ALABAMA
ALABAMA TRUCKER • 2014 Convention Special Edition 1
to the Alabama Trucking Association’s 76th Annual Convention & Membership Meeting
Welcome...Dear Conventioneer,
We once again find ourselves surrounded by our friendsand colleagues at one of the top resorts on the Gulf Coast, prepared to conduct the business of this importantAssociation.
During our time here, we will discuss solutions for someof the obstacles that face our industry; learn more aboutthe services this Association provides; congratulate thoseamong us who have gone the extra mile in doing their jobsprofessionally and safely; and honor those who have servedthis Association through the years with excellent leadershipand unwavering support.
It’s not supposed to be all work, however. There will beample time to relax and enjoy the surrounding attractions —the beach, the spa, the golf course, shopping outlets, andthe company of friends and colleagues.
For the past year, it has been my responsibility to makesure it’s going to a great event. Spearheading the planningcommittee has been a truly rewarding experience for me,and one that I hope will result in a great meeting for us all. This Association deserves no less.
I want to thank Convention Finance Committee ChairmanJoe Black of McGriff Tire Co. for his and his committee’shard work in securing nearly $215,000 in sponsorshipsfunds. His team did a great job that will allow us to gain themost from our time together.
I’d like to applaud these men and women for their out-standing efforts. This year’s Convention Finance Committeemembers are: ATA Chairman Kevin Savoy, GreenbushLogistics, Inc.; Gary Bond, BancorpSouth EquipmentFinance; Leigh Breal, Ward International Trucks; Jack Brim,B.R. Williams Trucking, Inc.; Fenn Church, ChurchTransportation & Logistics, Inc.; Mark Coffman, CoffmanInternational, Inc.; John Collier, Transport Trailer Center;Rodger Collins, Industrial Warehouse Services, Inc.; and
Steve Stinson, Mid State Thermo King.I also applaud Mr. Savoy for an outstanding term as this
Association’s highest elected official. This time last year, heheld the same responsibility of planning for this annualmeeting. There’s so much more than meets the eye whenplanning for an event of this scale, and his advice and guid-ance was a blessing.
Frank and his staff also worked extremely hard, overlook-ing no detail to ensure that you enjoy and maximize yourtime here this weekend. Each of them, Jane, Lynn, Brandie,Tim and Ford, offer a wealth of experience and expertise tomake it all flow smoothly as possible. A well-organized teamis hard to beat.
But our greatest appreciation is for the 107 ATA memberfirms that pledged financial support for this year’s ATAAnnual Meeting & Convention. Their support of this and ourmany other events and programs is why the AlabamaTrucking Association is among the leading trade associa-tion in Alabama, and beyond. As you look through thepages of this booklet, please make note of these business-es and their contribution to your Alabama TruckingAssociation.
I look forward to visiting with you this weekend. If youhave suggestions as to how we can improve our meeting, please let me or an ATA staff member know.

BUSINESS MEETING & BREAKFASTFriday 8:30-11:00 a.m. Emerald Ballroom
Breakfast is sponsored bySpeakers appear thanks to our ACT I Level Sponsors
Our 76th Annual Meeting starts off with a working breakfast in the Emerald Ballroom where attendees willhear two great presenters.
First up is Ken Gronbach, a gifted speaker, author, and nationally recognized expert and futurist in the fieldof demography and generational marketing. He brings his brand of wit, humor and clear communication tomake the science of shifting demography come alive with real life examples that make it relevant to today’sculture, business climate and economy.Mr. Gronbach has authored several books on the social and demographic changes that lie ahead for busi-
ness owners. His perspective is macro, delivering the big picture for his audience. He explains how demogra-phers are able to forecast markets, societal phenomena, and economics with uncanny accuracy because theycount people, not money or things. His research also explains how the effects of an aging workforce will change the way employers will hire in
the coming years, and demonstrates why other world economies, such as The European Union, EasternEurope, The Middle East, Asia and Africa are all facing serious damaging individual demographic issues withno apparent remedy. He forecasts a large scale exodus and brain drain from these countries and regions tothe two continents of the Americas. This will drive the economy of the Americas to levels never seen before.
A fter a brief intermission, is Jim Morris, who at the age of 35 got a second chance at his dream of playingbaseball professionally. He’d gotten his first shot at the Big Leagues, just out of college, as a pitcher, but
nagging injuries and the rigors of life in general derailed him. He retired, married, began raising a family, became a high school science teacher and baseball coach, and was generally a contented man.During a particularly lousy season, Morris lectured his demoralized team about pursuing their dreams and
about becoming winners. The team upped the ante and challenged him to pursue his own dreams aboutbaseball. They knew how hard he threw a baseball and believed he had a chance. So the bet was on: If his high school team won the district championship, something they had never done,
then Morris would try out for a major league baseball team. Miraculously, the team held up their end of the bet, and Morris went to an open tryout for the Majors, where
he threw 12 consecutive pitches at 98 MPH to the amazement of scouts in attendance. That tryout eventuallyled to a pro contract to play baseball again at an age when most are retiring. His uplifting story, which Disney Studios made into a major production movie in 2002, shows how overcom-
ing adversity in the pursuit of your dreams is the stuff great leaders are made of, whether it’s in business, onthe battlefield, in your community, or just simply raising great kids. Mr. Morris story will enthrall and inspire attendees.

Association’s overall standing as the state’s preeminent voice for the trucking indus-try. His agenda has included initiatives to bolster member numbers, increase existingmembership involvement in ATA events and special projects — especially amongtrucking firms; and fortify and improve the industry’s public image for economicdevelopment, and industry safety and professionalism.
During the program, we also recognize this year’s Alabama Truck Driver of theYear, longtime Evergreen Transport, Inc. employee George Jones, who was chosenby ATA’s Safety and Maintenance Management Council for his commitment to indus-try safety and professionalism in a career that has spanned five decades (Read moreof his accomplishments on page 16).
Another highlight of this event is the announcement of this year’s winner of the H.Chester Webb Award, which is this Association’s highest honor for a member. Lastyear’s winner Bill Scruggs of Southland International Trucks will announce the winner.

Workers’ Compensation Fund Members
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen:
Enclosed you will find a copy
of the Summarized Audited Financial Statements of the Alabama Trucking Association
Workers’ Compensation Fund for the year
ended December 31, 2013. The Auditors conducted their aud
it in accor-
dance with U.S. generally accepted auditin
g standards. Those standa
rds require the Auditors to pla
n and perform
the audit to obtain reasona
ble assurance about whether the fin
ancial statements are free
of material misstatement.
Upon the completion of all necessary exam
ination of the evidence sup
porting the amounts include

cial statements and assessing the acc
ounting principles used and
significant estimates made by management, the
Auditors determined that their
audit provided a reasonab
le basis for issuing their op
inion. Their opinion conclud
ed
that these financial statements present
fairly, in all material respects, the financi
al position of the Alabama Trucking
Association Workers’ Compensation Self Insurance Fund as of December 31, 2013.
These financial statements reflect th
e Fund has accumulated total p

, 2014 to
respective participating members with their 2014 calendar yea

onsolidated Statement of Income and Deductions inc
ludes loss reserves
which are required to pay inc
urred but not reported (IBNR) losses as de

that the

f irregular occurring claims losses. After having made these yea
r-end adjust-
