August 2012 Volume 23 Issue 8
The church has a tremendous opportunity before us with the change of our Sunday School time
to 9:15 a.m. and the worship time to 10:30 a.m. With the time change, we need to invite and
welcome individuals and families to our worship, fellowship and ministry. I believe we have
relationships with many people who will find it more convenient to worship at a later hour.
Who might be interested in such changes in time? I think of the dechurched. These individuals and families
have virtually quit attending church. They have been hurt, disappointed, or alienated. Some of them have
grown apathetic in their faith and they have simply fallen away due to lack of care, involvement or interest.
Some of the easiest people to reclaim to our Lord’s church are the dechurched. I want to encourage you by
letting you know that we have had three conversations in the past week with former families that have
attended our church who are talking very positive about coming back due to the time change.
I think of the unsaved. These individuals have never placed their faith and trust in Jesus as Lord. Most do
not have the habit of getting out early on Sunday to attend worship. In fact, many have told us that our
former worship times are too early for a Sunday. I believe many of them will consider coming to worship
with a later start time.
What are people looking for in a church? They are looking for people with a genuine faith exhibited through
love, ministry and friendships. I am confident they want to see the power of God’s grace through our
redeemed and changed lives. This will give them evidence and hope of a living God who makes a difference
in our lives.
Is there a place for them in our fellowship of believers? We are launching a new “Care and Involvement
Ministry” on August 5th. Hopefully you will begin to see a difference through our First Impression Teams
(greeters) and new Sunday School class leadership.
Each adult Sunday School class is being asked to enlist a care leader, outreach leader and ministry leader.
Each position has a job description and training is being provided. The care leader facilitates appropriate
care responses to absentees, hospitals patients, and families in bereavement. The outreach leader provides
information to the Sunday School class for inviting guests to the class. The ministry leader gives opportuni-
ties for ministry to their class from time to time.
We have many facets to the Care and Involvement Ministry. We will continue to introduce you to each of
them in the coming weeks and months. The objective of the Care and Involvement Ministry is to create a
culture that invites, welcomes, and ministers to newcomers and church family alike. We desire to become
church where everyone senses the presence of God through our love, fellowship and ministry. Steve Boyd

August brings to an end an amazing summer of Bible Schools, mission trips, camps and other faith-building activi-ties in the Kid Connection ministry. It also begins an exciting year of Sunday School, Kid Connection Church (children’s church), AWANA clubs and other discipleship opportunities for preschool (birth–age 4), younger elemen-tary (grades K-2) and older elementary kids (grades 3-5). Our church has new Sunday School and worship times beginning August 5th. Sunday School will begin at 9:15am and end at 10:15am. Kid security check-in will take place in the lobby of the Family Life Center. Parents will receive a security label for each child and check in for Sunday School and Kid Connection Church. This station will be attended from 9-9:20am for those arriving for Sunday School and from 10:15-10:40am for those arriving at worship time. The station will still be open for those arriving later but will require that parents use the self check-in and get a security label for their child. This label will be required to check your child out of Sunday School and Kid Connection Church. Parents should check out their children ages 3-5th grade from their Sunday School rooms beginning at 10:15am to attend the first part of worship as a family. All children should be picked up no later than 10:25am to prepare for worship time, which begins at 10:30am. Children birth thru age 2 will remain in nursery care with worship hour workers checking in by 10:20am. Preschool and elementary kids will be dismissed from family worship around 11am to go to Kid Connection Church. Two preschool and one elementary helper will be at the back of the sanctuary to meet your child and escort them as a group to their classrooms. They will have ID badges so you will know who is the adult in charge of caring for your child. This allows preschool parents to remain in the worship service and everyone to go to their church area in a secure and orderly manner. Children will be checked out from preschool church on the second floor and elementary church from the double doors to the Fellowship Hall beginning at 11:45am. The outside door by the kitchen facing the gym will remain locked for security reasons. The same security label will be required for check-out as with Sun-day School. All children should be checked out of church no later than 12pm. Thank you in advance for your patience the first few Sundays in adjusting to the new schedule and traffic flow. These changes will allow us to better care for and teach your children about Jesus. Wednesday AWANA clubs will begin with a kick-off party on August 15th. AWANA is an acronym, which stands for A Worker Approved and Not Ashamed. This is an exciting program of discipleship through Bible study, worship, games and missions. There will be clubs for children age 4 through 5th grades. There are special club activities throughout the year. For more info, or to volunteer to help in this ministry, please contact me or our new commander Mike Moreno, also known as Commander Moose, and let us know of your desire. There will be special training session for all AWANA workers on Sunday, August 12th at 5:30pm in the Fellowship Hall.

