KITCHEN & GARDEN PROGRAM

The Year 5 and 6 students were very excited to commence classes

this semester. In the first weeks we discussed expectations, safety,

hygiene, dish washing and clean up procedures and students

undertook a knife skills assessment. We also made placemats to use

on the tables. Our first venture into cooking was to make pancakes.

These proved to be very popular AND delicious, especially when

topped with a choice of jam, choc chips, cinnamon, sugar and our

very own lemons grown in the orchard!

NMR HOCKEY 7’s

NMR BOYS/MIXED SOCCER FINALS

On Monday August 12th, our EVPS soccer team will compete at the Northern Metropolitan Regional Finals at John Fawkner

College. There are two pools of 3 teams playing off. The winner of each pool will play off in a grand final. The grand final winner

will progress to the State Finals. We wish Bale and the team every success. Go EVPS!

HEALTHY FOOD SNACKS

Cut up pieces of fruit are more likely to be eaten as opposed to whole pieces. Cut up fruit at meal times and for snacks, or place it in your child’s lunchbox cut up . The fruit will also be easier to manage and far less messy!

Kids – ‘Go for your life’

Why should students drink water throughout the day? Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration. By the time a person is thirsty they are usually already dehydrated to some extent.

Children rarely drink enough during break times at school and often forget to drink unless reminded. Allowing and reminding students to drink water in class increases the likelihood that they will drink more. Drinking often, especially before, during and after physical activity is the best way to stay hydrated.

How much water should children drink?

The recommended daily amounts of fluid for children and adolescents are:

5 glasses (1 litre) for 5 - 8 year olds

7 glasses (1.5 litres) for 9 - 12 year olds

8-10 glasses (2 litres) for 13+ years * a glass is 200 ml

More water is needed if children are exercising or sweating due to heat.

Platypus killed by litter in Darebin Creek

My name is Therese and I’m a Ranger along Darebin Creek.

Last week we heard the sad news that a platypus had been found just above Northland Shopping Centre, along the Darebin Creek that was entangled in litter. It had a rubber band around its neck, packing straps as well as fishing line that prevented it from feeding. This is very sad as we have worked hard to get these rare creatures to return to our urban waterways. They have only been spotted in the creek twice in 10 years! You can help by picking up litter in your school grounds and on your way to school. Litter that goes down the drain is on its way to your local creek. Rubber bands as well as hair ties are one of the worst litter types as they easily wash into the drains in your school and in the street and into our waterways. Platypus become entangled when feeding. Any litter that is round and has a diameter of eight centimetres or more is a hazard to platypus. It is recom-

mended that you cut rubber bands and hair ties or any round litter before disposing of them in the bin.

Other ways you can help? Organise a clean-up day at school or join a clean-up group such as Darebin Creek

Sweepers or a Friends group. We can also visit your school. Thanks for helping your local wildlife.
