DNA analysis of Betty Hill's dressproductive, but inconclusive

    By Phyllis BudingerChemical Analyst

Frontier Analysis Ltd.The January 2004 issue of theMUFON UFO Journal pre-sented the results of an exten-sive analysis w hich I did on five sam-plings of material from the new dressBetty Hill w ore during her 1961abduc-tion.This dress had suffered discolorationalong the top half of the dress, especiallyin the underarms, and on the bottom ofthe dress. Four swaths from the outsideof the dress were examined. These included three sw aths from dis-colored areas and a control swath froman area that was not discolored. Alsoanalyzed was a swath of the interior lin-ing, which had a stain. It was reported that the three outerdiscolored dress swaths had sufferedchemical attack on both the dye and thefiber. These swaths are coated with abiologically derived material w hich ismostly protein and a small amount ofnatural ester type oil.In part, some of these materials hadsuffered degradation over t ime (40years) . It was found that these sub-stances are concentrated on the exte-rior surface of the dress, showing theirorigin was from an external source.Th e lining stain contains a differentprotein material and some na tural ester,wh ich did not chemically attack the dyeor ma terial. It also originated from anexternal source.

All natural bodily sources, which mayhave originated from Betty, such asurine, perspiration, and vomit, wereclearly ruled ou t.The resu lts led to some speculations.Betty's description of a "most unpleas-ant" odor on the craft, along w ith pres-ence of the protein sub stance and natu-ral oil, led to the conjecture that the craftoccupan ts' n atural body elimination ofoils/respiratory agents m ay have trans-AUGUST 2005

Chemical analyst Phyllis Budinger, standing, and the late Betty Hill examine th e dress that Hillwore during th e 1961 abduction.ferred to the dress on contact. Also, I did not think the deposited sub-stances on the dress directly caused thediscoloration. It w as probably from natu-ra l biological growth that grew on thearea of contact after th e abduction.I felt that there w as a remote possi-bility that some of the captors' DNAmight be on the dress. How ever, judging from the dress his-tory, I did not know if any intact DNAwould remain after this amou nt of time, especially w ith the indication of som edegraded protein, whic h suggested thatit might have suffered biological attack. But it w as w orth a shot.D NA analysis w as done in the latterhalf of 2004, and I received a report w ason Feb. 22, 2005. This analysis w asdone on the three discolored, outsideswaths and the stained lining.

The biochemists w hodid this work went the"extra mile," incorporat-ing the mos t moderntechniques to enhancea n y D N A f r ag m e n t s .They m ade a project outof it.[This is the samegroup of scientists whodid the DNA analysis ofthe "alien hair" recoveredin the Peter Khoury casein Aus tralia, as describedin the July issue of theJournal.]I also enlisted the aidof a DNA specialist, D r.M., to review th e report. She does not know thebiochemists w ho did it.Her c o m m e n t s : "Ifound the analysis to bepretty good and quite in-fo rmat ive . They ap-peared to be very care-ful with the DNA extrac-tion process to get all they could fromth e samples they had to w ork with."I did not tell Dr . M. that th e reportdealt with a UFO abduction case. Iffact, I don' t even know if she's inter-ested in the UFO ph enomen on, or evenknows about the Hill case.On th e l e f t s l e e v e a l p h aproteobacterium D N A w a s found. D r.M. relates: "These are bacteria that arefound in soils an d water. The bacteria

could be picked up anyw here. If the dresswas on the ground, some of the bacteriacould have gotten there very easily."I found he r observation q uite interest-ing because, from the location of thebacteria (the left sleeve), if Betty w asw earing the dress she w ould have to bein a prone position-flat on the ground atsome point. This is highly unlikely. There is only one time we know thedress w as "on the ground." This w as

when the dress w as removed from B ettyinside the craft an d thrown crumbled onthe craft floor.Clearly, some of these bacteria couldeasily have been from soil/dirt on thefloor, brought in on footwear worn byBetty or the escorts. The abduc tion tookplace down a dirt road. Follow ing is theD NA sequence p rofile:Uncultured Alpha Proteobacterium( swathe left sleeve). On the skirt front only a small DNAfragment w as isolated, w hich was notvery definitive. The best we can say isthe DN A is mam mal origin. The frag-ments suggest human, mouse, or bovine.I suspect th e f ragment is human.TheDNA sequence profile follow s:H u m a n ribosomal DNA/ Mousegene for 18S/ Bos taurus externaltranscribed spacer, partial sequence:18S (mid-section).On the right sleeve u nderarm w e seehuman DNA. This is not Betty's. Igavethe biochemists a sample of Betty'sblood for DNA comparison. However, what w as found was DNAfrom someone of African extract. Sow e speculate th at this is from Barney.Barney m ay have been escorting Bettyat some time during that weekend , leav-ing some of his DNA deposited on thedress.

