The theme this year is Celebrating Local Heroes. I would like to acknowledge the wonderful work of the dedicated staff working at our school. Students are given many opportunities each day and staff work long hours to ensure that all students are given the best education possible. We hope to see everyone at the Heroes Art Show this afternoon and tomorrow morning. Thank you to our talented students and staff for putting the show together and to Mrs Kelly and Mrs Troup for organising the event. Public Speaking School representatives will compete in the Regional Public Speaking Finals over the next couple of weeks. Good luck to all our finalists. ES1 - Talmage Little S1 - Christian Morison and Sharni Halasan S2 - Quinn Denniss and Ella McDonald S3 - Jordan Blundell and Oliver Redhead Coming to School on Time With mornings being a little colder it is sometimes difficult to get out of bed in the morning. This term we have had many students consistently arriving late for class. This is causing concern for both the students and the class. While half an hour may not seem to be a huge amount of time, it adds up and it has an unsettling effect on the student and the class. Continued partial absences need to be reported to the Home School Liaison Offer (HSLO). Parents that are having difficulty with getting students to school on time should contact the school for assistance. Changes to Details Sometimes it is necessary to contact parents by telephone and often the numbers are out of date. Please contact the office to update your records if phone numbers or your address has changed. Court Orders Sometimes relationships break down and the court makes orders that change the contact parents can have with their children or the role they play in making decisions about their children’s education. These can be Family Court Orders or Apprehended Violence Orders. Parents can also reach agreement about issues such as contact in a parenting plan. If this happens it is important that you provide the school with a copy of any court orders or plan that could impact on your child’s education. In the absence of any notification to the contrary, the school will assume that both parents continue to retain a shared and equal parental responsibility for their children and should be involved in making any decisions regarding their children’s education. National Tree Day Planet Ark celebrated 20 years of National Tree Day and Schools Tree Day last week - Australia's largest community tree planting and nature care event. Tree Day is an opportunity to do something positive for your local environment and community and to reconnect with nature. National Tree Day started in 1996 and since then more than 3 million people have planted 21 million trees and plants across Australia. Stage 3 students walked to Stevenson Park last Friday to assist Newcastle City Council plant trees in the nature strip. Following this students were treated to a barbeque lunch and got up close with some insects and reptiles during the ‘Blackbutt to You’ program. National Tree Day aims to inspire, educate and recruit Australians to actively care for our unique land and create future generations of committed environmental custodians. Students from Mayfield West certainly demonstrated this last week. Well done!
