In memory of fellow Old GirlAmber Parker

(17.10.1973-22.09.1990)

Twenty seven years ago a tree was planted at Hamilton Girls’ High School in memory of 17 year old student, Amber Parker; a much loved daughter, niece, cousin and friend, who was taken much too early, in a tragic car accident. The tree prospered but, unfortunately, it had to be cut down late last year for safety reasons. Thankfully, the history of the tree has been preserved.

With the combined efforts of Hamilton Girls’ High School staff and Amber’s mother, Sally Parker, an intimate memorial took place on Thursday, 28th September 2017. A few of Amber’s close family members and friends were welcomed and a ceremony, to bless and plant the miniature Liquid Amber Tree, followed. While the ceremony was quaint, the emotion and gratitude expressed by Amber’s family was immense.

We acknowledge the expertise of our kaumatua, Matua Taki and the beautiful waiata sung by some of our very talented kapa haka girls, and we thank everyone involved for making Amber’s tree memorial the special event that it was.

The sapling is located on the corner of Tristram and Ward Streets, next to the original tree stump.

“If there ever comes a day when we can’t be together, keep me in your heart, I’ll stay there forever”.

They both play for Hamilton Girls Lacrosse. The game was live-streamed on the Australian Lacrosse Network on Saturday night and can still be viewed on their Facebook page.

2017 MAORI AND PASIFIKA AWARDS

Warm Pasifika Greetings,As we near the end of the school year, the Pasifika Mentoring team wants to take the time to give thanks. To Mrs Gordon, thank you for your continued support in expecting excellence in all that Pasifika undertakes. You have encouraged us to always aspire to be the best we can be. To the teachers, thank you to those who have worked closely with the girls in the Pasifika Mentoring Programme. There has been marked improvement in grades and attitudes to learning. To the Pasifika Council, thank you for accepting the invitation to serve the Pasifika students, which you did with aplomb.

The reason for these acknowledgments is that we have celebrated another year of success at the recent Sports, Maori and Pasifika, and Arts Awards evenings. Thank you to all who participated. We recognised and applauded the fruits of diligence in service, leadership, culture, academics and sport. At the Maori and Pasifika Awards we were inspired by guest speaker Louisa Wall who based her remarks on our school motto. Indeed, she challenged all of us to be confident, competent and curious. When we consider the successes celebrated that evening, her words were an encouragement to always strive to be the best. From the Arts Awards we were reminded again, that our Pasifika girls are musically blessed as they joined with members of the kapa haka roopu to perform a beautiful Maori and Samoan rendition of the Leonard Cohen masterpiece “Hallelujah”.

Very soon we farewell our Year 13 students. As such, we wish you all the best in your future endeavours. We will miss you but will watch with interest, as you take the next steps in your personal life journeys. Keep in touch, give back to your community and strive to do your best, always.

The Pasifika Mentoring Team

INTERNAL ASSESSMENTGrade Appeals: Monday 6th November is the last day a student can appeal against any NCEA internally assessed grades.Handing Work in after the stated deadlineIf a student is handing in work after an assessment deadline then they must submit this to the student office and complete the signing in process. The school will take no responsibility for late work not handed in this manner, as it will not be possible to prove that the work was submitted, in case there was a dispute.

EXTERNAL EXAMINATIONS

- Students must wear their uniform correctly to their external exams. They will not be able to line up with the other students if they are not in the correct uniform. They will have to wait until all other students have entered their examination rooms before their uniform situation can be resolved. This may mean they could be late for the start of their examination.- Students will line up in the same way they did for the school examinations. However, this time the handwritten number beside their name will represent the desk that they will sit at. In the examination room there will be a desk with their number on it and it will contain their personalised examination papers.- Students who are not in their correct lines will have to wait until all the other students have entered their examination rooms before they will be allowed to enter.

DERIVED GRADESA student who has been disadvantaged because of a temporary impairment or a non-permanent disability, close to or during an examination, which has prevented attendance or affected performance in the examination, may apply to NZQA for Derived Grade. Points to note about this:

- A Derived Grade is where NZQA takes a student’s Term 3 Exam results, or authentic topic tests (proper tests done under exam conditions), to substitute as their external examination result.- NZQA require that all applications must be made through Mr Mitchell (NZQA liaison)- You can contact Mr Mitchell as follows: o During the examination period Mr Mitchell will be available each day in the NZQA liaison office (located upstairs in the Atrium) from 11am to 12 pm and 2:30pm to 3:10 pm. o Alternatively, you can make an appointment by contacting the school office. They will take your name and Mr Mitchell will contact you to organise an appointment. o E-mail [email protected] OR phone 07 839 1304 EXT 839- NZQA require a student to complete a Derived Grade form (available from Mr Mitchell) and provide documented evidence from a suitably qualified professional (e.g., doctor in the case of illness) of the serious disadvantage.- NZQA recommend where possible that students still sit their examinations and then apply for a derived grade. The better of the two grades (derived and actual) will be taken as the student’s final result if their application is successful.- All completed applications must be submitted to Mr Mitchell by Monday 4th December.

ADMISSION SLIPS- Students will need a NZQA admission slips to enter their examination rooms. Students will not be allowed into their examination rooms without one.- Students tutor group teachers will give out the NZQA admission slip in the second week of this term.- Students can get a copy of their admission slip from Student Reception. This could take up to fifteen minutes if there is a long queue, so students will need to be at the school at 8:30am for morning examinations and 1:00pm for afternoon examinations if they do not have their admission slip with them.- Students should load their exam times onto your phone to help remind you when they are on.- Students are not to write anything on their admission slip. Students will not be allowed into the exam room if there is any writing whatsoever on their admittance slip. This is an NZQA rule. If this happens, then students will be told to go to student reception and get a replacement. This may mean they may be late to the start of their exam.

Water Bottles- Must be clear pump bottles and stored only on the floor. All labels must be peeled off the bottles. Any bottles with writing of any sort will be confiscated until the end of the exam.

Watches- No watches are allowed as they could be SMART.

Calculators- Students need to know how to clear their calculators and reset the functions. This is so they can reset them in front of the Mr Mitchell. If they cannot do this, then someone will have to be called upon to clear the calculator, this may make the student late to their exam. - If a student brings a second calculator into the room for use, in case their main one fails, it must then be stored in your emergency pack under their chair until required. It must also have been presented for clearance before the exam starts.

Cell phones (and wallets)- Students are to turn their cell phones off and put them, and their wallets, into a clear plastic bag with a valuables slip. The school will provide students with a plastic bag and a valuables slip. These will be made available to students when they line up for their exams. - Students will place their plastic bags with their valuables under their desks. A students exam will be terminated if they handle the bag during the examination. - If cell phone rings during the exam then it will be confiscated until the end of examination period (End of February 2018). It will then be available for students to pick up from the student office.- The Exam Centre Manager will not look after other valuables such as wallet, i-pods, etc.
