President’s Corner Jean Johnson We cherish our yesterdays and dream for our tomorrow: Our 95 years of

"yesterdays" gave us the honor of being Grand Marshal for Antioch's July 4th parade. Past presidents--Florence Pedersen, Alvera Morgan, Nancy Zitkus, Carol McMullen, Linda Valentino, Maureen Fremgen--and I rode in 3 convertibles. We were led by Barb Gray in her "speedy" wheelchair. (Barb- you are an inspiration to all of us) Thank you! There have been many "firsts" for us this year, which constitute change for our tomorrows: 1. First annual meeting/luncheon, not a closing luncheon. 2. First "thank you" luncheon at the Lehman mansion featuring 2 "crafters" -- Marcia Getty and my daughter, Laura Meyers. 3. First Arts and Crafts sale. 4. First Taste of Antioch 5. First August meeting - Ice Cream Social and Bingo We are NOW truly a year-round club, which interested many other clubs at convention. A special "thank you" to Lynne, Linda, and all the "summer volunteers"! Finally - after 95 years we have a Mission Statement: The mission of the GFWC Antioch Woman's Club is to provide intellectual growth and unity of effort toward civic improvement--a philanthropic organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service! ACCOUNTING: With the transition from "yesterdays" to "tomorrows," we have done the audit, processed excess funds from last year, and created a budget for this year--in that order! Economically and legally, we should not be spending excess funds on a guess or before the audit. Thus, many of the items that were normally taken from excess funds are now budgeted items. If after the audit in 2016 there is money left over, we will then make additional donations. This is reflected in our treasurer's report. Please review the report to approve at our September meeting. Thank you, Candy, for a great job and keeping us well informed and "on track"!

Our dream for TOMORROW is to increase our membership so as to be able to continue our philanthropy. We look forward to a full year of activities, programs, fellowship and FUN! AND, best of all we have a new portable speaker system with 2 wireless mikes so everyone will be able to hear!!!! Membership / Mentoring Program Marcia Getty Welcome to the 2015-2016 AWC club year. I hope your summer was spent enjoying time with family and friends. It’s hard to believe that cool nights and snuggling by the fireplace are nearly here! Please introduce yourself to our new members at the Fall Luncheon in September and help them to feel welcome. They will be wearing nametags with a pink ribbon attached so they are easily identified. New Members: Peggy Kellen 25022 W. PR Report Cindy Erexson Hello Ladies! Just a reminder to continue checking our website: www.antiochwomansclub.com for updates on all the activities, donation collections

and committee special events. You can also access our current newsletter on the home page using the link provided. If you are new to our club or not receiving emails from AWC [email protected], please give your e-mail address to our membership chairman, Marcia Getty.

Social Committee Karen Wehrheim & Betty Chornoby Thanks to all hostesses for

pitching in during the year. The food at our meetings has been spectacular! You will find the flyer for our September 9 Fall Luncheon to be held at Twin Lakes Country Club later in this newsletter. Please be sure to get your reservation to us by September 1st! At the end of this newsletter you will find the flyer that explains the duties of our hostesses. You will also find a list of all the hostesses for the upcoming year. Please make note of your assignment. If your name appears & you are unable to attend, you are responsible to either exchange months with another individual or pay $15.00 to one of the Co-Chairmen.

Message from Our Treasurer Candy Luzar Later in this newsletter you will find the excess funds report and the proposed

budget for the upcoming year. Please look the budget over and be ready to vote on it at our September meeting.

Public Issues Susan Straley Carolyn Crabtree Community Service Projects Public Issues has three projects

planned for the fall, in addition to the collections of coupons for the military and the “Support Our Troops” program. We look forward to your participation and generosity in the projects we sponsor. The focus of these activities is assisting those less fortunate than we are and showing our appreciation to military personnel and their families. At the Fall Luncheon, we will be collecting “Socks for the Soul.” Crew socks designed for warmth in the upcoming winter months are being requested. These will be donated through Open Arms Mission to needy families. All sizes are needed for men, women, children and infants. October’s collection will be for Save-a-Pet. Items needed are towels, blankets, paper towels, small paper plates, window cleaner, dog toys, cat toys, Science Diet dry food (feline and canine), Friskies and Fancy Feast canned cat food, Milk Bone and chewy treats, and Tidy Cat kitty litter (also Feline Pine) In November we will pass a basket for cash donations to be used for Christmas gifts for the VA hospital. Special note of thanks: This past month Bonnie Bakutis has been fostering dogs for Save-a-Pet at her home in Antioch. These dogs were rescued by Save-a-Pet from Chicago pounds on the day they were to be euthanized. Because of the canine flu that has been spreading in the Chicago area, these pups could not be held at the Grayslake shelter. Bonnie stepped in and rescued 4 dogs on separate occasions, socializing each of them for a two-week period of time. Two of the dogs were adopted immediately when they returned to Save-a-Pet, and the other two are eagerly waiting their forever home. Kudos for Bonnie's humanity saving these 4 sweet dogs from being put to sleep and helping them find new homes.

