One of the reasons we have a council retreat is to spend time with God and prayerfully understand the calling we have received to serve as leaders in God’s church. This year we gathered together at Lutheridge retreat center just outside of Ashville, NC. We got to know each other a little better and how we can work together. We spent some time learning about the 6 Marks of Discipleship (see below), reviewing our 5 year strategic plan and creating goals for this year (see below), we also reviewed the church calendar, gained insight into the call process for an associate pastor and embraced the promises we made during the installation service. Our council president, Janine Wagner, offered some of this information on the Sunday we returned from retreat. I am offering a printed version and thanking the congregation for your continued support of council. Working together, with God’s help and guidance, we can face the unknown future of this year with a great deal of excitement and hope. Peace, Pastor Mike Shackelford

New Christian Education Opportunities from 02/18 through 3/02.
Kids and Youth Classes
Classes for Pre-K through 5th grade are in the downstairs Children's Sunday School wing
below the Fellowship Hall. Our Lutheran based Spark program connects kids with the same
stories they’ll hear in worship each week, so that the lessons are more easily learned and
remembered Each class is tailored to its age-level with caring and fun teachers
and hands-on learning opportunities.
Confirmation Class for grades 6 through 8 are upstairs, above the staff offices. Pastor Mike is leading this year’s study.
High School Students meet in the Youth Room of the Parish Life Center with Corey Carson and Kevin Lageman for
discussions about life topics and current videos.
Adult Classes:
Anxious for Nothing (until February 11th): Doug & Sue Kurz lead a new study of Max Lucado's new book Anxious for
Nothing: Finding Calm in a Chaotic World; a real life look at Philippians 4:6-7 and how it speaks to anxiety, depression,
and stress in everyday life. Join Doug & Sue in Room L11 (below the sanctuary).
Lenten Class - Final Words from the Cross Benji Mills will lead a Lenten session of Final Words From the Cross, a video
and book study of Jesus words as he died. This class will meet in L11 (below the sanctuary).
Alpha and Omega: Alpha and Omega is looking at the wisdom and poetry contained in Proverbs. Join them for a close
reading and rich discussion of the Bible. This class meets in L06 (below the sanctuary).
Contemporary Discussion: Dick and Lori Conn will host this welcoming discussion of current events, opinions, and our
place as Christians in a complex world. Join them for good coffee and conversation. Meets in the PLC Senior Room.
Martin's Table (February 18 - March 2): Moses: In the footsteps of the Reluctant Prophet by Adam Hamilton will be
led by Ralph Wessinger. Be with Ralph as he leads Martin's Table beginning 2/18 in retracing the life of Moses from
his modest birth and rescue as a baby to the courts of Pharaoh, from herding flocks in Midian to leading his people out
of Egypt Using historical information, archaeological data, and biblical text, Hamilton guides us in the footsteps of this
reluctant prophet who grew in his relationship with God and by the end of life had successfully fulfilled the role he
was given. Turn your own reluctance into boldness as you examine the significant challenges facing Moses and how
God shaped his character and life in powerful ways.
The Story: This year-long class will look at the entire Bible as one continuing story of God and his people. Carefully
selected verses from the Bible are organized chronologically and written in the form of a novel from Genesis to
Revelation. Each class features a video presentation and discussion, equally perfect for those new to the Bible and for
those with life-long familiarity. Meets in L12 (below the sanctuary).

HIGHLIGHTS
Minutes for the December 2017 Council meeting and the 2018 Transition council meeting were approved at January 2018 meeting. Highlights follow: • hosted Georgia Southern University students for a week
while they worked with Christmas In Action to help Spartanburg community.
• several events: Christmas celebration, Christmas Eve worship, Potluck breakfast and special one 11:00am
Lessons & Carols service. • Jan. 21st special congregational event with SC Synod
Bishop's Office to help us continue the call process for an associate pastor.

