which Dave designed,delivers the wood from the truckon to the old ferry that is usedas a floating dock while theriver is low. Also new pressureand bilge pumps have beeninstalled in the hold of the boat.Since this change, overnightpassengers have been treated tohigher pressure hot water in theshowers, and have commentedfavourably. The Marion is nowsteaming with a refurbished

funnel too, thanks to volunteerSteve Garland.

At this stage it is planned thatthe PS Marion will steam toBerri in September for slipping,so that work on the hull andpaddle boxes can take place.

Workrevitalising the ground floormuseum is also going ahead.Roger Baker is creating replicasin wood of the engine and pumpof Randall’s boat the MaryAnn.These will go on display in themuseum to compliment the newstory boards installed earlierthis year.

The Mannum RSL hasdonated the cost of a high-

low bed to Aminya Hostel.President Mark Davis

On Saturday the 14th ofAugust there is a function at theMurray Bridge RSL, and we areusing the Hall Bus. The first 10people to go will fill the bus.The cost is $10 each person.

The bus leaves the front of theClub at 1030 hrs, so please

inform the Secretary if you wishto attend.

Our next meeting will be heldon Thursday the 19th of Augustat the Mannum CommunityClub at 1100 hrs.

Easy in the Sun

In July, with a group of writers published by Ginninderra Press, we visited ‘The Cedars’ Hahndorf, home of Sir Hans Heysen. We wereguided through the heritage-listed house and studio, then wandered the grounds “soaking in atmosphere” to write poetry for a book our

publisher will launch there in October. It was our first visit, but we’re itching to return. For this month’s Mag, we present a po’m each,inspired by our visit and Colin Thiele’s biography ‘Heysen Of Hahndorf’.

Easy In The Sun

Old Man Collins lights his pipe to advertise the day’s begun.Drawing on its blackened stem while resting easy in the sun,he contemplates a cottage neat across the lane - between the plumesof smoke - from which the master’s gone. His paintin’ neighbour, he assumes,was well away to catch the rays of breakin’ dawn at sparrer fart,and probably till close of day he’ll capture sunlight with his art.

Old Man Collins ruminates on coins that jingle in his coat,as payment for his modellin’ - an easy take at Billygoat!“Just walk him up and down the lane”, he says to me and so I do,while him as asked me sketches fast to catch the mood and movements true.“I’ll model for you’s anytime,” says I to Hans and, ‘taint no joke,he pays me more to strike a match and light me pipe and have a smoke!

The simple art of reflecting an image by theuse of a mirror has aided our perceptions down

through the ages in art astronomy and photography.Reflecting a shade or colour onto the subject assists

photographers to get that crispness or sparkle in a portrait. Ona sunny day, the use of gold or silver filters on a flash unitbuilds contrast in a photograph. As in photography, the filmindustry was built up around the art of saying something withan image.

All the colours are wavelengths of light at a certainfrequency. A mirror that reflects an image to your eye isreflecting the entire spectrum that includes the colours thatbuild an image on the retina of your eye or camera film.

The principle of reflecting light has been used down throughthe ages. For example, to get light into the heart of thepyramids the Egyptians used reflectors long before ourmodern, permanent silver surfaces were thought of.

The point being made is that light was used in many differentways and applications in an effort to harness its properties tocreate or reveal information in the form of an image. It hasbeen put forward that the next computers may use reflectedlight rather than circuits of wire or solder to processinformation.

With the advent of the reflecting telescope and its use ofreflected light to form an image of the universe around us, thesimple use of reflection has been built on. The massive Kecktelescope in Hawaii uses computers, mirrors and a moremodern invention, the air conditioner, to maintain the criticalconditions needed for the segments of the large mirrors thatcombine to formincredible images fromearth based telescopes.

July saw the Lions Club of Ridley moveinto action very early in the “Lions NewYear” by catering for a Black Tie Dinner

at Punyelroo Camping, Caravanning,Residential and Recreational Site. Held inan old, but comfortably restored shearingshed/barn at this delightful riverside venue,the dinner was organised by Swan ReachProgress Association on behalf of SwanReach Area School.

