Your guide to AgrifairOnce again, the Abbotsford News is proud to present the

offi cial guide to Abbotsford Agrifair, 20 pages of information, photos, and schedules to help make your visit to the “best little country fair” even more enjoyable.

This year, Agrifair is celebrating 102 years of providing country-style family fun. In partnership with the 50th anniver-sary of the Abbotsford Airshow, the slogan for this year’s fair is “where pigs fl y!”

This year’s event features a full lineup of great local enter-tainment, a trade show, plenty of 4-H events, lots of kids’ activi-ties, midway rides and games, stunt bikes and so much more.

The Mighty Fraser Pro Rodeo, always a huge crowd pleaser, returns with some of North America’s best cowboys and cow-girls vying for top prize money. From bareback riding to bulls, there’s always plenty to cheer about.

The Lord Strathcona Mounted Troop will be back to perform and organizers of the annual Abbyfest celebration are plan-

ning a major event to bring a multicultural fl avor to the fair.“The Abbotsford News is proud to be the offi cial media part-

ner with Agrifair once again,” said publisher Andrew Franklin. “This is a great event for the community which both celebrates our agricultural roots and provides an opportunity for fami-lies to enjoy an old-fashioned country fair. Agrifair relies on a dedicated board and hundreds of volunteers to become a success and the News is honoured to play a small part in this century-old tradition.”

Agrifair runs from Aug. 2-6 and admission is $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. Preschoolers are admitted free. Rodeo admission is an extra $5.

Take a look through this 20-page guide to learn about all of the events, dates and times so you can plan out your adven-ture ahead of time.

For full coverage on Agrifair, visit abbynews.com.

Welcome to the best little country fair!

On behalf of the board of directors of Abbotsford Agrifair, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to – where pigs fl y!

With our theme this year, we are recognizing Abbotsford International Airshow’s 50th anniversary.

Agrifair is a long-standing community tradi-tion and we continue to be part of Abbotsford’s family summer activities. Thank you to the City of Abbotsford, BC Gaming, our sponsors and volunteers who help create this fi ve-day event that bridges the gap between “urbanites” and “ruralites.” Agrifair’s board of directors’ goal remains the same: to produce an event that sur-passes the expectations and satisfi es the diverse interests of the public with affordable fun for the whole family!

I extend a warm welcome to all exhibitors from around the province and country. It will be a great time had by all!

A special thank you to 4-H, without which Agrifair would not be able to diversely present the importance of agriculture to our community, neighbours and visitors. Your participation with displays and competitions are not only educa-tional but are thoroughly enjoyable to watch! Don’t forget to put your creative cowboy hat on and decorate your stalls to promote our theme! What fun you will have. Thank you for being part of Abbotsford Agrifair 2012.

Welcome to the show

A message from the mayorAs Mayor of Abbotsford, and on behalf of the

Abbotsford City Council, I am pleased to welcome you to our City in the Country and to the 102nd Abbotsford Agrifair and Mighty Fraser Rodeo…where pigs fl y, in recognition of the Abbotsford International Airshow 50th Anniversary.

Thanks to each of you for contributing to the Abbotsford Agrifair.

It is because of your participation that this year’s fair will be outstanding.

Festivals like the Abbotsford Agrifair give resi-

dents and visitors the opportunity to celebrate our rich farming history and also promote and educate the importance of agriculture in our com-munity.

Without your dedication, Abbotsford Agrifair would not be the success it is.

Our city is proud to be the home of 2012 Ab-botsford Agrifair and I extend a warm welcome to all the exhibitors from around the province and country. I encourage you and your families to not only enjoy all the fair has to offer this year, but also

the City of Abbotsford because there is so much more to our City - whether it is our historic down-town shopping area, wonderful parks, nature trails, The Reach or our recreational facilities. I trust you will get a warm welcome wherever you go.

Best wishes to all the exhibitors.

