Food for Body and Soul
There seems to be much anxiety these days surrounding food, even in societies where food is plentiful and starvation is rare. There are food scares…salmonella, listeria…and the usual concerns about fat, cholesterol and sodium. Medical conditions such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia affect thousands of people. Food, essential for life and meant to be enjoyed, becomes instead a threat, something causing discomfort and even sickness. Where food is scarce, finding enough to eat becomes a great responsibility In the Scriptures, food is mentioned quite often. In the Garden of Eden, food symbolized wisdom and temptation. In the desert, it symbolized God’s care for His people. The Passover meal was a commemoration of rescue from slavery. In the New Testament, Jesus is frequently shown eating. Having a meal with Martha and Mary shows Jesus relaxing with His friends. Eating with Zacchaeus, Jesus shows His regard for people often overlooked. His dining with tax collectors and sinners is a statement of who the Son of Man came to save. In the miracles of the loaves and fish, food is a sign of blessing and abundance. Jesus brings together much of the symbolism associated with food. As in the desert of old, food represents God’s provisions for people. Food represents deliverance, and Jesus’ concern for those often overlooked by others. Food also points to those the Son of Man came to save. In the taking of the bread, the blessing, breaking and distributing, food points to the sacrifice of Christ, and His presence in the Eucharist. Let us remember then that when anxious about food, when hungry and when in any kind of need, we can think about the Lord and how He provides, and that we, in turn, are to provide the same for others in His name. Father David

brick by brickAn Important Summer Project at St. James the Apostle Parish
This past year we experienced some damage to our facilities as a result of the need of extensive masonry work, tuck pointing work, roof repairs and replacements. Water is getting inside the walls when the freeze/thaw season pops the brick mortar out of the joints.
Over the years, temporary repairs and patching has been completed but at this time we need to address the issues more directly. Specifically, we need to replace the deteriorated brick, flashing and roof on the old church, which is now St James Hall. The project will also include repairing the base of the four brick columns in front of the church and school. The estimated costs are around $80,000.
We will have a poster in the narthex with pictures of the damage and special envelopes you may use if you wish to contribute to this necessary project.
You may also utilize your Preserving our Father’s House envelope included in your monthly packet to help us build back, brick by brick.
For those who are more inclined to contribute online, please visit our website, stjamesge.org and click on the link, “Donate to St. James the Apostle Parish”. On that page is a link to online giving where you will find a new fund to which you can donate entitled, “Building Back, Brick by Brick”.
Although this kind of foundational work isn’t entirely aesthetically pleasing, it is crucial to keeping our facilities in good working order for all of the wonderful ministry God is doing through our parish.
We appreciate whatever amount you might be able to give to help us accomplish this important project this summer. Thank you!

[ STEWARDSHIP NOTE FOR TODAY ]
In today’s Gospel, Jesus had planned to slip away from the crowds for a moment of peace and quiet. When He saw the people gathered, however, He put His needs aside to meet the needs of others. Sometimes, as good stewards, we are called to the same.
Please remember St. James the Apostle Parish when you are on vacation. You may put your offering in the collection basket before you leave or when you return. We count on your generosity all year long. Thank you!
The offertory collection amount for the weekend of July 3/4 is $10,365

Low Gluten Hosts
For those with wheat allergies or gluten intolerance, the Diocese of Joliet has designated two approved sources for low gluten hosts: The Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in Clyde, Missouri and Parish Crossroads, LLC in Zionsville, Indiana. Because religious goods retail stores sell wafers that are suitable for many different denominations, but may not meet the requirements of the Roman Catholic Church, we ask that our parishioners use hosts we have supplied for them. We order our low gluten hosts from the Benedictine Sisters in Clyde. When a parishioner needing a low gluten host arrives for Mass, they take their host from their pyx and place it in a glass dish kept on the credence table. They then place the dish on the altar. This keeps their host segregated to avoid contamination with wheat products, and allows them to receive the Precious Body at Mass without concern for their health. During the Sign of Peace, our low gluten individuals line up behind the ministers who are serving at the Mass and follow the ministers forward to the bottom of the steps, where they will wait for the priest to bring them the Precious Body. We are pleased to provide a pyx and the host packets, which must be kept in the freezer until brought to church, for any parishioner needing low gluten because of an allergy or illness. If you need low gluten hosts, you may contact the parish office and make the arrangements.
This Weekend We Acknowledge and Bless All Those who Celebrated a Sacrament at St. James the Apostle Parish After the Lockdown through June 2021
This weekend on our Calendar of Blessings we celebrate all those who celebrated a Sacrament at St. James for the first time after the lockdown through to June of 2021. Now that we may distribute bulletins once again, we are reprinting their names and the dates of their celebrations on the pages that follow. Although these parishioners had to adjust to all of the directives in place for safety, they made the most of strange times and encountered Jesus in the midst of the Sacraments. May God bless each and everyone of them!

On Wednesday, 7/7 the St. James the Apostle Knights of Columbus, Council #9806 met in a face-to-face meeting for the first time in over 15 months. The accompanying picture shows District Deputy Dick Clish handing Grand Knight Mike Progar the Illinois in Action Bronze Award. This award recognizes the efforts of Council #9806 in the areas of service to St. James Parish and the community in general over the past fiscal year. As St. James Parish is transitioning to a more open attitude of worship and service, the Knights are busy planning and working on a number of events to be held in the near future. The first of these is a resumption of the popular Parish Golf Outing. This year, the Knights will co-sponsor this event with St. James School with proceeds, as in the past, going to the school and religious education scholarship fund. This golf outing will take place on Friday, August 20 at The Village Links of Glen Ellyn with golf starting at 1:00 pm and dinner at 6:00 pm. ALL parishioners and friends are invited for either a day of playing golf, an evening dinner, or both. There will be contests during the golf outing and opportunities for winning a number of prizes at the dinner. Please check out future weekend bulletins for more details on this event. The Golf Outing is just another way that the Knights are helping to support the St. James the Apostle community. If you are a male over 18 years of age and think you might like to join us, please contact any Knight to get information about how you might join us.

Christian Service Ministries
The Young at Heart ministry for our senior parishioners has been active for over 50 years at St. James. Luncheons with entertainment are usually held once a month from September through May. We are in need of new leadership for this ministry and assistants to help at the luncheons. It only takes a commitment of 5-6 hours per month to put smiles on the faces of our seniors. To volunteer or seek more information please contact Gail Johnson at 630 690-2278 or [email protected]. You'll be glad you did! God bless.