Although conditions could have beenconsidered “freezing” outside, about 120were entertained by the schools musiciansand entertainers including the G4's localyouth band and other singers. The school isseeking support for its band and BlackSwan Pedal Prix Racing Team as well asother activities. Donations are alwayswelcome to help continue these vital

Mildura for a 2 Daycompetitionon Saturday 12th and Sunday13th of the June long weekend.

Arriving Fridaynight to campat the course, we werewelcomed by a campfire andother Archers staying there incaravans, tents and campers.

On Saturday at 9:00am wemustered for check in. Afterbow checks and some practice,it was off to shoot the newphotographic paper targets; afirst round 3 arrow morningfollowed by a 1 arrow round

after lunch. Some members shota personal best.

The evening meal wassupplied by the club; a 2 course,soup and mains. Great value at$10.00 per head. This wasfollowed by the Branch AGM.

Sunday we were off to shoot 3D on a different course. A greatday, with the same structure asthe Saturday.

At the final presentations anddrawing of the raffle, which hadgreat prizes, I had a win.

One of the events that theMannum Lions becomes

involved in each year is theLions’ Auction. It’s an event thatraises thousands of dollarsannually - money which is thenused to support a wide range oflocal and national causes. Thisyear’s auction is to be held at theMannum Showgrounds on themorning of November 6th.

Items to be auctioned can beeither donated to the Lions orsold on commission. Rod Pratt,who will be in charge of thisyear’s auction, has stressed thathigh value commission items,

such as cars, boats and caravans,should be advertised beforehandin order to attract potentialbidders. “Anyone with suchgoods to auction would benefitfrom letting the Lions knowearly,” he said. “These items canthen be listed on the flyers weletter-box around Mannum in theweek before the auction.”

Many lower value goods aredonated to the auction and theLions are happy to help transportsuch goods to the Showgrounds.“We’ll pick up any good, clean,saleable goods,” said Rod. “Butplease don’t ask us to take goods

we can’t sell! Old technology,such as outdated computers andTVs and electrical items that arenot in good working conditionare difficult to sell,” he added.“And we’re simplynot allowed tosell mattresses and old cots thatdon’t meet current hygiene andsafety standards.”

Try A Little Laughter

Last month we thought aboutresilience and how we can

build it up so we don’t getsquashed by the heavy things oflife. It’s good to haveinformation about stress bustersfor when you need it, even ifyou think you never will. Ofcourse what works for somefolk doesn’t work for others;just as stressors are different foreach of us.

How we think, feel andbehave influences our mentalhealth. Reducing stress inpractical ways can mean thedifference between good healthand bad. So do yourself afavour; remember to laugh oreven work up a smile, make aneffort if necessary! Then theblood flow to the brain isincreased, endorphins (painkilling hormones that give us asense of well being) are releasedand levels of stress hormonesdrop.

Get involved in yourcommunity in some way; thatcould mean having a coffee withsomeone else on their own, orvolunteering in a localorganisation.

Feel okay about having aquiet day but also set realisticgoals and share in othersachievements. Look out forf a m i l y , f r i e n d s a n dacquaintances. Seek support ifyou need, that’s no weakness.Remember, do yourself afavour. Good mental health isgood for us as individuals andour community.

The Grey Nomads - Part 2

Had it only been two weeks? It seemed like a lifetime. I love my parents dearly. They taught

me so much. They have earned the right to retireand to enjoy that retirement. But why me Lord,why me? I do love them but so much more when thespatial gap is bigger than the generational gap.

Last Saturday they took our children trail bikeriding. Their clothes went straight in the wheeliebin. On Sunday they took them for a hike alongthe banks of the Torrens. Not where there werewalking trails. Oh no, that would have been tooeasy. They had to walk where there was awilderness of vines and trees and mud and unseenponds of water, green, smelly water. Their clotheswent straight in the wheelie bin again.

The day after they had arrived, the old folkserected a portable gazebo on our front lawn. Thelawn was just beginning to green with the autumnrains.