Yours truly,

Bruce BanmanMayor

It’s that time of year again; the start of the 2012 Abbotsford Agrifair!

Attracting over 36,000 visitors each year, Agrifair has been an important part of community life in the Fraser Valley for over one hundred years. It offers a wonderful opportunity to help bridge the gap between city dwellers and the people living in B.C.’s rural communities.

To honour the Abbotsford Airshow’s 50th an-niversary, this year’s Agrifair theme is “where pigs fl y.”

It’s probably a bunch of hogwash but I’ve heard rumours that the Agrifair’s mascot, Penny the Pig, can fl y.

That wouldn’t surprise me, because I know that she likes to ham it up and hog all of the attention. You’ll have to keep an eye out for her at the fair to fi nd out for yourself.

Abbotsford calls itself “the Agricultural Capital of Canada” for good reason. The farms and agri-businesses in this community contribute over

$1.8 billion toward the local economy. The area is home to over 1,200 farms with the

vast majority being family owned and operated.Earlier this year, the Province launched a new

Agrifoods Strategy as part of the B.C. Jobs Plan. This fi ve-year strategy builds on our worldwide reputation for producing innovative, safe, high quality and great-tasting foods.

The strategy focuses on our strengths, and maximizes the benefi ts and opportunities for B.C. farmers and communities like Abbotsford where agriculture supports one in every fi ve jobs.

A trip to Agrifair can serve as the inspiration for young people to make a future in agriculture. Stop and say hello to the 4-H members at the fair and share their enthusiasm and pride as they show you their latest projects and successes. They are our next generation of farmers.

On behalf of the Province of B.C., I’d like to give a sincere thanks to all the people who help make Abbotsford Agrifair happen each year. It’s their dedication, hard work and commitment to the promotion and showcasing of B.C.’s agriculture industry that makes this fair what it is today.

So take a walk through the fairgrounds and let your senses absorb the tastes and smells of B.C.’s bounty. Visit the exhibits, talk to the producers and learn more about where your food comes from. Enjoy a wonderful day with your family and friends; and share in the fun at “the best little country fair!”

Sincerely,

Don McRaeMinister of Agriculture

Ride with West Coast Amusements Once again West Coast Amusements will

bring a whack of rides for all ages – fun for everyone!

And along with great rides are great prices. Thursday is $2 ride night. If you miss Thursday, then Monday is combo day – when you can buy your gate admission and all-day ride ticket for $24.

Can you hear the screams of joy coming from your family and your wallet? This deal is only available at the gate.

West Coast Amusements is not like your regular carnival troupe. The company is dedicated to being one of the country’s leading travelling amusement companies.

West Coast Amusements is a Canadian company with offi ces and winter quarters in Langley. Company presidents Bingo and Jackie Hauser have lived in Langley for more than 50 years. They specialize in sup-plying amusement equipment to provide safe, clean, family fun at a wide variety of fairs, exhibitions, rodeos, special events and other promotional activities.

They employ approximately 350 people

every year, and have four individual units that travel all over Western Canada and Washington State.

West Coast Amusements was founded in 1962 by Bingo Hauser, who has been in show business since the mid 1940s. Raised and educated in Brandon, Manitoba, Hauser started travelling with carnivals at a very early age, and became well versed in the business by operating a number of rides and concessions.

When he fi rst went out on his own, Bingo started an animal show, which is where the lion in the WCA logo comes from. Bingo eventually sold the animals to zoos, bought a merry-go-round, and gradually built West Coast Amusements into the major midway operation it is today.

Rides to check out at Agrifair will include: Super Shot, Fireball Zipper, Cliff Hanger, Tilt a Whirl, Scooters, Hurricane, Spider, Ferris Wheel, Sizzler, Ghost Party, Dragon Wagon, Raiders, Coaster, Puppie Roll (new), Berry Go Round, Bulgy the Whale and the Crystal Palace Mirror House.

