Hello everyone,

Autumn has passed us by and I’ve swapped the warmth of summer in Maine for the winter chill of home. Lucy, the resident moggy was pleased to see me even at 6am on a very foggy Saturday morning. And yes I shed tears on leaving when the 8yr old grandson wrapped his arms round my legs saying “you can’t leave yet nana”.

DATES & TIMESFriday 6th November, 10am – 5pm

Saturday 7th November, 10am – 5pmSunday 8th November, 10am – 4pm

Welcome to the July update.

Wow, who would have thought, we are half way through the quilting calendar for this year’s show!! Your show committee are working very hard this year, we not only have a new venue to organise, & it will be fabulous, but that always comes with challenges!! However, it is ultimately for the benefit us all as Guild members. I hope when we ask for volunteers to help run the show, we will be inundated!! Remember, our biggest benefit to everyone (Guild members and our viewing public) the show spectacular is all on one level, so very easy to navigate the merchants, your wonderful quilts on show, quilt sales, community quilts, and the special exhibitions we will be displaying. We will have the new advertising flyer available shortly, which we will be asking you all for help in distributing to friends, colleagues, workplaces, libraries, public information centres etc., closer to the show. Also look for it in the next edition of NZ Quilter.

Hope your quilts are progressing nicely (if not finished!!) It is always interesting to see what style will be predominant each year, sometimes it is really noticeable and sometimes it takes a couple of shows before you pick up on a change in the style of the quilts. I was reading an article recently on the 10 most prominent trends at shows in the USA and one of them was the return to the more traditional style of quilts and the muted palette colours. Interesting how things go in cycles. I also look forward to the July meeting and seeing all the fabulous 12x12 Guild mid year challenge “Being Fabulous” on displayNew this year is a “Quilts for Children” prize, to be selected from all categories, excluding Kits/Block of the Month and Mixed Media

The Conditions of Show, Categories, Mixed Media Conditions, Conditions of Entry and Entry Form for 2015 are all available on the Guild website. If you are unable to print an Entry Form, there are some available at Guild Day from the table next to the Education area. I have included these in this newsletter, but other than entry form, you will, after this need to go to the website for the information.

Thank you to everyone who have taken the packs of cards, and to all those who have returned their beautiful work. Just amazing!! We only have a few packs left, so am sure these will disappear at the next meeting.

When preparing your quilt/s for entering into the show, please pay extra attention when attaching the Velcro. All quilts need to have the fluffy side of the Velcro securely attached across the width of the quiltEXCEPTION to this is: - for the “On the Move”, & the 12 x 12 “Being Fabulous” challenges, these require the hook side to be sewn on. These quilts will be hanging on the Peek stands.

Rosters for volunteering on Hand in Day and at the show, will be at the August meeting, so please, in the interim give it some thought, we’d love to have your help, the success of the show depends on us all.

Happy quilting from the Auckland Festival of Quilts 2015 team

Judi and the Auckland Festival of Quilts 2015 team

Our Speaker this month....

ARTISAN TEXTILES

Hand-crafted silk, cotton and linen by the metre. Embroideries, artisan supplies and more...

provenance.co.nz

Hello all, I hope that you all enjoyed last month’s speaker in spite of our recurring Microphone problems. We are getting the technicians who supplied the equipment to come to Freemans Bay Hall to see for themselves what is interfering with our sound system and to rectify it on the spot. What a frustration it has been for us. This coming meeting I will be absent in Australia attending a friend’s 80th birthday but I am sure that you will find our speaker of value for the tension in our arms, neck and backs after sewing and/or sitting too long in one position.

Our speaker Patricia Bolton completed her medical degree with the University of Auckland, and then specialised in Public Health. During her medical training she undertook an apprenticeship with a rehabilitation specialist, and has continued to develop rehabilitation skills in the management of acute and chronic pain and injury. Patricia has a dynamic approach to supporting healing of a broad range of pain and injury issues, from the correction and prevention of office work-related chronic pain issues to the management of recurrent physical stress and trauma expe-rienced by high performance athletes. Patricia currently works as a Public Health Physician, and also provides rehabilitation therapy to dancers at a West Auckland ballet school. Patricia’s talk will incorporate a hands-on demonstration with a volunteer or volunteers from amongst our gathering. Once again, I trust you will find benefit from what she has to share.Warm regards Ann

Community QuiltsHello Everyone

I hope that you are keeping yourselves warm and comfortable.

Thanks to the ladies who came downstairs last month and helped sort out the donated fabrics. We have had a lot given to us in the last two to three months.

I would really love to have two more helpers from 10.30am - 11.30am to sort out more of these wonderful fabrics. Just come down the stairs to the left of the stage and you will be warmly welcomed.

We have 30 to 40 finished quilts to be given away and are working out which Women & Children’s Refuge to give to in July.

I have a request from Ellen Butland to give community quilts to Habitat for Humanity.I would like to hear your opinion on this one. Please let me know of any organizations that you think deserve our beautiful and loving quilts.

We have five finished quilts returned to us from Chris’s quilting class. I understand that Christine is now hooked on quilting after the class.

Love from Chiz and Community Quilts Team

8ply wool neededI knit baby beanies for neonatal and pasifika babies which I give to my sister who is a public health nurse. These babies are often in sub-standard housing so I make sure I use good quality 100% wool. I was wondering if anyone had some leftover wool lying around that they could donate. It is possible to make a beanie from a 50g ball, leaving some over for stripes!I’m often down the back with the greeting card project for the Festival of Quilts. And thanks to Marj for her donation…You are a treasure! I’ve now finished mine. I like to think that yours is on the way to being finished and nearly ready to be handed in to the next July meeting were we will be displaying them and giving out some prizes. We have reserved a space at Festival of Quilts so let’s make our presence felt. Let’s show the viewing public that we belong to the Guild and that we all have personalities of our own, as well as our skills of quilting. Please sew Hook Velcro to the back because we will be displaying them on the grey fibre boards at Festival of Quilts. Also, please sew a label to the back showing the quilt title, your name and telephone number and your membership number.

Happy quilting – see you at the next meeting in Freemans Bay.Val

Challenges

Congratulations to you four ladies and congratulations to all the other entrants. I can’t wait to see them all (well, most of them) hanging at Festival of Quilts in our lovely new venue.

If you need to have your quilt back, please email me [email protected] and I will bring them into the July meeting.

We would like them back for the October meeting so you can pick them up after FoQ. I will store them safely until Festival of Quilts setup day.