“Our friends won’t complain,” mother said,“and if we think it looks too awful we will borrowlots of pot plants so they can’t see the lawn.”

Then their friends began to turn up.How did the friends know that Mum and Dad

were here? “Oh, we emailed everyone we couldthink of,” Mum told me.

One of the first to turn up for ‘a cuppa andbiscuit’ was the deputy premier.

“We met her in NSW. She was attending someboring conference and we were waiting to go skydiving. The weather was rotten so we went for ahike in the national park instead. Had a good

discussion with her,” so my father told me.Then there was the TV crew that turned up along

with a couple of pretty well known faces.“We met them when scuba diving up on the Reef.

Helped them to get a few shots,” Mother said.All the traffic in the street caused some problems

and the inspector came out to hand out a fewtickets and put up No Parking signs. That lastedthe time it took for a phone call. Seems the mayorand the CEO had met the parents when they wereexploring caves in western Victoria.

Yesterday was spent by them at our children’sschool. The kids must have told the teachers, whothen contacted the old folks and invited them tobring their videos and spent the day at the school.

“Lots of other kids said they were much moreinteresting than their grandparents,” boasted ourchildren last night.

This morning there was a knock on the door. Itwas repeated with some impatience when I didn’timmediately burst out of bed and greet them. I amnot at my best at 5:30 in the morning.

I opened the door to find the glare of the securitylight revealing two parents dressed and brighteyed.

“Just wanted to say thanks and goodbye,” Mumsaid smiling, her blonde curls more blonde thanever in the light.

“Right,” I said and began to close the door, thensnatched it open as the words penetrated my sleepdrugged brain.

“What do you mean, ‘Goodbye’? Where are you

going? What about Alice and her family?”“Oh,” Dad said. “After you went to bed last

night we were reading our emails. There was onefrom the CEO of a shire up in the Kimberley’s.There was a group of us up there when a cyclonestruck and we stayed to help fix things upafterwards. So now they are having a reunion tocelebrate the occasion and say thanks to everyone.We have just over a week to get there. Short noticebut they had lost our email address. So we have togo.”

“Wait! Come in and have breakfast. I’ll callAlice.”

“Okay, call Alice. She won’t be happy to bewoken at this time of day, I can hear her now.Don’t worry about breakfast, we’ve had it. Bequick we’ve got a long way to go and we can’t gotoo fast.”

With much grumbling my family and Alice’swere assembled on the front doorstep by seveno’clock. There was hugging and kissing and tears.The Winnebago disappeared down the street andround the corner with us all waving. Probablythere wasn’t a dry eye anywhere, even mine werevery bright.

I gave one last wave as they turned the corner andsounded their illegal air horns.

“Goodbye,” I thought, “come back soon - butnot too soon.”

Recent changes to the Local Government(Elections) Act 1999 mean that at 1 January

of every election year, all landlords, businesslessees and resident non-Australian citizens willbe removed from the Council voters roll and mustre-enrol to be able to vote.

Sala Exhibition - River Life - Arnold GalleryHey Mannum - Don’t Miss This!

Ihave just been to see this Artexhibition at the Mannum Dock

Museum and it is excellent. I amquite excited about it and encourageeverybody to go and have a look.

SALA is the largest visual artsfestival in Australia with over 500exhibitions state wide and it istotally FREE.

The artworks on display are bySandie Kuehne, Roger Baker, ShaneStrudwick and Barrie Walker. I hadplanned to describe one artworkfrom each of the artists but I foundthis impossible, I liked too many.

SandieKuehne’swhimsical MurrayDarlings (R ed Ha t ladies)immediately took my eye, being aRed Hatter myself. However I wasalso impressed by her beautifultriptych of pelicans, painted inacrylic, hergraphiteand watercolour“Murraylands Fossils” and herdelicate pen and pencil drawings.Also, to my surprise, a sculpture of alizard.