If so, it is most interesting that theD N A w a s still intact after all of theseyears. Following is the sequence pro-file.Unknown H u m a n mitochondria!se -quence ( right sleeve) H omo sapiens iso-late YYM22 D-loop. partial sequence:mitochondria!TITLE: G enetic Structureof Hmong-Mien Speaking Popu lations inEast Asia as Revealed by mtDNA Lin-eages1The D NA analysis of the lining stainidentified it as spider blood of the genuscoelotes terrestris, which is comm on tothe New Ham pshire area, and I suspectsouthern Canada. There are three suc h spots on the lin-ing on the back of the dress. So it ap-pears Betty could hav e sat on a nest ofspiders. It's difficult to say w h e n it hap-pened.Kathy Marden, Betty's niece, relatesthat hou rs earlier Betty had a hotdog in

    Swath #1

Swath #3Canada and sat at a picnic table to eatit. It is a good probability the contactcould have occurred there. Otherw ise,it could have happened sometime du ringthe event. The DNA sequence profilefollows.Coelotes terrestris 18S rRNA geneDNA Analysis SummaryThe outer discolored areas of the dresshave an assortment of DN A fragments. These include bacteria, probably hum an,which could be from m any people han-dling the dress over the years, and prob-ably Barney's DNA.2 The lining stain iscomposed of spider blood.SpeculationsMy original speculations regard ing thesubstances coating the discolored areasof the dress remain. I suspect respira-tory agents from the captors. Time hadtaken its toll on the deposited materialsand prevented positveconfirmation. It would appear trace remnants ofsomeof the original materials did remain, such as the soil bacteria. This wouldsupport Betty's account of the dressbeing thrown on the craft floor. Theevent occurred in a rura l area on a dirtroad. D irt could have been tracked in byfootwear worn by Betty and the craftoccupants. And finally w e know at some pointduring the w eekend Betty sat on at leastthree spiders (a nest perhaps) . She satat a picnic table several hours before the

event to eat a hot dog. So it possiblycould have happened there. If not, the probability increases tha t itoccurred in an unremembered incidentduring the event. Clearly the chemicalanalysis, the DNA analysis, along withthe ripped lining and zipper show s some-thing bizarre happened to Betty's newdress on the night of Sept 19,1961. Thisdress was reduced to a rag as a result!Acknowledgementsl am grateful for the help of Bil lChalker for putting me in touch with thebiochemists w ho did the DN A analyses. And of course, I thank themicrobiolo-gists w ho made th e "extra effort" andprovided in-depth DNA information. They know who they are. Meteor watchers and UFOsA classic mismatch

    D an Wright

By Dan Wright"It's a bird; it's a plane; it's ... aschool offish? Lake degassing? A jet-tisoned airplane tank? These of-ferings wereth e m o s tp rom inen t lyd i s cus s edposs ib i l i t iesduring a two-week periodin Apr i l andM ay w hen av o l u n t e e rgroup of me-teor watchersp o s t e dt h o u g h t s o ntheir internetforum (meteorobs.org) in response toan intriguing inquiry abou t a half-cen-tury rold event.W e 've all g r o w n w e a r y of thehaughty Big Science attitude towa rd theUFO subject. But those principals ofacademia and industry have reputationsto protect, and so are expected to showskepticism.Does that same snoo ty posturing ex-tend to segments of the citizenry w homerely dabble in one aspect or anotherof the sciences?A 60-year-old w om an nam ed Lindaha d harbored suspicions all her lifeabout the true nature of something shewitnessed as a young child. Finally, she decided to write a letterto the A m e r i c a n Meteor Society(AMS)-an organization devoted to (1)measuring the intensity of the annualmajor and minor meteor showers alike, and (2) describing to one ano ther in ex-quisite detail the occasional fireballstreaking through the heavens.Linda's email to the AMS was quiteout of the ordinary, so it offered outsid-ers a chance to assess how the meteorwatchers think on their feet. The textof her message:"In 1952, when I was 8 years old,my family lived in a house on a hill