February Brewsky Schedule Join us for fun and fellowship Wednesday evening, February 7th, 7:30pm, at Mezcal Restaurant on E. Main downtown. This will be the only Brewsky outing until after Lent. Wild Women Weekend at Lutheridge March 2-4th Registration is at www. lutheridge.novusway.org/non-summer-adult-family-programs. Limited spaces are available. The theme is “Superwomen” in scripture focusing on Proverbs 31 from the Old Testament and Mary, the mother of Jesus from the New Testament. WOMANS MEMORIAL
An undated handwritten letter entitled “State of Religion in Woman’s Memorial Lutheran Church, Spartanburg, SC” from
the early years of our congregation expresses the nearly insurmountable difficulties that had to be overcome for the
establishment of this community to take place. This was written within a year or two of our organization. Following is an
excerpt from that letter, with the writer’s actual underlinings duplicated. (Recall that until 1948, our congregation was
named “Woman’s Memorial” in honor of financial support by the Woman’s Missionary Society of the SC Synod.
Intriguing to think of the Upstate of SC as a mission field…yet of course it still is.)
It is not easy for anyone away from the actual scene of our labors to fully measure the real situation confronting our mission pastor in the beginning of his work in Spartanburg. Here he found a few Lutherans who had been away from the church of their childhood so long that it seemed almost like a dream of the past to hear of the faith of our fathers. Naturally their interest had subsided with the passing years, and all hope of this coming of a Lutheran Church had long since departed. Besides, the members had but slight, if any knowledge of each other, and therefore could not be expected to have any oneness of feeling, or unity of purpose. But this is not saying that our love for the old church had died for it had not. Note, also, that few of our members, scattered as they were, had ever had any active experience in church work; nor were any of them rich in the goods of this world.
Now to gather, unify, and build up a congregation under these circumstances, and in a city in which our church was really unknown, was not so easy as some may imagine. Nor is it less noteworthy that we live entirely away from the stream of Lutheran life. But, with all this, the seemingly impossible is being accomplished. We are becoming constantly better known in the community; our church is slowly but surely coming to the front; and we are growing in public favor and esteem. The people are finding out the fact that we belong to a great church, and represent doctrines and principles which mean much to the world, and to the salvation of men.
It is cause of rejoicing that there is growing interest among our people, and that we have evident signs of a quickened spiritual life. At our last communion twenty-seven were at one time around the Lord’s Table, and our Reformation Service met with special favor.
The congregation was organized on September 28, 1902 with 17 adult members, so the number of twenty-seven is a 58%
increase. (Only confirmed adults communed at that time.) We seldom recall the original difficulties in drawing together
strangers to create a common goal. Only the help of the Holy Spirit could have brought about our congregation despite
these odds. We thank God that we are here!
First Communion Class with Pastor Mike A First Communion Class will meet for children and parents on March 10th, from 10:00am-2:00pm in the PLC Conference Room. The children and their families will partake of communion at the Maundy Thursday evening service in their own chalices that they will decorate at Hearts of Clay. Each Wednesday during Lent (following the Ash Wednesday service) we will gather together to explore how the wounds of Jesus affect our wounds. The offerings for our Wednesday services and evening meals will go to the 40 Days of Giving campaign- Accompanying migrant children- by the ELCA World Hunger. (see article at
bottom of page) Please make the time to explore more in depth how Jesus, the wounded Savior, binds our wounds, heals us, and restores us.

Many migrant children, youth and families face the challenges of a complex immigration system, limited employment opportunities, and little support. Through ELCA World Hunger and the ELCA’s AMMPARO
(Accompanying Migrant Minors with Protection, Advocacy, Representation and Opportunities) strategy, our church provides food, clothing, and care to meet their immediate needs. 40 Days of Giving is a way for ELCA members to support this church’s hunger and poverty ministry during Lent. Our Lenten Offerings will
be dedicated to helping this effort. Please make checks payable to St. John's and designate on the memo
line Lenten World Hunger.

FEBRUARY IS AMERICAN HEART MONTH Heart disease is the leading cause of
death for men and women in the U.S. Every year, 1 in 4 deaths is caused by heart disease. The good news?
Heart disease can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions.
A healthy lifestyle includes the following:
1) Eating a healthy diet.
2) Maintaining a healthy weight.
3) Getting enough physical activity.
4) No smoking or other forms of tobacco.
5) Limiting alcohol use.
So have a heart! JOIN US FOR OUR BLOOD DRIVE ON BLOOD SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 25TH.