A fun day of career exploration, JobFest at AgrifairAgrifair offers a unique chance for

fairgoers to celebrate the amazing career opportunities for young people in B.C. with Jobfest.

Created through the provincial Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation, the goal of JobFest is to engage with and excite youth,

while delivering labour market information and showcasing six career exploration tools developed by the ministry.

Visitors will be introduced to career options through face-to-face discussions with event presenters, guest speakers, the careers tools, interactive games and other

career-related information.Live rock bands and performers and

both local and headliners acts will provide entertainment on stage throughout the day. Visitors will also receive JobFest giveaways.

JobFest will be open Friday, Aug. 3 from noon to 9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday,

Aug. 3 and 4 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday’s guest speakers will include Dan Stefanson, executive director of Tourism Abbotsford/Tradex at 1 p.m.; Ryan Walter, president of the Abbotsford Heat hockey team at 4:30 p.m.; and Abbotsford Police Deputy Chief Rick Lucy at 6:45 p.m.

Tough enough to wear pinkMighty Fraser Pro Rodeo supports Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation

Are you tough enough to wear pink at a rodeo? On Friday at the Mighty Fraser Pro Rodeo, Tough Enough To Wear Pink

jelly bands will be available by donation with proceeds going to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Rodeo occupies a unique position in modern sports, having devel-oped from an American culture that is rapidly changing. Rodeo is a window into the past, but at the same time it is a unique modern sport with an exciting and interesting atmosphere.

Agrifair has cowgirls and cowboys from across the globe, includ-ing Australia, Brazil and New Zealand. They come looking to score the coveted high points that will carry them on to the rodeo fi nal events in Edmonton and Las Vegas.

There is the utmost respect for both the rider and the animal. Rodeo is a sport and a history lesson, performed with respect to our past.

With the disappearing lifestyle of the western frontier, the popularity of rodeo has grown, and rodeos have spread across the continent. Cow-

boys who had been facing grim prospects can now travel and make a living by rodeo alone.

Agrifair is proud to have this sport and educa-tion available to its community.

There will be three new aspects to the Agrifair rodeo:

Firstly, the seating in the rodeo stadium has all been redone – no more splinters in the backside! This is thanks to a partnership among the City of Abbotsford, Fortis BC, Philps Specialty Services, Mainland Sand & Gravel, Blackwood Building Supplies, Crosby Construction, and the many, many volunteers. However, with upgrades there is always a fl ip side – to enjoy the comforts of this seating will see you spend $5 per person, 12 years and under will be free.

Secondly, there will be beer service available while you enjoy the rodeo performances, and, thirdly, organizers will be offering “super cool” prizes to be won during each performance – don’t lose your entry ticket!

TOP 10 RODEO SUPERSTITIONSAs with every sport, rodeo has its superstitions. Here are the top 10:

1. NEVER SET YOUR COWBOY HAT ON A BED - It could lead to a major injury or even death. This belief comes from the close association of sleep with death (eternal rest) and the dangerous lifestyle of a rodeo cowboy.

2. NEVER WEAR YELLOW IN THE ARENA - This superstition could be contributed to the fact that yellow is not a very popular colour. More likely it’s because yellow is associated with cowardice, so you won’t see too much yellow in the arena.

3 . EAT A HOT DOG BEFORE THE RODEO

4. WEAR DIFFERENT COLOURED SOCKS ON EACH FOOT – Other sports have similar superstitions to this one.

5. ALWAYS SHAVE BEFORE A PERFOR-MANCE – Always clean yourself up for lady luck.

6. NEVER READ YOUR HOROSCOPE ON COMPETITION DAY – This superstition obviously has something to do with tempt-ing your luck.

7. DON’T EAT PEANUTS OR POPCORN – Eating this small and dried food can cause you to choke.

8. NEVER KICK A PAPER CUP AT A RODEO – Paper cups have a tendency to spook horses as they blow (or are kicked) around. This can lead to some pretty bad results.

