Please pray for the consolation of their loved ones.

"O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for

you as you wish." This woman was an outsider.

She was a Canaanite, not an Israelite, and as

such she would have been considered ritually un-

clean. But she approached Jesus nonetheless

and asked for his help. And Jesus used this op-

portunity to teach his disciples an important les-

son.

In the verses directly before today's passage, Je-

sus had told Peter that what defiles a person

comes from the heart, not from ignoring external

purity practices. Then, Jesus traveled with his

disciples from Galilee to the region of Tyre and

Sidon where they were much more likely to en-

counter someone considered to be unclean.

At first it appeared that Jesus wasn't going to ac-

knowledge the woman who begged for help. His

comment, "It is not right to take the food of the

children and throw it to the dogs," was a common

comparison between Jews (the children) and Ca-

naanites (the dogs). But, in fact, Jesus said this

only to go right ahead and break this social code!

He showed by his actions that it did not matter

whether someone was Jewish or not, what mat-

tered was the faith in a person's heart. And this

woman proved to Jesus and the doubting disci-

ples that she had great faith. How many others

would have even approached Jesus to ask for his

help? How many others would have persevered

when he appeared unresponsive? By pausing in

his response, and first mentioning the standard

reply, Jesus gave this woman the opportunity to

demonstrate her great faith. And then, he an-

swered her request and praised her extraordinary

faith. What a lesson for his prejudiced disciples!

And what a lesson for us, both to persevere in

faith, and

never to judge

others on

mere

appearances.

Mission Co Op Weekend The IHM Sisters request your support in their Mis-sion Cooperative Appeal this weekend. Your support is critical to their outreach to the under-served people of Peru. IHM Sisters minister to thousands of people each year through their work in 16 states, the District of Columbia, and Peru. The IHM Sisters have served in the Diocese of Pittsburgh for over 100 years. Sr. Delia Marie McNierney, IHM and will be our speaker on behalf of the IHM missionary ministries.

Eucharistic Adoration & Veneration of the Relic of St. Jerome

at St. Anthony's Chapel

On Sunday, September 3rd at 3:00 pm, we will

begin to pray the Church's evening prayer before

Christ in the Eucharist. The Blessed Sacrament

will be exposed in the monstrance at the begin-

ning of evening prayer and the service will con-

clude with Benediction, Christ imparting His

blessing to us in His Eucharistic Presence. Fol-

lowing the service, the faithful who wish to do so

will have the opportunity to venerate a relic of one

of the saints. For September, it will be the relic

of Saint Jerome whose feast day is September

30th.

GOSPEL MEDITATION 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Diocesan Collection 26 & 27 During the weekend of August 26 & 27, we will take up a second collection for the Catholic Com-munication and Catholic University of America Campaigns. The Catholic Communication Cam-paign is a collection that helps to support our weekly televised Masses and various catechetical video programs. This is a mandated collection from the Diocese of Pittsburgh where a gift from each parish is expected. This second collection will assure that this gift does not have to come from parish general funds. Thank you for your generosity.

Faith Sharing with Mike Aquilina The Faith Formation Discussion Group has been meeting for more than one year to study and discuss books that help us widen our Faith Horizons. Our next book is Under-standing the Mass, by the well known Pittsburgh author and T.V. Personality Mike Aquilina. Everyday Stewardship

The Jubilee Year of Mercy is now in the history books and looking back I wonder if I have been changed at all by the observance. Certainly the focus on mercy wasn't all about God's mercy toward me? Yes, I focused on my sin and the need for God's forgiveness and grace, but hopefully that changed how I live my life and how I offer mercy to others.

The mercy we receive from God is not something we are to keep bottled up or hidden from others. Jesus taught us to treat others the way we would like to be treated and to love everyone, even our enemies. When Jesus healed the Canaanite woman I wonder what she did next. I would hope she in turn offered mercy and healing to others. Of course, I know she was imperfect just like me so I am sure in no time she was back to needing the mercy of Jesus. Her demon was gone, but there is always a new evil around every corner.

However, the fact that we are a broken people always in need of mercy does not lessen the command for us to offer mercy. Mercy is a gift like so many others that God lavishes on us with great generosity. We are called to cultivate this and share it with others as well. If we cannot do that then what was the real effect of God's mercy in our lives? If we do not allow God to change us into more generous stewards ready to offer mercy and love to all, then perhaps we are fooling ourselves that we are true disciples of Jesus at all.

Diocesan Choir Auditions - Auditions for the 2017-2018 Diocesan Choir season will soon be held. The Choir, under the direction of Fr. Jim Chepponis, Music Director for the Diocese of Pittsburgh, sings for the major Diocesan events at St. Paul’s Cathedral throughout the year. Currently there are openings in the soprano, alto, tenor and bass sections. Rehears-als are held at St. John Capistran Church in Upper St. Clair. Survey on Young People, Faith, and Vocational Dis-cernment -- Pope Francis and Bishop Zubik need your advice!
