WelcomeWe’re glad you’re here! Thank you for joining us today. Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since 1804, when our church was formed to minister to the Native American and European settlers in Athens. Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to “do all the good you can, in all the ways you can.” At Athens First United Methodist, there are many ways to get involved, grow in your faith, and do good in our community.

If you are unable to attend worship in person, each Sunday our 11:00 a.m. service is broadcast on WRFC 960 AM, and our 9:45 and 11:00 a.m. services are live-streamed on our website at athensfirstumc.org/webcast.

NurseryOur nursery is available for infants through four-year-olds on Sundays from 8:15 a.m.– 12:15 p.m. The nursery area is located on the first floor of the building, off the Washington Street entrance.

ChildrenWorship activity bags (age appropriate for all preschool and elementary children) are available every Sunday in the narthex and by the south entrance of the sanctuary. Children’s Church is held for children in kindergarten through second grade and follows the Children’s Message during 11:00 a.m. worship all Sundays except for Communion Sundays.

Sunday SchoolWe offer Sunday School for all ages, kindergarten through adult, each Sunday from 9:45– 10:45 a.m. For a list of adult Sunday School classes and locations, visit athensfirstumc.org/adultsundayschool.

ConnectWe are blessed to have a large congregation and because of this we offer many programs and ministries. It can be overwhelming trying to decide where to get involved. If you would like a buddy to guide you along this process please notify a Helper. Helpers serve as part of our Welcome Ministry team. Look for them in the narthex or near the altar. You can also contact a Helper through our website athensfirstumc.org/helper.

Another great way to learn about the life of our church is through attending a Newcomer Orientation held every second Sunday of the month at 9:45 and 11 a.m. We also encourage you to visit our website, athensfirstumc.org, for information about our ministries, to register for events, and to listen to sermons from our sermon archive. Visit athensfirstumc.org/thesteeple to sign up for our weekly newsletter, the eSteeple. You can also connect with us via social media. Find us @athens_firstumc on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest.

Our church office is open Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. If you need assistance, please call 706-543-1442.

THE CHOR A L CA LL TO WORSHIP 8:30 a.m. May the angels escort you into paradise; at your coming, may the martyrs receive you and bring you into the holy city, Jerusalem. May the chorus of angels receive you, and with Lazarus, once a poor man, may you have eternal rest.

In paradisum (English: “Into paradise”) is an antiphon from the traditional Latin liturgy of the Western Church Requiem Mass. It is sung by the choir as the body is being taken out of the church.

THE A N THEM | 9:45 & 11:00 a.m. “Neither Angels, Nor Demons, Nor Powers” | Timothy Takach

Sung by the Chamber EnsembleAnd I believe. So I believe. I will lift up my eyes to the hills. There, does thou will believe, no storm should come to mar the stillness of that angel-home; there should thy slumbers be weighed down with honey-dew, serenely blessed. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, neither angels, nor demons, nor powers, neither things present nor things to come, neither height nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God. I do believe. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

THE OFFER ING

THE OFFERTORY A N THEM 8:30 a.m. “Revelation Song” | J. RiddleWorthy is the Lamb who was slain, holy, holy is He. Sing a new song to Him who sits on Heaven’s mercy seat. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty who was and is and is to come. With all creation I sing praise to the King of Kings. You are my everything and I will adore You. Clothed in rainbows of living color, flashes of lightning, rolls of thunder, blessing and honor, strength, and glory and power be to You the only wise King. Filled with wonder, awestruck wonder, at the mention of Your name Jesus. Your name is power, breath and living water, such a marvelous mystery.

Congregation sings as directed.Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

Almighty God, your people of all the ages live and praise you without ceasing. In our communion with you, we have communion with generations past and generations yet unborn. Before your throne we are one with a great multitude which no one could number, and in praising you we join with people from every nation. Grant to your church on earth that, as we celebrate the triumph of your saints in glory, we may profit by their example and enter with them into the inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who love you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE A N THEM “Do Not Stand at My Grave” | Howard Goodall

Sung by the Sanctuary Choir; Kevin Rowland, soloistDo not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the softly falling snow. I am the gentle show’rs of rain, I am the fields of ripening grain. I am in the morning hush, I am in the graceful rush of far off birds in circling flight, I am the starshine of the night. Lacrymosa dies illa (O how tearful that day).I am in every flower that blooms, I am in still and empty rooms. I am the child that yearns to sing: I am in each lovely thing. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there; I did not die.

Calling All Military FamiliesThe Congregational Care Ministry would like to extend its appreciation to military families in our church. Even though combat missions have eased, America’s commitment to our troops must continue whether they are at home or abroad. It is our joy to support military families within our church family. We have identified 19 military families and have displayed photos in the library hallway and remember these families in prayer. Is someone in your family serving in the military? We would like to add you to the rolls of our Military Family Hall of Fame. We want to show our patriotism and appreciation for all of our military families who sacrifice so much to protect us. Let us know who you are and who in your

family is serving our country so that we can show our gratitude for your sacrifice. Carole Langley | [email protected]