9. SADDLE BRONC RIDERS SHOULD MOUNT RIGHT FOOT FIRST – This may go back to the Middle Ages, and is a direct link to the modern cowboy from the knight of Medieval Europe, passed from Spanish knights called Caballeros on to the Vaquero and then the cowboy. The theory goes that knights would mount from stands during jousts and would stick their feet in right side stirrups fi rst due to the fact that the left side or sinister side was considered bad or evil.

10. NEVER COMPETE WITH CHANGE IN YOUR POCKET – It might be all you’ll win. Rodeo life is really a tough life. Unlike other sports competitors, rodeo cowboys do not receive a salary. Success is tied to winning and win-ning alone. This hard reality makes cowboys and cowgirls try to give 100 per cent each time they compete, because without the prize money you can’t pay entry fees at the next show.

A fair isn’t complete without a tour through the past at the Pioneer Barn – a walk down memory lane.

The members of the Fraser Valley Antique Farm Machinery Association have a passion for the preserva-tion of historical equipment and household items, and relaying how they operated and were used. The group fi rst played a small role with Agrifair in the early 1980s and has continued to grow since then.

The public can see many of the association’s unique displays, such as cream separating – which was a daily chore for many youngsters in the early days. People can

participate in rope making, a sheave toss, and watch an operating antique sawmill in action. The parade equipment, with a narrated description of when and where it was donated, is generally a hit with the families that have donated the items. The group also has many antique tools on display in the building.

And the day would not be complete without having a cup of coffee and freshly baked pie in the shade.

Be sure to come and see the association’s dedicated volunteers. They are easy to fi nd, in red T-shirts with “Pioneer Corner” on them.

The Mighty Fraser Pro Rodeo is one of the main attractions at Agrifair, and it brings professional cowboys from Australia, South America and across North America to compete for cash and a chance to qualify for their sport’s marquee events.

Roll into Magnuson Extreme Wheels ArenaThe Magnuson Extreme Wheels Arena

will feature a stunt bike demo, a roller derby team, and world class skateboard-ers.

STUNT BIKESThe Trial Stars Bike Demo Team have

been a part of Agrifair for many years. In the past, they have entertained audienc-es in the KidZone (now the Fun Field) with all kinds of really cool bike tricks and stunts.

Arguably the coolest trick they do is ride over top of a teammate lying on the ground. The team is so popular to watch that people are lucky to see this stunt while sitting because usually there are no seats left.

ROLLER DERBYAgrifair welcomes the Reign Valley Vix-

en Roller Derby Team this year. The best way to learn roller derby is to watch. All weekend long, the Valley Vixens will be doing demos, explaining the rules of the game, answering questions, even recruiting new members!

The sport’s origins date back to the 1930s, and roller derby became ex-tremely popular in the 1940s. Modern roller derby is an international sport dominated by all-female amateur teams, in addition to a growing number of male, co-ed, and junior teams. It is being considered for the 2020 Olympics.

The Vixens are a skater-owned and operated all-girl, fl at-track roller derby team. The Vixens participate in bouts all over the Lower Mainland, as well as

in places like Vancouver Island, Central British Columbia, Edmonton, as well as in the States in places California and Las Vegas.

Since being founded in 2007, they have developed into a league of athlet-ic, feisty skaters. Skaters start as Smash Test Betties, where they hone their skills until they are drafted to the senior team.

SKATEBOARDRemember the movie “Back to the

Future” where Michael J. Fox’s character Marty was riding his skateboard through town, catching a ride from the back of a pickup truck? These days we also think of people jumping down stairs, sliding down rails, or blasting themselves out of ramps.

Well, forget that! This is the new future of skateboarding – experienced athletes drawing large crowds with specialized “freestyle” skateboarding.

Freestyle skateboarding requires no ramps, rails or any other special equip-ment other than the skateboard itself. The acrobatic tricks are so different they never cease to amaze people.