participation from those ages 20-60. You have lots to give! Come and join St. John's for
our first Blood Drive of 2018 on Sunday, February 25th from 10:00am - 2:00pm. The
Bloodmobile will be in front of the Parish Life Center. Sign up sheets for appointment times
will soon be available. Let's have a BIG SIGN-UP this year to support the community! You
may sign up online for an appointment at: thebloodconnection.org/donor/auth/signin Click on
the red 'sign up' tab and Follow the steps to schedule your own appointment. You can also schedule through
the coordinators available after each service. You can always donate on "Blood Sunday" even if you are not
scheduled. However, those scheduled will be drawn first. If you register on the website, you can check when
you are scheduled or obtain other information. Please do not sign up if you are not going to be there. PLEASE
remember your blood card or driver's license. You must have a form of ID. Anyone under 16 must have

St. John's Prayer Chain The St. John's Prayer Chain is made up of a group of volunteers who intently pray for members or family and friends of members who are in need of divine intervention. A central leader phones other key leaders who then phone volunteers on their list to pray for the individual in need. This chain provides a dedicated and confidential way of receiving prayers other than the published prayer list. The Prayer Chain is looking for new volunteers who can quietly perform this service from their homes. If you are interested in learning more about the Prayer Chain, you may call the new leader Linda Turner at 864-579-9950 or email at [email protected]. YOUNG FAMILIES Spread the love! The Young Families will gather in
the Fellowship Hall following worship on February 4th, at 12:00PM to share
lunch! Lunch will be followed by decorating cookies and making Valentines.
These Valentines will be distributed to residents at RoseCrest Retirement
Community and to Spartanburg School District Offices. If you would like more

We have already had a big snow with freezing temperatures. More cold weather will return. Our drive to collect warm outerwear in good condition is continuing all winter. Please prayerfully consider donating a coat to help keep someone warm this winter. Gloves, hats, and scarves are helpful, too. Look for donation drop-off bins in the Fellowship Hall and also in the PLC. Coats will be donated to Greater Spartanburg Ministries. Keep someone warm this
winter by donating your extra coats and jackets.
Coffee & Fellowship: Isn't it nice to share a bit of conversation and a
treat with a hot cup of coffee following worship services? This is a wonderful time to catch up with old friends and make new ones. The Circle groups do a wonderful job filling several Sundays monthly for the traditional coffee time. Volunteers sign up for the time following the contemporary service. Open opportunities are still available for both services Coffee Hour sign ups are on the kitchen door of the PLC and on the board in the Fellowship Hall. Take a
chance to be of service and sign up to provide a simple snack and arrange coffee for a warm fellowship time. Also, if you are interested in helping and being a part of the Fellowship Committee please contact Conny Linder at 921-0615 or [email protected]. We'd love to hear your ideas!
WORSHIP FLOWERS Our Flower Chart is slowing filling for 2018, but there are still open dates to provide flowers for Sunday worship. Flowers not only enhance the beauty of the worship experience, but they are a wonderful opportunity to remember a loved one or celebrate a special event. The two vases are very reasonably provided by Russ Gaffney Florist for $45, including delivery. They are yours to enjoy or give to someone following the worship service. Supplying flowers is not in our budget and depends on members signing up for dates on the Flower Chart. If no one signs up - there are no flowers. Please take the opportunity to provide flowers for the worship services by signing up today!
Call Committee for an Associate Pastor
On January 21st, during the 11am worship service we installed the Call Committee who will be prayerfully searching for a candidate to bring to St. John's council and congregation to be considered for the Associate Pastor position.
The most immediate task that lays before this group is the compilation of paperwork needed to help potential candidates know more about our congregation. As the process continues the chair of the committee will keep the council informed as to their progress. When we, the congregation, gathered together for the special event in the PLC with Pastor Ginny Aebischer, we were informed as to the importance of confidentiality for this process to be respectful and successful.

SOUP KITCHEN SERVANT TEAMS St. John’s has teams of persons serving at the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen on Forest Avenue, Fridays from 10:00am until 12:30pm assisting with food preparation and serving, straightening up food storage, stocking shelves, helping in the “children’s room,” cleaning up, etc. We are in need of more volunteers. If you want to spend a rewarding 2 hours helping prepare food to serve some hungry folks, please contact any of the soup kitchen servants listed below. The Servant Teams serving for June are:
