Did You Know... These Facts About September

• The birthstone is the Sapphire.

• The birth flower for September is Morning Glory.

• The two zodiac signs in September are Virgo (August 23 – September 22) and Libra (September 23 – October 22)

• September was named after septem, Latin for “seven”, when the original Roman calendar started in March, so September was the seventh month.

• The Anglo-Saxons called this month Gerst Monath, which means barley month. This is because they would harvest their barley crops during this month.

In Our CommunityDalhousie Kindergarten NewsIt’s September and “back to school” is an exciting time

for our Jr and Sr groups here at Dalhousie Community Kindergarten. Parents and children alike are adapting to their new routines, quickly making connections and many new friends.

The Kindergarten classroom is a unique environment, bringing together children of all learning styles, with their own personalities and an individual set of interests. A wonderful opportunity presents itself here - to learn from one another and celebrate the diversity that will be found. It is so much fun to be a part of the social learning and development that happens here.

Throughout these first few weeks of school, children this age can experience a complete system-overload when it comes to how they feel: excitement, worry, pride, determination, anxiety, sadness... it can feel like a roller coaster! These feelings can manifest themselves in some strange ways. How can we, as a parent or a teacher, help our children navigate these emotional waters and ensure this transition is a smooth one? Here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Stay calm. This transition can be difficult for a child and grownups as well. Do your best to maintain a positive outlook about the year ahead and strive to keep your own concerns off your children’s shoulders.

2. Offer specific praise. Instead of a generic, “good job!”, try - “I love how you said good morning to your friends”. Help your child recognize the significance of the little things they do everyday and individual steps to success.

3. Label and Validate. Sometimes when our kindergarteners are having big feelings, it may be something they have not felt before or have difficulty understanding. Label their feelings for them – i.e. “Your body looks angry.” Let them know it is ok to feel the way that they do, and that other kids feel the same way too. Put yourself in their shoes, “if that happened, I would feel angry too.”

4. Problem Solve. Brainstorm together to discuss things that could help them feel better. Be realistic - they still might have to face whatever is a problem (like waiting and sharing) but we can usually find a strategy that will make things more comfortable.

5. Reach Out. If you are navigating some big feelings with your child at home, please don’t hesitate to reach

out to your teacher. The classroom environment is a busy place, but a quick phone call or email is so important and helpful. You know your child and their emotions best, and at this time of the year, classroom staff is just introducing themselves to their new students and may not be able to see what you see. The teacher/parent partnership is one of the things that will make your school year a successful one, and we pride ourselves on being a program that values these relationships.

At time of writing, we have a space for a junior or senior kindergarten student. We’d love to hear from you! Learn more at www.dcakids.com or call us at (403) 288-1050

Dalhousie Community PlayschoolSchool is still out for summer, and we hope that

everyone is enjoying the summer weather, with lots of time spent outdoors! Nature truly is the best playground and we are fortunate to have so many great playgrounds, camping facilities, hiking trails and lakes so close to Calgary. Before the playschool closed for our summer vacation, the children enjoyed lots of classes outdoors within the amazing facilities Dalhousie Community centre has to offer. We enjoyed Soccer classes, sports days, water play and obstacle courses. The children had a blast burning off all their extra energy while working on team building, gross motor strength, communication and social skills!

Do you know a preschool aged child and are looking for a place where they can grow and learn at their own pace, in an environment where it is safe to explore and discover, where adventure awaits and activities are designed to fuel creativity! You can find that here! We have 2.5 hour morning and afternoon classes, two dedicated teachers, bright classrooms, great outdoor spaces and child lead programming.

Please contact [email protected], call 403-286-2339 or visit www.dalhousieplayschool.blogspot.com. We would love to answer your questions or give you a tour of our classroom and have limited spaces available for the 2018/2019 school year.

Everyone welcome!

Join the DCAI recently joined the Dalhousie Community Association

after over 30 years of living in this wonderful community. I found myself unemployed with some time on my hands and heard about the Co-op and Birchwood developments and needed to know more. Even after only a few months and still learning, I have come to appreciate what a tremendous job this group of people continues to do on behalf of Dalhousie... ultimately on behalf of you and me. We are so fortunate in this community to have such a dedicated, committed group of people, both volunteers and paid staff. It is a privilege and honor to be part of this team. I am inviting you to get involved and join us in shaping the community we live in. Perhaps you, like me, find yourself with some extra time or are interested in learning more about where you live and play. As you know, many hands make light(and fun!) work, so please consider checking us out! One of our goals this year is to increase and improve representation on the Dalhousie Community Association of the residents in this diverse multicultural community spanning all age groups. We also would like to expand our skill set and currently seek those with a legal background, information technology or handyman skills, but all are appreciated and welcome for ideas and feedback. Give it some thought... it is very rewarding! Contact any Board Member for more information.
