St. John's Ministry Focus of the Month:

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

The word education usually brings up images of school and textbooks. In a church setting, education often calls up memories of a Sunday morning class. Here at St. John’s, the Christian Education ministry is responsible for continuing the long tradition of excellent teaching and study that takes place on Sunday mornings, but as our mission statement shows, we encourage congregational learning in other ways as well: Christian Education: Foundational, Dynamic, Collaborative, Lifelong As called and empowered people of God, seeking to serve our congregation, the members of the Christian education ministry committee commit to:

• Support faith formation and provide education by providing a strong Biblical and theological foundation for all stages of life

• Seek out and use available current resources to meet the dynamic needs of a changing congregation

• Actively encourage collaboration for inter-ministry faith formation opportunities

• Form, equip, engage, and support faithful leaders Faith formation is lifelong formation, and we offer teaching for every age, from the nursery where volunteers rock infants and play with toddlers to classes whose members count their attendance in decades. We look for opportunities for intergenerational service and fellowship and encourage people to interact up and down the age scale. Because people change, the way we engage God changes too, and Christian Ed. seeks to offer classes and studies that range from Scriptural analysis to daily life applications to church history and current events. We offer tools for daily faith through publications, evening classes, workshops on creating Christ-centered holidays with family, perspectives on our role in the larger church and the world, and fellowship that grows deep roots of connection and relationship. We encourage new teachers, try new things, ask for study suggestions, and create safe places to ask questions. Christian Education isn’t about dull classes and dry topics- it’s about finding an inquisitive, supportive, Jesus-seeking group of people who help each other serve and grow, every day.

ALOHA! This year, our Sunday school Rally Day is all about transitions, and we’re throwing a party to celebrate! We’ll gather in the PLC at 10:00 on August 13 for a Hawaiian-themed snack bar and to install our teachers, bless our backpacks, and learn about the classes planned for the 2017-2018 year. Special highlights will be the launch of our teacher intern program and an overview of events planned to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Since part of faith formation is serving others, we will also collect

food for our Backpack Buddies at Mary H. Wright Elementary. This is a perfect day to invite friends who have been asking about St. John’s.

Ike oe malaila! (see you there!)

Summer Christian Education Opportunities

Kids and Youth Classes

For the summer we hope all children ages 4 through 5th grade will join us for our combined, unique

Summer Sunday School program beginning June 18 which will include independent creativity through

art, crafts as well as engaging God through community service projects. The lessons taught and used

for each child's individual expression will follow Bible stories from the lectionary readings, including

some special studies about Martin Luther for this year's 500th reformation!

Adult Classes

Adults this summer will be able to build relationships and deepen their prayer life though Catching Fire, Becoming

Flame and Keeping the Fire Alive. In these two series, Franciscan Father Albert Haase talks about prayer practices, God’s

will, suffering, forgiveness, temptation, and other topics to strengthen our spiritual lives. We’ll meet in the Parish Life

Center at 10am for a DVD presentation and discussion. Whether you’ve studied these topics before or they’re new to

you, the conversation and information is sure to be a benefit in your walk with God.

Our Wednesday Bible Study this summer will be led by Jim Milligan and Bob Lee. Luther’s life as a monk, reformer,

church leader, and family man will be discussed, as well as the impact of his life and the 5 Sola’s of the Reformation. This

group will meet in the PLC Conference Room at 11am on Wednesdays through August 30.

ENDOWMENT FUND The St. John’s Endowment Fund was established to enhance the

mission, outreach, and ministry of our congregation by providing funding for worthwhile ministries that are outside the scope of the regular church budget. Just as the Word of God is living and active (Hebrews 4:12), the contributions to the Endowment Fund provide a living and active resource for continuing and new ministry initiatives. Requests for funding will be

received both to support the ministry activities of St. John’s, and for ministries outside our walls that share in our love, faith and hope in the Gospel. Please note that it is not necessary that an outreach program or ministry be associated with St. John’s to be considered for funding. The Endowment Board invites you to submit requests for funding by filling out the form, which is available in the church office, at www.stjohns-spartanburg.org/, or from members of the Endowment Committee listed below. Bring, e-mail or mail your completed forms with any support information or material to the church office no later than August 31, 2017. If you have any thoughts or questions please contact a member of the 2017 St. John’s Lutheran Church Endowment Committee.

Choir Clinic Chancel Choir Director Martin Aigner will host a choir clinic in the Parish Life Center on Saturday, August 26th, from 10am-3pm. Bring your lunch and spend a glorious time of music and fellowship before the fall choir season begins.

Anyone with musical interest is welcome!

faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. Colossians 2:6-7

Please help us to grow God's work through the ministries of St. John's by participating in the Growing our Future Capital Campaign. The campaign is being established to help fund the landscaping project and other facility needs of the Church. The goal of the Growing our Future Capital Campaign is to raise $100,000. Contributions should be designated in the memo portion of your check or enclosed in a labeled envelope. Thank you for prayerfully offering your financial resources to help our campus to be an inviting and welcoming place for sharing God's love!

