Activity nº3: Using PENZU: Writing a diary of our friends in an original and interesting way

OBJECTIVES

• To be able to characterize each person using adjectives and the correct use of grammar structures.

• To describe your friends’personality, comparing all of them. • To be able to manage the website: writing your description and including photos.• To realize that with PENZU,“writing” is not as boring as we think.• To share your work with your classmates and discuss any other alternative or

suggestions to improve your written work.

TASKS

where you have the explanation and an example to help you.

- Start your work with this title: THESE ARE MY FRIENDS

- Now, write the name of your friend. For example: This is Maria and I have uploaded a photo of her.

Activity nº2: Using GOANIMATE: Creating interesting and funny stories

OBJECTIVES:

• To use your imagination.• To relate different experience in your life to the assignment.• To use a website to create stories.• To be critic not only on your own but on the other classmates.• To practise English in all your work.

• Given a situation, create an animation using a setting, characters and voices(your written words):

- Situation : Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth from Pirates of the Caribbean. Jack is apologizing for something he has done to her. He really regrets having done such a thing. She is disappointed and at the same time angry.

This is the last part: First of all choose the characters’ voice. They should be british! Now you have to create the situation. Remember the situation described before ( Jack is apologizing for something...) So imagine what he could have done and why, how, during the conversation he will succeed in his objective. It should be shown the beginning of the conversation (how they greet to each other) her reaction to his questions or statements, etc. And how she will accept his apology and why. If you want to add other things they will be welcome but the requirements before mentioned should be present. The film should last between 2-3 minutes. Not less than that!

• The animation should include all the items required. The language to use is free, with this, I mean that you can use all the knowledge of language you know but of course avoid using inappropriate words/phrases, etc.

• After this, you will have to present the work to your classmates explaining what you have thought of and why and then autocritize yourself on your weakness and strongest points and your classmates’ ones.

Evaluation Criteria

• Appropriate use of language.• The inclusion of all the items required in the assignment.• Students’ fluency and accuracy on their oral exposition.• The lenght of the video.• The time students have taken to the assignment. The production, basically.• The use of the website in the correct form. Not using it for other reasons.

Activity nº1: Using ANIMOTO: Working with different kinds of Vertebrates animals

OBJECTIVES:

• To learn about different Vertebrates Animals.• To work in groups.• To use Power Point to present the work• To use Word to hand in the work.• To use Internet to present assignments.• To use English to talk about Science.

TASKS

• In groups of four choose one type of animals. Make sure that all the groups have a different category to avoid repetition:

- Mammals

Vertebrates - Reptiles

- Amphibians

- Birds

- Fish

• Once each group has its category, start choosing eight animals. So each group will deal with eight animals from the category chosen.

• In your group, each student will be in charge of two animals. So by this, I mean that each student will talk about the animals (talking about their characteristics, habitat, what they eat, etc; all the necessary information) To do this, you have to find out information in the Internet or encyclopedias. Remember to download a picture of each animal as you will use them later.

• You will have to present your assignment in a power point presentation and then, you have to hand in it in a word document.

• You are going to present your work following these steps:

- With Animoto, present the eight animals with pictures and images. Include a title and a brief description.

- One student will talk about the category of the animal chosen and then you will present the whole assignment with Power Point. Include pictures and if you want, videos; which would be great.

Evaluation Criteria

• Develop the right topic and not others.(if I have asked ANIMALS, do not write your assignment on TREES or something else).Correct use of vocabulary in the oral part, being accurate and fluent.

• Properly use of the computer and the website. Follow all the items requested. • Correct use of Power Point and Word. • Be specific and brief. Relevant.• The reading material: all the students should know all the work despite the fact that

it is divided into the members.

Creating animated phrases with PHRASR

Phrasr is an interactive web-based application that uses Flickr images to illustrate the phrases that users submit. They can choose every image and then publish the entire phrase, which is shown as a personal slide show.

I've chosen this website because I find it fun and interesting!Students would enjoy writing their favourite phrases or short poems with pictures that represent them.

HOW TO DO THIS?

It is very easy.! Go to http://www.pimpampum.net/phrasr/ and where it says WRITE A PHRASE, write the phrase, poem, or whatever you want. Then clic on start. The website will choose different images that match with every single word of your phrase. You can change the images if you want. After this, you can create a name of your work with your name too. Clic on PUBLISH

In my example the short poem is:

“If I could have just one wish, I would wish to wake up everyday to the sound of your breath on my neck, the warmth of your lips on my cheek, the touch of your fingers on my skin, and the feel of your heart beating with mine... Knowing that I could never find that feeling with anyone other than you”

So I wrote it and then, I change the images where it was necessary for me!

What is really interesting about PHRASR is that you can write a title and your name because there is an ARCHIVE where all the phrases created by everyone are saved. It is fantastic!

Writing a diary online with PENZU

Penzu is a journal you can write on line. Regular writing is perhaps one of the best habits for budding writers to engage in. With Penzu, you can keep a diary online that's entirely private, or share it with others selectively.

It is not necessary to create an account to use it, but unfortunately, your files will not be saved! So my advice would be to create an account. Is very easy! I will help you below how to do it.

I've chosen this website because it is another way to make our students write, as it is funnier and attracks the students’ attention. It also changes their minds that WRITING is a boring task. With Penzu, the students love writing. Apart from that, you can add images and change the lay-out of the journal sheet.

HOW TO DO THIS?