The World Round–Up Freestyle Team of Ryan Brynelson, Kevin Harris and Andy Anderson show what they can do in a unique and action-packed show!

Brynelson is the top amateur freestyle skateboarder in Canada. A 20-year-old skater from Delta, he has been perfect-ing his craft under the careful eye of Canada’s fi rst professional skateboarder and 1980s legendary skater Kevin Harris. In less than four years of skate-

boarding, Brynelson took the crowd by surprise when he placed fourth in the amateur division at the 2010 World Championships in Philadelphia.

He then stepped it up a notch at the Freestyle World Round-Up in 2012, where he placed second against top amateurs from Japan, Australia, America and Brazil.

DRIVE ONE EVENTOn Sunday, Agrifair will host a Ford

Drive One event in the parking lot by Rotary Stadium.

Agrifair is a not-for-profi t community organization. The fair can only happen with the generous support of sponsors. Thus the board of directors spends many hours thinking of ways to raise revenues in ways which benefi t both the fair and its sponsors.

Raffl es have been done in the past and this year there is a Drive One event. The board is asking fairgoers to take 10 minutes of their time to drive a vehicle at the fair, so the fair can receive $20 from Ford Canada and local dealer Magnu-son Ford. You can help Agrifair raise up to $6,000.

Think of all the corndogs that would buy!

To top it off, everyone who participates will be entered to win two tickets to Cirque du Soleil’s Quidam at the Ab-botsford Entertainment & Sports Centre this summer.

Steve Dickin makes leap of faith over Jeff Anderson. The two are mem-bers of the Trial Stars bike group which returns to Agrifair this year.

Friday retro night features local legends Stonebolt, a Vancouver band that has been rocking since the 1970s.

AbbyFest Day at Agrifair starts Saturday at 10 a.m. and goes until 4 p.m. This show will feature multiculturalism at its best. 2011 saw the start of Agrifair hosting multicultural entertainment, showcasing much of the

wonderful variety of talent in Abbotsford. Now, partnering with AbbyFest this can only get better.

Three acts – Robyn and Ryleigh, Emily Tay-lor Adams and A.J. Woodworth – will show their country roots Saturday night.

Robyn & Ryleigh, sisters from Langley, discovered at an early age that they had a passion for singing. Robyn was eight years old when she started playing the ukulele and performing with an ensemble. At age 13 she taught herself to play the guitar – it seemed a natural progression – and started writing songs as well.

Ryleigh quickly jumped on board to add beautiful harmonies with her own style and fl avour to make for an irresistible sister act. For the past couple of years they have per-formed on many stages, in festivals, concerts, contests and open mics. The future sure seems

bright for these young rising stars. More about them at www.myspace.com/robynan-dryleigh

Emily Taylor Adams has developed a spe-cial and personal relationship with her fans. Having experienced bullying in her school years, she understands the complexities within the current generation and uses her music to deliver messages that are positive and uplifting – empowering her listeners with a sense of comfort in knowing “there’s no such thing as normal.”

Preparing now for the release of her fourth single, “Keep Your Pants On,” her fans will be introduced to yet another side of Emily as it delivers a message of absti-nence, encouraging young girls to stay true to themselves and remain strong against peer pressure. A.J. Woodworth will wrap up Saturday playing the Wildcard on her debut 604 Records album: she is the “Wild Card.”

When you hear the explosive and pas-sionate chorus of the 2011 British Columbia Country Music Awards’ Female Artist of the Year’s sparkling personal anthem “Wild Card,” you’re hearing the life story behind the ambitious turbo-powered voice:

“This song is my autobiography. I am the ‘Dark Horse!’ I have been the long shot – and I have worked really hard, overcome

Starfi eld headlines Sundaythe odds and pushed through to where I am now.”

Sunday brings Joel Ashbee and Starfi eld.

Langley’s Ashbee won the Praise 106.5 local music contest, which gives him the honour of opening for Starfi eld. His pas-sion is to help people engage in worship through music.