Adventure Club is accepting registration for our After School Program and Preschool
Program. We have 2, 3, and 5 day 3-year-old program with Before School and Extended Care
available. We only have a few spots left in our 4-year-old program, so come by soon to hold
a spot!!
Our Summer Program is coming to an end very quickly. I would like to share some of the ac-
tivities the children have participated in! We have gone on several fieldtrips. Our second trip
was to the Louisville Science Museum. We will definitely be doing that again next year!! AC
has been working with the Simpsonville Park and they offered three camps for our AC kids in
June. All of the AC kids have been going to the park daily except in the case of bad
weather. The kids have really enjoyed the fun activities planned at the park!
AC enrichment programs began this summer with dance and piano lessons. The AC Dance Kids will be performing at
the "Back to School Bash"! We will begin flag-football, dance, piano, music, and art enrichment programs this school
year. Please support our Back to School Bash. Signs up are at the kiosk in the lobby.

COMMUNITY
Summer has just begun but much has been happening! Worship We were able to get a projector installed at the back of the room for the people on stage, choir, etc. Thanks to Creative Image Technology out of Shelbyville who installed it for us!
I am in the initial stages of planning for seasonal Christmas music and I’m looking forward to how the new schedule changes may encourage others from the community to start attending, which would hopefully mean we could share the gospel with them in a fresh, corporate way during that family-time of year. When choir starts again at the end of summer, make some time on a Wednesday night to come sing with us and get involved!
Let me encourage you to come prepared on Sunday mornings for our corporate worship time. You can prepare yourself and your family by making sure you have personal worship time through the week; read God’s word and listen to what He has to say to you; spend time in prayer and praise before you set a foot out your door; be thinking of the message series and where we’ve been going over the past weeks and months. Sunday morning cannot be the only time you schedule God into your life, and it shouldn’t be a time where you are sitting as a viewer. We are all the church, and however you need to express your devotion to God, I encourage you to do that.
Missions I’m sure Shari and Jon will share in the newsletter about their experiences with missions for kids and students, but
overall it has been an inspiring and successful summer of missions already! Who would have imagined that we would have so many students and adults head to Alabama in the heat of summer to help people in need and share the love of Christ, or that our youngest ambassadors of Christ would be able to serve women in need in Nashville?
Ken Hyde’s team that served Mountain Community Fellowship in Paintsville, KY, was ministering the same week that the other team was in Alabama. This church is a fairly young church plant in a poor area of town surrounded by a mo-bile home park that is known for its drug activity. The church is committed to seeing the gospel penetrate that area and that God would be glorified among the people! SBC has helped them in the past and seen God work. In Ken’s own words: “We had a budget to complete the flooring in the foyer, drywall five rooms, purchase and install fire doors, purchase and install 30 can lights, paint five rooms and the foyer and feed 14 tired and hungry workers. WE DID IT.” Pray for the pastor Jason Hutchinson and his wife Jennifer as they lead the church to do bold things in Paintsville and in Haiti where they also minister.
As I type this, there is another team in Inez, KY, led by Linda Otterback through Eastern Kentucky Sonrise. They are working and ministering with Haven of Rest and other local ministries. Haven of Rest is a ministry that serves the visiting families at the Big Sandy Federal Prison located on the Johnson/Martin County line in Eastern Kentucky. Pray for the minis-try that happens there on a daily basis and that Christ is proclaimed among the prisoners and their families. I know that we will hear of the many wonderful things God did in Inez with this team!
We have had an idea for a while now of a ministry umbrella called “Serve60” that would encompass all of the local ministry that we do and hope to do for all the communities along Highway 60, starting with Simpsonville. SBC has been ac-tive in ministry in many ways and through different organizations through the years, and we praise God for that! We would love for the community around us to see our church as people who love and care for them in the name of Christ, and that’s what Serve60 is all about.
We will have an opportunity to do that through our parks system on August 3 for a community Simpsonville Back-to-School Bash that our children’s ministry and Adventure Club will be sponsoring and leading at the Simpsonville park. It will be a time where we offer free bouncies and games for kids, and booths will be set up to help parents navigate through some of the things they need to know for school and the community. We will sell concessions, and the money that is collected will go toward school supplies for kids in the school system who need a helping hand.
Let us know if you can help by serving that evening or by donating towards the concessions. You’ll find a list of the needs in another box in the newsletter or in an upcoming bulletin. This needs to be a time when SBC is permeating the com-munity with the light of the world!
As I write about this, I am reminded of people who are doing it now. God has greatly blessed Simpsonville Baptist for years now with a committed couple who epitomize the ideal of servant evangelism: Ed and Shirley Ragan. They have served in many capacities through the years and are always ready to give and give and give, whether it is to the people at Colonial Hall or the students at Whitney Young or the residents of local apartment complexes or the myriad of other ministries they serve. Thank you Ed and Shirley

