7:13 pm Welcome

Heidi: On behalf of our host province this year, Beautiful British Columbia, I’d like to welcome all of you here. We are so glad that you have come to meet, to worship, to refresh old friendship’s and kindle new ones. To learn new things, stretch some comfort zones as well as connect to the security of deep, stable roots. I, along with others, who will introduce themselves shortly, will be leading you in worship throughout the week. I am Heidi Epp. I live in Richmond and attend Peace Mennonite, where I enjoy the privilege of leading the church choir, serving as a worship leader, participating on music teams and working with our Sunday school children. I have one daughter named Gabriella whom you’ve already met. She was the shortest dancer in our call to worship and has been waiting with great anticipation for at least 6 weeks to be here. She just turned 6 and graduated Kindergarten last week!

Heidi: As this is the year the youth are also having assembly, we thought we would get together to worship a little more, so each morning we will meet here in this gym to worship together. The morning singing will begin at 8:30 am sharp. We will use that time to wake you up and teach you some new music from the new hymnal supplement called “Sing the Story”. You should have received a copy in your registration pack. The service will officially start at 8:45 am. Please remember to bring you Song books with you for worship.

Katie: Our theme this year is “Built to Last” based on I Corinthians 3:11. There are six sub themes, one for each worship service. You can see on our Innukshuck that there is a symbol on each stone. Each symbol represents one of the themes. The Innucksuk is the symbol for being built to last, standing to be a testimony for all time to Christ our redeeming savior. We are going to teach you the sign language for the theme for each service, accumulating through the week, building on to our “Built to Last” liturgy with each service. We’ll start with the first one. Heidi will demonstrate the sign and then we will read together.

7:20 pm “Built to Last” Liturgy” (Heidi sign)

Jason: The choir from Peace Mennonite will Sing “O Sifuni Mungu” in celebration of all God has done for us and continues to do. They have a guest drummer with them this evening, Dieter Krause from Sherbrooke Mennonite in Vancouver, who graciously agreed to join them.

7:26 pm Congregational Singing (I think we need to drop one out of this set)

7:37 pm Heidi: During the next hymn, the adults are going to make their way from this gym to the middle school gym to continue to worship. You will know that it is time to leave when you see me head for the back doors. It is a short walk around the corner of this gym to the next one. If you follow like sheep and keep singing, then no one will get lost. We’ll cross the Jordon and see you on the other side!

“King of Kings and Lord of Lords” (Trilingual)

7:40 pm Adults leave the gym to go to the adult worship space during song

8:25 pm Offering

The offering this evening will be designated for pastoral and leadership development, meeting Mennonite Church Canada’s priority of “Growing Leaders for the Church.” MC Canada is working closely with our related institutions of higher education to develop training programs and resources that empower the church at every level for the work to which God calls us. We thank-you for your partnership in committing tonight’s gifts to the highly valued work of pastoral leaders. In appreciation of this work, Kathy and Charla O’Neill, my brother Chris Epp, and I would like to offer our arrangement of “Be thou my vision” during the collecting of the offering. We are all from Peace Mennonite. Let’s pray.

Lord God, thank-you for your faithfulness, and for the way you provide for your church, and its servant leaders. We bring these offerings to you this evening and ask for your blessing upon them. May you use them to nurture and develop your vision in our pastoral leadership for MC Canada and to each of us as we serve in your congregations. Amen.

9:10 am Introduce Hand Washing ceremony at stations.

Heidi: As we were planning the worship for this assembly, we felt it was important to find a special way of marking our time together and to respond to the covenant that God has called each of us to enter. So as an act of servant hood we thought we would have a hand washing ceremony. You will notice there are rock stations with bowls of water around the room. We would like to invite you to come forward with a friend or two, old or new and as Jesus washed the disciple’s feet, serve each other by washing each other’s hands. Share a word of thanksgiving, of blessing or encouragement with each other and then return to your seats. We will be singing together to give everyone enough time to participate. Children are also invited to participate. Parents may want to go up with your children. Let’s pray together

Leader 1: God you have tenderly shaped and molded us with your hands.

