Black History Month exhibitThe Suffolk County Historical

Society presents a Black History Month Exhibit, running today through March 12. "Envisioning, Developing, and Preserving Gordon Heights," the show features photographs, newspaper accounts, and the testimonies of original homesteaders documenting the founding and rise of the Gordon Heights community in central Suffolk County. Positioning the emergence of Gordon

Heights within the interrelated histories of the Great Migration and black suburbanization, this exhibit examines the roots of housing segregation on Long Island and recounts the efforts of Gordon Heights residents to build their community and civic institutions, including NY state’s first African American fire department.

presents Christian Little, “Exhibitionists.” Little’s recent body of work examines a voyeur culture preoccupied with sex, drama and the lives of others. His acrylic paintings on wood panel are intended, not to offer a representation of reality, but rather, to suggest simulations of imagined actualities. The paintings are simultaneously voyeuristic and participatory, erotic and sterile, stiff and fluid, analytic and absurd.

The exhibition will be on view through February 20.

Out Of your MindThe East End Arts Gallery in

Riverhead presents its annual non-juried, all media Members’ Show, this year themed "Out of your Mind." East End Arts members have been invited to submit one work of art for

guaranteed inclusion in this show. The Annual Members’ Show provides the opportunity for all member artists to show their work to the public. The show will run through March 4.

the seerThe Halsey McKay Gallery in

East Hampton presents David B. Smith’s exhibit “The Seer.” The show runs through March 9. Working in opposition to Google’s Deep Dream algorithm, which teaches computers to interpret images, David B. Smith programmatically deconstructs images, transforming them into soft objects that refuse to be deciphered by human or machine.

Winter Watercolor scenesThe Suffolk County Historical Society

in Riverhead presents the exhibition “Winter Watercolor Scenes,” by Jeanne Rogers. The exhibit will run through February.

Winter Watercolor Scenes will feature Rogers’ winter landscape works. The paintings, inspired by places the artist has visited, convey beautifully vibrant winter landscapes of Long Island and upstate New York. Both abstract and more realistic interpretations of the winter scenes show the wide range of Rogers’ artistic sensibilities.

Love & PassionBroadway(& Sometimes Off)

Reporting From

By Isa Goldberg

Broadway loves a farce and Michael Frayn’s Noises Off,(American Airlines Theatre) makes it to the top of the list. Albeit no more sophisticated than a vaudeville act and with some marked resemblances to one, Frayn’s comedy run amok centers on a troupe of British actors performing in a touring road show of Nothing On.

Indeed, several of the actors drop their drawers, while others lose their sardines – a major prop piece that highlights the amateur and highly narcissistic onstage shenanigans. As the maid remarks, “Getting the sardines on and getting the sardines off. That’s theater.” In that role, Andrea Martin cuts her classic comedic pose, this time as a ditzy old diva with limited short-term memory, but ample long-term assets.

As her backstage love interest, actor David Furr portrays the dashing realtor in Nothing On, who in turn, fixes his attention on Megan Hilty, his sexy playmate. In her semi-naked state, Hilty looks as demure as a Barbie, even though her gait, curiously, turns as leaden as a truck driver’s.

When Jeremy Shamos as the owner

of the country estate where Nothing On takes place and Kate Jennings Grant as his wife, arrive, the on stage romp ignites with the backstage conflicts.

Tracee Chimo as the homely stage manager, secretly in service to the director’s (Campbell Scott’s) personal sexual needs, and Rob McClure as the stagehand who understudies the burglar and the landowner, help run the backstage drama into the onstage farce. With daredevil pratfalls, swinging doors, broken doorknobs, missed entrances, confused identities, and props that take on a life of their own -- appearing and disappearing at whim -- the show is, as billed, totally slapstick.