Roger Baker had a lot of variety inhis works, using different mediumsand styles. I particularly liked hislino print “Mannum Ducks”, and anoil “Port Sorrell Tasmania” also

took my eye. His sculptures are verydifferent, I would like to own“Figurehead”. I don’t know about“Saw Thumb”- it could cause someraised eyebrows! Go and have a lookand see what I mean!

Barrie Walker’s paintings are alloils. His paddle steamers areexcellent, also his bird studies. Myfavourite of his landscapes is“Vintage Cottage and VintageChev”. I find it hard to believe thatBarrie is a self-taught artist.

Finally there are a number ofShane Strudwick’s beauti fulphotographic river landscapes inmetallic and gloss prints. I could notmention any by name as they are allstunning. I would be very happy tohave any of his works on my wall, infact I could say that of almosteverything in this exhibition.

Congratulations to the artists, tothe Convenor, Peter Weir andeverybody else involved in producingsuch an excellent, interesting andvaried exhibition.

Do support your local artists andgo check it out. I think you will be asenthusiastic as I am.

talking, she’s not back(mentally!) from holidays yet.This is a serious question, andit’s no excuse to say, “It’s toohard”, just because your bodyis creaking so much these days.(Don’t blame the coldmornings, please. We’re atough lot in the Murraylands.)

Ponder this… some of ourLucky Country’s older citizensmust be dressed and ready forbreakfast every morning of theyear by 8 a.m. They’re notallowed to eat fresh fruit, andtheir poached eggs have to becooked for at least 17 minutes.So says Stephen Judd, chiefexecutive of Hammond-Care ina “scorching” speech to adementia conference in Sydneyin June. He labels thosepoached eggs as “an organicpiece of pottery that’s beenfired and come out of a kiln”.

Could it get any worse?

Judd continues, “Seafood,soft cheese, fresh cut fruit andvegetables and soft eggs areclassified as ‘high risk’ for allaged-care residents, regardless

of their health… Relativeswere happy to see their lovedone engaged in a group activityeven if it were the last thing theresident actually felt likedoing.”

Angie’s Cooking Tips

Leftovers, what can I do with myleftovers? They are too good to

waste. This was put to me last week soin this issue, an idea for using upleftover pasta.

This Frittata recipe is quite flexible;just keep in mind the egg and liquidmeasurements should remain thesame.

Pasta Frittata½ cup chopped onion2 tbsp butter6 eggs¼ cup milka cup grated Parmesan½ tsp dried basil1 cup cooked pasta (cut into 4-5cm

lengths)1 cup tasty cheese¼ cup extra grated Parmesan

Salt and pepper to taste

MethodUsing a heavy based, medium sized

skillet or fry pan (oven proof if youhave it), heat olive oil and butter untilmelted and foamy. Add onion, cookover medium heat until golden brown.

In a large bowl, beat together eggswith milk, a cup Parmesan cheese,basil and season to taste.

Add pasta to egg mix, stir gently.Add egg mix to onions in fry pan,cook over medium heat, lift edges nowand then to let the uncooked egg mixgo to the bottom of the pan.

When egg mix is almost set and stillmoist (5-8 minutes), top withremaining cheese. Place in pre-heatedoven, or bottom rung of a pre-heatedgrill, on medium heat and cook forapproximately 8 minutes until frittatais set, starting to brown and puffed a

little. Serve as soon as possible.Top Tip: If you don’t have an oven

proof fry pan, cover the handle with a‘good’ layer of alfoil.

Switch Up: Left over vegetables upto 1 cup in volume could be added.

No onion? Try some choppedcapsicum. Dried oregano can replacethe basil. The addition of 1 cup offresh herbs lifts the flavourbeautifully.

The quantity of cheeseused in step 4 can bereducedwithout interferingwith the end result.

KESAB Road WatchIn the Bush

Over the past few months we having beenworking to protect and restore a reserve

between Mannum and Palmer, with manyattempts to slow our progress being made.

This reserve contains a vulnerable plant that hasonly around 1000 specimens in this part of theMurray Darling Basin.

