COVER ART CONTEST - Open to all current students

Create an image based on a musical theme to be featured on the cover of the Abbotsford Music Festival 2018 Program. Image can be drawn, painted, photographed, or created using digital media (graphic design).

Deadline for submissions is FEBRUARY 1, 2018. Entry form on page 18 Please send artwork and submission form to festival registrar - Beth Nickel.

PLEASE NOTE: The release statement on the submission form must be signed. This gives permission to the Abbotsford Music Festival for the use of photo images of the applicant as well as use of the artwork without charge for the limited purpose for three (3) years of Festival promotion (i.e. pictures displayed at the Festival venue, program, newspaper or on abbotsfordmusicbcrmta.com)

HONOURS CONCERT & AWARDS PRESENTATION

All trophies, scholarships, and awards will be presented at the Honours Concert. May 12, 2018 - 7:00 p.m.

The Festival committee will notify teachers regarding their student(s) participation in the Honours Concert. It is the responsibility of the teachers to contact their student(s).

• No copied scores will be accepted for competition, an original is required for the adjudicator at the Performance Venue.

• A letter is required from any publisher who has given permission for the copying of their work.

VOLUNTEERING

Teachers submitting registrations MUST volunteer, or send a replacement.

• 10 entries (NOT 10 students) or less, a teacher will volunteer 1 session Example: A student registered in a List A class, a List B class and a List C class is 3 entries.

• over 10 entries, volunteer 2 sessions, one of which must be an afternoon • over 20 entries, a teacher may be asked to volunteer an extra session.

REGISTRATION

There are separate forms for Solo, Concert Class, Ensemble and Talent Show. Use one Entry Form for each class entered.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 1st, 2018. Late entries will be accepted until February 8th, 2018 with a $10 surcharge per entry.

STUDENTS AND TEACHERS: Double-check the festival dates BEFORE YOU SUBMIT THE ENTRIES to make sure there are no conflicts.

All pertinent information must be provided and payment enclosed or the entry will be refused. Any registration forms submitted with post-dated cheques cannot be processed.

It is the teacher’s responsibility to ensure registrations are accurate and complete to avoid disqualification.

Teachers - please ensure your students have all the correct info if they are doing their own online registration. Names of selected works cannot be changed at any time after the Festival Registrar has received the entry.

In the unfortunate event of an error in registration, the student will be permitted to perform non- competitively (no marks or placement given). This may affect play-off participation.

THE FESTIVAL CANNOT MAKE CHANGES OR REFUND REGISTRATION FEES.

PAYMENT OPTIONS

All payment must be made received by the deadline or the entry will be refused. Payment can be made by Paypal, credit card, e-transfer, or personal cheque.

PROGRAM

Included in the registration fee is a complimentary program for each participant (one per family). A committee member will connect with each teacher to arrange pick-up of the programs for his/her participating students. Official programs will be ready April 1, 2018. These will be available in music stores, from members of the Festival Committee, or at the door during the Festival. The program will also be posted online at abbotsfordmusicbcrmta.com and can be downloaded.

PIANOThe student must be a resident of Abbotsford, be studying with a teacher who resides in Abbotsford, or be studying with an Abbotsford BCRMTA branch member.

NO REHEARSALS ALLOWED AT FESTIVAL VENUES.

MUSIC SCORES

Each competitor must have his/her own copy of music, not share with another competitor in the same class.

An original score of the music must be provided for the adjudicator. If music is used by the performer, please bring two (2) original scores.

Photocopies of the music without proper authorization will cause the student to be disqualified. To use a legal digital or downloaded music score, proof must be presented before performance.

Students are expected to perform by memory. TWO (2) marks will be deducted if music score is used. EXCEPTION: Studies and Popular Studies do not need to be memorized.

CERTIFICATES AND MARKING

The adjudicator’s mark will reflect compatibility to the criteria and grading practices of the ROYAL CONSERVATORY of MUSIC EXAMINATIONS. Marking will designate first, second and third place winners allowing for tied placement as needed.

Every student will receive a certificate of participation. Certificates will not be publicly awarded but will be included with the adjudication sheet in the returned copy of the student’s musical score. The Festival assumes no responsibility for music, adjudication sheets or certificates left by competitors.

No competitor, parent, teacher or member of the public may approach or speak to the adjudicator for reasons of conflict of interest. The adjudicator’s decision is final and will not enter into any discussion regarding their decisions. This may result in disqualification. All concerns must be addressed to the Festival committee.

AWARDS

The adjudicator(s) and the Festival committee are responsible for award decisions. To be eligible for awards and trophies, competitors must have met BOTH of the following requirements:

• competed in a minimum of 2 solo competitive classes or in a Concert Class AND • achieved a 1st place with a mark of 80% or higher, in at least one of the classes.

*NEW* OWN CHOICE CLASSES no longer has an award. Own Choice entries will still meet the 2 class requirement to be considered for other awards.

EXCEPTION: The Juleen Bawtinheimer Memorial Inspiration Scholarship is open to all competitors regardless of number of classes entered or placement.

PLAY-OFFS

Awards are at the discretion of the Adjudicator and Festival Committee.