Starfi eld, closing Sunday night and brought to you by Colum-bia Cabinets-Countertops, is an acoustic pop/rock band com-posed of brothers Tim and Jon Neufeld, John Andrews, and Shaun Huberts.

Over the past four years they have recorded two independent albums which have sold more then 20,000 units in Canada alone.

Starfi eld has quickly gained the respect of their peers and the Canadian record industry. In addition, Starfi eld managed to rack up a Juno nomination and 5 Vibes (Canada’s Dove Awards), and the Prairie Music Award for best Christian album.

“The fact that we sold any CDs to more people than just friends and family, or that we won any awards, still blows my mind,” Tim says. “We really just thought it would be fun to record some stuff for memory’s sake. What has happened is just an amazing testimony to God’s faithfulness!”

KidZonebecomes FunField

Don’t forget to check out the FunField.Formerly known as KidZone, FunField has taken on

new life. There is so much to see and do, you could re-ally spend one whole day of the fair in this area.

It will be the home of the Spring Up Trampoline Show. The trampoline is always fun, and has been around for decades. After all, how many of us have one in our backyard, or grew up with one? But to bounce trampo-line while using a wall is comparatively new, and always impressive. This system allows the acrobat to carry out performances where he may walk on a vertical wall, enter by a window, or land on the roof and bounce back on the trampoline. The trampo-wall was a great success at the fair last year, and is back for one more year.

There will also be a stage full of entertainment brought to the fair by A&D Music of Abbotsford. This stage has Gary Savard of “Now That’s Magic.” Savard has been a loyal supporter of Agrifair for many years, and his magic show just gets better each year.

Saturday night A&D Music will present “the Showcase of Young Musicians,” which is exactly what the name suggests.

The layout for the FunField has changed as well. It is almost like a trade show format. As you walk into the fi eld be sure to grab your drinks and popcorn, and get ready to settle in.

The Rock Wall is waiting. Call of Paintball lets people shoot off a few rounds, and they can walk on water with Krazy Balls – imagine you’re a hamster in a large ball roll-ing around on the water!

There are so many activities going on, it will be a great time in the FunField.

Agri fun at AgrilandAgriland will be home to many ani-

mals over the weekend, and organiz-ers are focusing on babies this year.

There will be a foal, a baby llama, ducklings, a calf and, of course, those irresistible piglets. Visitors can watch the bunnies run, jump and play, or come and say hello to the miniature horses.

Those who still have energy after spending time with all the animals can have a try at being a farmer for a day. Here you will have a chance to dig for potatoes, pick apples from the orchard and collect eggs from the chicken coop.

Agriland will also feature live horse-shoeing and sheep shearing. As well, the BC Dairy Classroom will give daily milking demonstrations – visitors will get up close to see fi rst-hand how a dairy farmer milks his cows.

The public can also get a closer look at the impressive Strathcona Mounted Troop horses, which will be stabled in the Agriland area.

Agriland has grown this year. Nor-mally it is on the blacktop of the west end of the trade show building. This year it will take over the entire area between the trade show building and the Agrifair Arena, in addition to the area on the pavement!

Come early and listen to the rooster waking up, and stay late to watch all the animals go to bed.

A fi ve-year-old boy tries his hand at milking the full-size cow model. Agrifair’s directors work hard at maintaining the fair’s agricultural roots.

Free community pancake breakfast

The Psalm 23 Transition Society is preparing once again this year to serve the community a free pancake breakfast at Abbotsford Agrifair on Sunday morning.

The breakfast is designed to serve Agrifair staff, exhibitors and any members of the public who want to attend. Psalm 23 has been running this community event since 2006, and serves 2,000 to 4,000 plates each year.

“It’s grown beyond anyone’s expec-tations,” said Psalm 23 president and executive director Marvin Declare. “It’s been a wonderful outreach for us. It gives the students of our pro-gram a chance to meet and interact with the community and change people’s perceptions about them.”