Ironically, director Jeremy Herrin (Wolf Hall on Broadway) leads this terrific ensemble of Broadway stalwarts in creating a bumbling troupe of actors.

ues stud with W/DPlaywright/actor Nandita Shenoy’s

Washer/Dryer, produced by MaYi Theater at the Beckett on Theatre Row, brings sentimental charm to a contemporary romantic comedy.

And in our proud city, love and real

estate come together. Need I say more, except to clarify the premise: a studio with a washer/dryer, is a coveted piece of real estate.

As the dryer goes round and round, so does the plot. Michael (Johnny Wu) moves into Sonya’s (Nandita Shenoy’s) apartment, after marrying her on the fly in Las Vegas, only to discover that he can’t live there, according to the building’s co-op rules and its obnoxiously nosy board president (Annie McNamara).

Meanwhile, his new wife refuses to give it up – the investment of her life means far more than the handsome guy she nabbed in a shotgun wedding. To make matters worse, Michael’s overly persistent mom (Jade Wu) can’t bear that he’s married to another woman.

That it all works out for a happy ending pivots around Laura’s best friend and neighbor, Sam. Here, the towering Jamyl Dobson, makes for an awkward queen who surprises us with the lithe moves of a mole, sneaking around in a space no larger than a closet.

now in texas In Utility, the Amoralists current

production at the Rattlestick Theater (224 Waverly Place) unemployment

and poverty determine the characters’ small town lives. Here, Amber (Vanesse Vache) is a relentless hard working wife who shoulders everything, while Chris, her affectionate, if ineffectual and philandering husband (James Kautz), strives to mitigate the negativity that permeates every moment.

Playwright Emily Schwend renders the hopeless, repetitive world of an unhappily married couple and their three young children with little apparent subtlety. Their problems are all out-front, and the perpetuation of downward spiraling poverty takes over like a roller coaster in an otherwise glum environment. It’s so banal that it verges on comic.

Even in her chain-smoking silences, however, Vache manages to hold our attention. That Amber’s equally luckless mom, played by Melissa Hurst, along with Alex Grubbs as Michael’s sensitive brother Jim, are sympathetic, likable characters brings depth to the onstage malaise.

In keeping with director Jay Stull’s formidable realism, Kate Noll’s set, a kitchen with avocado colored walls, brings us right into their home. In the end, it’s a place where a little light brings the hope of some redemption.

Elizabeth Banks, 1974She kind of crept up on us, but no one is hotter than Elizabeth

Banks right now. She’s wonderfully over the top as Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games franchise. She not only starred in Pitch Perfect, she was a producer. And in Pitch Perfect 2 she stars, produced, and directed as well.

Elizabeth Mitchell grew up in Massachusetts and attended Penn. She graduated magna cum laude in 1996 with a major in communications and a minor in theater. She changed her name to Banks when she got her first acting part to avoid confusion with an actress with the same name.

It didn’t take long for Banks to make a splash: she was featured in all three Spiderman movies and landed a role in The 40 Year-Old Virgin in 2005.

She also had recurring roles on “30 Rock” as the girlfriend and later wife of Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin). She played the wife of Brian Wilson in the 2015 film Love And Mercy.

She is married to her college boyfriend Max Handelman and the couple has two kids.

Banks didn’t always dream of becoming an actress: she wanted to be a baseball player until she broke her leg playing Little league.

cast of Hollywood’s finest gets together with one of the most respected producer-director teams in the biz and . . . makes a bomb. Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum et al learn a valuable lesson: beware of Coen Brothers’ movies slated for a February release, especially if they are supposed to be comedies. They usually aren’t funny.

coming soon Zoolander No. 2 (NR) They ‘re back.

