Welcome to the season of tomatoes and avocados. Avocados are running amok and many of you may have trees. Thesedarlings are full of potassium, vitamin E, the good fats (lubricates us inside and out), and orgasmic flavor. Stick to

about a day while the getting is good. Watch out that good fats do not escalate to just plain too much fat. My to-matoes are starting to ripen and I was lucky enough to score some home grown onions and green beans from FASGIsgarden that I am now tending (thanks to Susan Dilkes and Harold Griffin). And, my neighbor grows garlic! This is how I came up with this recipe that can also be made ahead of time (drizzle dressing at service).

Tomato and Green Bean Salad with Avocado

1 lb green beans, snap top, blanched (thrown in a pot of boiling water for about 3-5 min. and transferred to cold wa-ter - 'til nice bright green color)2 medium sized tomatoes (homegrown, organic or vine-ripened) cut in thin wedges2 small onions, julienne2-3 garlic cloves, fine chop1 small ripe firm avocado, medium dice8-10 large basil leaves, chiffonade

Sea salt and fresh cracked pepper to tasteDressing: cup extra virgin oil cup white balsamic vinegarJuice from to lemonMix ingredients and drizzle in dressing. Toss gently and chill. Serve on a fan of Romaine or Red Leaf lettuce. Itmakes a beautiful presentation. P.S. I like to add a pinch of cayenne!

A few weeks ago, a homebuilder from Camarillo metsome neighbors on Sargent Place to discuss his plan tobuild 14 single-family homes on a very steep slopelined with mature trees. While he discussed his plansfor million-dollar homes, the developer stated emphati-cally that he had the permits to start work on the brandnew cul-de-sac.

As it turned out, he didnt. But it was not until EchoPark residents started asking questions that the devel-oper stopped dumping huge truckloads of dirt on thenarrow hilly street which could create a big mess inthe coming rainy season.

A similar experience happened not long ago on EchoPark Avenue, where a landlord insisted that he had thelegal right to evict a family, largely on the grounds thatthey owned a dog in their apartment. Neighbors knew

better and rallied behind that family, who lived in a rent-controlled unit, offering to appear as witnesses incourt. The landlord backed down.

Echo Park has always been the type of neighborhoodthat asks questions. As our neighborhood experiencesthe tumult caused by a roaring real estate market, weshould always remember to rely on that questioningattitude. After all, landlords have been trying to raisetheir rent by more than 3 percent per year, even thoughthey dont have the legal power to do so.

Real estate speculators have lied to neighbors, tellingthem they have city approval to do things when theydont. Then there is the Los Angeles Unified School Dis-trict, which repeatedly underplayed the number ofhomes it would destroy for a new elementary school.(For the record, its 50 homes).

Questioning has been a tradition for our politicallyoriented community. In the 1950s, our neighborhoodwas not convinced that Elysian Park should be eradi-cated to create a new city zoo. A decade later, the EchoPark community defeated again a similar plan to turn

our beautiful park into a convention center surroundedby parking lots.

So as we all try to watch out for our neighbors and

our quality of life, here are a few things to keep inmind:

DIAL 3-1-1. This city-provided service allows any resi-dent to get a hold of a city agency when theres aproblem. Is someone ripping out a hillside? Call theDepartment of Buildings and Safety and ask for grad-ing. Is someone getting a 20 percent rent increase?Call the Department of Housing.Dont assume someone else has taken care of it. Youmay turn out to be the only squeaky wheel on yourblock.Dont take their word for it. One Echo Park residentasked a developer if he had city permits to rip out a

cliff. The developer said he did and sent earthmoversin to carve out part of a hillside. One week later, in-spectors ordered him to stop workbecause he hadno such permission.Tell your neighbors whats going on. A street hasmore power when it has information and does some-thing about it.The EPIA has always tried to transmit information to

our neighborhood and, when appropriate, ask the ques-tions that need to be posed.

Thats why the Echo Park Improvement Associationcreated the Echo Park Town Hallbecause there wasa need for a forum, a place where questions could be

asked that provided more give and take than is allowedin the very crowded agenda of our neighborhood coun-cil.

Why does the EPIA have a newsletter? We believe in acommunity forum, which is especially important follow-ing the demise of the Los Angeles Independent

We encourage each resident to do the same, and willbe here as the answers come in to spread the word.

Have you seen them? You mean to tell me youhavent seen the red T-shirted kids cleaning theceramic trash bins along Sunset Blvd. Well, one

local resident, David Brophy, has taken some

pictures of the kids at work. Not only does thisteach the kids responsibility for their ownneighborhood but also puts some money in theirpockets for the snacks, much needed schoolsupplies, more snacks, more much needed schoolsupplies. Thanks to Councilman Eric Garcettis

Office and Deputy Mitch OFarrell for making thispossible.

Rummage sales are the best money makers forour off-track lids. Keep bringing your unwanteditems to the center. The last track was able to takefield trips to Magic Mountain, Knotts Berry Farmand camping. The current track had a meeting andhas definitely wants to go camping. The kids selecttheir destinations and then Maryanne figures howmuch it will cost. That amount is what the kids tryto raise. Some of the kids want to put out ourumbrella tables and sell homemade snacks andlemonade. They will also display boutique items for

sale. I feel this will be a nice change from our usualrummage sales.

CCAC has also begun implementing a newprogram for the off-track. All kids who are off-tackhave to write in a journal daily. Priscilla Garcia, ourintern for the summer, then checks the journals formistakes and helps the kids re-write the pages asneeded. Also each kid is being tested for his or her

reading level by Doris Cifuentes a volunteer (aformer client) with CCAC. Each youth then checksout a book from our new library of books which the

kids actually selected. Each youth is expected towrite a report each week. We hope to raise thereading levels of all our off-track kids. Doris willthen re-testeach youth atthe end of thesummer sowe can trackt h e i rprogress. Sofar all off-track kids

    have pickedtheir booksa n d a r er e a d i n geveryday.

We still haveour fun andgames. Wehave beendoing theDodgergiveawayswhich are

always fun and profitable. There was a sleepoverlast Friday for the older kids. Maryanne deliversbreakfast the next morning. Basketball seems tobe the sport of choice around CCAC. This up-coming week we are starting a class on capoeira. Ifyou dont know what capoeira is, then I will keep

you in suspense till later. Im looking forward toparticipating with the kids.