“I truly appreciate the relationship we have with Agrifair as they have supported us to the point where we now have Sunday morning worship led by the Brad Davis Band and a morning message from Pastor Cory Dueck of Genesis Church.

“This year I will also be sharing an update to our ministry and the won-derful miracles that are happening.”

The free breakfast has received support from the community.

“We are delighted this year to have Whatcom Road and Sumas Save-On-Foods sponsor the bulk of all our

food needs and expect McDonald’s on Bourquin Crescent to support our supply needs,” said Declare.

He said everyone associated with Agrifair has allowed the group to carry the message of hope to those who are in need within our commu-nity.

Psalm 23 will be selling homemade strawberry and blueberry jams, concentrated juices and fruit cups at their community booth near the Food Court, and volunteers will once again be serving pies and refresh-ments at Pioneer Corner.

Declare invites people to stop by and say hello if they are interested in volunteering for the Pie Barn or for the Sunday morning pancake breakfast. Psalm 23 Transition Society is a charitable non-profi t ministry that offers a province-wide alcohol and drug treatment facility at 59 Mile House. Students then bridge back into the community through their supportive housing units. For more information, contact them at 604-870-5616, email [email protected] or visit their website at www.psalm23society.com.

Declare hopes the Sunday celebra-tion at Agrifair will eventually bring local churches together for a joint city-wide service.

Strathcona MountedTroop rides again

Lord Strathcona Mounted Troop is back at Agrifair this year.

For what might be the last year at Agrifair, the Lord Strathcona Mounted Troop will be perform-ing in the rodeo arena, better known as the ThunderBowl, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Monday the troop will be inside, as part of the Country Horse Clas-sic Show held in the Agrifair Are-na, for a ride that is considered a classic by horse enthusiasts. The troop requires permission to start each show. The salute must be given by an honoured guest prior to the performance commencing.

The 25 members of the Strath-cona Mounted Troop are soldiers of Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians). The members of the troop volunteer for one or two years to serve in much the same manner as Strathconas did in the 1920s.

Their daily schedule concen-trates on the care of their mounts and equipment, and in cavalry drills and training. In addition, they are responsible to remain ready for active military duty, and must therefore participate in trade-specifi c training.

Don’t miss your chance to see them perform, brought to you by Chances Abbotsford.

Crime in decline

FILE PHOTO Abbotsford News

The Abbotsford Police are being lauded by a local criminologist for their innovative policing strategies, and this week’s release of Statistics Canada numbers show that criminal offences are indeed on the decline in the city. Also this week, city council learned that residents of the onetime “Murder Capital of Canada” are now more concerned with municipal government issues than crime.

Latest national stats show city’s rates lower than neighbours’,and poll reveals fewer citizens list crime as a top concern A5

There will be a winner every dayCome to Agrifair and watch contestants compete in the

Amazing Race, brought to you by the Abbotsford News. One lucky participant will have a chance to win a share of

$2,000 in cash.On Saturday, Aug. 4, 10 hopeful participants (fi ve teams

of two) will vie for fi rst, second and third cash prizes. If you feel the Amazing Race is a little beyond your

league, you can always follow the cutout of Penny the Pig in a scavenger hunt to win $100 per day. But be careful, Penny has about 11 brothers and sisters, so you have to fi nd the right Penny. Scavenger Hunt questionnaires will be

available at the entry gates and the guest services booth. Drop off your completed entry at guest services. Don’t forget to look for the piglets. Hint: You will fi nd them in the food court.

If you think you’ve got texting down, enter the texting competition brought to you by Clearwest Solutions for a chance to win a brand new phone. You have to be “the fastest texter in the Fraser Valley.” Registration will be at the Clearwest booth on the fairgrounds and at guest services.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday participants will get a text to participate that day. There will be six contestants

daily and the fi nal two from each day will go on to Mon-day’s fi nals. Monday will have six fi nalists texting to win a phone (fi nalists for the Monday competition will receive fair passes).

