Artist Image Analysis

This particular shot of the famous rapper “50 Cent” has informal symmetry because of his hands being crossed at uneven levels. This stance and the way he stares at the camera could be associated with rap culture and the artist wanting to appear intimidating and frightening.

The lighting on one side of his body and face is very high key, whereas the other side is quite low key, this is a very conventional way of presenting artists in pictures.

Mostly the colours used in this picture are quite neutral other than his snapback which in contrast stands out quite a bit, perhaps trying to draw attention to it, showing his style.

The first thing I noticed about this image is the fact it is in greyscale, giving the picture a very classic look. The lighting is very high key and makes the artist look appealing by showing him in a good light.

The rule of thirds can be applied to this image because the artist’s face is in the top-left corner of the picture and falls on two intersecting lines which makes it the first thing your eyes are drawn to, this works quite effectively.

The clothes he is wearing are quite casual and makes him appear laid back, and the snapback he is wearing links him with the genre of “trap”.

This group image of popular indie rock band “Bloc Party” is taken in quite high key lighting to emphasise their features and so they are instantly recognisable from a glance.

They are all wearing jeans and either t-shirts or jumpers which is very casual clothing and represents the “indie” music scene well. They are also all wearing similar colours, making them appear better as a collective.

The image is also has informal symetry because of the way they are stood but because they are all not the same height and have slightly different designs on their clothes it is only informal. You are drawn to the artists’ faces in this image because their heads allign with a horizontal line and also the far left and right figures have their heads across two intersecting lines.

The rule of thirds is utilised well in this picture as you can see from the position of Jimi Hendrix’s head. He is wearing quite bright, colourful, clothes which represents what era this picture was taken in. The lighting is quite low-key with the exception being his face with one side of it lit. There is no symmetry in this image because his guitar is filling one half and he is filling the other.

The rule of thirds could have been used much more effectively in this picture as the intersecting lines don’t really cross over many of the band member’s faces. The

figure on the far left could maybe have moved a little more left and then his head would have been on a pair of intersecting lines.

The image has been grayscaled to give it a ‘classic’ look maybe suggesting that the band has been around a long time, making a point that they are veterans in the music industry. Also the clothing they are wearing represents the genre of ‘metal’ music very well because ethey are all in black with studded belts and three members have very long hair. The tattoos further suggest what genre of music is being represented.