To many, native vegetation has no value otherthan for firewood for the campfire or for gardenmulch. But think of the Murraylands with nothingbut dirt and no way to reduce the wind and cold toprotect stock, and stop seed blowing away frompastures. It has happened before and still does,that’s why biodiversity can and must be a part ofagriculture as well as new methods of doing thejob.

Local Action Planning Groups and the like offerassistance with both protection of biodiversityandhelping direct farmers, especially young oneswilling to learn more. There are agencies thatoffer training with new agricultural methods(often at no charge).

As well, subsidies for perennial fodderplantings, protective fencing and windbreakrevegetation are on offer when available.

Sometimes results take time, but it is worthtrying new ideas on a small scale to hedge your

bets for the uncertain game of agriculture.For us it has been difficult trying to protect

small patches of remnant Murraylands as well asa Planet Ark Tree Day revegetation site in theFlinders Ranges. Both sites are mostly unfundedand making do with second hand tree guards, selffunded plant propagation materials and manyhours of planning and volunteer work.Approximately a thousand dollars worth ofseedlings at retail value have been donated to theApamurra project to date.

Thanks to all who have placed a donation in theFlying Doctor’s Tin when they have received asample of local seedlings from us. Many hundredsof dollars have gone directly to the Royal FlyingDoctors from the little blue tins so far. Manythanks to the Eastern Hills and Murray PlainsCatchment Group for the support they offer“Greenies” like us as well as the farmingcommunity of the region. Thanks also to theTungkillo Landcare Group and the Mannum toWellington LAP for helping with new and secondhand tree guards. Special thanks to Robyn, Lisaand their families for their help.

Louis Armstrong - His Music

The Hot Fives and HotSevens are of course the

definitive Louis recordings. Hedid however record with othersbefore those.

In 1923 ‘King’ Oliver made aseries of jazz recordings. Theprimitive technology didn’tallow for the richness of thesound to be captured. Forinstance the drummer usuallyplayed on a wooden block asnormal drums would vibratethe cutting stylus. Usingimagination the richness of themusic can be heard.Armstrong’s first recorded solocan be heard on ‘Chime Blues’recorded on 6th April 1923.

1924 saw Louis working andrecording with FletcherHenderson. Tracks with Louisincluded ‘Copenhagen’ and‘How Come You Do Me LikeYou Do?’

In 1925 Louis recorded ‘StLouis Blues’ and ‘CarelessLove’ amongst others with thegreat blues singer, BessySmith.

Also in 1925 Louis returnedto Chicago and signed arecording contract with OkehRecords. The recordings wereto be made under the name ofLouis Armstrong and His HotFive. The original Hot Fivewere Kid Ory trombone,Johnny Dodds clarinet, LilHardin piano, Johnny St Cyrbanjo.

The Hot Fives was not aworking band. It assembledonly for recordings. They

rehearsed at the Armstronghouse, (Louis was married toLil Harding at the time),recorded the results and wenton with their normal job. It wasat this time Louis changed fromthe cornet to the trumpet.

The original Hot Fiverecordings included ‘GutBucket Blues’ which was usedto introduce the players. Thisdevice was quite common injazz. ‘Heebie Jeebies’introduces Louis and his scatsinging. One story is that hedropped the sheet with thewords and he didn’t want tospoil the recording so hescatted. Louis did not inventscatting but with the popularityof the recording the singingstyle caught on with singersand listeners.

Other significant recordingsincluded ‘Cornet Chop Suey’which became a test piece fortrumpet players; ‘Struttin’ WithSome Barbecue’ which Louiswrote but gave to wife Lil;‘Muskrat Ramble’ whichLouiswrote but Kid Ory named andso got the writer’s credit.

In 1927 the Hot Five becamethe Hot Seven. A tuba playerand drums were added. Theplayers varied. The drummerwas often Johnny Dodds’ babybrother Warren, better knownas ‘Baby’.

By 1928 the Hot Five hadagain emerged. However it wasan entirely new group exceptfor Louis. The others were Fred

Robinson trombone, JimmyStrong clarinet, Earl Hinespiano, Mancy Carr banjo andZutty Singleton drums.