Leader 2: You have sheltered us under the palm of your hand when we were in the storm

Leader 3: And you have held us in your palm when we needed rest.

Leader 4: And when we have needed it, you have flicked us with your finger to get us to wake up!

Leader 1: Now we bring our own hands back to you.

Congregation: We offer our hands as cradles of love and kindness We offer our hands as tools for peace and justiceWe offer our hands and our hearts as instruments of your hope and grace.

Leader: May our hands and our lives be a testimony of your great love, giving you blessing and honor in all ways.

9:28 am Announcements, Thank-you’s to youth worship leaders and music team.

Heidi: The Innukshuck’s that you have pondered on all week, were designed and built by a group from Peace Mennonite. I’d like to name and thank them. In charge of the project and designer was Liana Nickel, who was hands on all the way through, including designing our icons for each worship service. Laura Sportack, Kevin and Jenna MacAlary, Laura Klassen and Gerry Sportack helped with the carving. Gerry was the lucky one who got to use the chainsaw. Laura also helped with the painting along with Jesse Nickel. Jesse also did structural work. Dieter Nickel provided Dowel system and structural advice and Rich Niebuhr provided plywood bases. If you are wondering about the name connections, it goes like this, Laura and Gerry are parents to Liana, who is married to Jesse, son of Dieter, and recently retired youth pastor to Kevin , Jenna and Laura. Rich is friend to all! Young people all former piano students of mine. (I just thought I’d through that in for you as a point of interest) The twelve pillars of stone also came from Peace Mennonite, designed by myself, built by Jim Niebuhr and secret angels and painted by myself and mom and dad. Who do have names, Corni and Lottie Epp.

9:30 am Benediction

Heidi: Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to the gospel of Christ Jesus, according to the revelation of the mystery which was kept secret for long ages, but is now disclosed and through scripture is made know to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith – to the only wise God be glory for evermore through Jesus Christ our cornerstone. Heidi: This evening, we want to give thanks to those who have completed their terms of service. Would those who have completed their service as staff, on council, and boards and those who have assisted with Assembly planning please stand.

Leader: Thank you for giving so generously of your time and gifts, for faithfully serving, even when it was not convenient. God called you into a building partnership. Through you, with the gifts that God has equipped you with, God has been building Mennonite Church Canada as a “Spiritual house”, a church. A church built on Christ the one foundation, built to last. God will continue to bless your dedication and labour.

Left: We thank you for responding to God’s call.

Right: We thank you for offering your talents and time.

Left: We thank you for your gifts of discernment and wise leadership.

Right: We thank you for your grace and generosity.

Together: We thank you for your commitment and labor of love.

Leader: We pray together that God will continue to multiply and bless the work of your hands so that the blessing will flow to the far corners of the globe.

Leader: Could all staff and mission workers, and those who are continuing to serve as well as those who are newly appointed to councils and boards please stand.

Leader: God has called and equipped you to serve together in the building of the church. We affirm you for your willingness to answer God’s call. The Scripture says, “Let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. Build our spiritual house on the solid rock so that it will be built to last.

Congregation: Have you heard God’s call to the work of building the church?

Elected andAppointed leaders: We have responded to God’s call.

Congregation: Will you seek to work using the gifts that God has supplied for the building of the church? Will you serve with humility, regarding each other as gifts of God and will you up-hold one another in support and prayer?

Elected andAppointed leaders: God helping us we will.

Will you as brothers and sisters in the community of faith support us as we serve?

Together: O Lord of the church, you have called us and equipped us for your service in a broken world. Build us together to be a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, that we may bring beauty for brokenness, offering ministry and service to one another and to those who are across our streets and around our world. Send us, O Lord, to the congregations, conference and areas of ministry to which you have called us. Give us courage and endurance. Build among us a unity that will outlast our differences. Enable us to love one another with the love of Christ.

Leader: O lord our God, you have blessed us to be a blessing. Bless these words of covenant that we have spoken today. Send us out with joy to do your bidding.