The end of summer means it’s time for PEP Day! Our second collaborative celebration with Pine Street Elementary will take place on Wednesday, August 16. During the school’s Meet the Teacher event, St. John’s will host the families for lunch, activities with the Boy Scouts, visits from the fire and police departments, and active fun with inflatable play structures and water activities. The school PTA is once again serving their teacher luncheon in the Fellowship Hall, as it

provides a friendly space that allows all the teachers to visit and share a relaxed lunch. PEP is a great way for us to be a good neighbor to the school and to show the community that our doors are always open! If you would like to volunteer, please contact Cheryl Pettis or Leslie Connor. We’ll need extra hands all week as we prepare, host, and clean up.

HISTORY IN ACTION or . . . A Blast from the Past!A Blast from the Past!A Blast from the Past!A Blast from the Past!

AUGUST 2017

This month we learn the fifth surprise about Martin Luther from the article, “Martin Luther’s Seven Surprises,” by

Timothy J. Wengert, which appeared in Lutheran Woman Today in October 1992 to commemorate the 475th anniversary of the start of the Reformation. This year, we celebrate the 500

th anniversary and will enjoy his message, which notes the

change in perspective Luther had on religion. We are learning a surprise each month for seven months, concluding in

October.

What surprises many Lutherans about Luther is what he actually taught and how that teaching so excited Christians in his day.

Surprise #5: Leading the Devil by the Nose Have you ever been embarrassed by the question in the baptismal service, “Do you renounce…the devil and all his empty promises?” This seems like a throwback to the Dark Ages!

In fact, Baptism enters us into a battle between Christ and evil, where we stand on the side of the victor who won by losing his life. Luther realized that Christians are often subject to doubts, fears, sin and uncertainty.

These are not merely signs of our weakness, but of the continuing conflict with the devil. In the face of the forces of evil, Luther could say confidently, “The only way to drive away the Devil is through faith in Christ, by saying, ‘I have been baptized; I am a Christian.’” *From Luther’s “Table Talk,” cited in Heiko Oberman, Luther: Man between God

and the Devil (Yale University Press, 1989), p. 105

Pastor Mike's Sabbatical Update: Hello everyone, and thank you once again for this sabbatical experience. I must say that the first half of the sabbatical I had many things planned and everything went very fast. We began July with returning from Alaska, then picking up our kids from Lutherock. Stayed home for a week then went to Orlando. It was great time with family. Also, while there I met with a Lutheran pastor and congregation that helped the community recover in the aftermath of the Pulse nightclub murders. In June I celebrated my 20th year of ordained ministry and at the end of July Carolyn and I celebrated 26 years of marriage. This month we will begin a new chapter in our lives as we move Megan into Lenoir-Rhyne University. Your gift of supporting me in this sabbatical has really come at a wonderful time for me, my family and my ministry. I am very grateful and looking forward to coming back

at the end of this month and sharing with you many things I have discovered about myself and my roles as:

child of God, husband, father and pastor. Pastor Mike

HEALTH MINISTRY Event in September

Life Line Screening, a leading provider of community-based preventive health screenings, will offer their affordable, non-invasive and painless health screenings at St John's Lutheran Church on September 8th. Five screenings will be offered that scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries which is a leading cause of stroke; abdominal aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta; hardening of the arteries in the legs which is a strong predictor of heart disease; atrial fibrillation or irregular heart beat which is closely tied to stroke risk; and a bone density screening, for men and women, used to assess the risk of osteoporosis. Register for a Wellness Package which includes 4 vascular tests and osteoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with our member discount). All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. In order to register for this event and to receive a $10 discount off any package priced above

$129, please call 1-888-653-6441 or visit www.lifelinescreening.com/communitycircle or text the word

circle to 797979. Four screening tests without osteoporosis screening is $139 ($129 with member discount). Members of St John's will be given priority and the

chance to register first. The invitation will also be extended to the community. Please schedule your appointment by calling the number above. If you have any questions, contact Joanne Kopchik at 864-494-1145.

On-The-Go Group on the road again! On Saturday, September 23rd,

The On-the-Group will travel to Charlotte to see the play THE CHRISTIANS. It

will be in the Booth Playhouse at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center where

Rebecca Koon gave an awe-inspiring performance in Lunch at the Piccadilly last year. Becky is not in

this one, but it is again directed by Steve Umberger. The plays asks: What do you believe? Why do

you believe it? And what would you be willing to sacrifice for those beliefs? Those questions drive the

provocative new play The Christians, receiving its NC premiere after

productions around the country. Set in a megachurch in today’s America,

this compelling story revolves around a pastor who challenges his

congregation with a radical new definition of faith they could never have

predicted. Critics have raved about this unique play’s ability to represent all

points of view. Look for ticket information on posters around the church. If you have

questions, contact Rebecca Koon at 864-583-1146.

Reformation Renovation of the Children's Sunday School wing began July 21 and July 22! St. John's volunteers, primarily being our Lutheran Men in Mission and parents whose children's footsteps traverse these halls, held paint brushes, rollers, ladders and screwdrivers! Please thank these folks for volunteering their time and skills with beautifying this space and making it more inviting to our current members and visitors: Leslie Connor, John Dennis, Michael Dohse, Barry and Brenda Ellison, David Holt, Stephanie Hujik, Doug and Sue Kurz, Chris and Erica

McCarthy, Charlianne Nestlen and Noah Wright! This was a fun team of hard workers and believe it or not, it was great fellowship time too! There are more improvements to come in this area and throughout the church. Be on the lookout for emails and announcements where your volunteerism can

make a huge impact!