There is a complete set ofrecordings of the Hot Fives andHot Sevens available fromColumbia Legacy (C4K63527) together with writtencommentary.

Louis went on to make manymore recordings. Much isavailable today on ‘el cheapo’labels with no notes of theperformances and variablesoundand performancequality.

One of the best laterrecordings is a Columbiarecording titled ‘AmbassadorSatch’. It is available as a CD(Columbia/Legacy CK64926)and was re-released to coincidewith the century of Satchmo’sbirth. The tracks are liverecordings of a European tourmade by the All Stars in 1956.

Several discs released byVerve and featuring Louis withElla Fitzgerald who called him‘Pops’, and the Oscar PetersonQuartet are worth hearing and,if you like, owning.

One last recording must bementioned. That is his vocal of‘Wonderful World’. If possiblelisten to the version made byRCA Victor on May 26th 1970.There Louis does a spokenintroduction. It sounds sincereand indeed the music makes it a“Wonderful World”. Louisdied on the 6th of July 1971.

Cooking Dilemmas

Dilemma: Some bakingrecipes I have come acrossrefer to ‘cutting in’ the butter.Does this mean I must use aknife?

Solution: Cutting in is abaking technique, mostly usedwhen making pastries orstreusel toppings, and is theprocess of coating flour (ordry ingredients) with a solidfat ingredient e.g. butter. Thiscan be achieved by using 2butter knives (at the sametime in a cutting and foldingmotion), a pastry blendingtool or a food processor. Ifusing a food processor usevery short pulse blitzes untilthe desired consistency isrequired. Cutting the butter inuntil particles about the sizeof peas are formed is whatyou would be looking for.

This process is necessarywhen making flaky pastry.When the butter coats theflour it interrupts the glutenforming, resulting in a flakypastry.

Another technique used toassist in creating a tenderflaky pastry is to chill allingredients and utensilsneeded.

Travel, travel, travel has beenthe theme this month at the

Mannum Golf club with boththe Men and Women travellingto various Open Daysthroughout the MurraylandsandCountry meetings.

The Men have travelled toTailem Bend (4th July), SwanReach (11th July), and Cambrai(25th July) with various degreesof success. Most notable wasMatthewBormann, winning theday at Tailem Bend and SwanReach, which was well done.

The Ladies have also travelledto Tailem Bend, with SandraApplebee winning 2nd place in Bgrade. Lisa Hancock, CathyMorrissey and Hilary Millerparticipated in the Countryweek (20th - 22nd July) which isheld throughout the State.Hilary competed in the BronzeSalver at Murray Bridge. Lisaand Cathy travelled to Willungato compete in the Bronze Plate.Both finished in the top 10 outof 150 competitors in the field,which is an outstanding effort.

We held our Open Days inearly August: Mens on Sunday1st and the Ladies on Friday 6th.

Locally, the Mixed FoursomeChampionships were held onSaturday 24th July with a smallfield. Winners on the Day wereTrevor and Hilary Miller with anett score of 72½. Runners upwere Neil Warhurst and MaryUnderwood.

The Trilogy Financial Groupis sponsoring an Ambrose Daywhich will be held on Sunday8th August. This event promisesto be a great day, with food anddrinks available on course, withsome fantastic prizes to be won.

Deciding to settle inAustralia wasn’t hard

but leaving Canada was. Ittook two tries to settle asmigrants but we did enjoy thetravel.

We now call Australia homeand, at this writing, we haveacreage in the country but it’sbecome a weekender. We arepast keeping up the place andas a weekender it has lost itsappeal. Our grandchildren arepreparing for uni, our son isheavily into his career and ittakes a bit of time to keep a ½km driveway in decent orderand the house yard alwaysneeds mowing. The tractorthat was a source ofsatisfaction now gives usmore sorebones than pleasureand sadly we all came to theconclusion that it was time tomove on. Edgar says he

thought growing old would beeasy but it’s turned out to beas much of a challenge asanything we’ve done.