You may not even have to enter contests to win at Agri-fair. Don’t be afraid if an Agrifair volunteer comes up to you and asks, “Do you mind answering a few questions?” This just might be your opportunity to win tickets to the Rockin’ River Music Festival.

There you go: A chance to win $1,000, a $100 prize, a new phone or tickets to a great music festival.

Multicultural eventadded to Agrifair

Agrifair will get a multicultural fl avour this year, with the addition of Abbyfest at Agrifair.

Musleh Hakki is the founder of Abbotsford’s annual Abbyfest event which celebrates the diversity in the community, and he is bringing the same approach to Agrifair on Saturday.

It will begin with a Parade of Na-tions at 10 a.m. This typically brings 60 different fl ags on parade at Ab-byfest, and Hakki said it emphasizes that “we have so many different nationalities among us.”

At 11 a.m. there will be main stage entertainment including the First Nations Jiggers, belly dancers, Scot-

tish Highland dancers and bhangra dancers.

At 1 p.m. there will be a demonstra-tion of the kabaddi, the South Asian sport that combines elements of wrestling and rugby. First there will be a demonstration game, followed by audience participation.

From 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. there will be a mock Indo-Canadian wedding, with singing, dancing and rituals.

“We are excited,” said Hakki. “It gives a new dimension to Agrifair.”

It will also be a preview of Abbyfest, which this year takes place on Sept. 15 at the Ag-Rec Building at Exhibi-tion Park.

Inverted fairgoers enjoy the West Coast Amusements midway at Agrifair.

Agrifair salutes past president Harry de Jong

Harry de Jong’s ded-ication to Abbotsford Agrifair over the years is refl ected in the success of the board dynamic, as well as the relationships he has built within the com-munity.

De Jong “retired” into the position of

past president last fall, after serving as an Agrifair director continuously since 1995. After terms as the board secretary and vice-president, de Jong served as president of Agrifair for more than 10 years. He is the longest serving and oldest current member on the board.

By the time de Jong turned his attention to Agrifair, he had already amassed a distin-guished record of service to the community and the province. His service began on the MSA Parks and Recreation Commission in 1963. That was followed by terms on Tourism Abbotsford and the MSA Hospital Board, 10 years as mayor of Matsqui and eight as Abbotsford MLA, including a term as Minister of Agriculture.

In his many years of dedicated service, he has proven to be an effective leader.

A humble, thoughtful and fair man, he leads with quiet grace and style. He allows everyone a chance to voice their opinion. With determination and perseverance, de Jong has unifi ed those diverse opinions and brought the Agrifair board together as a family, with each member working together

and striving to make the fair bigger and better.

Under his leadership, the “little” fair has grown into a fi ve-day community celebra-tion of family fun and wholesome enter-tainment that showcases the thriving local agricultural industry.

De Jong has always stressed that each director has an individual contribution to make, but that taking action and making decisions regarding Agrifair must be done as one single unit. He always reminds the board decisions need to be made in the best interest of the fair; that fi rst and fore-most, Agrifair is a fun family event for the community.

De Jong is well-respected by each and every Agrifair board member. They describe him as loyal and trustworthy, a great man and an even greater friend.

In 2006, he was appointed to the order of Abbotsford in recognition of a lifetime of service to the community.

In 2010, he was listed as one of the 100 Most Infl uential People in Abbotsford.

In 2011 he was selected as the commu-nity’s Favourite Volunteer in the Abbotsford News A-List. He was also instrumental in making Agrifair the A-List’s Favourite Com-munity Event.

De Jong is generally quiet, but his many sayings display both a sharp wit and a deep thoughtfulness.

For example: “The only difference be-tween a pigeon and a farmer today is that a pigeon can still make a deposit on a John Deere.”

DE JONG