PRIMARY AND JUNIOR CATEGORIES: THERE WILL BE NO PLAY-OFFS.

INTERMEDIATE AND SENIOR CATEGORIES: PLAY-OFF CLASSES WILL APPLY. To advance to play-offs a competitor must have:

1. Achieved 1st place with a mark of 80% or higher 2. Competed in a minimum of 2 solo competitive classes or a concert class (For concert class play-offs,

the Competitor may be required to play one or all pieces at the adjudicator’s choice).

PIECE SELECTION All selections must be from a current recognized syllabus.

Royal Conservatory of Music 2015 Edition or Conservatory Canada. Popular Studies must be from the current 2015 Edition (available on line at rcmusic.ca)

NO STUDENT MAY ENTER TWO (2) LEVELS/GRADES.

No student may enter two (2) classes of the same category (i.e. Romantic, Classical, etc.) with different Syllabi.

Participants are NOT eligible to play in the same level/grade or lower grade in the Festival than the level/grade previously passed in examinations. Please note: Registering for an exam session pre-dating the Festival (i.e. April session) makes a student ineligible to compete in that grade.

Students playing a split Level/Grade 10 exam may compete in the area in which they have not yet been examined.

If a competitor wins in a class, they cannot compete in that class in the next year. However, if they have not yet played the RCM exam of that level/grade they may still compete in that level/grade, but in different classes than those in which they won. Exception: Level/Grade 9 thru ARCT can compete in a class they won the previous year provided they enter with a new selection.

One selection only per class, or as stipulated in the syllabus. The syllabus will state in some cases to play multiple or consecutive movements.

Repeats, 1st and 2nd endings, D.C. al Fine, should follow RCM performance guidelines.

Candidates may enter TWO (2) Etude/Study Classes at the Level/Grade 3 and above. Please follow the guildlines set by RCM.

CANADIAN compositions must be entered in a Canadian category.

OWN CHOICE - This category could be used when a competitor wishes to enter two of the same style of piece, (for example if the performer wishes to play two Canadian pieces, one is entered in a Canadian class and one in the own choice class). Own Choice must also comply with the rules of piece selection as stated above.

NEW OPEN CLASS - this category should be used when the registrant wishes to perform and receive adjudication for a piece that is not in a syllabus. Examples include – compositions by local composers, pieces from the Creative Canadian Compose, compositions by a teacher, popular music, video game music, etc. This class is NON-COMPETITIVE and does not contribute to the two class entry for solo awards and trophies. A print copy (hand-written acceptable) must be submitted with the application. If the piece has been published, an original or proof of it being a legal copy is required. The festival committee reserves the right to approve entries or adjust levels if necessary.

NON-COMPETITIVE - This category is used for adjudication only, receives no marks and is not eligible for any awards.

OWN COMPOSITION - A print copy (hand written acceptable) must be submitted with the application. Compositions may be submitted online when using online registration. Please include: metronome marking, dynamic markings, expressive indications, pedal if necessary and skeleton fingering for guidance. Candidates may be expected to discuss their composition with the adjudicator. This class is open to piano and strings.

CONCERT CLASSConcert classes are performed in RCM EXAM style. For example - a performer plays the first piece, waits until signaled to perform the second piece, waits until signaled to perform the last piece. A mark will be given for each piece and the averaged mark is entered on the certificate. Please note an averaged mark of 80 must be achieved to advance to the play-offs. STRINGSMust be a resident of Abbotsford, be studying with a teacher who is a resident of Abbotsford, be studying at an Abbotsford music studio or be a student of a member of the Abbotsford branch of BCRMTA.

NO REHEARSALS ALLOWED AT FESTIVAL VENUES.

String students are required to provide their own accompanist. *** Please Note: There is an award for Most Outstanding Student Accompanist for the strings adjudicator’s choice of any eligible student accompanists. Student accompanists must be 19 years of age or younger

MUSIC SCORES

An original score of the music must be provided for the adjudicator. If music is used by the performer, please bring two (2) original scores.

ENSEMBLESAt least one member of the ensemble must be a resident of Abbotsford, be studying with a teacher who resides in Abbotsford or be studying with an Abbotsford BCRMTA branch member.

PIANO & STRING ENSEMBLE: Any combination of piano and strings

STRING ENSEMBLE/ORCHESTRA CONCERT CLASS: A choice of three pieces from three different periods showing contrast in style and mood. TIME LIMIT: 20 MIN.

Choose level based on the average grade level of the group.

TALENT SHOWAt least one member of the entry must be a resident of Abbotsford, be studying with a teacher who resides in Abbotsford or be studying with an Abbotsford BCRMTA branch member.

Open to amateur artists, solo or group in a variety of genres that must have a live or pre-recorded musical component and be family entertainment appropriate. Costumes are encouraged. This could include: Family Band, Garage Band, Dance, Musical Theatre, Instrumental, Vocal, or Comedy.

NO REHEARSALS ALLOWED AT FESTIVAL VENUES.

Category to be entered is determined by average age of the group.

Songs must be appropriate for a family audience. Offensive lyrics may result in disqualification. Contestants are expected to wear family appropriate attire.

