Dear Merchant People,We would like to thank Mark Williamsand the Printing Trade Company forhosting a wonderful July meeting, andfor providing some access for some ofour most notables running for theGwinnett County Commission.
One of Duluth’s most giving persons,Kathryn Willis, is hosting the Augustmeeting. Kathryn has taken it uponherself to furnish a place for us (at herown house) to meet, since the Festivalbuilding will be tied up for the runoffelections. She’s preparing for a lot ofpeople, so let’s not let her down. La Cazuela and Duluth Fine Wine andSpirits will be providing the food anddrink.
We'll see all of you there!

NEW EXHIBIT: Olympic MemoriesWe thought in honor of the
upcoming Olympics we would share
some items and pictures of other
Olympics. If you have pictures and
or memorabilia we would like to
add it to this exhibit. Many of our
duluthians helped in 1996 and we
are sure you have some pictures.
THE STRICKLAND HOUSEWe are still working on acquiring the Strickland House as your permanent museum, visitors center, and gardens. This home and acreage is a very big part of our town’s
history and the thought of losingit to new development is justunthinkable. Besides the home, the grounds are the home of oldgrowth trees. That is rare to findthese days. We are doing thisfor all Duluth. We want to saveyour history and we need yourhelp. Contact any HistorySociety member or [email protected].
News From Downtown Duluth
ARTIFACTS: The city is collecting any memorabiliaor artifacts or pieces of furniture thatyou may wish to share or donate tothe museum. Don't throw oldnewspapers or magazines out. Weoften get great bits of history fromthe articles and the ads in them. Werecently got some life magazinesfrom the 70's. They are very helpful

Duluth Fall Festival funds have been usedfor numerous projects in the Downtownarea through the last 25 years. In 1983Downtown Duluth looked very differentfrom the way it looks today, so the earlyyears were spent primarily on upgradingand landscaping the town. Progress thatdepended on funds was slow becausethe festival made very little moneybefore the sponsor program wasintroduced. However, the volunteersgave freely of their physical labor andenthusiasm toimproveDuluth and alot wasaccomplished.Volunteers arestill the mostimportantentity of theorganization. Now we haveover 300, manywho work yearround on the town and the Festival. Many of these volunteers are alsomembers of DMA.
The big breakthrough came in 1996 withthe purchase by the Festival Committeeand the City of the land that becameTaylor Park. From this beginning the Citycame through with the construction ofthe Town Green, the Festival Committeethen followed with the Duluth FestivalCenter, and, as is often said, the rest ishistory.
The Festival's greatest accomplishmentshave been due to the support of oursponsors. Last year thirty eight DMAmembers were Duluth Fall Festivalsponsors and we thank you for that. Wehave already sent all of you our 2008Sponsor Brochures (Accent Mail did agreat job on these). This will give youinformation about our sponsor programand the benefits of each level, whichinclude advertising and networking
opportunities. We are gladto answer anyof yourquestions, and hope thatyou willconsiderbeing asponsor. There are alsoother waysthat you can
get involved. We need advertisers for theGwinnett Daily Post Festival Tabloid,Silent Auction items, Road Race runners, etc., and would love to have you as amember of our volunteers. Go towww.duluthfallfestival.org for moreinformation.
All of us really appreciate the supportfrom Duluth Merchants Association. Weare especially thankful that DMA willoversee the shuttle service again this

year, as we couldn't begin toaccommodate the crowds that we havewithout this service. It has been awonderful addition to the festival, andhas improved every year. We have manycompliments on this and on yourmembers who help with it.
The goal of our two organizations isessentially the same, to improve Duluth!Whereas the Festival funds always stay in
the Downtown area and are usually usedfor capital projects, the DMA funds oftengo to specific organizations that alsohelp Duluth in many other ways. Ourgoal is for our two groups to continue towork together as much as possible tomake Duluth the best community inGwinnett County and in Georgia. Thankyou DMA, for all that you have alreadydone for Duluth and for yourcommitment to its future!
