Sunday School Correspondent: Bill Simpson
Every Sunday morning, several hundred persons, from children to seniors,
take part in one of the most traditional and meaningful activities of this
historic church: Sunday School. Classes range in size, in format, in ages,
and in activity and service. Many classes have been formed over the years
to accommodate the interests and compatibilities of those of a similar age.
One of these is the Pathfinders Class, formed in the year 2000.
As is often the case, the class was started by a mix of single and married
persons in their mid- to late-twenties. A decade later, the 36 persons on the
roll are now in their 30s and 40s and most are married. Many now have
young children.
The Pathfinders Class rotates teaching among members, with as many
as half of the class filling that role. Each person leads for a month (or the
length of a study) at a time. The objective of the class is to do deep and
meaningful study and not, as they describe it, “a lot of fluff.” The group is
very close-knit, enjoying a social event about once a month. As with so
many of the Sunday School classes, the Pathfinders devote time each
week to prayer concerns for members, their families, friends, and others
whom they know need special care. They also participate as a group in
church activities such as Souper Supper. The class stays in touch via a
weekly email.
The Pathfinders would love to welcome you to their class if you share
similar interests and want to grow in God’s grace.

Hosts Needed for Texas Boys Choir| March 17On Monday, March 17, at 7:00 p.m. the Texas Boys Choir will perform a free concert in our sanctuary as part of their 2014 Southeastern tour. The 51-voice boy choir will perform a full and varied program including both classical music and music from world, folk and popular traditions. Lenten Study: 24 Hours That Changed the World Begins March 19All are invited to participate in this churchwide Lenten study of Adam Hamilton’s 24 Hours That Changed the World. Senior Fun Luncheon| March 27Please reserve your seat as early as possible for the Thursday, March 27, Senior Fun Luncheon. Dr. Philip Lanoue, Superintendent of Clarke County Schools, and Dr. Jason Branch, Superintendent of Oconee County Schools, will be our featured guests. Senior Fun Trip to Chattanooga | March 25All persons 55 and older are welcome to join the Senior Fun Group and to participate on their day trip to Chattanooga. The group will travel via chartered bus to Chattanooga to visit Lookout Mountain and the Tennessee Aquarium, see an IMAX show, and have lunch at Mt. Vernon. Palm Sunday |April 13Christians worldwide celebrate Palm Sunday, the day Jesus triumphantly entered into Jerusalem when believers spread palm branches on the ground in his honor. The observance is linked to Ash Wednesday, when palms from the year before are burned and ground into ashes that are preserved and placed on the forehead as a sign of repentance. Many western churches have observed palm blessings and distributions to the congregation on Palm Sunday since the middle ages. Early references to Palm Sunday observations, including a procession and blessing of palms, go as far back as the fourth and eighth centuries. We celebrate Palm Sunday as part of Holy Week.

Karl Jenkins’ Stabat Mater |March 30The sanctuary choir with a full orchestra will be performing Karl Jenkins’ Stabat Mater at all three worship services, 8:15, 9:45, and 11:00 a.m., on Sunday, March 30. Stabat Mater, composed in 2008 by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins, is a powerful text that meditates on the suffering of Mary, Jesus Christ’s mother, at the time of his crucifixion.