over look ing T ow nl ine L ak e inLake view, MI. I was sitting on thescreened porch when I heard a loudsplash."When I looked up, I saw a largeround area of the lake boiling. I wasfrozen with fascination. The boilingarea looked to be perfectly round. It wasapproximately 50-75yards from shore(it's hard to judg e distance across thewater), and the round boiling area w asapproximately 30-40 feet wide."The boiling circle drifted to the leftabout 20-30 feet from where it had be-gun as if something was drifting dow nto the bottom of the lake at an angle. After watching it for several minutes, the boiling slowly stopped."Would a meteorite cause water toboil like tha t if it fell into a lake? Wouldit have cooled off enough to stop thewater from boiling in only a few m in-utes? Would a meteorite cause the wa-ter to boil in a perfectly round p attern?"Could a meteorite hitting earth bethat large and not cause any destruc-tion if it fell into a lake? I have alwayswondered what it might have been, andnow, 52 years later, I remember the in-cident like it was only yesterday an dam still perplexed by the incident."Importantly, Linda had not actuallyseen the object that entered the w ater, and when she w ent inside to inform he rmother after the boiling stopped, shemight have missed any concluding se-quence.But she was clear that a loud splashhad first attracted her attention , plus shehad offered details on the size and slowmovement of the boiling circle overseveral minutes.Meteor watchers who posted com-ments were in agreement that, what-ever caused the incident, it was no t ameteor.Given its likely entry speed in thethousands of miles per hour, a chunkof rock or metal sufficient in size to ef-fect a con t inu ou s 30-40 circle ofbubbles on the water 's surface wouldundoubtedly have first caused an enor-

A sampling oftheir remarks:"My highly uneducated guess wouldbe that what (the woman) witnessedwas an instance of lake degassing,w h e r e i n b u i l d u p o f m e t h a n e ( abyprod uct of the decomposition of or-ganic matter) and/or CO2 reaches acertain pressure point, allowing th egas(es) to be spontaneously released en

masse from lake-bot tom sediment .Such an event occurred on a muchlarger scale in 1986 on Cameroon'sLake N yos , killing over 1700 people.".This hypothesis (a lake version ofsw amp gas) ignores the loud splash thatfirst drew th e girl's attention.A second meteorobs p osting agreedwi th the not ion of carbon dioxidebuildup: "I believe the CO2 is in solu-tion much like the CO2 within a sodabottle before opening. After the pres-sure is released, the CO2 gas bubblesrush to the surface. Whatever hap-pened, it surely doesn't sound like ameteorite is at the root."The degassing idea, however, didhave one detractor: "Just wan ted to signin for a moment to say I agree that it isextremely unl ikely to be a meteor. However, I don't think it's C O2 gas, either. There w ould have to be a sourceof CO2 gas (usu ally volcanic), and thelake w ould have to be deep enough to'cork' the bott le with hydrostat icweight."Enter the fish, compliments of afourth meteor enthusiast: "Anothertheory is that she saw a fish fingerlingschool escaping from a predator. I haveseen it and it looks and m oves like shedescribed. It is also transient in thatmany fish don't school w hen larger andreally small fish stay in the shallows."

This hypothesis requires that the girlmisidentified the w ater's roiling actionfrom flapping fins for the bubbles sh einsists were seen. And finally the inconsiderate pilotnotion: "For what it is worth, in the 50sthe Air Force pilots u nde r certain flightsituations jettisoned belly tanks-emptyor otherwise-on what seemed to be aregular basis. Wh en possible they wereto be dropped over water. Sometimesaccidentally."At this point the intrepid UFO re-searcher entered the fray.In pertinent part, my posting read:"There is another possibility, which inthis case might be m ore plausible thananything derived from the annals ofw eird science. The y ear 1952 hap penedto includ e dramatic and persistent ap-pearances of UFOs."Numerous mi l i t a ry documents ,since acquired via the Freedom of In-formation Act, reported pilot chases,