We are now town peopleand I don’t think I could evergo back to the city. Citypeople always look startledwhen you smile and say“Hello.” Stopping for a chatblocks traffic and gets youannoyed glances as they rushby. And how do you keep upwith the news? I was told thatin Mannum “everyone willknow your business.” I don’tmind, I grew up with that.And mostly the interest isfriendly, even supportive. Acommunity is a nice thing andif the worst I have to put upwith is a little friendlycuriosity I don’t mind. I’drather be noticed thanignored.

W e a c t u a l l y h a v eneighbours, not “occupants”,up and down our street. Thelocal kids wave when I drivein and know I’m a soft touchfor a fund raiser. The bin getsput out even if we forget, andspare fruit and veges findtheir way to our door. Peoplehave been known to ring thedoorbell for all kinds ofreasons; reminding me there’ssomething on, checking to seewhy I haven’t been aroundlately, returning stuff I’veabsent mindedly left aroundthe town. And Edgarwondered why I insisted on adoorbell when we moved in.But then he grew up a cityboy. He’s learning.

I grew up in a country townand here I am feeling stillvery much at home in one.

It’s a different country but thepeople are much the same.The main street was always ameeting place. It wasH u r o n t a r i o S t r e e t ,Collingwood, Canada in myyouth and now it’s RandellStreet, Mannum, SouthAustralia but the ambience isthe same. I read somewherethat there is as muchdifference between countrypeople and city people allover the world as there isb e t w e e n d i f f e r e n tnationalities. As FrenchCanadians would say, “Vivela difference.” (Well, myschoolroom French finallycame in useful.)

At 70 I won’t predict whatthe future will bring. I’velearned that lesson, but fornow, I’m home.

Plans to construct a SkatePark in Mannum are still on

track with the facility likely toopen in late December.

The project has nowprogressed to the stage thattechnical drawings andspecifications are currentlybeing worked on and will forma crucial part of the tenderdocuments, which will bereleased in August. Levels atthe site have been taken to assistwith the placement of the parkand drainage.

It is anticipated that work willc o m m e n c e d u r i n gOctober/November and Councilhopes to hold an opening before

Christmas, if all goes accordingto plan.

“‘A Penny for ‘em.’ Captain Algernon Lacey, late of the Royal Flying Corps, looked across the roomat his friend, Major James Bigglesworth - more often known as ‘Biggles’ - with a twinkle in his eye.”

Ilast heard these words when I was about 8 years old and Iremember the location very clearly.My older brother Doug and I would travel from our home in

Melbourne to spend our school holidays with our relations inBendigo. Doug is blind, so mainly for his benefit, we were readaloud to every night, mainly by Aunty Elv.

She owned a bookshop, known to all as Miss Brown’s Bookshop,and generations of Bendigonians read and enjoyed what MissBrown told them to read and enjoy!

So books were plentiful and in the eveningsDoug and I and our cousins Gillian andKeith snuggled up on the eiderdown onAunty Elv’s bed and listened, entranced, tobooks including “Coral Island”, the Williambooks, Enid Blyton’s “Faraway Tree” and“Five find-outers and dog” series and manyothers. However our favourites were theCaptain W.E. Johns stories about Worrals ofthe WAAFS and Gimlet, the Commando andbest of all, Biggles, our hero.

Aunty Elv had a deep and beautiful voice and those evening hoursspent listening were a joy to us all, never to be forgotten. Sheinstilled in us a love of books and reading and we all became avidreaders.

My brother Doug, with the aid of modern technology, can nowscan books to listen to and he is currently re-reading some of theBiggles books. He appreciates now the war history contained,especially the descriptions of early air combat in WW1. Johns wasa WW1 pilot and based the early books on his own experiences.

Fortunately Biggles, and his chums Algy and Ginger, appeared toage about one year in every four so Biggles was able to fly SopwithCamels in WW1, Hawker Hurricanes and Spitfires in WW2 andeven a Hawker Hunter Jet in a post war adventure.

