ATA’s Business Meeting & Breakfast is the official opening of the Alabama Trucking Association’s 2013 Annual Convention. Featuredspeaker for the event is Capt. Gerald Coffee, U.S. Navy (Ret.), who, while flying combat missions over North Vietnam in 1966, was

downed by enemy fire. He parachuted safely from his plane, but was captured immediately and spent seven years as a Prisoner of Warin Communist prisons of that country. His presentation will focus on his incredible experience from capture to ultimate release. His faithin himself, others, his country, and his spiritual tenets were crucial to turning an unbelievably difficult and potentially devastating experi-ence into an opportunity for personal growth.

Born in Modesto, Calif., Gerald “Jerry” Coffee joined the Navy in 1957 after graduating from UCLA with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, as an F-8 Crusader pilot, Jerry was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for flying low levelreconnaissance missions over Cuba, taking the photos ultimately used by the United States U.N. ambassador to prove the existence ofSoviet missiles there.

He was featured in the 2007 History Channel series, “Man, Moment, Machine,” which recounts his photo recon exploits during thatdangerous time in U.S. history. His daring mission is also documented in Michael Dobb’s book, “One Minute to Midnight: Kennedy,Khrushchev, and Castro on the Brink of Nuclear War.”

After his capture in Vietnam, he spent seven years in prison camps, and was released in 1973. He then returned to operationalduties and retired from active duty in the Navy after 28 years of distinguished service. His military decorations include the Silver Star, two awards of the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, two Bronze Stars, the Air Medal, two Purple Hearts, and the VietnamService Medal with 13 stars.

Today, Capt. Coffee is considered among the nation’s top speakers, addressing thousands each year across a broad spectrum of cor-porate America and international groups. His message of going beyond survival and thriving in the face of extreme odds draws not onlyfrom insights derived during his prison experience, but also from experiences like earning a Master of Arts in political science fromUniversity of California, Berkeley; studying at the prestigious National Defense University in Washington, D.C.; numerous Navy com-mand and staff assignments, authoring books; writing a weekly political column; and his continuing interaction with hundreds ofAmerica’s corporations and associations, military units, civic groups and schools as a professional speaker.

Capt. Coffee is a respected commentator on current political and military issues, seeing most challenges in terms of opportunities yetto be seized by heroic leadership. Hehas appeared on cable and networknews, and numerous television andradio talk shows. His bestselling book,“Beyond Survival,” was also condensedby Readers Digest, and is in its fifthprinting. His story was made into anaward-winning play, “Prisoner.”

He and his wife, Susan, a journalist, reside in Aiea, Hawaii. Between themthey have 6 adult children, 9 grandchil-dren and 2 yellow Labs. Their lanai (aHawaiian veranda) overlooks PearlHarbor and Camp Smith, where a giantAmerican flag dedicated to America’sPOWs and MIAs waves 24/7.

Alabama Trucking Associ

ation

Workers’ Compensation Fu

nd Members

Dear Ladies and Gentlem

en:

Enclosed you will find a co

py of the Summarized Audi

ted Financial Statements of

the Alabama Trucking

Association Workers’ Comp

ensation Fund for the year e

nded December 31, 2012.

The Auditors conducted th

eir

audit in accordance with U

.S. generally accepted aud

iting standards. Those stan

dards require the Auditors

to plan

and perform the audit to o

btain reasonable assurance

about whether the financi

al statements are free of ma

terial

misstatement. Upon the c

ompletion of all necessary

examination of the eviden

ce supporting the amounts

included

in these financial statemen

ts and assessing the accoun

ting principles used and sig

nificant estimates made by

man-

agement, the Auditors dete

rmined that their audit prov

ided a reasonable basis for

issuing their opinion. The

ir

opinion concluded that the

se financial statements pre

sent fairly, in all material r

espects, the financial posit

ion of

the Alabama Trucking Ass

ociation Worker’s Compens

ation Self Insurance Fund

as of December 31, 2012.

These financial statement

s reflect the Fund has accu

mulated total profits, net o

f distributions, of $17,234

,469

set aside for future retrosp

ective credits to be refund

ed as directed by State Req

uirements of the Alabama

Department of Labor. The

total amount of retrospect

ive credits previously dist

ributed back to participati

ng

members, since inception

of the Fund, is $50,295,74

2. In addition, the Fund w

ill distribute back $4,089,

765 on

January 1, 2013 to respect

ive participating members

with their 2012 calendar y

ear renewals.

This report includes the ov

erall operations of the Fun

d which consists of both o

ur Alabama and Cross Bor

der pro-

grams. The claims losses r

eflected in the Consolidate

d Statement of Income and

Deductions includes loss

reserves which are required

to pay incurred but not rep

orted (IBNR) losses as det

ermined by the Fund’s inde

pend-

ent Actuarial firm. In our

reserving practices, the Bo

ard of Trustees maintains a

very conservative approac

h so

that the Fund is protected f

rom the effects of irregular

occurring claims losses. A

fter having made these yea

r-end

adjustments, the combined

overall operating profit for

the year ended December 3

1, 2012 is $4,840,441. Wi

th the

conclusion of the 2012 cale

ndar year, the Board of Tru

stees is pleased to report th

at we have continued our lo

ng

standing profitable operati

ng performance. The Boar

d wishes to emphasize tha

t its primary goals still rema

in to

protect the financial integri

ty of the Fund while returni

ng profits to participating m

embers.

In closing, we always wis

h to take the opportunity t

o reinforce our loss contro

l emphasis where we belie

ve the

best approach to curbing in

creases in your company’s

operating expenses is to s

trive to maximize your co

mpa-

ny’s emphasis on loss con

trol. To support you in ob

taining this goal, we have

three loss control engineer

s

working in the field, our st

aff legal counsel and our w

ebsite (www.atacompfund

.org) dedicated to assisting

our

participating member com

panies in their loss contro

l and safety program effort

s. We encourage you to t

ake

advantage of these resour

ces at no cost to you and

to remember to always W

ork Safe / Work Smart.

We hope this information

will assist you in evaluatin

g the strength and quality o

f our program.

Respectfully,

Kimble E. Coaker, CPA