uncorrelated rad ar targets, and repeatedin t rus ions o f a i r space a round thenation's Capitol . . . ."FYI, scores of eyewitnesses overthe years are on record as having ob-served metallic disc-type vehicles en -tering lakes and ocean w ater, m any ofwhom further described a bubbling onthe surface presum ably related to heatgenerated by the saucer 's exterior. Many of those persons further wit-nessed the reappearance of the disc asit emerged from underwater and flewout of sight."The next day brought some inevi-table derision, borrowed from the 18 thcentury Bri t ish phi losopher DavidHume: "That no testimony is sufficientto establish a miracle, u nless the testi-mony be of such a kind that its false-hood would be more miraculous thanthe fact which it endeavors to estab-lish." Gosh, I felt really put in my place.Fortuna tely, the witnes s herself cameto . my rescue. In a follow-up letter,Linda wrote:"I w ant to thank everyone very muchfor their speculations as to wh at I mayhave witnessed on Townline Lake in1952. While the lake w as stocked w ithbluegill and bass, I don't think it was aschool of fish, as it would have beentoo far away from shore for the smallerfish to school together.

"I have done a great deal of fishingin my life, and have seen many schoolsof fish being chased by predators, an dit did not look the same. Not petroleum derivativesUFO odors suggest hydrocarbons fuel

Thomas M. Olsen, M.S.Retired Nuclear Engineer (UK)

Abstract: Odor descriptions in 16close-encounter reports are summa-rized and attributed to low-temperatureoxidation prod ucts of three hydrocar-bon fuels.NO 04 from atmospheric nitrogenfixation is discussed as another odor-ant.Odors are usually not experiencedin UFO sightings, since the object mustbe nearby, and the witness must bewithin the dow nw ind dispersion plume.

Even in close encounters wi th discUFOs, only about one out of three casesincludes perception of odors.Witnesses generally report an unfa-miliar, nauseating, pervasive and op-pressive smell, pungently irritating tothe m ucosal tissues of eyes, nose, andthroat.Depending on the magnitude of in-tegrated exposure, immediate effectsm ay include dizziness, upset stom ach,an d vomiting. The odor may still be noticeablehours later, from th e lungs and on theskin, w hich may peel. Severe exposuresmay be followed by temporary loss ofappetite and low blood lymphocytecount, and m ay necessitate hospitaliza-tion.1In a representative selection of 52close encounters w ith disc UFOs, in-cluding the 16 with odor which arenoted explicitly here, and 36 otherswithout odor,2 there is no significant sta-tistical correlation between occurrenceof odor and most other common fea-tures-including soun ds, smoke, haze ormist, colored glow , electromagne tic ef-fects, or sighting duration.Duration is evid ently statistically in -significant, as witnesses in several briefencounters noted imm ediate visibilityof copious vapor em issions, to whichthey attributed the reported odor.3Witnesses close to the UFO are sta-tistically som ew hat mo re likely to sensean y odors em itted by the UFO.48

In some of the CEII cases, odor atth e landing site is not detected u ntil th eground traces are inspected immedi-ately after th e sighting. The relative wind direction is unfo r-tunately not stated in m ost UFO reports,an d may be responsible for the appar-en t absence of odors in the majority ofclose encounters. In four of the 16 sightings w ith odor, the witnesses did note a distinct hiss-ing sound . This was not heard in any ofthe 36 typical close encounters with-ou t odor.A provisional ex planation for theodor evolves from literal interpretationof the specific odor descriptions, assummarized in Table 1, and from con-sideration of reported electrom agneticeffects of UFOs.15Thus, with the exception of ozone,

. w hich sometimes is misinterpreted asburning sulphu r, the specific odors re-ported appear to be from oxidationproducts of hydrocarbons: methyl al-cohol, me thyl benzene, and benzene.Evidently these are somehow avail-able in the UFO's vicinity, perhapsthrough venting or incomplete comb us-tion.It is significant that they are not pe-troleum derivatives; me thyl alcohol ismade from w ood, whi le the two ben-zenes are o btained from coal.On this planet, at least, these sourcesare m ore likely to be available in laterstages of technological developmentthan petroleum. The reported electromagnetic phe-nomena from UFOs are sufficient toprodu ce the necessary oxidizing agentsin the imm ediate vicinity. Th us, ozoneis expected in a region ionized by staticelectric and magnet i c fields, and bymicrow ave and optically visible elec-tromagnetic energy. Moreover, thecharacteristic yellowafterglow of active nitrogen,16 visible inspite of the quenching effect of oxygenin th e air,17 is described by some wit-nesses.18T he active nitrogen fixes oxygen to

produce N O (unstable), N O (oxidizesto N O 2 ) , N203 (also unstable) , NO 2 an dN 205.The latter oxide is a wh ite, crystal-line solid below 30 degrees C (86 de-grees F). Thus, only NO 2 is consideredhere, in addition to ozone, as an effec-tive oxidizing agent. The fact that N 204 is used as a fueloxidizer in contemporary rocket tech-nology is ignored in the UFO contextsince, as discussed abo ve, the oxidiz-ing agent appears to be produced out-side of the U FO as an unavoidable con-sequence of the electromagnetic field.