If you are bringing a pre-recorded back-up tape or CD, you must provide the means to play the back-up. The Festival will not provide a sound system.

TIME LIMIT - 5 minutes, including set-up.

MUSIC SCORES

Talent show competitors are encouraged but not required to provide a music score.

If the performers are playing with music, all music used must be an original score. Any scores or music provided to the adjudicator must be an original score.

Photocopies of the music without proper authorization will cause the entry to be disqualified. To use a legal digital or downloaded music score, proof must be presented before performance.

CERTIFICATES, MARKING, and AWARDS

Talent Show entry does not contribute to the two class requirements for solo awards and trophies.

Gold, Silver, Bronze and Participation Certificates will be awarded, NO marks will be given to competitors.

Competitors will be marked on preparation, skill, presentation and overall entertainment value.

The adjudicator(s) and the Festival committee are responsible for award decisions.

No competitor, parent, teacher or member of the public may approach or speak to the adjudicator for reasons of conflict of interest. The adjudicator’s decision is final and will not enter into any discussion regarding their decisions. This may result in disqualification. All concerns must be addressed to the Festival committee.

THE COMMITTEE RESERVES THE RIGHT TO CANCEL THE TALENT SHOW

ABBOTSFORD MUSIC FESTIVAL

Dear Parent, Congratulations! You have entered your child in Abbotsford’s 19th Annual Music Festival. The Abbotsford Music Festival exists to provide the music students of our community with an adjudicated performance experience serving to both instruct and inspire.

In addition, a festival: ♪ provides students with an opportunity to perform prepared repertoire for an eminent adjudicator.

♪ gives encouragement, builds confidence, improves performance, and gives an opportunity to hear other students.

To help you get the most out of the Festival, the following may be useful: ♪ The Festival runs from April 30 - May 4, 2018. Your child may be scheduled at any time during this period.

♪ DRESS CODE in effect for the Festival: No jeans, No shorts, “slogan” T-shirts or midriffs exposed. Festival is PERFORMANCE: please dress appropriately.

♪ Each performer will be awarded a certificate, which will be in the music book when it is returned to the student.

♪ Memory is expected and music presented must be an original score. If music is used, a 2nd original score will be needed for the adjudicator.

♪ Photocopied music without proper authorization will result in disqualification.

♪ Strings - An accompanist is the responsibility of the student and teacher and must use an original score.

♪ Please note - to be eligible for awards, students must be entered and compete in a minimum of two classes or in concert class. Ensemble, Duet, Trio, Talent Show, Own Composition or Open Class do not count as a 2nd class.

♪ Winners of awards may be required to perform at the Honours Concert and must be prepared to do so. This contact will be made through your teacher.

♪ If you have any questions/concerns about the Festival, please take them to your teacher who will then contact the Festival Committee.

♪ The Festival Committee members and volunteers present at the Festival are not there to provide child care. Please make other arrangements.

♪ The adjudicator cannot hold discussions directly with teachers, parents or students participating in the Festival.

The box of Terms and Conditions that you are asked to check in online registration is to allow us to promote the Festival in the newspaper with photographs of students, to display these photographs in the festival venue, displaying pictures on the festival website and to record the Honours Concert. To do these things, we need your parental permission. It also sets out the requirements for student participation and teacher volunteering.

The waiver that you are being asked to sign on the paper application form is to allow us as teachers to promote the Festival in the newspaper with photographs of students, to display these photographs in the festival venue, displaying pictures on the festival website and to record the Honours Concert. To do these things, we need your parental permission.

1. Please be aware of the different application forms. Make sure you are using the appropriate one.

2. Use the first initial and the composer’s last name – please check spelling of unusual names!

3. The title of the piece should be AS IN THE SYLLABUS – do not translate, etc.

4. Studies are entered by number, NOT by title.

5. Teachers - If you are a member of the BCRMTA and we have your address - just enter your name and phone number - no need to write out the entire address each time.

6. Length of piece is very important for timing of classes. Please calculate timing as the student will play the piece as per RCM requirements.

(Listen to the RCM recordings to get an approximate idea of length) Please round up to the closest 5 sec.

7. Clarification of Piano Senior List D and E categories: • Gr. 9 ‘D’ is Post-Romantic and Early 20th century Repertoire• Gr. 9 ‘E’ is 20th and 21st century Repertoire.

8. A paper Festival application without a parental signature is an INCOMPLETE application and will not be accepted. Please initial in the box under the signature line to indicate that you have read the Parent Letter.

9. Payment can be made by Paypal (online registration), credit card (online), e-transfer, or personal cheque. Multiple entries from a family or teacher may be paid for by a single cheque or e-transfer.

• No copied scores will be accepted for competition, an original is required for the adjudicator at the Performance Venue.

Dr. E.J.Janzen Trophy Devan Greenhouse Trophy Music Appreciation Bursary

Three (3) awards in the General Awards category have specific requirements attached. In order to qualify for these awards,

a student must participate in a minimum of two (2) classes or Concert Class and be recommended by the teacher.

Each teacher is permitted to submit only ONE recommendation for each award.
