A MESSAGE FROM FATHER JOE: While being pastor of St. Mary’s Mullen and Missions, I was once asked by a very dear friend and parishioner: “father Joe, do you have 4th of July in India?” Though taken aback for a moment by the question (I was sure the calendar dates are same the world over, given the time differences!), I grasped its significance; and my reply was: “oh sure, we too have 4th of July in India; just that it happens to be on 15th August!” India celebrates its Independence Day on 15 August. On this date in 1947 India achieved its independence from the British colonial power, not without struggles that stretched over many decades. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (known simply as GANDHI today) initiated the struggle and gave it leadership. The uniqueness of the struggle is that it was based on Non-Violence. Gandhi and his followers used peaceful means in their struggle to achieve freedom for India, proving beyond any doubt the power of peaceful, non-violent means of protest over violent methods to achieve true revolution. On 26 November 1949, India declared itself a sovereign democratic republic, as it adopted its own Constitution based on justice, equality and fraternity, guaranteeing freedom of thought and expression. The preamble to the Indian Constitution reads as follows: “ WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN, SOCIALIST, SECULAR ,DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens: JUSTICE, social, economic and political; LIBERTY of thought , expression, belief, faith and worship; EQUALITY of status and of opportunity; and to promote among them all FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation; IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this twenty-sixth day of November, 1949, do HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION.” My sisters and brothers, please pray for this great nation, India. Even though its constitution guarantees freedom of religion, we are witnessing today the very disconcerting situation of religious intolerance, where fundamentalist obscurantism is playing havoc among the religious minorities of the country; our own Christian faith is wit-nessing open opposition in numerous areas of the country and persecution is rearing its ugly head against the propagation of the Gospel message. Instances of violence against Christians and Christian institutions are on the increase, with the political powers turning their faces away from the unpleasant realities, nay even abetting them in more ways than one. Please pray that the hardly 2 per cent Christians in India may prove to be the light in the darkness of religious intolerance and be the leaven that will leaven the whole society around them with the Gospel values of love and tolerance, and acceptance of everyone as a brother and sister despite the difference in race, language or faith system. May all of you be blessed by the Lord with joy and peace in the week that is ahead of you. Father Joe SD B