In summary, consider ing the re-ported characteristics, UFO odors areattributed to externally produced oxi-dizing agents, ozone and NO^ ,andtheir reaction w ith methyl alcohol, me-thyl benzene, an d benzene: While itmay be difficult to accept th e implica-tion that hydrocarbons are used as anenergy source in disc UFO s, and w aste-fully too, th e reported descriptions ofoccasional black smoke em ission fromdisc UFOs must be recognized as fur-ther evidence.22Propulsion using the implied hydro-carbon fuels presumably requires atmo-spheric oxygen fo r primary combus-tion. This assump tion tends to support"mother ship" reports, suggesting themore com mo n, disc-type UFOs cannotoperate o utside Earth's atmosphere.Notes and References1. Secrecy, UFOs, and the deathof the American Republic

    Richard Dolan

By Richard M. DolanOne ce rtainly hears a lot these daysabout "American fascism." Certaincommentators like to point ou t that fas-cism w as a distinct historical develop-m e n t t h a tevolved from theE u r o p e a nwreckage afterWorld W ar One.S ome ma i n -tain that to callwhat is happen-in g in America"fascism" is ad i s s e r v i ce tothose w ho livedu n d e r H i t l e r ,M u s s o l i n i , orother dictators. It's true that there are major differ-ences here today with certain featuresof those regimes. There has been noopenly acknowledged coup d'etat tow hich one can refer . But the changesto America have yet been profoun d.I believe that the Jacobin-styled revo-lutionaries w ho run Am erica these dayshave learned an important lesson fromthe past: that the best revolutions aresilent.Manage the media, manage the othermajor institutions of power, and you canhave your w ay about almost anything.Y ou ca n change the structure of soci-ety at the m ost profound levels, as longas you keep the old appearances. I callthis invisible fascism. But my main quarry fo r this paper isno t empire, not the covert influence ofbig money, no t globalization, not the co-option of w hat was once an indepen-dent media, no r even fascism per se inAmerica. There is another disease eating aw ayat America. It is something which re-ceives nearly no attention, even fromthose people w ho think and care abou tsuch qu aint issues as republican virtueand freedom. That is that matter commonly re-ferred to as UFOs and the cancerousA UG US T 2005

Editor's NoteThe initial portion of this articleoriginally discussed in some detailDolan'sconcerns with what he feelsis a move toward "American fas-cism" an d various activities of thegovernment, such as the Patriot Actand the activities of the governmentrelated to 9-11.As this was not directly relatedto UFOs, most of this material was ,with th e author 's permission, not in-cluded in the current edited article. This additional material is avail-able on the author ' s websi te atwww.keyholepublishing.com.

effect of UFO secrecy on the Ameri-can Republic.Of science and politicsThe development of invisible fas-cism in America is of such historicalsignificance, you migh t ask, "w hy talkabout UFOs?" There is no shortage ofculprits, so why bring in the lunaticfringe?Conversely, there are also UFO re-

searchers w ho wan t no part of politicalanalysis interfering w ith their field ofstudy. This is a scientific issue, theymaintain. Introducing political perspec-tives just m uddies the waters . A nalyzethe evidence, kno w your facts, and stayobjective. But the UFO topic has importantpolitical im plications. W e cannot affordto ignore them. One of these is the dam -aging effect UFO secrecy has had onour society. It is an issue that intimatelyaffects pub lic policy, national secu rity, and our very freedom .Indeed, as I will argue, the topic ofUFOs and the extreme secrecy con-cerning them w ill determine a signifi-cant course of our civilization's future.Reality of UFO phenomenonUFOs are not fun and games, theyare not delusions. They ar e real. Thephenomenon has involved real technol-ogy, doing real things that are not sup-posed to be possible.MUFON UFO JOURNAL