Some of the vocabulary in the books is a bit dated and some of hisexpressions would cause amusement now, particularly “opine” forthink or believe or “ejaculate” for utter. Otherwise they are veryreadable; in fact, “Great Scott” and “Jumping Mackerel” they areJOLLY RIPPING YARNS.

was well attended. Players camefrom as far as Kapunda, BarossaValley, Murray Bridge,Cambrai, Jervois Branch andsome locals.

President Margot Thomaswelcomed them all prior to theserving of a three course meal.

In addition to playing 500 andBugs a trading table and raffleswere held.

The winner of 500 was MariaOoyendyk from Kapunda, withPeggyBass from MurrayBridgeclaiming the PerseverancePrize.

The Bugs winner was AudreyHarris from Jervois Branch andthe Special Prize went toSharon Nolan, also from JervoisBranch.

Afternoon tea completed theday, bringing the proceeds to$806.

Marketing Mannum

Idivide my time between Mannum andMelbourne, and am therefore, in

Mannum terms, something of a crossbetween a resident and a visitor. Iregularly go to theShowgrounds Market,and with each visit, I notice fewervisitors and fewer stallholders.

It will be a pity if this community eventdies through lack of interest. It is aninitiative which deserves to beencouraged, but stallholders won’t attendif they don’t make enough sales, andvisitors won’t attend if there aren’tenough stalls. I’ve mentioned this to afew local people. They all replied thatthey haven’t been to the market.

Lack of local support for communityactivities is by no means exclusive toMannum. A major advantage thatMannum has over many other small

towns is that it has a large turnover ofvisitors all year round. Lack of interestby residents need not mean the demise ofthe market if visitors make up for them.Local markets are generally attractive totravellers.

Until late July, the ShowgroundsMarket was almost held in secret. Themain road into Mannum from Adelaideand Murray Bridge displays a large andprominent sign board optimisticallyheaded “Coming Events”. It was usuallyblank. This is a sort of anti-advertising,like describing a place as the dirtiesttown in Australia, or listing the publictoilets as a major place of interest. Ablank “Coming Events” board suggeststhat Mannum is, if not blank like theboard, at least dull and boring and host

to nothing. The poor old market neverrated a mention. There was a regularadvertisement for it in front of the warmemorial, but it was small and obscureand probably missed by most visitorsbecause they were concentrating ondriving round the sharp, steep bendwithout hitting anything or falling downto the river.

I would like to see the market marketed,and I wish it every success. Icongratulate those responsible forplacing, at the end of July, what lookslike a permanent ad for the market on the“Coming Events” board. I hope it ispermanent. I hope it will serve the dualpurpose of marketing the market andmarketing Mannum.

On Saturday 26th June 2010 the Social Club held theirannual Pub Crawl. We had a great turn out with around

40 members attending and all having a great time. As wealways have a theme, we went the opposite way to last year’sBlack & White theme and went Fluoro!

The Pub Crawl started off at Beachy’s, where we all boardedBotty’s bus and headed off for our first destination, Dallas’riverfront block at Younghusband, wherewehad lots of yummypizza from one of our major sponsors, Bogans. On departurefrom Dallas’ the peg was released … Simone was the firstvictim when she found the peg taped under her seat.

Next stop was the Swan Reach Hotel, where we held the firstround of our “Rock Off” (Rock, Paper, Scissors) competition.The food was great and the peg was in full flight! We also hada cake for Phil’s 60th birthday.

Our third stop was the Sedan Hotel, where the hospitality wasagain very good. The second round of the Rock Off competitionwas held and we announced the Best Dressed prize for the dayThis went to Janet Grabowski who was so fluoro you neededyour sunnies to look at her!

The fourth destination was the Cambrai Hotel, where we hadsome more yummy snacks, a few more drinks and held the thirdround of the Rock Off competition. At this stage of the trip,many Pub Crawlers had fallen victim to the peg (some morethan others) so I decided it was time to confiscate it! However,someone had brought backup pegs.

The final destination was back at Beachy’s where we finishedoff a fun-filled and action-packed day. The Rock Offcompetition finals were held and this was also won by Janet.