Focus on Community Safety This quarter’s safety topic is “Tips to take the sting out of outdoor gatherings.” The number of yellow jackets peaks in late summer and early autumn. About 1% of the population is allergic to bee and wasp venom. Each year 50-100 people die nationally from bee and wasp stings. The symptoms of a severe reaction to a sting are:

Difficulty breathing Swelling of the lips or throat Faintness, dizziness, or confusion Rapid heartbeat Hives Nausea, cramps, and vomiting Deterioration of blood pressure or

circulation (shock) Tips to keep yellow jackets at bay include:

Empty and clean trash cans regularly to eliminate food sources

Avoid wearing perfumes or other scented products

Avoid brightly colored or patterned clothing

Use cups with lids for drinks Don’t make sudden moves if one lands on

you. If it won’t fly away on its own, gently and slowly brush it off with a piece of paper.

Coupons Sigrid Brueggemann It is time to cut coupons again! I noticed that the coupons from the Sunday newspapers are out

dating in August. Our Military families still can use them 2 months after that date. Have fun cutting coupons while watching your favorite shows on TV. Please sort them into 5 categories: Food, Household Products, Health and Beauty, Baby Products, and Pets. Count the coupons, count the hours you spend, and include your name so that you can be credited for the hours you worked. Happy clipping!

International Outreach Carolyn Van Patten I'm sure you ladies have rested over the summer months and are ready to start making quilt tops,

putting them together and the finish tying. We will be meeting on the 4th Monday of each month except December, starting on September 28, 2015 at the Meeting House in Antioch from 9 to noon. See you there. Over the summer, Jean Hailing, Mary Giamo and I completed and shipped 30 kids’ hospital gowns for Operation Smile. Thanks to Mary and Jean. At our May meeting we completed 10 quilts for the Arts and Craft booth in June. Some of you ladies (back in the day) will remember the "Birthday Bank and/or book". So treat yourself and make a donation at the monthly meeting in which you celebrate your birthday. The collection will go to Heifer International so they can buy a goat, sheep, chickens, etc. More to come at the September meeting.

Operation Afghanistan Karen Potter

Please bring items for our troops overseas and bring them to our meetings in October, November, January, and April. Our troops can use most everything we use in everyday life but in smaller size: toiletries, candy, packaged drinks, small packages of cookies, crackers, munchies-- you get the idea. Please remember the female troops and the items that they can use: tampax, deodorants, and powders. We thank you for your generous donations as they are very much appreciated.

Education Committee Mary Kay McNeill

Sheila Eisen

We noticed the aisles have been filling up with school supplies, a sure sign that school bells will soon be heralding the start of a new school year. With that thought, we are continuing our volunteer reading program at the W.C. Petty Elementary School, and we need your help! If you are going to be a returning volunteer who goes into the classroom to listen to a child read, or if you are going to try this out for the first time, please note we will have sign-up sheets out at our September and subsequent monthly meetings. If you already have a teacher you prefer to work with, please let one of us know right away. Your commitment by signing up is for one-hour time slots for ONE month, equaling 4 hours total. Some fabulous volunteers choose to make this commitment from October through April. We go weekly for one hour either on a Tuesday or Thursday. There are morning and afternoon time slots depending on the grade level. Grade levels in this school are second, third, fourth, and fifth. Please consider volunteering for this interactive time. The teachers and students are always glad to see us!

We awarded three scholarships totaling $3,500 to three students graduating from Antioch and Lakes High Schools. We were also pleased to have one of our students awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Illinois GFWC! If you would like to be part of our scholarship committee, please let one of us know. The time commitment is during the months of April and early May when we receive the scholarships from the two high schools.

If you have any ideas for our committee, let us know.

Conservation Karen Noland Once again I would like to thank our gals who worked so hard on May 2nd for our Adopt-A-Highway cleanup. Sally Rodgers

was kind enough to fill in for me in leading the cleanup so I could take a short vacation. Sally is so enthusiastic and did a great job along with Debbie McGuffin, Jean Johnson, Judy Grubich, Patsy Foley, Mary Kay McNeill, Carol Janousek, Jane Larson and two of our new members, Barbara Mitzel and Andrea Macek. We really appreciate your efforts ladies! I will continue to collect your #6 Styrofoam for recycling. My SUV was loaded when I took ours to the facility in Highland Park, and while there I noticed a container for recycling old clothing and materials. This would include items too old or worn for donation to A Safe Place. As long as I am making the trip, I think we should collect this too if you would like. GFWC also has reminded us of ReCork.org, which recycles wine corks to make playground materials, etc. I know a lot of you enjoy a glass of wine now and then, so let's see how many we can collect at our September meeting. ComEd is now paying $50.00 for old refrigerators that they will pick up at your home. Also, there is an "At Your Door" household hazardous waste and electronics pickup service for residents of Lake Villa Township. At no extra charge they will pick up items not belonging in the trash or recycling. This would include paint or automotive products; household, swimming pool or garden chemicals; or electronics. Call them Monday thru Friday at 1-800-449-7587 or email [email protected] to schedule a pickup. Remember, we can each make a difference in our environment.