About the AuthorRichard Dolan is the author of UFOsan d the National Security State (2000),w hich covers the period from 1941 to1973. He is currently completing thesecond volume, 1974 to the present.Dolan did undergraduate work atAlfred University in history, English, and philosophy, earned a scholarship toOxford , and did graduate work at theUniversity of Rochester in political sci-ence. He has spoken at several UFOc o n f e r e n c e s , i n c l u d i n g M U F O N ' s2002 an d 2005 symposium s.This technology, since at least WorldW ar Tw o, has engaged in a confronta-tional and provocative manner withU.S. m ilitary forces on m any occasions. It ha s involved both air space viola-tions an d alarmed responses, and haselicited the concern of some of the high-est ranking m ilitary and intelligence of-ficers in the country.W e know this because, for a rela-tively brief period in America's history(primarily the late 1970s and into someof the 1980s), the Freedom of Infor-mation Act enabled researchers to ob-tain official documents from govern-ment agencies which clearly demon-strated this. Not that FOIA is officially dead to-day, but it has had its ups and downsover th e years. As far as obtainingUFO-related information, FOIA's mo-ment of glory w as long ago, in the post-W atergate and post-Vietnam era. Thus, agencies such as the CIA,DIA, FBI, and pick your alphabet-soup

That is, d ocuments that describe utterlyawesome military encounters with th eunexplainable.Taken individually, such FOIA docu-ments do not prove the existence ofUFOs as something "not us." After all, even military w itnesses can mak e mis-takes. Radar can be faulty or misinter-preted.But, taken as a w ho le , th e releasedFOIA docu men ts provide a large bodyof evidence relating to serious militaryencounters with UFOs. After yo u readthe first fifty of these, yo u start to w o n-der. Let's review a couple of thesedocuments. The 1949 Kirtland documentWe have, for instance, a docum entfrom Kirtland Air Force Base in NewMexico from Jan. 31, 1949, directedto the USAF Chief of Staff. There w as a flurry of UFO activitygoing on in New M exico at this time. The docu ment in question described yetanother of these sightings from the pre-vious day, seen by about 30 people. Thedocum ent states:"Estimate at least 100 total sightings.AEC, AFSWP, 4th Army, local com-mand ers perturbed by implications ofphenomena... . All appear to be sameobject at different points in trajectory.Unless instructed to contrary this of-fice will make all out investigation with

view to location of impact point if any."All those agencies were "perturbedby implications of phenomena." Yes,indeed. I would be perturbed, too.On the same day that the Kirtlanddocument was issued, Strategic AirCommand sent a memo to FBI Direc-tor J. Edgar Hoover. It stated that the matter of UFOs w as"considered top secret by IntelligenceOfficers of both the A rmy and the AirForces."A 1950 Confidential M emorandumwith the heading, "Flying Disks." Thisme mo is remarkable, and I w a n t toseparate each sentence from one para-graph, so that you read it carefully:The 1950 Hanford document."Since 30 July objects, round inform, have been s ighted over theHanford AEC Plant."These objects reportedly wereabove 15,000 feet in altitude."Air Force jets attempted intercep-

tion with negative results."All units including the anti-aircraftbattalion, radar un its, Air Force fightersquadrons, and the Federal Bu reau ofInvestigation ha ve been alerted for fur-ther observation."The Atomic Energy Commissionstates that th e investigation is continu-in g an d complete details wil l be for-warded later."Where oh w he r e are the academichistorians regarding this m em o? Failedintercepts? Anti -a i rcraf t bat ta l ions?Good lord. And whatever happened tothe AEC investigation an d report? The answer to that last questionmight be contained in the wording ofthe 1949 me mo sent to H oover. It statedthat the matter of UFOs w as "consid-ered top secret."Yet, of the thousands of UFO-relateddocuments that were released throughthe Freedom of Information Act, onlythe smallest handful of (highly cen-sored) documents were actually TopSecret. The rest w ere typically classified Re-stricted or C onfidential, or at most Se-cret. Lower levels of secrecy, in otherwords. So where are the Top Secretdocuments?Despite the best efforts of FOIA re-searchers, the best reports an d intelli-gence remain far removed from thepubl ic domain. Despi te what somepeople ha d hoped, the FOIA has notturned out to be a magic bullet. It is also fairly obvious that UFOsecrecy invo lves classifications higherthan Top Secret. Higher classificationsare themse lves c lass i f ied , so whoknow s how far they really go.James Bamford in Body of Secrets,a study of the NSA, writes, "like anendless spiral, there are secret classifi-cation systems w ithin secret classifica-tion systems."