Serve 60 is a ministry initiative to support local
community needs. Highway 60 runs from East to West
and divides the county North and South. SBC has served
in a myriad of ways and places during the past three
years. We are very excited to continue this much needed
ministry this Fall, as we provide avenues for Sunday
School classes to involve themselves and their families in
service to our community.
SERVE 60
Wow! What an awesome week at camp. I am writing this article from the “J Café” at
Jonathan Creek. We have had an incredible week so far, and I know that God is up to some-
thing BIG within our student ministry. Please pray for our students and the decisions they
have made. Pray for our students to be united in Christ and that they will be bold in their
witness to their family and friends.
The summer is coming to an end, and the school year is just around the corner. As we
look forward to the ministry that will take place on our school campuses, I encourage all of
our church family to find ways to serve in this upcoming school year. There are many admin-
istrators, teachers, and staff from our schools that need your prayers and support. If you are
looking for an opportunity to serve, let me know and we can plug you in.
Thank you so much for being a church that supports the student ministry. Thank you
so much more for the overwhelming support that this church has shown Bobbi and me. You
guys are awesome, and I look forward to the work God is going to continue in our lives and
community.
Serving Him,
Jon Caranna

WOMEN’S MINISTRY
W.O.W. Book Club
Women of the Word will be starting the book "A Lineage of Grace" by Francine Riv-ers. This book is a compilation of the five books in the best-selling series "A Lineage of Grace." The book shares the stories of the five unlikely women who changed eternity.
Tamar, betrayed by the men who controlled her future, she fought for her right to believe in a loving God. Rahab, a women with a past to whom God gave a future. Ruth, who gave up everything, expected nothing, and God honored her. Bathsheba, her beauty stirred the passion of a King, her pain moved the heart of God. Mary, all eternity had been waiting for this moment and she responded in simple obedience to God's call.
The book is available in electronic form and printed. The first ten people to sign up before August 19th will receive the book for free. You, must, however, participate in the book club to receive the book. Our first meeting will be Monday, September 24 at 7pm to discuss Tamar. We will continue to meet on the fourth Monday night of each month at the home of Amy Griggs.