This time Ben Stiller is behind the lens as director as well as in front of the camera with co-star Owen Wilson as over-the-top models. In this episode the two rivals have become partners. Will Ferrell, Kristin Wiig and Penelope Cruz are along to insure the laughs keep coming.

idealistic FBI agent working on busting a drug cartel in Mexico. She eventually learns there is much more going on – the assassination of a drug lord. Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin co-star and actor turned screenwriter Taylor Sheridan turns in a taut script. Don’t miss it.

now playingKrisha (R) Firs t t ime director

Trey Edwards Shults has crafted a memorable film about a drug addict returning after a 10-year absence and the ensuing tension among family members. Krisha Fairchild stars – she is actually the filmmaker’s aunt, and the cast is a family affair indeed. Shults’s own mother, Robyn Fairchild, co-stars as Krisha’s exasperated sister. Even Shults’s 90-year-old grandmother has a pivotal role as the clan’s grandmother. The film isn’t a true story, but viewers quickly get the impression it’s not too far removed from real life. Regardless, the low budget, off-kilter effort hits hard and was the darling of the SXSW Film Festival.

The Fifth Wave (PG-13) No, it’s not a surfing movie. A teenage girl tries to withstand waves of aliens invading earth while she texts her best gay bud, complains about her little brother, and says OMG a lot. Chloë Grace Moretz does the honors. Liev Schreiber somehow got roped into co-starring. Your typical post apocalyptic fantasy. Add a star if you are 16.

Creed (PG-13) Long before Rocky became a caricature of himself Sylvester Stallone’s original screenplay was good enough for Oscar consideration. Oddly, though Creed is named after a character (Apollo Creed) from one of the Rocky movies, and because Stallone co-stars, people tend to think of this film as Rocky VII. Instead, Ryan Coogler, the director and co-writer, has created another vehicle for Michael B. Jordan, the brilliant star of their first endeavor, Fruitvale Station.

Jordan, in the upper echelon of the new breed of Hollywood talents, delivers an amazing performance, and Stallone, for the first time in years, shows his acting chops as well.

F a n s o f R o c k y w o n ’ t b e disappointed, although this is the first one that Stallone hasn’t had a hand in writing. This film packs a deeper emotional wallop thanks to Jordan.

ingredients (serves 4)2 large baking potatoes

1 medium sized Yukon gold potato1 egg yolk

2 1/2 c pastry or cake flourA bench scraper or large metal

spatulaSalt and pepper

3 oz butter1/2 c chicken stock (reduced to about

3 tbsp)1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

MethodBegin by baking all three potatoes

Potato Gnocchi With Butter And Parmesan

at 350 for 70 minutes or until they are soft and fully cooked. While they are baking, set up a large pot of boiling salted water. You will need the water to be hot when you finish the gnocchi.

While the potatoes bake, gather and prepare your other ingredients. When the potatoes are almost fully cooked make your butter sauce by reducing the chicken stock in a small sauce pot.

Once it is reduced, turn the heat to low and stir in cold cubes of butter until you have a nice sauce. Add salt

and pepper. When the potatoes come out of the

oven let them rest only until you are able to handle them in about 10 minutes. While they rest, dust a large work space with some of the flour.

Cut the potatoes open, scoop out the flesh with a spoon, and mill them through a potato ricer or food mill right on to the floured work space.

Drizzle the egg yolk over top of the warm potato and follow with a heavy handful of the flour. Begin to cut or gently chop the ingredients together, being sure not to work too fast or aggressively. You do not want to over worm the ingredients.

When the moisture of the potatoes absorbs the flour, dust on a lighter sprinkle and fold the forming dough ball in on top of itself from all four side, pressing it all together. Repeat this process until you have a dough that is workable but not too dense (you may or may not need all the flour).

Form the dough ball into a log shape. With the bench scraper, cut off 1/3 of the dough and roll it out by spreading your fingers apart and

gently rolling out a tube about as thick as a thumb.

Cut them into one inch sections and immediately dunk into the boiling salted water. When they float cook them for another minute. Scoop them out with a slotted spoon and dunk them right into the warm butter sauce. Cook in the warm butter sauce over medium low heat for three minutes. Finish with the grated Parmesan cheese and fresh cracked black pepper.
