The

Today’s Birthday: Kimbra, 1990

You say you don’t know Kimbra Lee Johnson? Think again.

The Australian-born singer, the daughter of a physician, began writing songs when she was 10 and started playing guitar at age 12.

She had several hits in Australia, and when she was 17 she won the “Breakthrough Artist Of The Year” awarded by a local television station.

Her song “Cameo Lover” won a songwriter’s competition in 2011, besting a song written by the Flemish-Australian star Gotye.

She eventually signed with Warner Brothers, and a studio producer suggested Kimbra to Gotye, who wanted a female to share the lead vocals on a song he was readying for release.

The song went ballistic worldwide, and the pair performed it live on “Saturday Night Live” and at the 2013 Grammy’s show, which earned the record of the year statue later in the show.

Kimbra is Gotye’s foil on, of course, “Somebody That I Used To Know,” one of the hottest records of the decade.

ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) Really crazy energy out there right now. Try not to get too sucked into it. Know that you may be more volatile than usual and at the same time you may have your feelings hurt a little more easily. Difficult combination, so try to stay calm.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) There is probably a more creative option to resolve an ongoing situation; you just may not be able to see it right now. Try to think outside the box, the more creatively the better.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Ever notice that every once in a while you just completely space out and forget about your body? You know that it needs to eat and rest and stuff like that, remember? Check in with your body and honor its needs.

CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Those pesky mood swings are hanging around right now. Fight off those darker clouds and know that your

feelings will change if you just don’t get too invested in them.

LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) Things may look a little terrifying, yet some of this big giant fear may be all in your head and disproportionate to the situation at hand. Calm down and see what there really is to be afraid of and what you are making up.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Clarity reigns this week. Wait for it and know it is coming. Take some deep breaths and know that even when there is big fog energy, every once in a while the clarity will break through.

LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Pay special attention to your intuition and don’t be afraid of your power. This is a powerful time; however a great deal of your power will come from the non-tangible side of things. Trust your gut.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Think big picture. Right now there are so many little details flying around and they may be very distracting and at times compelling, however by pulling back and seeing the bigger picture you get all the information you need on what to do with all those details. Seek the overview.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) The new and the different is where you want to go even though you may have an almost knee jerk response that change is bad. Embrace the change and re-arrange the furniture as an affirmation of this.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) It is about putting what you believe to the test by bringing it out into the world and trying it out. Walk your talk. If you say you believe something, then take action in that direction.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Boundaries will be key this week. Take stock of what you can do and what you can’t do and what you

want to do and what you don’t want to do. This will be a great start for deciding your boundaries.

PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Love is in the air. Whether it be a relationship with a human or an animal or your home, or something in nature, embrace the love you are feeling and share it with those around you. Love does need to be given and received in equal measure, insist that this be so.

NOTE: If you were born at the end or beginning of a sign, read the sign before or after your birthday.

Coming Soon

The Place Beyond The Pines (R) The first “important” film of the year lives up to its advance notices, thanks to the powerful performances of Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper. Gosling, who plays a biker who consciously decides to commit a crime to support his child, gives an Oscar-worthy performance. Cooper plays the cop looking to bring him to justice with equal aplomb. Director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine) has fashioned a deeply emotional, tension filled drama that resonates on several levels.

New In TheatersThe Croods (PG-13) Chris Sanders

(How To Train Your Dragon) delivers another animated gem, this one

about a prehistoric family searching for a new cave. Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Cloris Leachman and Emma Stone are some of the voices. This is one of those cartoons meant for the whole family to enjoy together.

New On DVD

The Perks of Being a Wallflower Emma Watson, in her first post-Harry Potter role, is enchanting as a high school senior in a little clique of artsy misfits. Logan Lerman co-stars as a freshman the seniors take under their wings. But it’s Ezra Miller who ends up stealing the show as their cynical friend. One of the better movies of the year, it somehow flew under the radar.

Kathleen King of Tate's Bake Shop in Southampton shares a recipe for Easter. Hot Cross Buns are as emblematic of Easter as bunnies and baskets. Using a quick-bread batter instead of the traditional sweet, yeasted bread dough, Kathleen’s hot cross muffins put her own unique spin on a holiday classic.

While walking on the beach with my friend Judith Anne, I was discussing my recipe of the month for our website and that I hadn’t decided on one that would suit the Easter holidays. She said, “Hot cross buns!” and before we knew it, the recipe was developed, a quick and easy muffin with golden raisins and cranberries. When I got home, I put together these muffins, which are similar in flavor to the traditional yeast

Hot Cross Muffinsbun, but less time consuming to make. The muffins are moist and keep well.

Muffins (Makes 12 muffins)Softened butter for the muffin cups2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour

1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 tablespoon baking powder Grated zest of 1/2 orange

Grated zest of 1 lemon 1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice

1 cup mixed dried currants, dried cranberries, and golden raisins, in

any combination1 cup milk

8 tablespoons (1 stick) salted butter, melted1 large egg

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Icing 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar,

sifted 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Position an oven rack in the center of the oven and preheat the oven to 400 F. Butter twelve 3-by-1½-inch muffin cups.

To make the muffins: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, orange and lemon zests, salt, cinnamon, and allspice. Add the dried fruit and mix with your fingers, breaking apart any fruit that is stuck together.

In a small bowl, whisk together the milk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla. Pour into the dry ingredients and stir just until combined. Do not overmix. Using a ½- cup food portion scoop or a spoon, transfer the batter into the prepared muffin cups.

Bake until a wooden toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean. (These muffins will be flat on top, without the traditional hump.) Let the muffins cool in the pan on a wire cooling rack for 10 minutes. Remove from the pan and let cool completely on the rack.
