to cover the cost of repairs not due to negligence. Adjustments will be made for students who qualify for free and reduced lunch prices.

Student laptops will be distributed in August in the weeks before school. The schedule will be:

Monday, Aug. 19 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. ►

Tuesday, Aug. 20 from 2 to 7 p.m. ►

Wednesday, Aug. 21 from 6 to 9 p.m. ►“Our students and teachers have

been actively using technology in the classroom for many years now,” CVHS principal Michael Thornton said. “One-to-One Learning is the logical next step in continuing to provide tools and

supports that improve overall student achievement.”

One-to-One Learning will not completely replace traditional teaching methods and interactions. Instead, the new technology invites teachers, students and parents to enhance communication, innovation and creativity. The one-to-one environment opens the door for additional discovery, experimentation and problem-solving in and out of the classroom, and provides a platform to transfer learning from teacher-centered to student-centered. Skills such as teamwork, accessing and submitting assignments, research and applying critical thinking strategies can all be improved using the one-to-one framework.

The movement to develop a one-to-one learning environment at CV has been around for a number of years, and the school board has been steadily acquiring the technology and infrastructure to support the initiative.

Should you have further questions about this initiative, please contact the CVHS Main Office at 717-397-5231 extension 2470 or the CV Technology Department at extension 2401.

to School Night with the Barnstormers, Homecoming and the district Bonfire, spirit rally and fireworks, sponsored by Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD).

As the campaign moves closer to its goal, the CV school board has directed the district’s architect to prepare a final design for stadium renovations. District financial advisors presented a plan to the board showing that the district could borrow money to fund the project without affecting the district’s debt levels or reducing current programs.

The campaign has already raised enough money to install a synthetic turf field, the centerpiece of the project, that will benefit the district’s band, field

hockey, football, lacrosse, soccer, track and field and cheerleading programs. Demand for

the stadium use is at an all-time high.

Additional plans call for improving the stadium’s safety by renovating the visiting bleachers and replacing the home bleachers, press box and concession stand.

“At this time, the school board has not made any formal decisions regarding the project,” CV superintendent Gerald Huesken said. “It’s important that all community members continue to support the Buckskin Boosters to make this project a reality for our students!

The Buckskin Boosters’ “Sound Mind, Sound Body, Sound

Future” capital campaign is nearing $1 million in pledges, as the district’s architect works on final designs.

The campaign, which began a year ago, has moved into a “community” phase, in which all members of the community are invited to participate.

An example of the kind of community fundraising programs that will be part of the campaign is the first-ever Yard Sale @ CV, which took place on June 29 at CV High School. The event raised $1,000, which was matched by $1,000 from an anonymous donor.

The second-annual Yard Sale @ CV is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, June 28, 2014.

What’s New at CV in 2013-2014?Full Day Kindergarten, Tech Upgrades

Amid these challenging economic times, Conestoga Valley continues

to make targeted investments in educational initiatives that directly benefit students. Thanks to sponsors, grants and one-time revenue sources, the district is able to expand early childhood education and increase instructional technology resources districtwide.

CV will begin implementing these and other new initiatives when school returns on Monday, Aug. 26:

Full-Day Kindergarten: ► Conestoga Valley’s transition to districtwide full-day kindergarten is complete. All kindergarten students will be placed in full-day classes. An option is available to parents who want their child to attend half-day kdg.

12 New Teachers: ► CV is welcoming energetic and talented new faces into elementary, middle and high school classrooms. Look for a blurb on these new teachers in the November issue! CV is also welcoming Mrs. Phyllis Haverly Flesher as director of administrative services.

More iPads: ► There will be 420 iPad minis for use in K-2 classrooms (a student-to-device ratio of 2:1), 120 iPads for RtII K-6 and 40 iPads for K-6 ESL.

Technology Upgrades: ► The district made significant upgrades to its technological infrastructure over the summer. CV technicians installed a 10 GB backbone network districtwide and a Meraki wireless

system in each building. All CVHS classrooms will now have 600 MB per second wireless access, among 200 access points across the district.

Point-of-Sale System: ► Elementary and MS parents will have a convenient way to pay for and track lunches for their children. A new point-of-sale debit system, Meals Plus, will allow parents to pre-pay for breakfasts and lunches and view online what their child(ren) have been purchasing. Students will use their student ID number to charge purchases to their account. (Lunch prices are increasing by 10 cents districtwide.)

CV, Hildebrandt Offering Pre-K Counts Program for CV Families

Another exciting early childhood education

opportunity is now available in Conestoga Valley.

CV and Hildebrandt Learning Centers are now accepting applications to enroll eligible families and their children in a free Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts early childhood education program.

A state-funded initiative that enables school districts, Head Start providers, child care centers and nursery schools to deliver high-quality pre-kindergarten to three- and four-year-old children, Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts is available at no cost to eligible families. Children must be between age three and the entry age for kindergarten and living in families earning up to 300 percent of the poverty level (family of four with gross income of $70,650). Children may also be impacted by other risk factors, such as English Language Learners, family in the child welfare system, or having disabilities or developmental delays.

There are 20 full-time and slots available for Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts in CV. Though slots fill very quickly, there is a waiting list and space

becomes available regularly, so families are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible.

Families interested in enrolling their children in Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts should contact Karen Sullivan at 717-656-4037 to discuss the application process and to arrange a visit to tour the facility and experience a quality early childhood classroom in action.

Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts classrooms are all required to have qualified teachers with the education and expertise to teach young children, small class sizes, a curriculum aligned with the Pennsylvania Early Learning standards, regular assessment of children’s progress and program performance reports. The percentage of four-year olds with proficient academic and social skills tripled to 82 percent after participating in PA Pre-K Counts programs in 2012-13.

CVSD Bus StopsPosted for ’13-14 School Committees Keep Parents Engaged

Once again, CVSD is seeking parent volunteers to serve on district

committees for the 2012-13 school year.Volunteering for a committee is an

excellent way for parents to provide input into the programs that impact their children’s education. It is also an opportunity for parents to get to know CV administrators, teachers and staff, as well as other CV parents.

District administrators are conscious of the busy schedules typical of today’s parents. The committees generally require only a monthly commitment and chairpersons set beginning and end times for all meetings.

An electronic sign-up form is available on the district website and can be accessed by clicking the link to the right.

Hard copies of the committee sign up forms are

available in each school’s main office.

Committees forming this year are:District Student Transition Team•Drug and Alcohol/At-Risk Issues Task •ForceDistrict Technology Committee•Business Roundtable•Stadium Complex Capital Campaign•Building Parent Advisory Committees•

More information on these committees is available by clicking the link below.