Go to http://www.penzu.com. As I have said before, it’s better that you create an account because all your work will be saved. So clic on SIGN UP: CREATE YOUR FREE JOURNAL. You will fill in with your personal information and then, Clic on I AGREE ON THE TERMS OF USE AND PRIVACY POLICY and finally SUBMIT. You will receive an e-mail in which the website PENZU welcomes you.

So now let’s see how to create a journal. Go to http://www.penzu.com again. Clic on LOG IN. Write your e-mail and password and then, LOG IN.

You will see a picture like a cover of a book, clic on YOUR NAME’S JOURNAL.(in my case is FLORENCIA’S JOURNAL)

Now you will see the sheet of paper to write whatever you want. You can add photos, print your work, change the format, etc. In my example, I have uploaded photos from my computer.It’s wonderful! Try it! It’s fantastic!

Creating animation with GOANIMATE

Goanimate is a very easy online animation tool to use. It has separated programmess which help us on creating characters which is very useful. You can operate it easily by just "Drag", "Drop" and "Click". GoAnimate allows you to create characters, add music, add audio/voice-over, add props, add animation FX and sound effects. I have chosen this website because it really attracks my attention its creativity and wonderful and funny animation to create using our own imagination. I find it useful because it fosters students to use the foreign language in a more entertainment way!

Go to http://goanimate.com/ . As you do not have an account go to REGISTRATE.

You will see two options, choose the first one GOANIMATE BÁSICO and clic on CREAR UNA CUENTA BASICA.

Complete with your personal information and then clic on REGISTRATE.

You will receive an e-mail in which your account in goanimate is validated. So go to your e-mail account. Open the e-mail and clic on the link to check the validation.

Now go to http://goanimate.com/ but now clic on INICIAR SESION. Complete with your data and then iniciar sesión.

Clic on MAKE A MOVIE and you will see different characters and backgrounds. Choose the one you like (be sure it is free) In the example I’ve chosen ARRRRRRRRRRR! With Jack Sparrow. So clic on MAKE A SKIT.

Go to SIGUIENTE. In this section you have to choose, first, the setting.

Then, the characters, I’ve chosen Jack and Elizabeth. You can choose the ones you like best.

And finally, in this section, you can create the dialogue between the characters. You have different languages to choose and within that, different voices.

So, once you have finished with the setting, the characters and the dialogue, clic on PREVISUALIZATION and then you can save it. Your video is ready.

Creating videos with ANIMOTO

Animoto is a video maker website where users can create a video by uploading photos and images of their own. I have chosen this website because it is interesting and completely creative. I find it useful because students can present their assignments or even show their personal lives via photos in an original and fantastic way!

HOW TO DO THIS?

First go to http://animoto.com. You have two options SIGN IN or SIGN UP.

As you do not have an account yet, clic on sign up. Then four options appear, choose the first one which is FREE (it’s called LITE).

After this, you will see CREATE ACCOUNT and then you will have to complete with your personal information. Once you have finished, clic on SIGN UP and then you will receive an e-mail in the account you have written with the information you need to log in in ANIMOTO (user and password) and some issues to be taken into account before starting creating videos.

Go to your e-mail account and open the mail and you will see your personal information about the account.Now you have your account in Animoto available.

So now go to http://animoto.com again and clic on SIGN IN. Complete with your name and password and then you will be inside the website. Now let’s see how to create a video. I will show how to upload photos from two different ways.

Clic on Create video. You will see a title called PICK A VIDEO STYLE. Choose the one you like best ( of course be sure it is free). In the first example, I chose EARTH.

Below the option PURCHASE VIDEO, there is another option, clic on that (MAKE A 30 SECOND VIDEO FOR FREE)

Now you will see the options to create your video. First of all, choose the title of it. So at the bottom, where you see UNTITLED PROJECT, clean that and write the one you want.I chose “AT THE ZOO”

Then, clic on add pics and videos. You will see four options. First let’s choose the second one that says retrieved from FACEBOOK, wait a few seconds and then all your folders in your facebook account will appear. Choose the one you want. Clic on the album and the on “add photos”. You will see all the photos on the screen. You can reorder them or not.

The other option was: when you clic on ADD PICS, choose the last option “From our collection” and you have different lists and also videos to choose.

Now let’s choose the music. Clic on CHOOSE MUSIC.Decide the type of music and then choose a song from the list. In this case, I chose POP and the song BACK TO MY FEET AGAIN. Then clic on add song.

If you want, you can add text. Clic on ADD TEXT and write.

After this, clic on PRODUCE VIDEO. You will receive and e-mail when the video is ready. So check your e-mail account, if you have received it, open it and clic on WATCH VIDEO.

Welcome to my blog!

My name is Florencia Espósito. I am studying to be a teacher of English. At this moment I have a subject called ICT and our teacher, Paula Ledesma, asked us to create a blog or a wiki where you find different web 2.0 tools to work with your students.

As you can see, I have chosen a blog as it has some characteristics that, to me are better than wikis.

Whereas blogs can only be edited by their owners or creators, a wiki allows any user to edit, delete or modify content that has been placed in it

Although many wikis nowadays are protected and monitored by their creators, anybody who registers to a wiki account may be allowed to contribute and to edit the content included in the wiki. And due to the

fact that anybody may have access to editing a page within websites like Wikipedia, the information you can find there may not always be reliable. Going back to blogs, I really like them because you can share a lot of things and it is good to incorporate them in our classes as we post our students’ work.