What we do know is that Canadiangovernment official Wilbert Smithw rote in 1950 that he had made "dis-creet enquiries through the Canadianembassy staff in Washington" andlearned that the subject of UFOs w as"the most highly classified subject inthe United States government."Robins Air Force BaseThe last of the early memos I wantto show you is from Robins Air Force

Wilbert SmithBase in Macon, GA, dated July 9,1951.It describes a ten-minute aerial UFOencoun ter that took place in the earlyafternoon.

Th e pilot, a first lieutenant, w as fly-ing an F-51 on a routine flight fromLawson AFB in Columbus, GA. Notfar from Augusta, he encountered anobject that w as "flat on top and bottomand appearing from a front view to haverounded edges an d slightly beveled."At one point the object dived whilein front of the pilot's view. When it didso, it appeared "completely round andspinning in a clockwise direction."The a mo unt of detail on this reportis remarkable. It continues: "From frontview as object dived observer notedsmall spots on the object ...Object didnot appear to be alum inum. Only 1 ob-ject observed. Solar white. No vaportrails or exhaust or visible system ofpropulsion. Described as traveling attremendous speed."The object eventually "disappearedunder his plane."Not only w as this for an extendedduration, but the pilot got to w ithin 300to 400 feet of the object. He estimatedits size at about 10 to 15 feet in diam-eter. This object w as mov ing very fast.According to the report, the pilotthought the object was moving at thespeed of a jet. H e felt a "disturbance inthe air described as a b ump w he n ob-ject passed und er plane.... Pilot flew incombat in Europe for 12 mo nths 1944-1945. Taken as a group, they establish that, during this early period at least, therewere quite a few events that were re -corded an d classified by U.S. militaryand intelligence personnel that they tookseriously. It is easy to understand w hy.Soviet? American? Other? Were these objects of Soviet origin, developed perhaps with the aid of cap-tured German scientists-someof whomw ere indeed experimenting w ith disk-shaped platform s? This possibility w asinvestigated, and rejected.Today, years later, there is still no evi-dence that the Soviets invented "flyingsaucers" after World W ar Two.What about the Americans? Theycaptured their ow n cache of Germanscientists, after all. One can speculateon the possibility that some break-through w as made in the immediatepost-World War Two years, in deepsecrecy, as a result of purely terrestrialscience. But there are several problems withthis theory, as well. First, the documen-tation that w e have indicates seriousefforts on anti-gravity com mencing inthe mid-1950s.If anything started sooner w ithin theUnited States, w e have no documen-tary evidence. That is not to say it didn'thappen, but there are no docum ents toshow it .

Nor would it seem logical that thisw as a deep black Am erican program,at least when viewing th e confronta-tional nature of some of these encoun -ters.T he 1951 pi lot encounter ci tedabove, fo r instance, or the many intru-sions ove r military bases an d researchcenters, don't make sense as a secretAmerican project, at least not on theface of it.Unless, of course, you speculate thata rogue hum an group obtained radicallyadvanced technology; a group beyondthe control of official militaries an dgovernments. I can't prove this, but isit possible? Of course. That, frankly, seems to be the con-servative interpretation, an d it's notexactly conservative. Then there is themore radical interpretation, which isthat this technology wasn't human inorigin at all.

Three hunterswere using the long weekend to dosome bow-and-arrow hunting. On Sep-tembe r 4, the three m en separated fromeach other and began the hunt. One of the hunters, Donald Smythe,

had no idea that he was about to be-come the hunted. After a long day ofhunting, Smythe had become lost andw as having trouble finding his way backto camp. W hen he saw a light dartingback and forth above him, he assumeda helicopter had been sent to rescuehim.Instead, the object came overheadan d hovered silently above him. Whenthe object suddenly landed, Smytherealized that it was something outsideof his experience. H e became fright-ened an d climbed up a nearby tree.Smythe then sa w three figures exitth e craft an d come tow ards him. Tw oof the figures were about five feet talland dressed from head to toe in silvery-gray material. The third figure appearedto be robotic, w ith two reddish-orange"eyes" and a rectangular opening for amouth. The three figures approached the treeand appeared to try and climb it. Therobotic figure opened its rectangular:mouth and belched ou t clouds of foul-smelling gas which made Smythe chokeand lose consciousness. He climbed further up into the treeas the three figu res continued to taun thim. The three figures stayed for hours, despite Smythe's attempts to dissuadethem by dropping b urning bits of pa-per and clothing. He then shot at therobot with his arrows. Although therobot w as knocked dow n, the arrowsbounced off the metallic surface. This w ent on all night. When daw n