AN EXTRA SPECIAL THANK YOU A HUGE thank you to Bob Fletcher--Lynne's husband! If we never had an "auxiliary " member, we do now! This summer, Bob set up and took down our new tent for several events, he decorated cars for the parade and helped out the entire day, and he worked 4 hours per night for 4 nights for the Taste of Antioch (so that our club could receive $500 from the chamber). Kudos also to Terry Wehrheim (Karen's husband) and Tom Fremgen (Maureen's husband) who also worked the Taste for us! On behalf of AWC, we thank you, Bob, for offering your time throughout the year—not to mention your financial support! God bless, Jean Johnson

Art Committee Judy Schieck Thanks to all of those generous bakers who donated delicious baked goods, cakes

and cookies for the 2015 Student Art Show on April 17th. I apologize for the delay in showing my appreciation. I sort of got waylaid by an unexpected medical situation and have been recovering ever since. Thanks to all the thoughtful members for their get-well cards and thoughts. This really bolstered my morale, and I am grateful for your support. It really has made a difference in the recovery process. There is not much going on now in the Arts &Crafts area. I’ll keep you informed. Have a wonderful summer (if it ever really arrives).

Home Life and Health Patsy Foley I am happy to return this year as chairperson of the AWC Woman’s Club Home Health committee.

As the summer is flying by, hopefully we have had the time and good health to pursue and renew the relationships we have with our friends. Maybe we have made new ones. When we talk about the love we share with family and friends, we should think about how these relationships help us to maintain good health and help us to find balance in our bodies and our minds. If you are lucky enough to know the love of a pet, you will understand the meaning of unconditional love. A dog never judges, never withholds affection, never ignores us. To our dogs, we are the most important people in the world. It matters not if we are fat or skinny, beautiful or ugly, rich or poor, old or young. Dogs do not see the color of our skin. Nothing matters to our pets but us. They want nothing more than to make us happy. Let’s learn from our pets and be an “angel in disguise “ to everyone we meet. Let’s have a happy, healthy year!

Card Ambassador Jackie Vos Wow, where is our summer going so fast?? It's a good thing we're all so very active and busy. However, there are some of us struggling with health and family

issues and in need of a "Little Cheery Note" ! Please call or e-mail me with information about anyone who can use some encouragement so we can tell them we are thinking of them in their difficult times. A note from friends means the world to all of us. My e-mail is the same but my phone number is new this year: 206-920-4223

Correspondence (aka Thank You notes) Debi McGuffin Hi Ladies, I hope everyone is having a great summer,

weather notwithstanding! Thank-you notes continue to come in, and I just wanted to keep you up-to-date on them.

Open Arms Mission (2) – one for donation of cereal and $76; one for donation of toothbrushes

Hostess Committee Duties Members are enlisted for each meeting.

These members are responsible for the comfort and enjoyment of the members attending.

Head Hostesses (2 each month)

• Notify your hostesses one week before the meeting to remind them of their commitment and to outline their duties; perhaps mail or e-mail them a copy of this page early and then call them a few days before the meeting to remind them.

• If a regular meeting, organize committee members to provide refreshments and

décor. The club is providing ALL paper products-including tablecloths. We are also providing the silverware. The hostesses shall, if they wish, bring a centerpiece and the food Items they wish to provide including coffee, tea, sugar and cream. Cost of coffee tea, cream and sugar should be divided among the hostess committee. (Keep your receipts) We use the church's coffee pot, which takes about 1 hour to brew.

• If short on supplies, you will find a stash of extra items marked Antioch Woman’s Club in the kitchen area of the church. Do not use items not marked AWC.

• Keep receipts for items purchased; cost will be divided among committee members.

• Plan to arrive an hour and a half before the meeting to set up and to stay late in order to clean up tables. Enlist help from committee members. Please do NOT start cleanup during meetings or programs.

• Secure someone from the committee to give a “thought of the day.”

• If a luncheon meeting, request committee members to provide a $15 donation to be used for centerpieces instead of a dish for the table.

• If a luncheon meeting, select someone to present the “prayer before the meal” and a “thought for the day.”

• At a luncheon meeting, be prepared to hold the drawing for the centerpieces after the meal.

Hostesses

• Bring assigned food items for regular meetings. • Arrive early at the meeting in order to help Head Hostesses set up. • Plan to stay late to help with cleanup. Please do NOT start cleanup during

meetings or programs. • Be prepared to share in the cost of coffee, tea, cream, sugar, etc. • If you find you cannot attend your assigned meeting, FIND A REPLACEMENT

AND INFORM THE HEAD HOSTESS WHO THAT WILL BE. Be sure to let your replacement know what you have been assigned to bring and do.