Thetw o robots emit ted a huge cloud ofsmoke wh ich enveloped Sm ythe, caus-in g him to lose consciousness. W henhe aw o ke , th e f igures and "dome-shaped" craft were gone.Smythe hurriedly returned to cam p,where he found his friends looking fo rhim. U pon hearing his account, one ofthe hun ters reported that he also saw a"bright, glowing, large light" swoopd ow n and travel at low altitude acrossthe sky. Both companions also re -marked that th e incident undo ubtedlyhad something to do w ith the fact thatthe government w as already hi the arealooking for a "meteorite."Smythe's wife saw him after th eincident and provided additional details:"I knew something w as w rong with himwhen I saw him. He w as as white as asheet, and his eyes were dazed look-ing. He spoke to me in a very shakyvoice.H e had dark circles und er his eyes.H e looked terrible...he had scratches allover his arms. His h ands shook andhis voicewas subdued... he was on theverge of crying [and] was so badlyshaken that he took a week off from

While the Air Force suggestedhe w as perhaps the victim of a prank, pioneering UFO investigator CoralLorenzen calls the case "the m ost spec-tacular report I have ever examined,"an d believes "it is an authentic incidentan d important to the documentation of'occupant' incidents."UFO investigators Ted Bloecher andPaul Cerny also conducted an in-depth,onsite investigation and came a w ay to-tally convinced.W rites Cerny, "Having just reviewedthe case files on this fascinating andunusua l encou nter, there is absolutelyno doub t in my mind that this inciden tis factual and authentic. I have spentconsiderable time and many visits withthe main witness, and along with th etestimony of the other witnesses, I canrule out the possibility of any hoax."

It was a clear starry night

"She said th e road was 'mounded' up,built uphigher than thesurrounding ter-rain. There was (and is) a railroad trackthat parallels the road, but located downbelow, and that its telegraph polesreached only slightly higher than theroadsurface."This stretch of road is about 40 milesnortheast of Roswell, N.M. Today, asthen, the road is still built up and, whilethere are more utility poles, mere are stilllong sections where theroad isabout theheight of the tops of the poles."If you are westbound, to the left is along, descending plain that runs almostto Roswell, devoid of trees, power line, and any other obstructions. As manyplaces in the West, you can literally see25 to 30 miles.

"The wind draft of this object waspulling some dust and straw along withit. Mom said they could not see the topof the object until it passed, but that itfilled the windshield view and rose outof sight vertically.

"She said that it looked like an expresspassenger train, racing across a gradelevel crossing right in front of them. However, it was no train, it was hugewith 'lighted' windows and some dark-ened windows, racing by, giving a pas-senger train effect of train windows go-ing by.

"However, think of trains stacked ontop of each other so high that it fills thewindshield until out of sight. It was mov-ing somewhat faster than any expresstrain she had ever seen, maybe 130MPH, yet was so big it took some timeto pass."Obviously, Dad had seen it comingat the last minuteup out of the dark plainson the left, They both said that it hadcome ' f rom below' on the left to justskim the road top. Dad said it would havehit them had he not seen 'movement inthe dark of f to the left.'"Both parents stressed that this 'wasno t a train,' no head lights. After it passedthey looked for a track in the road, cross-ing signs, or any other evidence of rail. There was nothing."They did say the asphalt was hot, al-most steaming, but there were no marksor anything. Anddefinitely no railroadtracks."They also said it certainly wasn't atrain, as it washuge-thesize and heightof the UniversityofTexas Memorial Sta-dium.

"Both my parents were college edu-cated and intelligent. They both werereligious and very skepticalof new things,of technology. So I am convinced that'something' was seen there. "I commented to my fr iend JohnTracey (also visiting from Brisbane, Aus-tralia), 'What ahuge bird,' when it passedthe tall Ponderosa pines, it was in clearvision.

"This object was flashing a blue light, andon turning towards us was silver andround, and appeared to be landing on aclear grass area between the treesacross the valley. It then climbed up toeye level and started to fly towards us."By this time there were three otherpeople who witnessed this UFO: AverillBoylan from Tauranga, New Zealand;and our hosts, Ainsley and Darlene Bell.

"As we watched, it seemed to turnalong the contour of the hills beforechanging direction and flying across thevalley towards the rocky outcrop on ourside of the valley before it took off atgreat speed towards Denver, then, dis-appearing up into the clouds.
